At our Annual General Meeting in April we were able to report that
although the requests for our services had fallen slightly we were still
responding the more than two calls per week, the vast majority being for
transport to and from medical appointments,
We are frequently asked how much notice we need for assistance.
While we have always said that we are not an emergency service, when we
receive a call for an appointment a month ahead, it is sometimes difficult
for our colleagues to know what they will be doing so far in advance, so
while 1 days notice is sometimes a bit short about a week to 10 days is
about right.
Even so we will always try to find someone to help even if it is a last
minute request.
Please remember we are only a telephone call away, not just for transport
to health appointments but for all those neighbourly thing: that might be
required.

The circus is coming to town!
The children and staff of St Faiths‘ C of E Primary School are eagerly
awaiting Circus Ferrell pitching their big top on the school field. We will
be learning some circus skills and holding a special assembly inside the big
top with our friends from Hainford and Frettenham Partnership Schools.
Circus Ferrell will be performing two shows on Friday 19th June at 2pm
and Sunday 21st June at 6pm. Everyone in the community is most welcome
to join with us to enjoy the thrills of the circus. Tickets are £5.50 in advance
from the school office or £6 on the gate.
ln other news, the annual May Fair once again was a huge success. The
glorious sunshine drew in the crowds and a lot of fun was had by all. Thank
you everyone who lent a hand or came along to support us.
Also this term the Barn Owls class enjoyed an exciting day back in time on
the Poppy Express. The class travelled to Sheringham station in their 1940s
attire and then prepared to be sent to their new home as evacuees in wartime
Norfolk. The day was fantastic and included many great activities including
making their own ration lunch with spam, make-do and mend and some
window washing! The parents made a great effort with costumes and all the
children looked fantastic. Other curriculum enhancement days this term have
excluded a trip to The Castle Museum- for a Vikings and Dragons workshop
and our older children were lucky enough to visit Harry Potter World as part
of the topic Mythical Creatures in Reading Week. We also welcomed the
acclaimed children’s author David Bedford to school, who entertained the
children with storytelling, writer’s workshops and book signing at the end
of the school day. The week culminated with a special assembly where all
the children came dressed as their favourite book character and brought a
book to swap.
We all look fon/vard to an action packed final half term.

ST FAITHS PARISH CHURCH
OF ST MARY AND ST ANDREW
The Church of England and the Methodist Church
Worshipping & Working Together
Unless you have been on Mars these last few weeks you cannot fail to know
that her majesty Queen Elizabeth 2nd is 90 years old. She turned 90 on 21st
April and a great deal was made of this by our nation and media.
However, whilst I’m sure that there must have been a party on that date
(unfortunately my invitation must have got lost in the post) the nations celebrations are being saved until her ‘official’ birthday which is always on a
Saturday in June.
This year the weekend of the 10th-12th of June is when we are invited to
celebrate our monarch’s 90th birthday. In the church on the Sunday 12th we
shall be commemorating her majesty’s 90th Birthday by reverting to a style
of service that will be very familiar to our Queen and those of her generation, that is we shall be celebrating our usual service of Holy Communion
but we shall be using the order of service from the 1662 Book of Common
Prayer. This style of service already has within its structure prayers for the
monarch so it seemed particularly fitting for the occasion. If you would like
to attend this ‘Blast from the past’ service it begins at 09:30. There will
also be copies of a celebration book published in her majesty’s honour, ‘The
Servant Queen’ available after the service.
Incidentally our All Age Worship the week before (5th again at 09:30) will
also have a royal flavour to it.
Queen Elizabeth 2nd has won respect in this nation and around the world by
the dignified way in which she has conducted herself throughout her reign.
She keeps out of politics and yet has had the ear of 12 Prime Ministers across
the political divide.
11
Her Christian faith whilst generally known is communicated in an honest yet
non-threatening way that has endeared her to people of all faiths and none.
Former Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks said of her,
‘Jews have a deep respect for the Queen and the Royal Family…Something
similar, in my experience, is true of other minority faiths in Britain. They
value the Queen because they know she values them. She makes them feel,
not strangers in a strange land, but respected citizens at home.’ (Bible Society 2016 Page 46)
She does not communicate her faith in a ‘preachy’ way, a style that can put
many off. Rather than preach Christianity she lives Christianity. To put that
in to modern speak, the Queen does not just ‘talk the talk’, she also ‘walks
the walk’.
May she indeed have ‘long to reign over us – God save the Queen!’

Meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday in the
month at the Mission Room and start at 2.00 p.m.
In April we went to Beccles where members did some shopping and we
then went on to The Oaklands Hotel for for a very nice carvery. The
weather stayed fine and a good day was had by all.
In May we visited Springfields where members did some retail therapy
. We then went on to Baytree Nursery where quite a few people bought
some plants. Then we went to the Ffolkes Arms ar Hillington for a lovely
meal arriving home about 7.45 p.m. A very enjoyable day.
In June we shall be going to Bury St Edmunds and in July we shall be going to Cambridge and the Botanical Gardens.
It is so lovely seeing our Club so well attended by its members after nearly
65 years which just goes to show we are doing something right!

One allotment plot at the Waterloo site is vacant. There is currently no
waiting list so if you would like one please contact me.
I have recently been asked to clarify the status of “The Hill” which links
Back Street and Old Norwich Road, particularly with regards to maintenance
of the surface and hedges etc. The Hill is purely a right of way and nothing
more. Any one has the right to walk along it unobstructed but all aspects of
maintenance rest with the adjoining landowners as the actual land belongs
to them.
The Parish Council has been concerned for some time that the surfaces
under the swings in Newton and Horsham parks fall below current safety
expectations and they have been researching various alternatives which
could be met within the Council’s budget. An order is being placed with
Norse to improve the surfaces and the work should be done within the next
few weeks.
At the annual meeting of the Council, Rodney Cushing was re-elected as
chairman with Melanie Rodgers continuing as vice-chairman.
The draft annual accounts for the financial year have been sent to the
auditors. They show an income of £32,164, expenditure of £25,616 and
accrued funds carried forward of £16,455 from which the safety surface
improvements will be funded.

Mandy’s 50th Birthday Challenges
Part one ~ The London Marathon ~ completed.
Yippee ~ I did it. I ran the London Marathon in 3 hours, 56 minutes & 31
seconds. I tried so hard right from the start giving it everything I had. The
atmosphere was amazing & my husband informs me I was on TV as I ran
past the Cutty Sark at 6 miles. I ran fairly comfortably until 11 miles when
I started to get cramp in my calf muscles. I was utterly determined though
to keep running even if it was with a grimace until the pain wore off. At 13
miles I received lovely friendly cheers of encouragement from my friends
before I trotted into the Docklands area of London. I kept on drinking sips
of water to try to keep the cramps at bay & focused on keeping going as
my legs became more & more tired. As I approached the final miles of the
marathon the cramps returned but I thought about all the encouragement I've
received & the animals at Hillside and continued to run as fast as my tired
legs would allow. Turning the corner at Buckingham Palace & seeing the
finish ahead was a wonderful sight & I found a fresh surge of energy as I ran
up the Mall.
After finishing & collecting my baggage a kind lady took my photo for me.
I tried then to make my way to meet my friends but I was not feeling too
good & suddenly severe cramp stopped me in my tracks & I collapsed to
the ground in pain. The medical people were fantastic & rescued me with
a wheelchair. They gave me an electrolyte drink & carefully massaged my
muscles until I could stand again. I slowly began to make my way back to the
accommodation hoping I would not collapse again in the middle of Trafalgar
Square. I cried with relief when three of my running friends spotted me and
helped me back to where we were staying. It was an amazing day and I am
truly grateful to everyone who supported me and sponsored me.
I’m now turning my thoughts to part two of my challenges, the 1,500 mile
cycle ride in the summer via the three peaks. I will be continuing with my
fitness training as well as planning my route & practising with my camping
equipment in the garden. I plan to do a couple of park runs on route and I
have also entered the Perth 10k road race in Scotland on 28th August, the day
after I turn 50.
18
I’m doing my challenges to raise
funds for the wonderful Hillside
Animal Sanctuary where the money
is spent so wisely to help animals
in need. My sponsor forms are
available locally in the village shop,
Dr’s surgery and the Church.
Thank you all for your kind support

WHODUNIT !
BIGGS has been found dead in the club lounge, his wine poisoned.
Four men, seated on a sofa and two chairs in front of the fireplace are
discussing the foul deed. Their names are Selby, Morris, Clark and
Bell. They are, not respectively, a general, schoolmaster, admiral and
doctor.
a) The waiter pours a glass of whiskey for Selby and a beer for Morris.
b) In the mirror over the fireplace, the general sees the door close behind the waiter.
He turns to speak to Clark, next to him.
c) Neither Bell nor Morris has any sisters.
d)The schoolmaster is a teetotaller.
e) Bell, who is sitting in one of the chairs, is the admiral’s brother-inlaw.
f) The schoolmaster is next to Bell on his left.
Suddenly a hand moves stealthily to put something in Selby’s whisky.’ It is the murderer. No one has left his seat and no one else is in
the room. What is the
profession of each man, where is he sitting, and who lS the murderer?

Table Tennis at the Centre
Norwich and District Table Tennis League
www.ndttl.co.uk
The Norwich and District Table Tennis League held their Presentation
evening in May at the Norfolk County Council Sports and Social Club.
It was good to see St Faiths Centre “B” receive the Division 2 trophy
handed to Simon Halliday, Andy Watson and Richard Westgate, who
stormed through the season with only two losses, to give them a
comfortable return to Division 1 next season. That will mean that we will
have a local derby at the Centre between the “A” and “B” team which will
be hotly contested , I have no doubt!
25
Their personal results are worth recording, with Andrew Beane played 38 won
33; Richard Westgate played 36, won 31; Simon Halliday played 41, won 34,
Andy Watson played 39, won 27. My “A” team will have to look out next
season! I may need some summer training sessions.
I did question what happened to prevent a clean sweep for the season, and
with a glint in his eye, Andy Watson said it was the hypothermia that set in
during that cold spell with no heat in the room we play in at the Centre. (Now
repaired and working OK, I hasten to add!) So it was clearly our fault!!
In Division 1, we managed to stay in mid-table, and finished 8th. The “A”
team players, Paul Arthurs, Andy Cullum and myself, enjoyed the season
with some satisfactory results.( Paul Arthurs played 68 and won 49; Andy
Cullum played 71,won 40, and I played 65, won 22, so have become “the
weakest link”, I fear!) For once, we were neither in the promotion stakes, nor
in danger of relegation, as has been the case over the last 5 or six seasons.
In the Dereham League, St Faiths finished only 1 place away from the relegation spot, so should be congratulated to stay up, as Division 2 would not
appeal to them. There is a wide difference in standard between the only two
divisions in Dereham. Bintree were a bit overwhelmed and suffered at the
base of the Division 1 table with “nil points” you can see.Our team would
gain little satisfaction in Division 2, so they must be very careful next season
to maintain at least their current level with their squad of Andrew Calver,
Wayne Lubbock , Paul Arthurs and Andrew Parker.
26
St Faiths Centre has become a popular venue with the league
In April, St Faiths Centre hosted the Bill Todd Cup and the Handicap Cup
finals.
The Bill Todd Cup was won by Wensum “A” for a 7th time running, who beat
CEYMS “A”.
Wensum players were Lauren Charles, Neil Charles, and Tony Zeqiri, and
CEYMS were Ben Thompson, Shaun Parsley and Mats Olsson.
A very high standard of table tennis was displayed at St Faiths, from the best
players in the area. Lauren is ranked senior ladies England no 7, and husband,
Neil is senior men’s no 52.
Foxwood were winners of the Handicap Cup, beating Taverham. The Cup was
presented by our President Robert King.
On May 26th the AGM for the Norwich and District Table tennis League will
be held at the Centre.
Next season will commence in September. I will now have a break from
the world of table tennis, so have a good summer, St Faiths, Horsham and
Newton

One Upmanship
At the traffic lights an MG Midget pulls up next to a Rolls Royce “Do you
have a carphone?” the driver asks the driver of the Rolls. “Of course I have”
replies the haughty deluxe car owner. “Well, do you have a fax machine?”
The driver of the Rolls sighs “I have that too”. “Then do you have a double
bed in the back?” the Midget driver wants to know. Ashen faced the Rolls
speeds off.
That afternoon he gets a mechanic to install a double bed in his vehicle. A
week later the Rolls driver passes the same MG Midget parked on the roadside - back windows misted up and steam pouring out. The arrogant driver
pulls over, gets out and bangs on the Midgets window until the driver sticks
his head out. “I want you to know that I have had a double bed installed”
brags the Rolls driver.
The Midget driver is unimpressed “You got me out of the shower to tell me
that”.

St Faiths May Fayre 2016
Saturday May 7th 2016 and the St Faith May Fayre was in full swing by
11am with the band playing before the St Faiths Olympics and the Teddy
Bear Zip wire!
The sunshine brought our biggest attendance and we raised in excess of
£2000 which will be shared equally between the Village Pre school, Primary
School and the Church.
There are too many people to thank, from those who helped set up and take
down the tents and those who manned the stalls. If you played a part in
helping or attending then please accept our sincere thanks.
Our committee of five people need more people to join us. Sadly, without
more people to help plan this event, then it is unlikely to happen in the
future. We meet once a month for a couple of hours and there are many skills
we need help with.
Please contact us or give your feedback and your thoughts on the May Fayre
using Facebook or contact Sue on 01603 893112
WE ALSO NEED YOU!
As St Faiths Centre is run by volunteers and our Lounge Bar is staffed by
volunteers we would also be glad of more people to join us. Just contact any
of the Committee Members listed at the front of this Journal and they will be
more than happy to give you information of how you can become involved
This Journal would also welcome more news from village organisations,
clubs and sports teams, in particular details and photographs of events you
have held or are holding. Take the opportunity to promote yourselves at no
cost!

We held our first Open Tournament of the year on 14th May and had 27
competitors from around the region.
We were fortunate that the weather stayed fine and a good time was had by
all who attended.
Dianne and Les won in fine style.
The fine chap in the middle is the vice-chair of the Wanderers Club, Ted,
who was presenting the prizes.
As we look at the picture Dianne is on the left, Les is on the right (just to

THANK YOU
Sincere thanks from the Friends of St Faiths School for the donation
received from the funeral after the very sad loss of Paul Nightingale.
At the moment the figure is around £500.
Paul was always a great supporter of the school and they will be choosing
a piece of equipment that can be purchased in his name.
THE GRUMMITT FAMILY
We would like to thank the people of St Faiths for their wonderful and
caring support that they gave us after we sadly lost our “Lovely Ted”.
All the kindness will stay with us as we go forward with him in our hearts.
Thank you the St Faiths Centre Committee for the beautiful bouquet
