With the poster that he created for Annecy 2014, Franck Dion
tastefully assigned the theme of the Capricorn to the
Festival, alluding to a space between water and mountains.
By intentionally placing arms that animate the animal in a
discrete, yet effective manner, he also placed stop-motion at
the heart of our event. An impressive programme comprised
of 16 screenings will be the perfect opportunity to dive headfirst into the history of this technical movement.
2014 is also the year of commemoration: the 100th anniversary
of Norman McLaren’s birth and the centennial of the beginning
of World War I. For McLaren, we will celebrate the occasion by
screening films that acknowledge his legacy and by holding
an exhibition and a cine-concert at the Château d’Annecy. As
for WWI, its remembrance will be honoured by two screenings
featuring some never-before-seen footage. In addition, at
the crossroads of the programmes dedicated to stop-motion
animation and to World War I, Stéphan Oliva and Jean-Marc
Foltz will hold a cine-concert around films by pioneer Segundo
de Chomón which will be without a doubt one of the big
moments in the week.
Annecy 2014 is full of visits from lots of big names: Isao
Takahata, Bill Damaschke, Dean DeBlois, Pete Docter, Carlos
Saldanha and many more. And finally, the Festival is providing
numerous innovations, including ticketing, audience award
voting and film programmes all online, a new competitive
section "Animation Off-Limits", special prizes awarded starting
Friday night. An enticing menu for all tastes!

STOP MOTION
SPECIAL
PROGRAMMES
The Essentials, a
programme of eight mustsee stop-motion short films
such as Jan Svankmajer’s
Dimensions of Dialogue, Tim
Burton’s Vincent and Nick
Park’s Creature Comforts.
For this year’s event, the Festival will be putting the
spotlight on stop-motion animation. Make way for
puppets and clay! Thanks to a few thousand frames
and a great deal of patience, photographed objects
and figurines will come to life and animate the screen
for the duration of a film.

THE 2014 COMPETITION IN A FEW WORDS...
After more than 350 hours of viewing 2,294 films submitted from 88 different countries, Artistic
Director Marcel Jean and the Films & Programme Planning team kept 230 films to be screened
during the Festival.
THE PROGRAMME
COMPETITION
∙ For the short films, the competition is made up of 43 films
coming from 23 countries.
Great Britain is back with a bang this year and is one of the 3
countries leading the selection with France and Canada, followed
by Japan and the USA. Latvia, Mexico and Slovakia are also in the
running. Over a third of the films were directed or co-directed by
women (16 out of 43, or 37%).
∙ Annecy is introducing a new competitive section this year:
Animation Off-Limits, with 12 short films from 8 different
countries.
∙ 29 works have been selected for the TV films category which
is dominated by French and American productions this year,
although there are also films from Brazil, Columbia, Pakistan and
Ukraine.
For the commissioned films, 36 works from 11 countries will be
presented.
∙ 56 graduation films have been selected, and over 40% of them
were directed by women. British schools especially stand out
this year with 12 films in the running, 5 of which were created by
students of the Royal College of Arts!
∙ Finally, for the feature films, 9 will be in competition (details on
pages 12-14).

Keeping up the Festival
tradition of the past 10 years,
Marcel Jean will greet the
directors of short films in
competition every morning, the
day after their film has been
screened.
This will be the opportunity to
exchange ideas with the pros
who will give the audience
a "backstage pass" to their
film: obstacles, stories, music,
techniques, etc.
The Shorts & Breakfast will
take place at the Festival bar
next to the haras, the perfect
setting to start your day off right.

68 feature films were subjected to the scrutiny of Marcel Jean and his team: 9 of them were
selected for competition and 9 others for out of competition. This year, there is a strong presence
of Brazilian animation (with 1 film in competition and 2 out of competition) and hybrid productions
that walk the line between animation and live action.

PRESS CONFERENCES
The feature films in competition press conferences will be
moments of discovery and bonding.
Conducted by film journalists, these conferences will give the
press the opportunity to discover the artistic directions, graphic
or technical choices and methods of production and distribution
of the features selected for competition, in the presence of the
film crew, of course.
These press conferences will be held after the first screening of
the feature and will take place on the haras grounds.

THEY’RE HERE IN ANNECY!
"THE TALE OF THE PRINCESS KAGUYA" - THE LATEST MASTERPIECE FROM STUDIO GHIBLI
To kick off the 2014 event, Annecy has the honour of welcoming
one of the greatest names in Japanese animation: Isao Takahata.
His latest film, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, will be screened in
his presence during the opening ceremony.
This feature film is an adaptation of a founding text in Japanese
literature that tells the story of a tiny princess, Kaguya, "the
shining princess", who is found in a bamboo stalk. She quickly
turns into a beautiful young woman, who is coveted by the greatest
princes ready to face impossible challenges to win her hand.
For this film, Isao Takahata used a particular artistic look
where the characters are drawn in charcoal and move about in
watercolour backdrops.

"INSIDE OUT" - A FIRST GLIMPSE AT THE DISNEY-PIXAR FILM

take a sneak peek into this wildly original idea. Inside Out takes audiences to the most extraordinary

an Oscar), Walt Disney Animation Studios is happy to present Feast, their newest short film, for its
exclusive world premiere during the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
About Feast
Feast, the first short film directed by Patrick Osborne (head of animation on Paperman), is the story
of a man’s love life as seen through the eyes of his best friend and dog, Winston, and revealed bite by
bite through the meals they share.

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2
The second exciting chapter of the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy
takes us back into the fantasy world of Hiccup and Toothless.
It’s been five years since Hiccup and Toothless united the dragons
and Vikings on the island of Berk. Their new adventure takes us
to the discovery of a secret cave that is home to hundreds of wild
dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider. The now inseparable
pair will unite again in order to save the lives of men and dragons.
Directed by Dean DeBlois, a DreamWorks Animation film, distributed
by 20th Century Fox. France release date: 2nd July 2014.

This programme, dedicated

victims of this war.
PIERRE HÉBERT: ON "PLACES AND
MONUMENTS"
An independent artist making films in the wake of Norman McLaren,
Pierre Hébert is involved in multiple artistic areas. The Festival
has chosen to pay tribute to him by devoting a programme focusing
on his project Places and Monuments. Another programme will also
be online.

Internationalisation, more meetings offered and a higher
presence of global partners and decision makers are some
of Mifa 2014’s promises.
With the presence of over 60 countries, the Market’s focus
is on sharing and exchanging ideas and serving as a bridge,
uniting Europe and the rest of the world. It also reflects new
creative and production areas that demonstrate the sector’s
vitality and the public’s appetite for this genre.
The best example of this is South America and the increase in
participation of its companies whose impact on the industry
will be instrumental over the coming years. In particular,
this increased presence will result in the organisation of the
first and very promising Latin America Territory Focus, and

been repositioned around 3 main themes: Creation, Business
and Production Organisation conferences. We will therefore be
in a position to offer professionals an overview on current and
