We’re piecing together the landscape...
ONE FARM at a TIME
Lancaster Farmland Trust enjoyed a record-breaking
year in 2005, preserving 27 farms and over 1,600 acres of cherished
farmland. Although development pressure continues to bear down
on Lancaster County from all sides, the Trust’s accomplishments
encourage me to believe that we can make a difference in our future,
one farm at a time.
The Trust is grateful to all who have responded to our request for
help in protecting this unique landscape we call home. Our success
would not be possible without the generosity of individuals and
businesses that care about this special place. I am very appreciative of
the partnerships we formed in 2005 with Turkey Hill Dairy, Strasburg
Rail Road, and the Lancaster County Commissioners. Their support
not only helped us preserve more farms but also recognized the
importance of our work. In addition, the Board of Trustees, the Trust
staff, and our working committees are commended for their ongoing
commitment and dedication. A successful organization requires
the time and talents of many individuals, and we are fortunate to
have a wealth of knowledge and experience serving in a variety of
capacities.
Most importantly, our success would not be possible without the
devotion of the farm families we work with everyday. When a family
decides to preserve their land with the Trust, it is a commitment to
future generations as well as to the land. We deeply appreciate the
promise that these landowners make to the future of agriculture in
Lancaster County. Agriculture is more than just a business; it is part
of a living history and cultural heritage.
We are very blessed to live in this time and place. Thanks to
the vision of those who have gone before and to those who carry
the mission forward today, we are preserving our valuable land and
way of life for those who will follow. Thank you for your part in the
success we enjoyed in 2005. May 2006 be even better!

With the launch of innovative partnerships and
record support from donors, 2005 was a strong year
for the Trust. By year’s end, Lancaster Farmland
Trust preserved 27 farms and over 1,600 acres.

established several partnerships in 2005 to
find innovative ways to preserve farmland.
For example, the first farm was preserved through the Strasburg Rail Road partnership, in a
record-breaking 10 days. The 90 acre farm, owned by Charles and Janet Leaman of Ronks,
Paradise Township, was preserved by the Trust on September 22, 2005. The Leamans had
been thinking about preserving their farm for a long time and when they heard that a
nearby farm was sold to developers, it prompted them to move ahead with their decision.
The Trust met with the Leamans and was able to quickly preserve the farm just 10 days
after meeting with the owners. “We are very excited about preserving this first farm along
the Strasburg rail route, and we are hopeful that other farmers along the railroad line will
make a decision to save their land as well,” said Karen Martynick, Executive Director of
the Trust. “We are thrilled that this picturesque landscape will now be protected forever,”
Martynick continued.
Another innovative partnership helped the Trust preserve a 97 acre farm owned by Mr.
and Mrs. Graybill Becker in Warwick Township. Funding to preserve this farm was made
possible by The Seraph Foundation, a private family foundation, which gave the Trust
$81,400 designated for the preservation of this farm. In addition, the Lancaster County
Community Foundation provided a matching grant for the project. The farm was a joint
preservation effort with Warwick Township using Transferable Development Rights
(TDRs). In a TDR program, the development rights are purchased from the farmer and
then made available through the township to a developer who agrees to develop in areas
the township has designated for growth. The farmland is strategically important because it
links two adjacent preserved farms creating a 500 acre block of preserved farmland.
The Trust used another creative idea, “Acres for Auction,” to preserve Janet Rosenfeld’s
54.63 acre farm in West Hempfield Township. Acres of the Rosenfeld farm were “sold” for
$500 each at the Trust’s annual dinner in November, raising enough money to preserve
this farm, which is rented to neighboring farmers to grow support crops.
