How to string an electric guitar
In this example, the high E string is
used. It breaks more frequently than
the others because it is the smallest.
This is what the ends of the string
look like.

Turn the guitar so the back side is
facing you.
Pass the bare end of the string
through the hole on the far left.

The string will come out
on the front of the guitar,
through the bridge.
Pull the string out from
here as far as it will go.

Bring the end of the string up to the
headstock and pass it through the peg hole1.
Make sure to:

• Pass the string under the retainer2
• Guide the string into the groove3
on the nut of the guitar

Note on which side of the peg the strings go.
They should always be toward the inside of the headstock.

Bring the string in a loop
around the peg.
Make sure to:
• Pass the loop over the
loose end of the string
• Keep the string on the
correct side of the peg

Tighten the string around the peg.
Leave about 1½” (4cm) of slack
in the rest of the string.
Tip: use the length
of the 1st fret as a
reference.

Bend the loose end of the
string upwards.
This will help ensure the
string gets locked into place.

Start turning the tuning key
counterclockwise.

On the first turn, wrap the
string over the loose end.
On the second turn, wrap the
string under the loose end.
Now the string is locked in place.

Continue to wind the string
until it is no longer slack.
Cut off the excess string.
Congrats, you’re done
stringing the guitar!

Power on the tuner
and clip it onto the
guitar’s headstock.

rarely goes out of tune.

Pluck the low E string.

The screen will display the name of the note. There are 3 possible results:
Indicator points to the left: :
note is flat.
Indicator is vertical:
; note is in tune.
Indicator points to the right:
: note is sharp.
Action Î turn key

tighten the string.
Action Î move on to
the next highest string.
In this example, A.
Action Î turn key clockwise
to loosen the string.
How to tune a guitar
Once a note is in tune,
you are ready to repeat
the process with the
next highest string.
