Churburg Castle
Churburg (Italian: Castel Coira) is a medieval castle that towers over the municipality
of Sluderno (Schluderns), near the Resia (Reschen) Pass. The sprawling complex is
situated atop a hill, which offers little security by nature, in the Venosta (Vinschgau)
Valley. The core of the complex comprised only a very strong castle keep, the great
hall, and a circular wall. Several kennels, gates, towers, a Romanesque chapel and a
large garden are situated around the core of the castle. The castle, which has never
been destroyed, houses a wealth of richly furnished spaces, panelled and painted
rooms with tiled stoves, and a library. In the sixteenth century, the portico around the
courtyard loggia was richly decorated with precious wall paintings in bright colours.
The castle’s armoury, the largest private collection in the world, contains what would
almost completely equip an entire garrison: a total of more than 50 perfectly
preserved suits of armour, swords and other striking and stabbing weapons. The
armoury, however, lacks firearms: they were requisitioned during the period of the
Napoleonic wars. The most striking piece is a 2.1-metre-wide suit of armour that dates
back to around 1450. Missaglia, the Milanese armourer, made the 40-kilogramme suit
of armour. The armour belonged to Ulrich von Matsch.
