ANNUAL REPORT December, 2014 NEWSLETTER News & Updates for Ben Appelbaum Foundation Supporters The Ben Appelbaum Foundation is an organization established to honor the memory of Ben Appelbaum, a person of vision, energy and optimism. The Foundation will continue Ben's tradition of providing individuals with the inspiration, guidance and practical assistance they need to undertake worthwhile entrepreneurial or charitable activities that offer long-range benefits to society. Our mentoring and advisory network is available to qualified individuals in the Tri-State Metropolitan area (NY, NJ, CT). The Ben Appelbaum Foundation is an equal opportunity organization. From the President Dear Friends and Supporters, The Holiday Season is a great time for reflection and planning for the future. Here at the Ben Appelbaum Foundation we are taking this opportunity to assess our impact over the past 15 years while simultaneously planning for the next 15. Doreen Berne, the only executive director we have ever employed, is retiring. In the process of hiring Rebecca Youngerman, the Foundation has embarked on a full throttled internal review and environmental scan. We hope to spruce up our program offerings and operations in the coming year to better reflect the current entrepreneurial environment. It should be an exciting enterprise. We hope you all have a great holiday season and begin the New Year in a vital spirit. Joe Appelbaum, President BAF Announces New Board Members and New Executive Director We are pleased to welcome an exceptional group of new board members in 2014: Shai Vichness, Stacey Antine, Scott McGrath, and Josh Fischer (not pictured). As a former mentee, Stacey brings an intimate knowledge of what it takes to start a business and how mentoring can help. Josh and Shai have strong business credentials and also are longtime friends of the Appelbaum family. Scott has already helped us create and carry out the first BAF Master Class program last year with his considerable experience in nonprofit programs and training. All will be bringing their "A" game to help BAF advise more mentees. Thank you for joining the team! Becca's extensive experience in nonprofit management and business programming will be a great asset to the organization. She and Doreen will continue to work together through the end of the year to make the transition smooth and keep all the programs running. Find Becca and BAF on Linked In and share your expertise! BAF Mentees Win Big! Congratulations to our Master Class 2014 winner Steve Kaufman, CEO and inventor of Quikiks Hands Free Shoes (www.quikiks.com). His award included a free entry to the Institute for Entrepreneurial Leadership/Workshop In Business Opportunity (IFELWIBO) Biz Plan & Pitch Competition, and in November, Steve won their finals and a $10,000 prize! Thanks to IFEL Executive Director Jill Johnson for the opportunity for Steve to take part in the program. (www.wibo.org). Amy Saekow, a new BAF mentee this fall, also won an IFEL/WIBO pitch contest prize of $1,000 in the food category with her presentation of Tisana Herbal Beverage Elixirs (www.tisana.co). Mentee Anne Bonfilglio, Founder of the Partnership for Student Advancement, was a finalist in The Funding Network competition, where she was supported by pledges of $15,000 in a one-night crowd funding event. PSA provides aptitude testing and coaching services for high school students from underserved communities (www.psapartnership.org). TFN has matched more than 5,000 donors with more than 600 projects around the world (www.tfn-usa.org). Mentee Sue Matthews received the 2014 Mary Schnack Award from the Women’s Leadership Exchange, for her work funding pediatric cancer research through the foundation she started with her daughter Taylor, who she lost to cancer at age 16, after a 5 year battle. TayBandz/Kids Curing Cancer funds specialized research projects at MSKCC and NIH. (www.taybandz.org) Page 2 BAF Annual Newsletter December 2014 Director’s Report: Changing of the Guard After 14 years, I am sadly saying goodbye as the Executive Director of the Ben Appelbaum Foundation. It has been quite a journey for me as well as for the organization. When I started in 2000, the entire board was mentoring just two mentees, we mailed out quarterly newsletters via snail mail to about 300 people, and 50 friends and family came to the annual event at the Hilton. We’ve often said that if we engage and attract people who did not know Ben, then we’d have a successful organization. We have certainly achieved that goal! We’ve grown from those two mentees to nearly 150, and we are adding more each year. Through our workshops and new think tank programs, we have worked with more than 100 additional entrepreneurs and managers of nonprofit organizations. Plus, more experts and advisors have become involved through mentoring, consulting and teaching. We are sending out monthly email blasts to over 1,500 people, and last year 300 people came to our annual event at the Yale Club, including many first timers. Our board has grown as well; we’ve brought on new members, including a younger cohort and people who did not know Ben. With Rebecca joining the team as the new full-time Executive Director with an office in NYC, we will have exactly what is needed for the continued vibrant growth of the Foundation. She will develop additional outreach and advisory efforts, keep up with the latest technology and new communication strategies, and create new programs designed to help even more individuals starting businesses or nonprofits. All this has been done in memory of Ben, emulating his encouragement and enterprising support for so many during his lifetime. I am proud to have been part of the success and growth of the organization and look forward to a new generation of innovation with Rebecca at the helm! Doreen Berne I am thrilled to join the Ben Appelbaum Foundation and continue to build on the success driven by BAF’s Board of Directors and Doreen, while paying tribute to Ben Appelbaum’s entrepreneurial spirit. For over a dozen years, I have worked with a diverse range of mission-driven individuals and organizations across the country. In my recent professional role managing American University’s business school alumni network, and through my extensive volunteer experience, I have been fortunate to partner with talented and passionate people, advancing initiatives that directly serve entrepreneurs and business owners. I’m honored and excited to apply these experiences as I lead BAF into this next chapter. It is an exciting time for NYC’s entrepreneurial population and BAF. In a November 2014 study, the Center for an Urban Future reported that New York’s self-employed population has increased more than 30% between 2000 and 2012. I am confident that our mission is now more relevant than ever, and the opportunity for impact is great. In fact, I have already experienced the power of our network. During my first two months, I’ve seen a mentee secure his organization’s trademark with assistance from a board member, and a 2014 Master Class participant win the Workshop in Business Opportunities (WIBO) pitch competition, thanks to a connection from BAF. Another successful early BAF mentee organization gave back by providing guidance to a current mentee at a recent ThinkTank. An amazing testament to the Foundation's leadership and our community. I believe that we can increase our reach by enhancing our existing programs and strengthening strategic partnerships. We have a tremendous network of individuals, and important services to offer. I look forward to working with you to continue Ben’s tradition of providing people with the inspiration, guidance and practical assistance they need to undertake worthwhile entrepreneurial activities. Rebecca Youngerman Spotlight on New Mentees Marial Quezada & Fantasia Painter: AlterNATIVE Education We are thrilled to be working with Marial Quezada and Fantasia Painter, Columbia University graduates who have started a unique nonprofit organization. They were recommended to us via Steve Holt and Skip Vichness who met Columbia Professor Dan Press at a Facing History event last year. Dan is the faculty advisor to the group, AlterNATIVE Education, a peer-education and mentorship initiative that partners colleges students with Native communities. The week-long summer program builds mentor-mentee relationships where students and alumni from Columbia University visit reservations in New Mexico and teach Native high school youth about their identity and past. The goal is to form a more engaged, empowered, and educationcentered Native future. (http://anativeeducation.com/) BAF think tank advisors included Jeff Ackerman, Allison Wittenberg, Dawn Ewing, and Gregg Licht. Consultant and board coach Michael Davidson is also working with them to identify and solve start-up nonprofit management issues. (NBC News interview: http://www.nbcnews.com/news/education/proud-heritage-mentors-teach-native-studentsabout-their-pasts-n184271 ) Dana Wilson & Shurnette Henry, PEAK Program Papillon Financial Dana Wilson and Shurnette Henry found out about BAF through our 2013 annual event outreach, and they immediately stepped up to the plate by volunteering on some of out think tanks in 2013. This year, they started a new program as part of their financial services company, Papillon Financial Advisors, and reached out to BAF for guidance. Our board members Steve Holt and Doug Todd, along with volunteer advisor Dana Friedman of The Leo Group, participated in a think tank session to offer strategic planning, sales and marketing advice for their proprietary program, PEAK (Proactively Educating & Acquiring Knowledge), which combines financial education with life skills exercises and business training, to help participants understand who they are as it relates to their money habits. (www.papillonfinancial.com) “Thank you for assembling this great group of individuals for us to work with!” Dana Wilson & Shurnette Henry, Papillon Financial Ana Lita: Global Bioethics Initiative Ana Lita is the Executive Director of the Global Bioethics Initiative, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting interdisciplinary research and public information on bioethical issues. The organization supports programs that identify solutions to global health problems, engage in public debates on emerging technologies and their potential impact at the intersection of health, biotechnology and medicine. BAF’s think tank advisors, Sharon Douglas, Linda Seligson and Paul Krubiner, provided advice on strategic planning, team management, board development, fundraising and programming ideas. (globalbioethics.org/) Amy Saekow: Tisana Herbal Beverage Elixir Amy Saekow was referred to BAF from our strategic partner, Business Mentor NY, an initiative of New York’s Empire State Development Agency. Amy’s business journey started with a personal need to find herbal remedies for her skin condition. She gave up a job in finance to create her brand Tisana Herbal Elixirs, and is currently considering various ways to roll out the product, at health food stores, farmers markets, yoga studios and spas, etc. Our think tank team of advisors included former mentee Stacey Antine, CEO of HealthBarn USA, David Benzaquen and Mary McGovern of Plant Based Solutions, and Rebecca Johnson, a health educator. They provided Amy with great ideas for marketing, production and best practices and connections in the health food industry. The classes were held over several months, allowing the mentees to bond and learn from each other, as well as analyze their marketing plan and develop their pitch to investors or donors. The launch night final event provided an opportunity to network with potential investors. Our Master Class mentees for 2013-14 were: Danny Alotta, Joy Juice; Pamela Capalad & Andrea Ferrero, Pockets Change; Amie Hamlin & Todd Cavaluzzi, Coalition for Healthy School Food; Melinda Huff, Mirame Swimwear; Steve Kaufman, Quikiks Hands-Free Shoes; Jason Maas, The Artist Volunteer Center; Sue Matthews, Tay-Bandz Kids Curing Cancer; Berit Rostad, Jennifer Butts & Trisha Pasternack, The Successful Child; Tabitha St. Bernard, Tabii Just; Kenrick Wagner, EMBASSY Kids; and Lori Zimmerman, Pups @ Play Doggie Day Care. The initial class on branding was presented by Farra Trompeter of Big Duck, a strategy group for nonprofits. This was followed by a class on SWOT analysis and competitive scanning by Scott McGrath; a class on financial operations by Adam Weiss; a practice pitch night; and the culminating launch night final event, in front of investors, donors, and friends. Thanks to our pitch night practice judges: Lindsey Appelbaum, Jonathan Lawrence, and Jeremy Lowenstein. And additional special thanks to our launch night finals judges: Richard Foster, Michael Davidson, and Rick Finkel. He encouraged me to become a Board Member of the American Camping Association which I did. Ben always was interested in helping others and especially those in the not-for-profit sector. We worked together to provide support for a struggling not-for -profit camp. I always looked forward to working with him. It was a pleasure and privilege to work with Ben. And this year BAF connected me with an agency that helped my organization as well. Thank you! Our mentees couldn’t succeed without your help! In 2014 we held a number of workshops in addition to our Master Class program. Michael Davidson, aka “The Board Coach,” presented two very successful workshops for nonprofits: Managing Working Boards and Board Dynamics. Both were enthusiastically received and well attended by our mentees and outsiders. They have helped Naomi with strategic planning, board development ideas and insurance questions.
