Ihram is th e first of th e rites of H ajj an d U m ra h . "Labbayk for Umrah", if he intends only Umrah "Labbayk for Umrah with release until Hajj", if he intends Hajj at-Tamattu’ It m e an s the intention (niyyah) to en te r the state of consecration for hajj or U m rah. T h e tim e for pe rfo rm an c e of U m rah is an y tim e throughout the year. T h e tim e for H ajj is during the H ajj m onths, w hich are: Shawwal, Dhul-Qa'dah and the first ten days of Dhul hijjah. The duties of Hajj and Umrah begin with ihram at the m eeqat (a point som e distance from M akkah beyond which a pilgrim may not pass without ihram - Refer to page 10). W h e n so m eo n e intending H ajj or U m rah rea c h e s the m e eq a t on land by car or other transport, he should m a k e ghusl (a co m plete bath) and use scent if it is ea s y for him , but th ere is no sin upon him if h e d oes not bath e. T h e n he w e a rs two clean w hite ihram g arm ents - o n e w rap p e d aro u n d his w aist and the other over his shoulders. T h e re is no particular dress for a w o m a n in ihram , but she w ea rs w h a te v e r clothing a d eq u a tely covers her body of an y color, as long a s it is not conspicuously decorative. "Labbayk for jThen, he/she makes the intention of ihram for Umrah or Hajj, saying:| Umrah and ( ' See page 15 (or an explanation of these terms.) Hajj al-Qiran* W hen the pilgrim com es by se a or by air, it has becom e custom ary for the captain or a crew m em ber to announce approach to the m eeqat so that the pilgrims am ong the "Labbayk for passengers can prepare them selves for ihram. Today it is called "A b yar AM", and is 4 50 kilo m eters from M akkah a l-M u ka rra m a h . the m ee q at fo r th o se com ing from o r th ro u g h Syria, Jordan, northern H ijaz, N orth A frica and Egypt. It is near th e tow n o f Rabigh, 183 kilo m eters from M akkah, fro m w h ic h people now ad a ys e n te r ihram . Qarn al-Manazil the m eeqat for those coming from or through Najd (eastern Arabia). It is now called "as-Sayl al-Kabeer" Yalamlam the m eeqat for those coming from Yemen and farther south.Today, people assum e ihram from as-Sadiyah, w hich is 92 kilo m eters fro m M akkah. Dhatu Irq the meeqat for those coming from the direction of Iraq, which is 94 kilom eters from Makkah al-M ukarram ah. It is o b lig a to ry fo r everyo ne intending hajj or Um rah to assum e ihram before e ntering th e a re a beyond th e se points. A n y w h o kn ow in g ly p a s s through w ith o u t ihram m ust return to th e m e e q a t fo r ihram , o th erw ise th e violatio n re quires th e s la u g h te r o f a sheep in M akkah for distrib utio n to th e poor. "They are for those who come from them and those from beyond them who intend Hajj and Umrah."____________ (Al-Bukhari and Muslim) Residents of Makkah assume ihram for hajj from Makkah itself, but for Umrah they must go to an area outside the borders of the haram sanctuary, the nearest of which is at-Taneem. Those who live inside the meeqat area, for example, in Jeddah, Masturah, Badr, Bahrah, Umm Salam or ash-Shara'i, assume ihram from their homes. The P r o p h e t s a id , "One in ihram must not marry, be wedded or propose." (M uslim ) # A w o m a n during ihram is not perm itted to w e a r glo ves or a niqab or burqa" (a tig h tly fitted face m ask). W hen th e re are unrelated m en n e a rb y she co vers her fa ce w ith part of her headcover. 0 A m an in ihram is not perm itted to co ver his head w ith th e ihram g arm e n t or a ny hea d ge a r such as a cap, cloth h ea d cove r or turban. If he should do so having fo rgo tten or o ut o f ign o ra n ce o f th e ruling, he should rem ove it as soon as he is a w are o f it a nd no H r — ^ © T h e m an is also not allow ed to w e a r g a rm e n ts stitched to fit the body or part o f it, such as a gow n or robe, a shirt, pants, u nd e rw e ar o r shoes. A dditionally, if a m an c o v e rs his head w ith a cap or cloth o ut o f fo rg e tfu ln e s s o r ignorance he m ust re m o ve it as soon as he re m e m be rs o r know s, and th e re w ill be no ransom d u e fro m him . Those intending Hajj choose one of the three kinds: Tamattu Umrah followed by hajj separately which requires the sacrifice of an animal 2. Qiran Umrah followed by hajj which requires the sacrifice of an animal 3. Ifrad hajj alone which does not require the sacrifice of an animal One assumes ihram for Umrah during the Hajj months (which are Shawwal, Dhul-Qa'dah and the first ten nights of Dhul-Hijjah), saying, "Labbayk for Umrah with release until Hajj". After completing the Tawaf and sa'i of Umrah and cutting the hair, he/she is released from ihram and all its restrictions. Then on the 8th of Dhul-Hijjah he assumes ihram again for Hajj from his place of residence and sets out to complete the Hajj rites. He is required to offer a sacrifice of a sheep or goat, or seven people may share in the sacrifice of a camel or cow. If he cannot do so, then he must fast three days during Hajj and seven days when he returns home. The pilgrim intends one ihram for both Umrah and Hajj, saying, "Labbayk for Umrah and Hajj". Upon reaching Makkah, he performs tawaf al-qudum and sa'i, which serves as the sa'i for both Umrah and Hajj. He does not cut his/her hair and remains in ihram until the 8th of Dhul-Hijjah when the Hajj rites begin. Then he completes the Hajj, except that he need not perform sa'i a second time. He, also, is required to sacrifice a sheep or goat or share in a camel or cow as one of seven. One intends ihram for Hajj only, saying, "Labbayk for Hajj". In Makkah he performs tawaf al-qudum and sai for Hajj, remaining in ihram until the rites are completed. He is not required to sacrifice an animal since he did not perform both Umrah and Hajj. tamattu is preferable for those pilgrims who do not bring sacrificial animals along with them, and this is what the Prophet 5g instructed his companions. (Those who bring sacrificial animals with them do Qiran. and the residents of Makkah. Ifrad only.) ' QIRAN IFRAD TAMATTU Ihram from the meeqat for all -p ~ Tawaf al-qudum - { 2 j Sai for Hajj Tawaf al-qudum Tawaf for Umrah Sai for Hajj and Sai for Umrah Cutting or shaving Remaining in ihram and observing its restrictions until the Day of Sacrifice (10 Dhul-Hijjah) Remaining in ihram and observing its restrictions until the Day of Sacrifice (10 Dhul-Hijjah) Complete release from ihram Assumes ihram once again for Hajj on 8 Dhul-Hiiiah For ifrad, tawaf al-qudum is a sunnah act and there is no problem if it is omitted. i— I If one performs tawaf al-qudum and then goes directly to Mina, he should perform ' t i l l the sai for hajj after tawaf al-ifadhah._______________________________ The small boy below the age of understanding has his stitched garments removed by his guardian, who recites the talbiyah for him. Thus, he is in the state of ihram and is to be prevented from all that is prohibited to an adult in ihram. The intention is made for the small girl also by her guardian, who recites the talbiyah fo her, putting her into the state of ihram. she is also to be prevented from all that is prohibited to an adult. The body and clothing of a small child must be pure during tawaf because it is like salah, which requires taharah. When the boy or girl is old enough to understand, he/she assumes ihram with the guardian's permission and does everything the adults do. W hen a person intending U m rah reaches M akkah, It is d esirab le to bathe im m e dia te ly and then g o straight to al-M a sjid al-H aram , in w hich is situated th e A n cie nt H ouse (the K abah), fo r th e rites o f U m rah. And it is acceptable, also, if he d oe s not bathe. He e nters al-M a sjid a l-H aram w ith his right fo o t, saying, A udhu b illa h il-athe e m i w a bi w a jih il-ka re e m i w a sultanih il-qadeem i m in a sh -sh a yta n ir-ra je e m ...A lla h u m m a aftah lee a bw ab a rahm atik. (I seek refuge in Allah, the Suprem e, and in His noble countenance and His eternal authority from Satan, the accursed.. O Allah, open for me the gates of Your mercy.) T h is su pp lica tion (duaa) is w h a t is said upon entering any m asjid. (N arrated by Abu D aw ud - sa he e h) He then heads toward the honored Kabah to begin tawaf. It is from the sunnah fo r a m an to bare his right sh ou ld e r and arm (idhtib). T h is is done by passing th e upper ihram w ra p p e r under the right a rm p it and co vering the left sh o u ld e r w ith both ends. Then he b eg ins the ta w a f o f seven circuits, starting at the Black Stone. It is a sunnah act to kiss the Black Stone if one is able to reach it without harming people by crowding or pushing. And it is sinful to insult, strike or harm any Muslim. When the area is crowded, it is sufficient to point to the Black Stone from a distance, saying, "Allahu akbar" without stopping as one passes by it. It is not p erm issib le to push o thers o r harm th e m in any w ay T he pilgrim co ntin ue s to circle th e K abah, re m em bering and m entioning A llah, asking His fo rg iv e ness and su pplicating w ith a ny d u 'a a ' he w is h e s or reciting th e Q ur'an th ro u g h o u t th e seven circu its. He should not raise his vo ice reciting particu la r s u p p lic a tions, as th is d isturb s o th ers w ho are doing ta w a f. As one passes ar-Rukn al-Yamani (the Yemeni Corner), he to u ch e s it w ith his hand if he can do so easily. He should not kiss it or w ipe his hand o ve r it as so m e do, co n tra ry to th e sunnah o f th e P rop h et ” . W hen unable to to u ch it w ith his hand, he should co ntin ue in h is ta w a f w ith o u t pointing to it or saying "A llahu akbar". It is from the su nn a h, as one p erform s ta w a f, to recite b etw e en the Yem eni C o rn er and the B lack Stone: "R ab b an a atina fid -d u n ya hasanatan w a fil- a khirati hasanatan w a q in a 'a d h a b an-nar." "O ur Lord, g ive us in th is w orld w h a t is good a nd in the H e re afte r w h a t is good and p rote ct us fro m the p un ish m e nt of th e Fire." 5j2J\ (Q u r'a n - 2 : 2 0 1 ) In th is w a y the ta w a f is co m pleted, beginning each circu it a t the B lack S tone and e n d in g at it. For m en it is sunnah to w a lk briskly w ith sm all steps _,t W alking inside th e H ijr during taw af. T h is a ctu ally inva lid ates th e taw af [ beca u se th e H ijr is part o f th e Kabah an d inside it. Touching and w iping the h ands o ver all the corners of the K a 'b a h or its w alls, door, covering, or M aqam Ibrahim . All o f th is is not law ful as it is fro m the inn o va tio ns in religion (bidah), w hich w a s n ot done by th e P rophet ^ . T h e pushing and crow d in g o f m en and w om en during taw af, e spe cia lly at the B lack S to n e and M aqam Ibrahim . T h is should be strictly avoided. Upon com p letio n o f ta w a f o ne sh ou ld : 1. C over his right sh o u ld e r once again. 2. P ray tw o ra k 'a h s possible w ith e ase; M asjid al-haram . sunnah in w hich one firs, rakah: behind M aqam Ibrahim if it is o th erw ise in any p a rt o f alT h is p raye r is a co n firm e d recites (after a l-F a tih ah ) in the Surah al-Kafirun and in the second rakah: Surah al-lkhlas. If he re cite s o th e r parts of th e Q ur'an it is acceptable. iliS? A fte r the com p letio n of taw af, one goes to begin his sai of seven trips at as-safa, reciting :"lnnas-safa wal-m arwata min shaair illah "Indeed, as-safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah) {2 :1 57 }, and adding, "I begin w ith th a t w ith w h ich Allah began". T h is w a s th e practice o f th e P ro p h e t as narrated in saheeh M uslim . (Then he stands on a s-sa fa facing th e K abah, praising and glorifying Allah and supplicating Him, saying: "La ilaha ill-Allahu wahdahu la shareeka lah. Lahulmulku w a lahul-ham du w a huwa ala kulli shay'in qadeer. La ilaha ill-A llahu w a h da h u, a nja za w a dah u w a nasara abdahu w a h aza m al-ah za ba w a h d a h ." "There is no god but A llah alone w ith no partner. His is the d om inio n and His is [all] praise and H e is over all th ing s com petent. T h ere is no god but A lla h alone; He fu lfilled His prom ise and su pported His s e rv a n t and d efeated the [enem y] allies alone." [ He repeats th is th ree tim es, su pplicating in betw een w ith anything he w ish es, and if he d oe s less than that, th e re is no fault. H e raises his hands o nly w hen su pp lica ting , and d oe s not point w ith them w hen saying, "A llahu akbar" (w hich is a co m m o n m istake am ong m an y pilgrim s). He then d e sce nd s fro m as-safa tow ard al-M a rw a h and su pp lica te s w ith any d u a a th a t com e s to m ind fo r him self, his fa m ily and th e M uslim s in general. W hen reaching the green m arker, m en (but not w o m e n) sh ou ld run until th e y c o m e to the second m arker, ^ bIip* after which they walk as usual until they arrival at al-Marwh. Upon reaching al-M arw ah, 9 one fa ce s the Kabah and su pp lica te s as he did at a s-sa fa w ith a ny su pp lica tion s he w ishes. He co ntin ue s w a lkin g to th e green m arker, th e n runs betw een th e tw o (m en only) and then w a lks to assafa. Thus, he has com p leted tw o trips - one fro m a s-sa fa to al-M arw ah and a n o th e r from alM arw ah to as-safa. He co ntin ue s until he fin ishes seven trips, ending a t al-M arw ah. 9 There is no blame upon him /her for com pleting the sai on a w heelchair if overcom e by fatigue or illness. £>)fA woman who has menstrual or postpartum bleeding 9 can co m p lete her sai (but not taw af) because th e a rea o f sai is not a part of al-M a sjid al-haram . A m ong the com m on e rro rs co m m itte d is the running of women between the two green markers. 9 A fter the com pletion of sai, the man shaves or short ens his hair (shaving is preferable). W hen shorten ing the hair, some of it should be cut from every part of the head. 9 The wom an cuts from the length of her hair what is about equal to the width of a finger. W ith this the rites o f U m rah are com plete and one is free from all the re strictio ns o f ihram R V wk W hen reaching the green marker, men (but not wom ent) should run until they com e to the second m arker --T h e D ay o f Tarwiyah T h e rites o f hajj begin on th e 8th o f D h ul-H ijjah, w hich is called the d ay o f Tarwiyah. Before noon This day the pilgrim of Tamattu assum es ihram for Hajj in the m orning. Before doing so, he does what he did before the ihram for Umrah - bathing, using scent, etc. He m akes the intention for ihram from w herever he is staying or residing. T h ose o f Q iran and Ifrad are a lready in ihram . Pilgrim s in the state of ihram for Tam attu, Qiran and Ifrad all set out for M ina before noon, and Thuhr.asr, there they pray thuhr, asr, m aghrib and 'isha'. maghrib and Each prayer is done at its proper tim e and not isha, prayers com bined, but the four rakah prayers are shortened to two. '" W e a sk o f A llah His fa v o r and kind ne ss . . . mm fSP Arafah thuhr and asr prayer joined and shortened < l \ c ____ —— ____ ) After sunset Muzdalifah It is a sunnah practice for the pilgrim to stop at Namirah at noon for the thuhr and asr prayer and to hear the speech (khutbah) if possible. Otherwise, he should enter Arafah and be sure that he is inside its border. There are numerous road signs and posters showing the location of boundaries. The entire plain of 'Arafah is a standing place. The pilgrim should take care on this great day to make the best use of his/her time in reciting the talbiyah, seeking Allah's forgiveness, confirming His unity and praising Him. He should direct himself toward Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, with humility, exerting the utmost effort in supplication for himself, his spouse and children and his brother Muslims. At noontime, the imam delivers a speech to the people, reminding, advising and instructing them. Then he leads the pilgrims in the thuhr and asr prayer, joined and shortened, with one adhan and two iqamahs as the Prophet 5? did. No other prayer is performed before or afterwards. Pilgrims must be careful on this blessed day to avoid committing any sin which could cause them to lose some of the great reward of this noble day and HAJJ AND UMRAH GUIDE On the day of Arafah, m any pilgrim s comm it errors which should be brought to attention: ( X ) Sitting outside the borders of Arafah, remaining there until the sun sets, and after that leaving for Muzdalifah. W hoever does that has not performed Hajj. ( X ) Leaving Arafah before the setting of the sun. This is not perm issible as it is contrary to the practice of the Prophet sg . Anyone who does so must return before sunset, otherwise he will have to slaughter an animal in ransom. ( £ ) Crowding and pushing in order to climb to the top of M ount Arafah (the Mount of Mercy), rubbing one's hands on it and praying there. All this is from among the innovations that have no basis in the religion. Furthermore, it can be physically harmful. (% ) Facing the m ount during supplication. The sunnah is to face the Qiblah (direction of the Kabah)when supplicating. To Muzdalifah [ i l l '11111 111 I The caravans of pilgrims begin moving, with the blessing of Allah, toward al-Mashar al-Haram in Muzdalifah to pray the maghrib and isha prayers joined and shortened, with one adhan and two iqamahs as soon as they arrive. They then spend the night there, remembering Allah, praising and thanking Him for His favor upon them when He enabled them to be present in Arafah. Upon reaching Muzdalifah, some pilgrim s make the following mistakes: Hastening to pick up pebbles for stoning before praying maghrib and isha joined and shortened. (X ) Believing that the pebbles must be picked up only from Muzdalifah. r ^ T h e sunnah practice is to spend the night in Muzdalifah and to pray the fajr prayer there. P ra y th e m a g h rib a n d ish a jo in e d a n d sh o rte n e d It is perm issible for women, children, the weak or ill and their caretakers to leave for Mina after midnight. Spend the night in Muzdalifah Fajr prayer After the pilgrim performs the fajr prayer, it is desirable for him to stand at al-M ashar al-haram (which is a hill in Muzdalifah) or any other part of Muzdalifah, face the Qiblah, praise Allah and supplicate as much as possible. Then he should leave before sunrise. P<*s up seven pebbles On the way to Mina he/she picks up seven pebbles, slightly larger than a pea, for the rami (stoning) of the largest pillar (jam ratul-aqabah). The rest of the pebbles for rami are taken from Mina. To Mina The pilgrim s then continue toward Mina w hile reciting the talbiyah, humble in their rem em brance o f Allah. W hen th e pilgrim re ach es M ina he goes im m e dia te ly to th e large p illar (ja m ratul-a qa ba h ), w hich is th e one n earest to M akkah. T h e w om a n cuts a fin g e r's w ith fro m th e length of h er hair. T h is is the preferred o rd e r fo r th e se rites. H ow ever, if th e y are done in any o th e r o rd e r it is acceptable. This is the Day of Sacrifice and also the first day of the blessed Eed al-Adhha. For Muslims in every part of the earth and for the pilgrims, the blessed Eed al-A?ha is an especially joyful day wherein they rejoice in Allah's favor to them and sacrifice their animals, seeking nearness to Him. Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, wa lillahil-hamd." Among the errors committed by pilgrims during the rami (stoning) are: Stops reciting the talbiyah (^ )T h e belief of some that they are actually stoning devils, which leads them to angrily curse and insult Stom es the those devils. In fact, the rami is only for the remembrance of Allah. Recites takbeer for Eed (^ T h ro w in g large stones or even sandals or pieces of wood, and this is the kind of excess prohibited by the Prophet $ . (X )Pushing or fighting near the pillars in order to come near for the rami, which is a grave misdeed. The pilgrim has an obligation to treat his brothers gently. He should be certain that he is throwing the pebbles Slaughters the anim al into the proper place, which is within the circular wall, whether or not they hit the pillar. (^ T h ro w in g all of the pebbles at once, which actually counts as only one throw. The correct way is to throw one pebble after another while saying, "Allah akbar" with each one. When the pilgrim has stoned the large pillar (jamratulShaves head or cuts hair aqabah) and shaved or cut his hair, he is partially released from ihram and can wear his regular clothes. —; .3 4 r ~ He/she is then freed from all the restrictions of ihram _______ except marital intercourse. ______ Q ] | Upon reaching Mina on the morning of Eed day] hasten to stone the large pillar (jamratulaqabah), only, with seven pebbles, saying "Allahu akbar" with each throw. After stoning the large pillar on Eed morning, the pilgrim goes to Makkah to do seven circuits of tawaf al-ifadhah. After that he does seven trips of sai if his hajj is one of tamattu, or if he did not perform sa'i after tawaf alqudum in qiran or ifrad. It is permissible to delay tawaf alifadhah, even past the days of Mina (tashreeq) and upon his return to Makkah after stoning the pillars. Once the pilgrim has completed tawaf al-ifadhah he/she is freed from all the restrictions of ihram, including marital intercourse. These days begin with the eve of the 11th of Dhul-Hijjah. ** A fter perform ing ta w a f a l-ifadhah on the D ay o f S acrifice (the 10th), the pilgrim sh ou ld return to M ina to spend th e nights th a t precede th e th re e d ays of ta sh re e q, or at least tw o o f the nights fo r those w ho plan to leave a fte r tw o days. (A l-B u k h a ri a n d M u s lim ) HAJJ AND UMRAH GUIDE HE VISIT JteSJiD M adinah is the place to w hich the P rophet em igrated and w here he settled. W ithin it is the noble Prophet's Masjid. It is among the three that one may travel to visit, as the Prophet said, "One should not make a journey except to three masjids: al-M asjid al-H aram this, m y m asjid al-M asjid al- Aqsa A lthough visiting the Prophet's M asjid is not am ong the requirem ents of Hajj, and in fact has no connection w hatsoever to Hajj, it is law ful and desirable at any tim e throughout the year. W hen Allah has enabled a person to com e to the land of alharam ain (the tw o sacred m osques), it is a recom m ended practice fo r him to go to al-M adinah al-M unaw w arah to pray in the Prophet's M asjid and then offer greetings of salam to the M essenger of Allah . A ccording to hadith, prayer in the P rophet's M asjid is better than a thousand prayers anyw here else except al-M asjid al-haram . fo r a prayer in a l-M asjid a l-haram is w o rth 100 th ousand prayers. W hen the visitor com es to the Prophet's M asjid: H e/she enters w ith the right foot, saying, | "B ism illat^ w as-salatu w as-salam u ala rasulillah." | ^ (In the nam e of Allah, and blessings and peace be upon the M essenger of Allah.) "Audhu billahil-atheem i w a bi w ajihil-kareem i w a sultanihil-qadeem i m inash-shaytanir-rajeem ... Allahum m a aftah lee abw aba rahm atik." (I seek refuge in Allah, the Supreme, and in His noble countenance and His eternal authority from Satan, the accursed..0 Allah,open for me the gates of Your mercy.) W T h is is the correct supplication to be said upon entering any m asjid. (N arrated by Abu Daw ud - saheeh) A fter entering: U O ne should im m ediately pray tw o rakahs for tahiyyatul-m asjid, preferably in the R aw dhah if possible. O therw ise, he should pray in any p art of the M asjid. Then he m ay go to the grave of the P rophet and stand facing it. He greets him & by saying: ^ "As-salamu alayka ayyuhan-nabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh." (Peace be upon you, O Prophet and the m ercy of Allah and His blessings.) O ne m ay also supplicate w ith a duaa such as: "A llahum m a atihil-w asilata w al-fadhilata w abathhulm aqam al-m ahm udalladhi w aadtah. A llahum m ajzihi an um m atihi af?alal-jaza'." (O Allah, give him the right of intercession and the highest rank and resurrect him to the honored station that You prom ised him. O Allah, com pensate him for m m [service to] his um m ah w ith the best reward.) w C Then he steps slightly to the right to stand before the grave of Abu Bakr as-siddiq w here he g ree ts him with salam and supplicates, asking fo r him A lla h 's mercy, forgiveness and approval. Then he steps fu rth er to the right to stand before the grave of Um ar bin al-Khattab, greeting him w ith salam and supplicating, asking fo r him A lla h's mercy, forgiveness and approval. S 0 9 Note: It is noticed that some visitors to the Prophet's Masjid comm it errors which are considered among the blame worthy innovations (bidah) that have no basis in the religion and were never practiced by the sahabah, may Allah be pleased with them. Among these errors are: y W iping the hands over the grill of the room containing the grave and o th er parts o f the M asjid.______________ Facing the grave during supplication.________________ The correct way is to face the Qiblah when supplicating. Visit the graveyard o f al-Baqee, w hich contains the graves of m any sahabah, am ong them th a t of th e third caliph, Uthm an bin Affan. Visit the graves o f the m artyrs of Uhud, am ong w hom is H am zah bin A bdul-M uttalib - m ay Allah be pleased with all of them . There, the visito r greets th e m and supplicates fo r them . The Prophet ta u g h t his com panions w hen visiting graves to say: "A s-salam u alaykum ahlad-diyari min a l-m u'm ineena w al-m uslim eena, w a inna in sha' Allahu bikum lahiqun. Nasal A llaha lana w a lakum al-afiyah." (Peace be upon you, people of the graveyard fro m the believers and the M uslim s, and we, if Allah wills, w ill be joining you. W e ask of Allah fo r us and you w ell-being.) (N a rra te d b y M u slim ) It is also from th e sunnah, w hile the visito r is in M adinah, to go, after m aking w udhu, to the Q uba' M asjid, the first m asjid built in Islam, in order to pray there. A llah's M essenger ; did so and encouraged it. Sahl bin Hunayf, reported th a t the P rophet ss said, "A nyone w ho purifies him self in his house, then com es to Q uba' M asjid and perform s a prayer therein w ill have the rew ard o f an Urn rah." ... t (N a rra te d b y Ibn M a ja h - s a h e e h ) And Ibn U m ar reported th a t the P rophet used to go to the Q uba' M asjid both riding and w alking, and w ould pray in it tw o rakahs.
