Executive Director’s Comments
The Upcoming Alcohol Vote
As most of you have probably heard by now, Berea residents will have an opportunity to vote on Tuesday, September 29th to decide if Berea stays dry or
approves a moist approach allowing restaurants that seat 50 or more patrons
to serve beer and wine with their food.
Proponents of the moist vote believe alcohol is the key to our community’s future retail development and will also expand revenue from tourism locally, while
those opposed to alcohol believe that the moist vote is just part of the process
of accepting alcohol sales and eventually approving the sale of alcohol through
package stores in our community.
Gold (Corporate) Partners of the
Berea Chamber of Commerce
Much like abortion and fairness, this topic tends to be an extremely divisive
issue, within our Chamber Board of Directors, our community, civic organizations, households and families. I know that our Chamber Board of Directors
have addressed the topic annually as part of our Board Retreat and we often
agree to disagree on the issue and focus more on educating our members on
the subject. Sadly many of our Chamber members and small business owners
live outside the city limits and will not be allowed to weigh in on the issue on
September 29th.
Regardless of your believes, I challenge each registered voter to take a few
minutes and vote in the Conkin Gymnasium at Berea Community School on
September 29th. In this modern day and age, it is not acceptable for 10 to
15% or the registered voters to decide important issues like this for our community. It would be much easier for our residents to accept and support the
outcome of this election, if 90% or more of the registered voters took time to
exercise their right to VOTE!
Please make time to vote on September 29th if you are a registered voter living
in the city limits of Berea!

My
Chamber
Story
Meet Sune Frederiksen
I became a member of Berea Chamber of Commerce around 2006 when
I acquired Main Street Café on College Square and later opened Berea
Center for the Arts in the old movie theater on Chestnut Street. However, the first time I was involved with a Chamber activity was back in
1997 when I had a booth at one of the first Spoonbread Festivals.
Since I came to town in 1995, I have made a strong effort to be a part of
the community’s cultural scene, business life and youth sport leadership,
which includes gymnastics and soccer. The main reason for me to join
the Chamber was to network and to support local retail to the best of my
ability.
The Chamber has definitely expanded my horizon in Berea, and due to
this membership and being a small business owner, I have learned much
from this complex group of individuals, representatives of industries and
financial institutions, educational institutions, political leaders, and various non-profit organizations, which represent as many opinions as there
are members.
The Chamber offers numerous opportunities to become involved in various committees, e.g. economic development and special events. I enjoy
receiving the monthly newsletter, which keeps me informed about various activities. I consider it an advantage to
have an active chamber in a town like Berea, a chamber with a positive vision and willingness to play a role in the
future development of the town. With the multi-facetted configuration of this chamber it may be difficult to reach a
consensus each time, but a part of the democratic process is to be willing to learn from others and stay on good
terms.
I have enjoyed conversations with “the good ol’ boys”, who grew up in town, and with new entrepreneurs and educators, who bring new visions and leadership ideas to the table. The trick is find a common platform with the city
leaders, Berea College and others and see Berea prosper.
For the betterment of Berea,
Sune Frederiksen
