F
or people 62 and older, there
are more options available than
simply worrying about paying a
mortgage, managing debts, and
hoping to live comfortably in your
own home. A reverse mortgage
allows you to convert the equity
in your home to cash for living
expenses, home improvements, inhome health care, or anything you
choose.
What if I don’t qualify?
Reverse mortgages are for
people 62 years or older who own
their own homes either outright or
have a loan to pay off. Qualifying
requirements to qualify.
Take a close look
Instead of you making monthly
payments to the lender, they
make monthly payments to you!
With a reverse mortgage, older
homeowners can stay in their
homes and maintain their standard
of living without taking on a
monthly mortgage payment and
without becoming a burden for
others.
There are costs involved in getting
a reverse mortgage, working with
the right company can help reduce
and even eliminate much of that
cost.
How do I get the money?
Typically, you have the option of
receiving the proceeds in the form
of a lump-sum payment, fixed
monthly payments for life, or a line
of credit.
It’s Who you know...
Huge companies have marketing
budgets that overwhelm you with
carefully worded ads. Finding a
trusted experienced team with a
solid reputation, is the best way to
choose your own future.
Do I pay anything?
You continue to pay property
taxes and homeowner’s insurance.

Forever Young With Your Heart & Mind
~Dr. Keerthy Sunder, MD
As a Board Certified Psychiatrist and Medical Researcher, years
of observing patients with mental decline and the anxiety it can
bring, have shaped my view of how therapy should be approached.
Prescription Medications that slow the decline of memory are an
integral part of treatment but there is a need for approaches that
enhance memory improvement and effectively address anxiety and
stress. The desire to help the geriatric population with cutting edge
therapies and comprehensive care, culminated in Mind & Body
Treatment and Research Institute, an exciting new Integrated Psychiatry and Wellness Practice, based in Riverside California.
Holistic psychiatry embraces the integration of Science, Tradition and
Compassion. No memory enhancement regimen would be complete
without an aptly named “mindfulness” component consisting of
Meditation and Yoga as well as Brain targeted Nutritional supplementation. We also integrated innovative new technologies like
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and Neurofeedback.
Neurofeedback is ideal for seniors striving for sharpened cognitive
faculties and continued personal excellence. Helping the community with their memory problems through neurofeedback has been
a vastly rewarding experience. This technology has been growing
by leaps and bounds for more than 40 years and is now robust
enough to show improvement in several domains as evidenced by
double-blind studies. Cognitive performance and brain activity have
been shown to increase in the elderly after applying neurofeedback.
In a colloquial sense the treatment gives the brain a mirror, a chance
to observe itself and make its own corrections. It is wonderful to
know that our mind has the capacity for improvement even as we
age but the best part is that it does not come with a laundry list of
side effects.
A voluminous amount of scientific research currently validates the
untapped power and efficacy of holistic, wellness-driven patient
care. It’s time for a paradigm shift in Psychiatry that champions
ingenuity and active Patient/Physician collaboration. The Mind &
Body Treatment and Research Institute is excited in offering a completely unique and immersive “Mind Spa” experience where patients
embark on a groundbreaking, restorative journey towards a sound
mind and body.

Adjusting to life with your new
Full or Partial Dentures
You’ve just
been told you
need dentures
and, like most
people in your
position, you’re unsure and probably
nervous about what to expect. Change
is never easy, especially when it involves something as personal as your
mouth.
If you’re like most people, you
place a lot of importance on your
smile because you believe it is the
first thing that people notice about
you. Your fears are not uncommon
and many of the patients we see
who need dentures express the same
concerns. To assist you through this
process, we’ve developed a few tips to
help you adjust to your new life with
dentures. First, know that you’re not
alone. Many denture wearers are missing multiple teeth and have a full or
partial denture, which means someone
you know may be going through the
same transition as you and may
not even be aware. That’s because
dentures aren’t as noticeable as you
may think. Dentures can be made to
closely resemble the look of your natural teeth so there is little change in appearance. When you first start wearing
dentures, you may find pronouncing
certain words may require practice,
but reading out loud and repeating
troublesome words helps.
If you notice your dentures “click”
while you’re talking, speak slower.
Your new dentures may feel awkward
for a few weeks until you get used
to them. The dentures may also feel
loose while
the muscles
of your cheek
and tongue
learn to keep
them in place. This feeling will fade as
your mouth becomes accustomed to
your new dentures. However, during
this time, you may want to consider
using a small amount of denture
adhesive to help keep your dentures
in place.
After the healing process is complete, you can consult your dentist for
implant-supported denture.
It is a type of overdenture that is
supported by and attached to implants. A regular denture rests on
the gums, and is not supported by
implants.
An implant-supported denture is
used when a person doesn’t have any
teeth in the jaw, but has enough bone
in the jaw to support implants. An
implant-supported denture has special
attachments that snap onto attachments on the implants.
Implant-supported dentures usually are made for the lower jaw because
regular dentures tend to be less stable
there. Usually, a regular denture made
to fit an upper jaw is quite stable on its
own and doesn’t need the extra support offered by implants. However,
you can receive an implant-supported
denture in either the upper or lower
jaw.

id you remember to take
your medication today?
If the answer is no, you’re
not alone. People all over
the country make the same
mistake every single day.
Research shows more than
50 percent of prescription
medication users fail to take
their medications when they
are supposed to. And if you’re
taking more than one type
of medication, it gets even
harder to remember.
“The entire system puts
so much burden on the
individual,” says TJ Parker,
co-founder of PillPack, a fullservice, online pharmacy.
“They’re not only stressed
about their condition but
are also keeping track of
multiple refills, calling their
doctors, coordinating with
their insurance companies,
constantly having to
remember to take their pills
- it’s a lot for anyone to have
to manage. And then their

chronic condition isn’t just a
life hurdle, it’s all-consuming.”
Nothing is more important
than your health and that
means you can’t afford to miss
a dose. To help you overcome
your lapses and stick to the
schedule, here are five tips
to make your medication an
effective, not forgotten, part of
your day.
Have your medication
delivered. Eliminate the
weekly or bi-weekly trips
to the pharmacy and have
your medications shipped
directly to you, even while
you travel. There are many
online, mail-order and local
pharmacies that offer delivery
service. Make sure to choose
a pharmacy that offers free

you’ll remember when to
take your pills. If you have a
smartphone, an even better
option is to download a
medication reminder app for
your phone that synchronizes
with your medications and
keeps track of the meds
you’ve taken and the meds
you’ve forgotten.
Utilize your pharmacist.
Your pharmacist is
your most knowledgeable
resource when it comes
to understanding your
medication. They understand
not only how your medication
works, but how it will interact
with other medications
or anything else you may
consume, such as alcohol.
If you have a question
about your medication your
pharmacist is available to
help, especially with many
pharmacy services being
available 24/7.

delivery and will overnight
your medications when
needed.
Pre-sort your medications.
Organize your medications
by the date and time you take
them. Your pharmacy can do
this for you with individual
dose packets. Presorting
your medications will make
it easier to establish a
dependable schedule and get
you in the habit of taking your
medications on time.
Make sure you don’t run
out of your medication.
To avoid missing a dose,
you can keep track of your
medications yourself or
you can turn to a pharmacy
for help. Some pharmacies,
like PillPack, will contact
your prescriber eight weeks
before your last refill and
take the necessary steps to
get your new prescription
in place, including working
with your doctor and
insurance company to obtain
authorization so you have
everything you need.

Hearing Loss Tied to Dementia

people with cognitive decline
(a reduction in functions like
memory, language and information processing) also often
had hearing loss. But recent
research has provided solid
data showing that people with
hearing loss are actually more

those with normal hearing. A

olidays are for reuniting
with friends and family.
These are times full of love
and joy, but can also be
full of stress. If you have
hearing loss, these large
gatherings can be even more
challenging because hearing
loss occurs more often at
the higher pitches than the
low. Low-pitch sounds like
the car engine, or speech
sounds such as “ah” or “ooh”
can generally be heard
more easily than high-pitch
sounds like bird chirps or
speech sounds such as “s” or
“f.” As a result, people rely
on hearing the low-pitch
sounds in speech in order to
understand the conversation.
People with hearing loss also
rely more on non-verbal cues
to help them fill in the gaps,
including the context of the
conversation, body language,

facial expressions and lipreading.
Unfortunately, in large
gatherings, all the cues those
with hearing loss rely on to
help them understand speech
become compromised. In
these situations, there is
usually a variety of different
background noises, such
as people talking and
laughing, music and cutlery
clanking. Noise generally
tends to be low pitch. In
louder environments, the
background noise can
drown out the remaining
speech sounds those with
hearing loss need in order to
understand the conversation.
There also tend to be
instances where more than
one person is speaking, and
the speaker may not always
be facing the listener.
As a result, those with

speech from noise, and the
hearing aids suppress noise to
enhance the sound quality of
speech. In new smart hearing
aids, these noise reduction
algorithms are completely
automatic and can target a
variety of different sounds,
such as machinery, car and
traffic noise, impulse noises
such as clanging cutlery and
clinking glass, and even wind
noise. They can even work
fast enough to reduce the

hearing loss have to pay
extra close attention.
Unfortunately, they too often
just catch fragments of words
and sentences they have to
piece together. This process
requires so much mental
effort these individuals are
often exhausted after a few
hours of trying to keep up
with the conversation. As
a result, loved ones with
hearing loss tend to become
withdrawn and socially
isolated, and will even leave
the conversation to watch TV
or be on their own.

brief pockets of noise between
natural pauses in words and
sentences. By reducing the
overall noise level, hearing
aids make listening in difficult
situations more comfortable
and less stressful.
Smart hearing aids with
directional microphone
technology also help wearers
hear better in large gatherings
and parties. Instead of picking
up sounds equally from all
around the wearer, modern
hearing aids are able to pick
up sounds primarily from the
front direction. Since you’re
most likely facing the person
you’re talking to, directional
microphones pick up speech
from your conversational
partner while reducing the
noise coming from behind
you. In more advanced hearing
aids, directional microphones
are able to able to activate
automatically in the presence
of noise (i.e., when you join
the party). They also adapt to
various sound environments
to give you the best
performance in these dynamic
listening situations. Most
impressive of all, when some
20 www.californiaseniorguide.com
hearing aids are fit as a pair,
their directional microphones
can communicate and
work together to sharpen
the directional focus even
further, so that sound
(including speech) that is not
immediately in front of you is
reduced. In really challenging
and noisy conditions, such
as crowded restaurants
or cocktail parties, this
technology has been clinically
proven to allow wearers to
understand speech even
better than listeners with
normal hearing.
Use communication
strategies
Advanced hearing
aid technology can help
tremendously, but some
simple strategies can make
communicating in these
situations even easier:
ƒƒ If the location of the event
is within your control, minimize background noise
(e.g., forgo background music or limit it to one area of
the house).
ƒƒ If you have a say in the
restaurant where a gathFor information call (951) 276-2211
ering is taking place, consider one that is relatively
quiet and request a table in
a more secluded area. Consider choosing a time that is
off- peak dining hours.
ƒƒ Remind people to get your
attention first and face you
when speaking. Position
yourself in a well-lit area.
ƒƒ If there are windows, sit
with your back to them so
that the light is on your partner rather than in your eyes.
Being able to see the person you’re talking to clearly
makes it easier to use visual
cues to help you understand
the conversation.
Finally, relax and appreciate
these special times with
your loved ones. Remember,
in these difficult listening
situations, even those with
normal hearing often miss a
few words or phrases. Don’t
get stressed or discouraged
if you don’t understand
everything. Focus on enjoying
the company of your friends
and family, just as they enjoy
yours.

Conservatorships
A conservatorship is a court
proceeding to appoint a manager
for the financial affairs or the
personal care of a person who
is either physically or mentally
unable to handle either or both.
This includes assessing what
level of care an individual might
need by evaluating: Mental and
physical condition and the ability
to perform daily activities of
living. The Public Guardian and
most private conservatorship
agencies strive to find a situation
that maximizes a client’s

Started in Bishop, California in

Symons Ambulance has grown
to include the following divisions: 9-1-1, Interfacility/Critical Care Transport, Event and

Symons is different from
many other ambulance companies because everyone involved in the ownership of
the company is either an EMT,
paramedic, nurse or physician
that actively provides patient
care in the field. Symons Ambulance believes that staying
grounded in the field allows
the company to provide better “whole person” care rather
than focusing primarily on the

Reverse mortgages have been
available since the mid-80’s as a way
to help homeowners, age 62 and
older, convert part of the equity in
their home into lump sum of cash, a
monthly payment, or a line of credit
that can be used during retirement.
It is also a way of financing the
purchase of a new residence for
those homeowners wishing to relocate or down-size. The amount the
homeowner can qualify for is based
on a number of factors: the age of
the youngest homeowner, the lesser
of the appraised value of the home
or the current FHA program lending
limit, and prevailing market interest
rates. The homeowner’s financial
condition is analyzed to determine
their willingness and capacity to
meet all of their financial obligations.
With a reverse mortgage, the
30 www.californiaseniorguide.com
homeowner is not required to make
any monthly mortgage payments
as long as the property is owneroccupied.
The homeowner is
responsible for paying property
taxes, maintaining hazard insurance,
and normal property maintenance.
As long as these conditions are met,
the loan is not payable until the last
homeowner no longer occupies the
property or the home is sold.
The proceeds of the reverse
mortgage can be used for most
anything. Reverse mortgages are
enabling homeowners to improve
their homes, enrich their lives, and
secure their financial future.

Why a Reverse Mortgage

f you are 62 and over, a reverse mortgage is a great
way to get rid of your house
payment and give you a credit
line so you can live your retired
years without worry. Make the
call, you earned it.
A traditional loan requires
monthly payments. A Reverse
Mortgage has no payments.
Plus there is an option of a
growing credit line. One you
can use for any purpose. You
can use it for vacations, paying
for a grandchild’s college, dental work or to pay off bills. The
options are endless. It is important to know all the facts.
Here are few important things
to know about a Reverse Mortgage:
ƒƒ You always retain ownership of your home.
ƒƒ You have no house payment
as long as the last borrower on title is occupying the
home.
32 www.californiaseniorguide.com
ƒƒ You are still responsible for
keeping the property taxes
and home insurance current.
ƒƒ One Homeowner must be

SAN FERNANDO VALLEY’S ONLY
PROGRAM OF ALL-INCLUSIVE CARE FOR THE
ELDERLY (PACE)
T
he Brandman Centers for Senior Care
(BCSC), a Program of All-inclusive Care
for the Elderly (PACE), now offers a wonderful
alternative for frail seniors living in the San
Fernando Valley. This nationally recognized
program is changing and improving the lives
of nursing home-eligible seniors who prefer to
remain in their own homes.
PACE is an innovative Medicare/MediCal program. BCSC-PACE serves seniors who
are: 55yrs or older, live in the BCSC area, are
eligible for a nursing home level-of-care as
determined by California DHCS, and are able to
live safely in the community.
“It is an amazing place to be. I do exercises,
activities… see a doctor and have all the
medical care that is required… in one place,”
says BCSC participant Rosa Ferman.
Rosa was among the first participants to
enroll in the PACE program at BCSC during
its first year of service in 2013. She comes to
the center three times a week in the center’s
own vans and specially trained drivers. On
any given day at the Center, Rosa may have a
conversation with one of the BCSC doctors,
receive physical therapy, lunch and participate
in any number of social activities with other
participants.
BCSC services include: Adult day
healthcare, primary medical & specialty care,
vision, dental, hearing, foot care, medications,
nursing, physical, occupational, and speech
therapy, home care and transportation to and
from the Center and for medical appointments.
Medicare, Medi-Cal and private pay are all
accepted. For more information or to schedule
your own tour of BCSC, call 818-774-8444,

Are there low-cost community

If you are over age 62 and
your income is limited, you
may qualify for an apartment
in an affordable senior housing
community. These housing
communities
are
funded
through the HUD Section
202 program. Under this
program, rent is based on the
participant’s adjusted gross
income, which is calculated by
subtracting approved medical
expenses from income. The
resident pays 30% of their
adjusted gross income for rent.
Use NCOA’s BenefitsCheckUp®
screening tool to see if you
may qualify for affordable

Should I consider a continuing

A CCRC offers all levels
of care at one location so
residents can continue to live
as independently as possible
as their need for help grows.
Active residents live in an

Residents with serious medical

He has been a long time
advocate for issues of homelessness. This was certainly
evident in his 2014 film, Time

is front and center. Gere produced and starred in the movie, playing George Hammond,
a man living on the streets of

Referrals to Community
Resources
Local Red Cross offices develop
and maintain relationships with
key community partners. Veterans and their families rely on the
Red Cross to help them identify
their needs and connect them to
the most appropriate Red Cross

Red Cross service ranges from

for food, clothing, and shelter,
referrals to counseling services

Volunteers, including many veterans and their family members,

who are now cared for each day in

Provides Transportation
Assistance
A
n estimated 172,090
California residents will
learn that they have cancer
this year; for some, getting
to their scheduled treatment
may be a challenge. To help
people get the critical care
they need, the American
Cancer Society provides
a program offering free
transportation to and from
cancer treatment facilities.
“One cancer patient
requiring radiation therapy
could need anywhere from 20
to 30 trips to treatment in six
weeks,” said Jessica Hodgeson,
American Cancer Society
Senior Manager, Mission
Delivery. “A patient receiving
chemotherapy might report
for treatment weekly for up to
a year. In many cases, a patient
is driven to hospitals or clinics
by relatives or friends, but
even these patients must
occasionally seek alternative

transportation. That’s where
the American Cancer Society
Road To Recovery® program
comes in.”
To ensure that all patients
have transportation when
they need it, the Society is
looking for volunteer drivers.
It is a rewarding experience
and is ideal for people who
like one-on-one interaction
and driving. It is a great way
to give back if you are a cancer
survivor or if you have had
a friend or family member
who has had cancer. Road To
Recovery® drivers provide
encouragement and support,
and patients are very thankful
for the help.

and the Road To Recovery
program and other Society
programs and services, call

Having cancer is hard.
Finding a ride to
treatment shouldn’t be.
For many cancer patients, getting to and from treatment
is one of their toughest challenges. The American Cancer
Society needs volunteer drivers to help provide free rides
for people facing cancer in your community.
