Description of the activity
A group of students made
researches
and
studied
the
different kinds of houses where
Fasano inhabitants have lived from
the ancient times until today.

Cave settlements
From the IXth to XIVth century AD
Fasano area was characterized by a
rock habitat marking the typical
civilization of the “cave dwelling”.
This
phenomenon
was
been
encouraged by safety exigencies
and a particular morphological
feature of the land: really the
relative softness of the local rock has
permitted the excavation of the tuff
and the consequent building of
dwelling houses, workshops for
agricultural activities, churches and
cemeteries, often grouped into real
villages where people lived on
agricultural work and Christian
liturgies, mingling lay and monastic
elements.

“Grundtvig partnership 2011-1-BE2-GRU06-01709-6”
The Fasano cave settlements were mainly located in the so-called
“lame”, that’s to say drills created by the river erosion from hills to
coast. The continuous water action has indeed caused a ground sinking
and a difference in height altimetry that made possible the use of stone for
building purposes, shaping in this way the walls of the “lame” itself.

The “Masseria”
Fasano rural territory is highly scattered with “masserie”
(farmhouses): the name comes from “massae” indicating extensions
of private property land equipped with buildings, such as oil-mills,
cellars, storehouses and so on.
Each masseria can be considered as a flourishing cultivation and
breeding centre perfectly self-sufficient. There lived, on the superior
floor, the landholder with his family, and the workers, on the ground
floor.
GIOVANNI PASCOLI Lower Secondary School Center for Adults Education – Fasano
“Grundtvig partnership 2011-1-BE2-GRU06-01709-6”
Nowadays many “masserie” have changed their original destination of
use and are open to tourism: the agritourism (farm houses) or the
countryside bed & breakfast are the most used tourist formula. In these
structures it is possible to sleep, have breakfast in the open air, taste the
traditional cuisine of Apulia, have horse and bicycle rides or walk in full contact
with nature.
In a modern way nowadays it is possible to find also some “masserie” that
became locations for conventions or congresses, next to health
centers, SPAs, luxury five stars leading hotels.

At the same time
of “masserie”, in
the little village of
Fasano, typical
houses made with
tuff were build.

The old palaces
In the XIV-XVIII
centuries,
noblemen
lived in
impressive
palaces. You
can admire
them in the
main streets of
Fasano.

The house on the hills
During the summer, in order to escape
from the sultry weather of the city, the
inhabitants of Fasano are used to go
towards cooler places on the hills.
Nowadays, on the hills around Fasano,
there are a lot of villas with splendid
gardens.
GIOVANNI PASCOLI Lower Secondary School Center for Adults Education – Fasano
“Grundtvig partnership 2011-1-BE2-GRU06-01709-6”
The “trulli”
Beyond villas, on the hills there are “trulli”. A “trullo” is an ancient little
building made of stone, formed by a circular or square base and a coneshaped cupola, on top of which there is usually a pinnacle often
whitewashed, therefore it stands out of the grey stones under it.
On December 1996, the UNESCO inserted the "Trulli of Alberobello" into the
list of world wonders.
GIOVANNI PASCOLI Lower Secondary School Center for Adults Education – Fasano
“Grundtvig partnership 2011-1-BE2-GRU06-01709-6”
How are they built? Traditionally
the walls are built ‘a secco’
(without mortar) and are up to
2m thick, keeping the interior
cool during the hot summers
and warm in winter. The conical
roof, which rests on the walls, is
made up of three layers: square
limestone blocks, irregular stones
and a covering of “Chiancarelle”.
The “trullo” is often finished by an
ornamental pinnacle on top which
has a symbolic or religious
meaning. Painted onto the roof
there are often mystical symbols
which are different on each
“trullo”.
GIOVANNI PASCOLI Lower Secondary School Center for Adults Education – Fasano
“Grundtvig partnership 2011-1-BE2-GRU06-01709-6”
There are many myths surrounding the reason for the cone shaped
roofs on “trulli”. A nice theory is that it was a form of contribution
escape. By pulling on a rope attached to the “trullo”, the owner could
pull the building down when the contribution collector was imminent
and reassemble it, once he had left.

The house by the seaside
The inhabitants of Fasano are used to go away from the city during the
summer, on the hills or by the sea.
A lot of modern houses and villas springle the coast.
They are white and with a roof garden because of the climate.

The apartment
Today the most part of
Fasano inhabitants live
in flats.
The most common is
the apartment building.
Each
building
is
composed
of
6-8
apartments of 80-120
square metres.

Villa in the suburbs
Today the new trends
push the inhabitants of
Fasano to live far from
the city centre, in the
countryside or in the
hamlets around Fasano.

RESULTS
The group enriched its knowledges
about the historic events that brought to
build particular houses with certain
charateristics in style, shape, colour.
 The group got aware about the
differences of dwellings today and the
reasons of such differences (economic,
social, working, traditional…).

Assessment of the degree of
adaptability to other contexts
At school, it is an useful method to
increase motivation among students.
 In working groups, it is an interesting
method to compare the most important
differences noticed
 Individually, it consitutes a method to
understand and study things we don’t
know.

This activity was
arranged in
advance: we cut out
images of furnitures
from newspapers and
magazines: objects,
sofas, chairs, beds,
gardens, kitchens,
tables, of different
colours and styles.

MAKING UP POSTERS
At the beginning of the
activity each person had
an empty poster , glue,
scissors. He had to
choose from the pile of
images the ones that
best represented its taste
about the way of
furnishing his own ideal
house.

“Grundtvig partnership 2011-1-BE2-GRU06-01709-6”
EXCHANGE OF EXPERIENCES
After making posters, each participants
said the reasons of their choices.
They had the possibility to confront
each other, expressing their opinions
about tastes and accepting other
possible ways to furnish a house.

RESULTS
In general, the ways of furnishing one’s house depend on the
experiences and life of each person. Infact all spaces, objects,
colours, reflect the personality of the persons who live there.
10-20 YEARS:
very modern style, bright and mixed colours.
Simple houses and refined details
21-30 YEARS:
modern and affected furniture with a lot of accessories.
Decorated and well groomed gardens and porches
31-50 YEARS:
modern but sober style with light colours.
Big spaces to play hosts, stay together with friends.

ASSESSMENT OF THE DEGREE OF
ADAPTABILITY TO OTHER CONTEXTS
The method used in this workshop can have
different contexts of application. Infact,
searching material, creating posters,
exchanging ideas, are useful tools to
understand, study and discuss about different
topics at school or in similar groups.
The pictures selected have some meaning for
students and reflect an idea of reality. They
represent a situation they can identify
themselves with.

RESULTS OBTAINED FROM THE
AUTONARRATION WORKSHOP
After the discussion, for all the members of the big group agree that:
 “house” is synonym of “family”;
 all participants agree in living their own house as a favourite place after the
daily works and affairs;
 it is a shelter where all are able to get rid off the anxieties and the stress of
daily life
 it is a place where they can dedicate to hobbies or to the contact with
family.
Differences within the group are linked to the place where they spend their
time:
 for young people it is one’s bedroom where they usually shelter to see Tv, to
read, to send messages, to use computer.
 for the adults (both groups) kitchen as meeting place, and the studying room
and the verandah to practice hobbies
 for the adults objects are linked to the souvenir of some important event of
members of family, children, sisters, brothers, that arouse particular emotions.
 the group 40-49 years add the living room as an important place to receive
and stay with friends.

At the end of workshop the learners of the various age groups involved
have learnt some important aspects about the “living places” of the
other groups.
The different age groups have transmitted informations and feelings
about this particular style of life and they have learnt to compare
themselves, to respect other persons, and to appreciate different ways
of living places.
Everyone felt free to express one’s emotions, one’s feelings in a
welcoming atmosphere, without any fear of prejudices nor criticisms.

ASSESSMENT OF THE DEGREE
OF ADAPTABILITY TO OTHER CONTEXTS
The activity of autonarration can be adapted to
other contexts where one deals with groups:
parents associations, parish groups, sport groups,
school groups.
This method helps the members of a group to know
each other, to socialize and form a single entity,
especially when members come from different
contexts.
