Chef Wilson, thank you for
the wonderful BBQ cooking class...
your presentation was excellent,
informative, and very much
appreciated. We had a wonderful
time. It is a testimony to the
club that 6 different couples or
individuals, not one knowing any
of the others before the event, had
an evening that resembled old
friends getting together at one of
our homes. Thanks for giving us
the base to have so much fun.
Overall, you and your staff
have consistently exceeded our
expectations, causing our joining
the Club to be one of our best
Madison decisions yet. Thank you
for the many wonderful meals we
have experienced.
- Dean Richards

HISTORY CLUB DINNER
COLLECTING THE HISTORY OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16 AT 6 PM
How did the Wisconsin Historical Society acquire one of the nation’s richest collections on the Civil
Rights Movement in the United States during the 1960s? In a presentation entitled “Bold (Not to Say
Crazy): Building a Civil Rights Archive during the 1960s “, our guest speaker, Michael Edmonds, will
recount the fascinating story of how the Wisconsin Historical Society successfully employed a grassroots
effort in the 1960s to collect thousands of records, documents and artifacts relating to the Civil Rights
Movement then underway in the United States. The Society deployed graduate history students to travel
throughout the South, often times at great personal risk, to gather materials from organizations and
individuals at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement. Their resourceful and, at times, courageous
efforts to collect “history in the making” enabled the Society to amass one of best collections in the
United States on the Civil Rights movement.
A frequent speaker and prolific author, Mr. Edmonds recently edited Risking Everything: A Freedom
Summer Reader, which documents the 1964 Freedom Summer project, when SNCC and CORE workers
and volunteers went to Mississippi to challenge segregation. Mr. Edmonds designed a powerful, userfriendly curriculum to help teach middle and high school students the history of the Civil Rights
Movement in Milwaukee and the South.
Mr. Edmonds serves as the Deputy Administrator of Library-Archives at the Wisconsin Historical
Society and as the curator of its online collection of more than 25,000 pages documenting Freedom
Summer. Volunteers participating in Freedom Summer were met by extraordinary violence, much of
which was covered on national television and focused the country’s attention on civil rights issues. Public
outrage helped spur the U.S. Congress to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of
1965.
This event is open to all Madison Club members and guests. Cost is $45++ per person for dinner,
including a glass of wine. Please call the Madison Club to make your reservation: 608-255-4861.
