The water Route
In the middle of the River Tagus, the enigmatic Almourol Castle is
one of the most emblematic monuments of the Christian
reconquest.
Situated on an island in
the middle of the River
Tagus, Almourol is one
of the most distinctive
castles in Portugal,
because of its historical
significance
and
surrounding landscape.
Its history reminds us of the Reconquest of the Portuguese territory
during the Middle Ages.
When the Christians
arrived here in 1129,
the castle already
existed under the name
of Almorolan, having
been
incorporated
immediately afterwards
into the land that was
placed under the
protection of the
Knights Templar, whose
Master at that time was Gualdim Pais. According to an inscription
at the entrance to the castle, its reconstruction work began in
1171.
Together with the castles of Tomar, Zêzere
and Cardiga, it formed
part of the defensive
line of fortifications
along the River Tagus.
After the Order of the
Knights Templar was
disbanded and the need
to defend the territory
no longer existed, the
castle lay abandoned and forgotten until it was espoused by the
prevailing Romantic spirit of the 19th century and restored to its
present-day appearance.
Constancia is a nice town
located in the centre of the
country, between the beautiful
rivers Tagus and Zêzere, a kind
of peninsula, often dubbed the
"Vila Poema" for having been the
place of residence of the great
Portuguese poet, Luís Camões,
where he would have inspired.
Constancia stands proudly in
white dressing up the slope, with the purity of rivers at their feet. In the
narrow streets of white washed breathes history, enlivened by flowers,
colours and peace of mind.
Its ancient history is inextricably linked to these two
important rivers that bathe.
Here lived Iberians, Romans,
Visigoths and Moors.
Constancia lived much of
inland waterway transport,
construction and ship repair,
the crossing and fisheries.
Vila de Rei is a Portuguese
village belonging to the
Distr ict of Caste lo
Branco. Here in the hills of
Melriça, lies the geodesic
centre of Portugal, which a
milestone built about 20
meters high, called
"Picoto", thus marking the
centre in terms of
geodetic coordinates.
In remote times and according to the oldest traces that exist in the
area of the country, have been the Celts and then the Romans the
first inhabitants.
However because it is a very
old geological area, you can
find, frequently, fossils and
other prehistoric remains.
After the construction of the
dam of Castelo do Bode a
significant part of the area
was submerged.
Her reality has changed with
the arrival of the railway
the road transport in the
XIX century and the
construction of the Castelo
Bode dam, that surrounds
it turning increasingly to
tourist
Industry.
Its rich heritage has
monuments such as the
Church of Our Lady of
Martyrs, with a ceiling
painted by José Malhoa,
where you can see an idyllic scene.
Many
others
such as
Church of Mercy of the
seventeenth century, the
churches of St. Anthony and
St. Julian, the Pelourinho
village, the Camões Memory
House, where the Poet as
lived between 1547 and
1550.
Dornes is a small village of Ferreira do Zêzere located on a small
peninsula in front the Zêzere river in a “albufeira” of Castelo Bode
dam. It is one of the most
beautiful villages in the
center of Portugal, both
for its location, the it’s
views
and
the
picturesque houses, as
the
legends
and
traditions associated with
to it.
An ancient village,
previous
of
the
foundation of the nation, as evidenced by the monuments and
archaeological remains
found here.
Evident between low
and predominantly white
houses is Dornes Tower, a
pentagonal building,
believed to have been
built by the Knights
Templar to guard the deep
Zêzere valley.
