We cannot thank him enough for his dedication and help in this important task and we are sure those of you who have seen him on a Tuesday will join the Committee in their sincere gratitude. Bruce Ridgeway has kindly agreed to take over the bookings but there will be a change of time and day. The trouble is I am writing this article on the first day of the school summer holidays knowing that with peoples summer breaks it might not get read until the very end of the summer holidays, possibly up to 6 weeks’ time, which is a long time and anything could have happened, such is the way of things when you have to write for deadlines and publication dates. Even the daily papers are occasionally caught out when a significant news story breaks out in the early hours. Time is a strange concept, eagerly anticipated holidays that may have been planned for weeks, months or years are suddenly in the past and the anticipation gives way to memory. Whilst August can, and hopefully is, a restful month, September can be both challenging and exciting. A month of new beginnings especially in our schools with new children and maybe new staff as well. This year there is the matter of the Scottish Independence vote that could change centuries of history for our islands. Change can be feared and/or eagerly anticipated and yet it is a part of life from our earliest years until the day that ‘we are changed’ at the end of mortal life itself. I have heard it said, as I’m sure have you – you may even have said it, ‘I/we don’t like change’. I wonder why that is – given that change is happening all around us all the time? Take the Scottish independence vote for example. I don’t want Scotland to leave the United Kingdom, I don’t want that sort of change. But when I really analyse my response what is it that I fear beyond change itself? If Independence is achieved by Scotland how will it affect me, will it affect me? Probably not so why should I be concerned about it beyond wanting to hold on to the familiar sound of the United Kingdom. Of course it can even be quite unhealthy if individuals continue to resist change if it is deemed to be of ‘no benefit to me!’ We live in a very selfcentred world, but the world does not revolve around us, even if we think that sometimes it should. 8 The only certainty about change is that it will and does come. The real issue that change represents to us is our ability to honestly and fairly evaluate it in order to see as to whether it is beneficial to our society as a whole or not. Having said that we need to be able to accept and even embrace change, we also need to be able to discern when to resist it. Or as the words of the well-known ‘Prayer of Serenity’ puts it, ‘God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.’ Keith WEST LANE CEMETARY TIDY Saturday 18th October 2014 from 10:00am The main task required is the removal of the earth mound that is even more exposed now that the conifer tree has gone. As the ground is consecrated the soil cannot be removed from the cemetery so spades/rakes/wheel barrows & people will be required to relocate the soil around the churchyard. We hope to have a mechanical digger available to help load up wheelbarrows All volunteers welcome - the more we get the less the work. Rev’d Keith Rengert - Rector PARISH WALL MEMORIAL We have put together a book containing details of the service records of the men named on this memorial which will go on display in the Church from 4th August. However, we would like to appeal to the residents of the Parish for any photographs of those named on the memorial so that they can be scanned and a copy placed in the book. The original would be returned to the family. On Saturday evening there will be a concert by Aylsham Town Band and music in the Church on Saturday and Sunday featuring music from the shows. There will also be the Festuval Grand Draw, children’s activities, a cake stall and refreshments plus light lunches on the Saturday. The Festival Service will be at 11.15 a.m. on Sunday. On Saturday and Sunday afternoon viewing of the Medieval Wall painting in the Priory will be available. 12 13 Another exciting and busy term is drawing to a close and we can look back on many happy memories. The Kingfishers class (years 5 and 6) treated us to a fabulous performance of their pantomime ‘Sleeping Beauty’ which was written and directed by their class teacher Mr. Risebrow. The costumes and props were excellent and the children did us proud with brilliant acting and dancing. This year also involved some audience participation when Mr. Risebrow, Miss Rix and a group of mums (including our Chair of Governors) took to the stage to treat us to a fantastic dance to Steps’ ‘Chain Reaction’! The children’s faces were a picture as they saw their teachers and mums get up and dance!! Miss Wilson (our P.E. coordinator) seems to have a knack with predicting the weather and we were very fortunate to have a beautiful sunny day for Sports Day, which was the culmination of an exciting ‘Healthy Living’ week. We began with a variety of team events, and finished with individual races for which children won points for their house team as well as stickers to celebrate their own performance. We have also enjoyed some wonderful class trips this term. The Ducklings and Robins classes both visited the East Anglia Transport Museum where they learnt about the development of transport and experienced rides on the tram, trolley bus and steam train. The Barn Owls had a wonderful outing to London when they travelled by train and underground (“the best fun ever”!) to visit the British Museum. They have been studying the Vikings and Roman Britain this year and showed great interest in the displays – although their favourite displays were the mummies in the Egyptian room! They all agreed it was their best school trip so far, describing it as “awesome”, “epic” and “amazing”! Finally we are saying a fond farewell to two members of staff. Firstly the Robins class teacher, Mrs Turner, who has been at our school for three years. We want to say a big thank you to her for all she has done for the school and to wish her happy and relaxing days as she leaves to spend more time with her family. Secondly we are saying goodbye and thank you to Lucie Bale, one of our Mid-day Supervisors, and we wish her every success with Lucie Lou’s, her highly recommended floristry business! 14 Ali Hall, our Chair of Governors writes: We are pleased to report that under our Interim Headteacher, Ms Kett, the school has been making good progress towards the targets set by Ofsted. During this last term the Governing Body have been considering the options around the leadership of the school, whilst at the same time reviewing our strategic vision. The governors believe that it is crucial to retain the strengths of our church school, which benefits greatly from its strong links with the church and also from being part of the local community. However we recognise that we also need a future for the school that delivers • A robust staffing and leadership structure to raise teaching and learning standards • Greater opportunities open to pupils in their learning and extra cur ricular activities • Opening the school to new ideas, sharing expertise and opportuni ties both with other schools and other clusters We believe that this vision is best delivered by working closely with other schools. Having looked at a number of options, the Governing Body has decided to form a partnership with Hainford and Frettenham Primary Schools, sharing, in the first instance, an experienced Interim Headteacher whilst we seek to appoint a permanent Executive Headteacher to take the school forward and to deliver the improvements identified by Ofsted. 15 Open Morning – November 12th You are warmly invited to visit our school for an Open Morning on November 12th from 9.30 – 11.30 a.m. when you will be able to see the school ‘in action’ and to ask any questions you may have. Ms Kett will be leaving us at the end of term, as her commitments do not give her the capacity to take on the fulltime role this requires. However she will be working with the school and the new Interim Headteacher, Mr John Marshall-Grint, in the Autumn Term to ensure an effective handover and to give continued support. We would like to extend our very great appreciation to Ms Kett for supporting our school at this time and for enabling us to make real progress towards our targets. * * * * * THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION WOMAN’S SECTION Our meetings are held at St Faiths Mission Room on the third Thursday of each month at 2.00 p.m. Anyone interested will be most welcomed At the August meeting Beverly Cooper will be speaking about World War II In September Gemma Kiss will speak about recyling Until the end of August we are collecting 2p for our funds 36 x 2p = 1 yard and we are hoping to reach a lot of yards We will be having a JUMBLE SALE on SATURDAY 11th OCTOBER at 2.00 p.m. in St Faiths Mission Room 16 17 18 St Faiths Good Neighbour Scheme Serving the villages of Horsham and Newton St Faith (www.sfgns.co.uk) Just to remind you that we are here to help you in a neighbourly way with lifts to the doctors, hospital, dentist, etc. Also, if you require a prescription picked up from the Surgery or assistance with your shopping or any small household task please let us know by telephoning the number below: 0750 696 7280 We would like to assure you that all our volunteers are from the two villages and are completely reliable. After the appropriate procedures have been followed, the Council will decide whether or not to seek co-option for the short period before the elections in May 2015. At the previous meeting in June, Rachel Scarff from Cross Keys Close was co-opted to the Council. After obtaining competitive quotes Norse have been awarded a contract amendment for complete grounds maintenance in addition to the gang mowing at Newton Park. Vegetation from residents gardens overhanging the footpath is a persistent problem at this time of year and I receive numerous calls on this subject. Please be aware of what is growing on your boundaries and have consideration for your fellow parishioners. Consideration for others is also a persistent problem in Newton Street with double parking in places causing delays and frustration. If you see anyone obstructing the highway to prevent others passing and you are able to record the registration plate or even better to take a photograph please ring the police on 101 or email to [email protected] On a point of clarification, the public footpath from Newton Street through Middle Farm to Mill Lane is exactly what is says. Cycling and horse riding are not permitted and the rules on dog fouling are just the same as those applying to a tarmac path. Jim Graves – Clerk to the Council Tel: 01603 898621 [email protected] 20 21 Meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday in the month at the Mission Room and start at 2.00 p.m. In June we went to Lavenham where members did their own thing and in the afternoon we had a scenic ride . We finished our day at the Castle Carvery at Bowthorpe. A good day was had by all. A lovely morning greeted us for our trip to Bury St Edmunds where members did some retail therapy and looked at the lovely gardens before going to Cherry Tree Nursery at Pulham to have a browse around. We then went to The Countryman at Tasburgh for a very delicious meal thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. We all came home very hot and tired with very full tummies. A lovely trip. In August we shall be going to Walsingham and then on to Heacham Lavender with the possibility of a trip round the lavender fields. In September we shall be going to Ely. 22 23 Meetings are normally held in the Mission Room on the third Thursday in each month at 7.45 p.m. Enquiries to Mary Hewitt on 01603 867140 Thursday 18th September Raptors Trust - Clive Britcher THE DAY THE RAIN CAME DOWN AND TURNED THE GREEN BACK INTO A POND! 24 25 26 Horsford Heroes Short Mat Bowls Club So, it’s August !! The cuckoo is heading back to Africa. The Swallows are gathering on the telegraph wires. The Autumn/Winter bowls season beckons and hopes are running high. Some of our team – Sue and Peter Fox have been honing their skills with the Norfolk over Sixties Team throughout the summer whilst others of our club have been out on the grass bowls greens ( hope not too many soakings) however, very soon everyone will be back in the village halls around Norfolk in readiness for the coming bowls season. We are very fortunate, I am delighted to say, that our club will have new mats to play on thanks to Andy Drummee who has managed to secure funding awards from the Big Lottery Fund and the Broadland District Council’s Community Activities Grant Fund, which together have given us enough grant money to buy four new mats and Gillets and Jerkins for club members. Once again, on behalf of the club I would like to extend a big “Thank You” to Andy for all the time consuming work he has put in to achieve this. We are hosting the Norfolk Summer League Presentation Evening in the Sports Hall on Monday 18th August which is on the same night as our Pre Season Meeting. Might be worth a look. Anyone thinking about coming along to us to give short mat bowls a try need not worry about the cost. The first season is FREE and it only costs £2 per game to play. For further information please ring Roger and Lin 01603 418409 or Sue and Peter 01603 788386 27 Following our previous report it is pleasing to advise that a further successful come and try petanque barbecue evening was held on 9th May for the Meet Norwich friendship group. In addition a come and try petanque event was held late afternoon on 12th June for a group of Taverham brownies. It was apparent from both these events that many of the participants have the ability to become competent players and thanks are due to their co-ordinators and our Club members involved in organisation and tuition, plus of course the St Faiths Centre bar staff. Our second competition of the season was held on Saturday 28th June but inclement weather prior to the event contributed to a lower than expected entry. Despite this the event produced some very close encounters with all teams losing at least one game. At the conclusion it was apparent that Claudine Guillmain, Ray Beales and Graham Beales of Gauloises were the winners following a last match 8-7 victory against the fourth placed team comprising Jackie Knowles, Bob Urquhart and Robert Knowles. The runners up were Georgie Wright, Chris Cunningham and Chris Peel with Pam Cracknell, Phil Pearson and Louise Smith in third place. 28 29 At the current time Dolphins and Hawks are placed mid table in Division 1 of the Norfolk County League, whilst Wombats are in a similar position in Division 2. Wildcats have experienced difficulties in fielding a settled side in Division 2 and are currently in the lower reaches of the league, which is almost identical to Wallabies in Division 3. Hawks are the only Club team to progress to the quarter finals of the KO Shield and they have been rewarded with a home match against Yarmouth Bloaters on 31st July. Wallabies have reached a similar stage in the KO Plate and also have a home match against Hethersett Sporting on the same date. The Club’s popular Circle in the Sand Pairs competition will again be held at the Bacton end of Walcott beach on Sunday 10th August with registration at 10.30am for an 11.00am start. We already have several entries for this event and look forward to more joining on the day. Congratulations to Club members Curtis Hoy, Bob Urquhart, James Urquhart, Derek Shoesmith, Josh Wilcox, Peter Walker, Mick Sadler and Vincent Sadler who have all qualified to represent the Anglia Region in the National Inter Regional Championships to be held at Hayling Island on the weekend of 13th/14th September. The Club Committee have arranged for all Club members a Club barbecue to be held at the St Faiths Centre practice session on Friday 29th August commencing 7.30pm and it is hoped this will attract a good attendance. 30 31 Garden and outside maintenance. Remember - old folk are worth a fortune with silver in their hair gold in their teeth, stone in their kidneys, lead in their feet and gas in their stomachs. As I am getting older ,a few changes are affecting my life, in fact I have become a frivolous old girl. I am seeing five gentlemen every day, as soon as I wake up, will power helps me out of bed and then I go to see Jimmy Riddle. Next it is time for Earl Grey. When they leave, Arthur ritis shows up and keeps me company for the rest of the day. He does not like to stay in one place very long so he moves from joint to joint. After such a busy day I am really exhausted and glad to go to bed with Johnny walker. What a life! P,S, The preacher came to call the other day. He said that at my time of life I should be thinking about the hereafter. I told him, Oh I do- all the time. No matter where I am .if I am in the living room, upstairs, in the kitchen or down in the basement, I ask myself, now what am I here after. 33 34 35 36 ST FAITHS SHORT MAT BOWLS CLUB We play on Friday evenings and Tuesday afternoons in the Sports Hall at the Centre Do come and give us a look For more information contact us at [email protected] NORWICH COMPANY OF ARCHERS We meet on Sundays at the Centre For details contact Gerry Wegg Tel: 01603 411334 All necessary equipment is provided.
