ONE FARM at a TIME
Why Preserve Farmland?
A few carefully chosen words can
provide a big impact. For example, “no
farms, no food” is a thought provoking
phrase. Those words alone could provide
a sufficient reason to preserve Lancaster
County farmland by supporting Lancaster
Farmland Trust. However, there is much
more that should be said.
Lancaster County’s approximately
5,000 farms provide food for over 26 million
people each year. The economic benefits
to our area from these family owned farming operations are
enormous. In fact, every $1 of products leaving Lancaster County
farms boosts our economy by about $6, a value of $6 billion a
year! Dairy, poultry, swine, beef, crop, and vegetable production
all contribute to the area’s economic strength. Many residents
in Lancaster County depend upon the agricultural industry for
their livelihood. Agriculture provides significant indirect benefits
as well. Over seven million tourists spend $1.6 billion each year
experiencing the agricultural heritage, learning about the unique
culture of the Amish, and enjoying the abundance of fresh, local
foods. A critical component to sustaining agriculture is ensuring
adequate land to support a farming community.
2010 was another successful year for the Trust illustrated by
the preservation of 23 farms and over 1400 acres. Since 1988,
Lancaster Farmland Trust has preserved over 360 farms with
almost 100 miles of streams. Many of these waterways flow into
the Chesapeake Bay. Through its Smart Farms program, the
Trust continues to provide ways to assist farmers in utilizing best
management practices that will help restore the health of the Bay.
One of the key strategies to protect and restore the Chesapeake
Bay is to preserve more farmland in the watershed, and the Trust
plays a critical role in these efforts.
More reasons for preserving farmland could easily be
highlighted, and the benefits of preserving Lancaster County
farmland are immeasurable. It’s hoped that these few words will
encourage more thinking about the importance of farmland
preservation and Lancaster Farmland Trust.
Thank you for your support of the Trust’s mission to preserve
and steward the beautiful, productive farmland of Lancaster County
that reflects our heritage, supports our economy, nurtures our
health, and enhances our quality of life. If local farmers continue
to be supported and land remains available for agricultural use, we
will succeed in our goal of safeguarding a valuable way of life for
future generations, ensuring an adequate, fresh, food supply and
protecting the quality of our environment.

Through the use of matching grants from the Lancaster
County Commissioners and the Lancaster County
Community Foundation, Lancaster Farmland Trust was able
to maximize the impact of contributions and preserve more
treasured farmland in 2010. With the support of individuals
like you, the County of Lancaster, and private foundations,
the Trust preserved 23 farms and over 1,400 acres of farmland
last year.
The 23 farms preserved in 2010 are classic illustrations of
our agricultural heritage and the variety of farming operations
traditionally found in Lancaster County. These mainly
Amish-run dairies and produce and livestock operations
create a well diversified farm economy that is not dependent
on any one area for its success.
Because of your generosity and ongoing commitment to
our mission, the Trust continues to have a positive impact on
preserving the precious landscape of Lancaster County that

Protecting and Stewarding Our Land
In 2010, the Trust continued to not only preserve farmland, but also encourage wise use of our
precious agricultural soils by assisting owners of preserved properties with improving conservation
practices on their farms. Through the Trust’s Smart Farms program, staff works one on one with owners
of preserved farms to help them implement environmentally conscious farming methods. These best
management practices can improve the economic viability of a farm while helping to improve the
health of local streams and the Chesapeake Bay at the same time.
Best management practices (BMPs) are pollution prevention and reduction methods that can
minimize risks to the environment without sacrificing agriculture’s economic productivity. Last year,
through its Smart Farms workshop series, the Trust trained over 100 farmers to be better stewards
of the land. Conservation plans were developed for 15 farmers. A conservation plan identifies best
management practices that will meet the goals and objectives of the farmer while protecting natural
resources such as soil, water, plants, and animals.
As part of its ongoing stewardship efforts, the Trust also helped farmers convert 822 acres of land
to no-till farming. No-till is a method of growing crops without disturbing the soil. It increases the
amount of water and nutrients in the soil and decreases erosion.
These efforts to encourage best management practices allow the Trust to preserve and steward the
high quality agricultural soils that we have been given in Lancaster County. The Trust’s relationship
with the local farming community is critical in meeting new environmental challenges and will allow
this special way of life and unique cultural heritage to continue for generations to come.
