SS. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church
Celebrating 93 Years
1923 - 2016
Drawing from the treasures of the Gospel and Roman Catholic Church teaching,
we commit ourselves to be living examples of a community rich in faith,
seeking the Kingdom of God.
The Baptism of the Lord
January 10, 2016
I WAS THINKING…
Today is the Solemnity of the Baptism of the Lord. As the
Luke’s Gospel says today: “The people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts whether John might be
the Christ. John answered them all, saying, ‘I am baptizing you
with water, but one mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to
loosen the thongs of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy
Spirit and fire.’ After all the people had been baptized and Jesus
also had been baptized and was praying, heaven was opened and
the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove.
And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my beloved Son; with
you I am well pleased’ (Lk 3:15-16, 21-22)”. The Gospels of
Matthew and Mark talk of Jesus’ Baptism also.
The Solemnity of the Baptism of the Lord brings to an end
the Season of Christmas. The Church recalls Our Lord's second
manifestation or epiphany which occurred on the occasion of His
baptism in the Jordan. Jesus descended into the River of Jordan to
sanctify its waters. In the Eastern Church this feast is called Theophany because at the Baptism of Christ in the River Jordan God
appeared in three Persons. The baptism of John was a preparatory for the Baptism of Christ. It moved men to repentance and induced them to confess their sins. Christ did not need the baptism
from John. Although He appeared in the “substance of our flesh”
and was recognized “outwardly like unto ourselves,” He was absolutely sinless and faultless. He conferred upon the water the power of the true Baptism which would remove all the sins of the
world: “Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him who takes away the
sin of the world.”
Many of the incidents which accompanied Christ's Baptism are symbolical of what happened at our baptism. At Christ's
Baptism the Holy Spirit descended upon Him; at our Baptism the
Trinity took its abode in our soul. At His Baptism Christ was proclaimed the “Beloved Son” of the Father; at our Baptism we become the adopted sons of God. At Christ's Baptism the heavens
were opened; at our Baptism heaven was opened to us. At His
baptism Jesus prayed; after our Baptism we must pray to avoid
actual sin. (Excerpted from Msgr. Rudolph G. Bandas)
Today we also celebrate the 19th Anniversary of our Eucharistic Adoration Chapel. When our church was built, today’s Adoration Chapel was the Baptistery. More details about the Chapel and its stained glass windows will be in the next
week’s article. The Solemnity of the Baptism of the Lord is celebrated on Sunday after the Epiphany of the Lord.
May the Lord Jesus Christ and His Mom bless and protect you always!

BÓG ZACZYNA OD NICZEGO
Zanim Jezus pojawił się jako Mesjasz, wpierw
wystąpił Jan Chrzciciel. To ma znaczenie również dla nas,
gdyż zagłębienie się w chrześcijaństwo musi być
poprzedzone tym wstępem pokutnym, którym posługiwał
Jan.
Pierwsze błogosławieństwo to błogosławieństwo
ubóstwa duchowego. Ubodzy w duchu mogą być dopiero
szczęśliwi, podobnie jak jedynie puste naczynie wypełnia
się szlachetnym winem. Temu pierwszemu krokowi ku
Bogu odpowiada w mistyce droga oczyszczenia: „via
purgativa”, która wszak jest kontynuacją chrztu. „Via
Nierzadko kosztuje nas to utratę
To pierwszy krok ku rozwojowi duchowemu
Dlaczego? Byśmy mogli być
adresatami tych słów, które Ojciec wypowiedział o Nim.
Tyle że trzeba zejść do poziomu prawdy o sobie. Jezus
zejdzie jeszcze niżej, gdy Go podwyższą na krzyżu, a On
będzie przeżywał opuszczenie przez Ojca. Głos, który
rozległ się nad Jordanem wprost z niebios, zamilknie w
czasie ukrzyżowania, by Ten, który został ukrzyżowany,
zniżył się do poziomu jeszcze niższego niż Jordan, do
poziomu ludzkiej rozpaczy i osamotnienia. A wszystko to
po to, by nawet najbardziej opuszczony człowiek mógł w
Page 2
tej chwili Chrystus. Opuszczenie Jezusa wypełniło jego
obecnością każdą ludzką pustkę, nawet najbardziej
depresyjną i beznadziejną.

CHRISTMAS BASKETS
Michael Thomas
On behalf of the parish staff and the people we
serve I would like to thank all of the parishioners who have
been so generous with their gifts for Holiday Baskets. I
would especially thank Ron Grden and family for their continuing support in donating spiral hams. I would also like to
thank the parishioners of Our Lady of Grace and their St.
Vincent Society conference for their amazing donations of
truck loads of canned goods and holiday food items. I
would also like to thank our very hard working volunteers
David Odom, Marienne Frenette, Carl and Rose Kalita, and
Nancy Nemecek.
Due to all the support we have received we were
able to hand out 70 hams and turkeys with bag of groceries
and holiday food items! This is the most we have ever done
and it would not be possible without all the help we have
received.
Also because of all who have donated funds for
Christian Service we were able to provide 30 gift cards to
toy r us, for children in need this holiday.
Great holiday cheer abounded as we handed the
food to the grateful recipients. Again our heartfelt thanks
to all who made it possible to help families in need have a
very merry Christmas!

SS. Peter and Paul News
The Baptism of the Lord
January 10, 2016
Do you want to be on fire for God? John the
Baptist said that the Messiah would "baptize with the Holy
Spirit and with fire." Fire in biblical times was associated
with God and with his action in the world and in the lives of
his people. God sometimes manifested his presence by use
of fire, such as the burning bush which was not consumed
when God spoke to Moses (Exodus 3:2). The image of fire
was also used to symbolize God's glory (Ezekiel 1:4, 13), his
protective presence (2 Kings 6:17), his holiness
(Deuteronomy 4:24), righteous judgment (Zechariah 13:9),
and his wrath against sin (Isaiah 66:15-16). It is also used of
the Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:11 and Acts 2:3). God's fire both
purifies and cleanses, and it inspires a reverent fear of God
and of his word in us.
Jesus will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire
Jesus came to give us the fire of his Spirit that we
may radiate the joy and truth of the Gospel to a world in
desperate need of God's light and truth. His word has
power to change and transform our lives that we may be
lights pointing others to Christ. Like John the Baptist, we
too are called to give testimony to the light and truth of
Jesus Christ. Do you want the Lord's power, grace, and love
to burn brightly in your life? Ask him to fill you with his
Holy Spirit.
John preached a baptism of repentance for the
forgiveness of sins (Luke 3:3). Why did Jesus, the Sinless
One, submit himself to John's baptism? In this humble
submission we see a foreshadowing of the "baptism" of his
bloody death upon the cross. Jesus' baptism is the
acceptance and the beginning of his mission as God’s
suffering Servant. He allowed himself to be numbered
among sinners. Jesus submitted himself entirely to his
Father's will. Out of love he consented to this baptism of
death for the remission of our sins. Do you know the joy of
trust and submission to God?
Jesus' baptism - beginning of a new creation
The Father proclaimed his entire delight in his Son
and spoke audibly for all to hear. The Holy Spirit, too, was
present as he anointed Jesus for his ministry which began
that day as he rose from the waters of the Jordan river.
Jesus will be the source of the Spirit for all who come to
believe in him. At his baptism the heavens were opened
and the waters were sanctified by the descent of Jesus and
the Holy Spirit, signifying the beginning of a new creation.
Heaven will open for those who bow before the Lord
How can we enter into the mystery of Jesus'
humble self-abasement and baptism? Gregory of Nazianzus
(329-389 AD), an early church father tells us: "Let us be
buried with Christ by Baptism to rise with him; let us go
down with him to be raised with him; and let us rise with
Page 3
him to be glorified with him." Do you want to see your life
transformed? And do you want to become a more effective
instrument of the Gospel? Examine Jesus' humility and ask
the Holy Spirit to forge this same attitude in your heart. As
you do, heaven will open for you as well.
The Lord Jesus is ever ready to renew and
refashion us through his Spirit and to anoint us for mission
as his ambassadors. We are called to be "light" and |salt"
to those around us. The Lord wants his love and truth to
shine through us that others may see the goodness and
truth of God's message of salvation. Ask the Lord Jesus to
fill you with his Holy Spirit that you may radiate the joy of
the Gospel to those around you.
"Lord Jesus, fill me with your Holy Spirit and
inflame my heart with the joy of the Gospel. May I find joy
in seeking to please you just as you found joy in seeking to
please your Father." (Copyright 2016, Don Schwager)

Holy Hour
On Sunday, January 10, 2016, the SS. Peter and
Paul Parish Eucharistic Adoration Chapel will celebrate its
19th Anniversary with a Holy Hour at 3:00 p.m. Reconciliation will be available at 2:15 p.m.
The Holy Hour will be in Honor of Jesus in the Most
Blessed Sacrament, where Jesus is truly present Body and
Blood, Soul and Divinity, with all His love waiting for us to
return our love, and to bring to Him all our and the world’s
trials and tribulations.
As the year 2015 ends and the new year 2016 begins, we can take an account of our spirituality and make a
few changes in our lives.
The Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Chapel is
open Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 2:45
p.m. All are invited and welcome!
We should be able to say with St. Ignatius: to withdraw from creature and repose with Jesus in the Tabernacle is my delight. There I can hide myself and seek rest.
There I can find life which I cannot describe, a joy which I
cannot comprehend, a peace such as this is found only under the hospitable roof of our best Friend.
“Jesus in the Tabernacle protects me against the
evil spirits, the world, my own wicked passions, and evil
inclinations. He is my support in weakness, and comfort in
suffering, my weapon in combat, my refreshment in heat,
food for my hungry soul, my stimulus when I am exhausted
- He is my heaven on earth. Jesus in the Tabernacle is my
riches in poverty, my defense in calming, my crown in misfortune. Jesus in the Tabernacle is my God and my all”.

Eucharistic Adoration
Eucharistic Adoration provides us with a chance to
be with our Savior one on one. Through this practice of
Eucharistic Adoration, we are invited to spend time alone
with God in His real, physical form and to bring to Jesus all
our cares, concerns, prayers, hopes and thoughts. We set
aside a special time, a respite from our hectic modern lives,
to create a personal space in which to meet our God.
At our Parish we are blessed to have a beautiful
Eucharistic Adoration Chapel that is available to all who are
interested!
Holy Hour
Holy hours are the Roman Catholic devotional
tradition of spending an hour in Eucharistic Adoration in
the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. We will celebrate a
Holy Hour on Sunday, January 10, 2016 at 3:00 p.m.
Celebrating the 19th Anniversary of the Eucharistic
Adoration Chapel. Join us for a beautiful afternoon of
