We provide a Healthy Living experience for kids by educating on healthy foods choices and the right balance of physical activity. FLAG FOOTBALL Participants will be bussed from drop-off sites to summer sports locations. Specific sites are TBD, visit ymcatwincities.org for most updated information. One time, non-refundable deposit of $50 per week per child includes a program T-shirt and will be applied to the weekly fee. Weekly fee includes all field trip admissions and program supplies. Our focus is on teamwork, sportsmanship and learning the game without contact or tackling. SOCCER Entering grades K – 6 in fall, 2016 Weeks of June 27, August 15 and August 29 Member Participants: $195/week Non-Member Program Participants: $220/week Kids learn the basic skills and techniques of soccer and improve on those skills as they learn to play every position. Our staff works through a curriculum with kids on ball-control, passing, trapping, shooting and defense. Participants have the option of bringing their own shin guards and plastic cleats. VOLLEYBALL Entering grades K – 6 in fall, 2016 Weeks of July 5* and August 22 *No session July 4 Member Participants: $195/week Non-Member Program Participants: $220/week Kids learn about the sport of volleyball including: rules, communication skills, serving, setting and bumping. Players work through a progression of skills while learning the importance of team work. TENNIS Entering grades K – 6 in fall, 2016 Weeks of July 11 and July 25 Member Participants: $195/week Non-Member Program Participants: $220/week Kids will develop and improve their tennis techniques and skills: forehand, backhand, serving, anticipating the ball and play strategies. They’ll play a set or two as they learn the rules and unique scoring. Participants are encouraged to bring their own racquet. Tennis balls are provided. The Y’s certified instructors use a nationally recognized learn to swim curriculum. GOLF Entering grades K – 6 in fall, 2016 Weeks of June 27 and August 1 Member Participants: $195/week Non-Member Program Participants: $220/week Participants learn about proper grips, stances and alignment for setting up a great shot. We will practice on a local golf course where young golfers will have an opportunity to work with golf course staff to improve their driving, chipping and putting. Bring your own golf clubs; but clubs are available if needed. Bussing provided from summer sports site. Backwards Day, Kookie Hair Day, Wackedout Relays. Who knows what’ll happen during this wild and wacky week? July 25 – 29 Support Your Sport Root for your team! Show your team spirit and sportsmanship through sports-related activities and some pretty awesome field trips. June 20 – 24 This Place is a Zoo Walk on the wild side while you learn about the animals around us. Art projects, games and field trips make the week so much fun! August 1 – 5 Stupendous STEM Fire up your summer with a bit of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)! This week is filled with building, imagination activities, field trips and testing. June 27 – July 1 Just Add Water Our regular camp games get a wet twist! We’ll play games like Sponge Tag, Water Balloon Volleyball, Water Hose Limbo, take field trips and have fun with Noodle Sprinklers in the pool. July 5 – July 8 Pay It Forward Make a difference and have a load of fun, too! This week is filled with having skill-building fun while helping others. Field trips and guest speakers help us help others. July 11 – 15 Minnesota Madness Find out what makes the great state of Minnesota so GREAT! Field trips help us discover our impressive state. July 18 – 22 Walk on the Wild Side Create your own adventure – let your imagination run wild! Arts and Crafts, Drama, Music, field trips and more fill this exciting week. August 8 – 12 Water Palooza! Splish-splash – the water’s calling! Pack your suits, towels and goggles for a wet week filled with water games and field trips. This fun-filled week is for the adventurous camper as we get involved with nature projects, outdoor activities and field trips. The weekly swim lessons occur during regularly scheduled Summer Power swim days, at open swim time over seven weeks. Swimming lessons are 30 minutes for ages 3-5 and 40 minutes for ages 6+. Swim students still get over an hour of free swim time! Small class sizes ensure student-centered swim instruction. YMCA certified instructors use a nationally recognized learn-to-swim curriculum. Dan OBrien 11 SPECIALTY CAMPS OUTDOOR SPORTS SPECIALTY CAMPS PROGRAM INTRODUCTION OUTDOOR GAMES CAMP Develop a greater passion for the things you love, or try out something new at one of our specialty camps! At each of our specialty camps, day campers spend approximately two hours each day in their specialized activity. The remainder of the day is spent enjoying traditional camp activities. Entering grades 1 – 3 in fall, 2016 Member Participants: $185/week Non-Member Program Participants: $210/week Weeks of June 27, July 25 and August 22 Game on! It’s all fun and games as campers learn to play a variety of outdoor games with a “camp twist”. This camp keeps kids active and learning about lifetime games. Campers learn to play Kickball, Volleyball, Disc Golf, Gaga Ball and new camp games. This camp is a safe, fun, non-competitive program designed to build leadership skills and self-esteem through team work. A special field trip is planned each week. CYCLE ADVENTURES BIKE CAMP Entering grades 3 – 5 in fall, 2016 Member Participants: $185/week Non-Member Program Participants: $210/week Weeks of June 20, July 11 and August 8 Take the outdoors on with two wheels! In this fun camp, kids explore the Rice Creek Chain of Lakes on safe and fun bike paths. Kids also learn the basic parts of a bike and how to maintain it. We will use popular bike and city maps to navigate the wonderful trails using the best safety practices. Campers also plan an all-day bike trip. Campers must bring a bike and helmet. Bikes will be transported by a bus trailer and locked up at camp M – F. CLIMBING CAMP Entering grades 4 – 6 in fall, 2016 Member Participants: $190/week Non-Member Program Participants: $215/week Weeks of June 13, June 27, July 18, August 1 and August 15 Campers embark on a climbing adventure! Campers will gain new skills and self-confidence every day through a variety of climbing activities. Campers strike out on an adventure as they test their strength, strategy, and skill against our climbing tower. During these sessions, climbers learn safety procedures, belay techniques, knot tying and proper climbing techniques. This camp will feature a field trip. At each YMCA Specialty Camp, day campers spend approximately two hours of each day in their specialized activity. The remainder of the day is spent enjoying Traditional Camp activities. FISHING CAMP ARCHERY AND SLINGSHOT CAMP Entering grades 4 – 6 in fall, 2016 Member Participants: $185/week Non-Member Program Participants: $210/week Weeks of June 13, July 5*, July 25 and August 15 *No session July 4 Don’t let this camp be “the one that got away”! The Rice Creek Chain of Lakes provides the scene for shoreline fishing fun. Campers learn the basics of fishing techniques through the catch and release method. With some luck, kids will bring home pictures of their “trophies.” Fishing poles, tackle and bait are provided but campers may bring their own pole if they wish. This camp features a special guided trip on a voyageur canoe provided by the Wargo Nature Center. Entering grades 4 – 6 in fall, 2016 Member Participants: $185/week Non-Member Program Participants: $210/week Weeks of June 20, July 11, July 25, August 8 and August 22 While learning the fundamentals of archery, campers examine equipment close up, identify the parts of the bow and arrow and learn the science behind drawing the bow and releasing the arrow. Instructors teach proper grip, stance, and aim alignment. Campers will discover their ‘eye dominance,’ the first step in becoming a skilled archer. This camp will feature a field trip to Bwana Archery. Archery Camp uses more advanced equipment such as Genesis Bows. Equipment is provided. CANOEING CAMP Entering grades 4 – 6 in fall, 2016 Member Participants: $185/week Non-Member Program Participants: $210/week Weeks of June 20, July 18 and August 8 Campers learn paddling skills and canoe safety as they experience the challenge of navigating the local lakes! Kids learn to identify the parts of the canoe, paddling techniques and the importance of teamwork. A daylong adventure through the Rice Creek Chain of Lakes will test the skills they’ve been working on all week. This camp features a special guided trip on a voyageur canoe provided by the Wargo Nature Center.
