Trust Has Banner Year
When I pause to reflect on the past year at Lancaster
Farmland Trust I am awed by the accomplishments we have
achieved – the Trust closed out 2007 with 35 farms and 2,252
acres preserved, exceeding the year’s goal by 252 acres. The Trust
not only surpassed the goals set for the year, but also purchased
an office building in the heart of Lancaster County’s treasured
farmland, developed new programs, and concentrated our efforts
on partnerships to help extend our preservation efforts.
Lancaster Farmland Trust now ranks second in the state in
the number of conservation easements held by a private land
trust and, in 2007, the Trust preserved more land with easements
than any other land trust in the state. Lancaster Farmland Trust
is the only land trust in Pennsylvania – and one of the few in the
nation – that preserves only farmland. The Trust focuses solely
on preserving the richest, non-irrigated soils in the world so that
our families can continue to enjoy the fresh, local foods those
farms provide.
Our Board of Trustees and staff have been working diligently
to meet the goals of our strategic plan, and we are hopeful that
we will reach the 20,000 acres preserved mark by the end of 2008.
Since the Trust’s beginning in 1988, many people have given
their time, energy, money, and dedication to preserving farmland
in Lancaster County. From three farms and 300 acres saved in
that first year, the Trust has pushed forward and upward.
It is an exciting time to be involved with farmland preservation
and I feel a sense of urgency when I see development encroaching
all around us. Our precious farmland and its agricultural resources
are inherent to the quality of life that we all enjoy in Lancaster
County. The Board of Trustees and staff are dedicated to using
our financial resources wisely in our efforts, and I thank you for
your support of our mission to protect our home, our harvest, and
our heritage.

Farms Preserved in 2007
2007 was a year filled with
achievements
for Lancaster Farmland Trust and farmland preservation in Lancaster County. Lancaster
County now ranks number one in the nation for farmland preservation with over 79,000
acres preserved due to combined efforts of the Trust and the
Lancaster County Agricultural Preserve Board. The Trust
preserved 35 farms and 2,252 acres of Lancaster
County farmland in 2007.

are Farming Smart!

One of the principal goals of farmland preservation is the protection of natural resources.
Lancaster Farmland Trust recognizes that the conservation of natural resources is essential to
the quality of life of the community and the long-term viability of agriculture. To this end,
the Trust recently launched a new initiative to provide information and technical assistance
on best management practices to preserved farm owners. “Smart Farms”, as the program is
called, is generously funded by grants from the 1675 Foundation and the Keith Campbell
Foundation.
Smart Farms has achieved great success in the first two years of a three-year pilot
program. More than 300 visits have been made to preserved farms to assess the conservation
practices and offer assistance with implementing new techniques; 120 farmers have attended
workshops to learn about best management practices; and, over 1,000 acres on 47 farms have
been converted to no-till planting, helping to ensure that the rich, productive soils will stay
on the land and not in our waterways. In addition, funding from the grants has been used
to provide extensive training to staff on environmentally sensitive farming practices and to
form partnerships with other organizations to ensure the long-term success of the program.
Lancaster Farmland Trust’s efforts over the past 20 years to preserve the rich, productive
soils of Lancaster County will help ensure that fresh, local foods will be available for future
generations and the beautiful landscape remains unchanged forever. Now, through Smart
Farms, the work of the Trust has regional and national implications as well. Lancaster County’s
1440 miles of streams and creeks drain into the Susquehanna and the Chesapeake Bay. The
activities that take place in Lancaster County – especially those related to agriculture and
increased development – play a critical role in the health of our watersheds. Now, through its
Smart Farms program, Lancaster Farmland Trust is working to ensure that farmers are good
stewards of all of our natural resources.

2007 Financial Overview
Landowners who preserve their farms with Lancaster Farmland Trust donate a significant portion of the value of the development
rights on their properties. In 2007, the Trust spent just over $1.5 million to preserve 35 farms with a total appraised value of $9,822,619
