An event so significant it completely changed the course of English history – and today the Battle of Hastings is probably the one date in history that every adult and child can recall. Following the battle, between the years 1070 and 1094, William the Conqueror built Battle Abbey – a penance ordered by the Pope for the loss of life incurred in the conflict. The town subsequently grew up beyond the abbey walls to become the thriving community you see today. 1066 Battle of Hastings, Abbey and Battlefield is the best place in the UK to learn about the Norman invasion of England and downfall of the Saxon king Harold at the historic battle of 1066. If you haven’t already been, then take time to explore the historic abbey and battlefield and lift the lid on the story of England. Visit the interactive exhibitions and take the audio tour of the battlefield and abbey ruins, provoking thought and discussion on these nation changing events. Towards the northern end of the High Street, the Medieval Almonry and its Gardens, originally built in 1090, is now home to the Town Council and the Battle Museum of Local History, where you will find all manner of artefacts, including the only battleaxe to be discovered from the battlefield. 4 As the town grew, the Church of St Mary the Virgin was built and it stands to this day to the east of the abbey gates. Here you will discover a Romanesque nave, a Norman font, rare 14th century wall paintings and the gilded alabaster tomb of Sir Anthony Browne who was granted the Abbey by Henry VIII. If Battle’s famous origins were not enough, did you know that more recently, in the 17th century, the town was the centre of the gunpowder industry? It is likely that the gunpowder, which Guy Fawkes hoped to use, came from this area and the Battel Bonfire Boyes celebrate the gunpowder plot each November with a spectacular fireworks display. No visit would be complete until you have experienced the sights, smells and sounds of a bygone age at Yesterday’s World. Discover 125 years of British social history with life size street scenes and shop displays plus over 150,000 nostalgic artefacts, this is an experience not to be missed! Today Battle is a bustling town, heaving with independent, artisan shops; award-winning restaurants; galleries exhibiting both world-leading and local artists, and great country pubs. With good reason, Battle is hailed a “top-ten hidden gem of Europe” by Lonely Planet and the town and surrounding countryside offers a variety of quality places to stay ranging from hotels and award-winning B&Bs to camp sites, pine lodges and eco friendly huts. www.visit1066country.com/battle 5 ton Roa d London (A21) th Ne Hill eld Lane Stre et W Virgin ’s Rye (A21) ha tlin g A2100 fi er Netherfield Brightling Heathfield (B2096) Sedlescombe (A21) unt Trade Road North Mo K gh Hi Lewes Eastbourne Brighton (A259/A27) K i Up Battle is a town of significant historic importance, the home of the Battle of Hastings, 1066 and the birthplace of modern England. The thriving market town of Battle is home to the very spot where King Harold fell during the fateful conflict with Pevensey being the actual landing point for both the Romans and Normans. Along the coast the Edwardian seaside resort of Bexhill-on-Sea is the home of the De La Warr Pavilion and Europe’s largest beach-launched fishing fleet can be seen in Hastings & St Leonards, where you can also enjoy the picturesque Old Town. Famous for its pretty cobbled streets, Rye is also a maritime maze of Medieval and Georgian buildings, with the dunes of Camber Sands just down the road. Inland don’t miss fairytale Bodiam Castle, set in the middle of glorious countryside not far from Battle, with its backdrop of vineyards and the Kent & East Sussex Railway. The quiet village of Burwash hosts Rudyard Kipling’s house ‘Bateman’s’, and Herstmonceux is the perfect place for visitors to lose themselves in the glorious gardens of Herstmonceux Castle. www.visit1066country.com/battle 9 Regular Events So Very Battle! The good people of Battle will dress up at the drop of a hat so do try to tie in a visit with one of the quirkier annual events. Check out the annual Marbles Match in April, the Medieval Fayre in the shadow of Battle Abbey in May, the Scarecrow Festival throughout the town in July, and the major re-enactment of the Battle of Hastings in October. Torchlight processions, chain mail, fireworks and fancy dress are de-rigour! Arts & Culture October’s Battle Arts & Music Festival will be bigger and better than ever in 2015, with performances by internationally renowned musicians, visual arts exhibitions, and the buzzing Battle Fringe in the town’s bars and restaurants. The festival will coincide with Pure Arts Group’s annual art fair, and Saffron Gallery on the High Street will host no less than 10 visual arts exhibitions during the course of the year. With three permanent galleries plus dedicated exhibition spaces and its own annual art fair, Battle truly holds its own against larger towns and cities. Old Regulars Oldies and goodies include Every Last Friday (ELF), a unique live entertainment experience in many locations around Battle. Just choose a venue and the performers will come to you in 20 minute sessions on the last Friday of the month. Add to the mix the seasonal Flower Shows at Battle Memorial Hall in March, July, September; occasional theatre and monthly cinema evenings, again at the Memorial Halls; and Battle Farmers Market on the third Saturday of every month. And keep an eye on the town’s websites for ad-hoc walking tours and regular events at Battle Museum, Battle Abbey and Yesterday’s World, and even an international meet-up of Keane fans in August. All told, Battle truly is a year-round destination where there’s always something to do and see. 10 1066 Battle of Hastings 950th Anniversary 14 October 2016 marks the 950th anniversary of the 1066 Battle of Hastings.
