We all know what they say about first impressions. You never get a second chance to make another; the first one is the lasting one – the colloquialisms go on and on. Some research suggests humans need only seven seconds to determine whether they will get along with a new acquaintance or resign them to a place where only stink eyes are exchanged. Intimidating stuff, first impressions. Within the pages of this month’s YOU Magazine, you will meet 20 local women who make some strong impressions. Maybe this printed equivalent to a handshake will be a barrage of first encounters or maybe you will get reacquainted with some old friends. Either way, I hope you enjoy getting to know these inspirational women who represent our dynamic and diverse community. In an issue all about introductions, it makes sense to introduce myself as YOU Magazine’s new editor. It’s an honor to be entrusted with a publication that has such a devoted following and plays a key role in championing local women. In a nutshell, I am thrilled to be here. By Amelia Compton Wolff I look forward to learning, growing, changing, stumbling, recovering and celebrating with all of you in the months and years ahead. Your feedback is invaluable to the success of YOU, so please drop me a line any time. Nice meeting you, Editor, YOU Magazine Buy your dream home in Door County! Hair and makeup services provided by Rhiannon Hockers of TruColors Salon, Allouez. 20 Annual YOU Magazine Spotlight women to know Animal lover. Fitness guru. Community advocate. Executive vice president. Thanks to our 2013 Women to Know, these are just a few of the ways women in our community can be defined. These 20 unique stories, as varied as they are, all share a few common themes – hard work gets results, passion pays off and kindness is indeed king. Get to know these 20 fearless, inspirational women, then get out there and be one yourself. 8 AUGUST 2013 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you you spotlight Heather Trevarthen owner of Ellipse Fitness, Allouez Heather Trevarthen, 35, loves helping others and making a difference. Once overweight, she became determined to “never go back,” and it changed her life. “It sounds cliché, but I have no greater joy than being a part of the transformations at Ellipse and supporting our community, in any way possible,” she says. One of those ways is through hosting Victory Over Violence, a fundraiser for domestic abuse. Rebecca Ann Krull veterinarian and co-owner, Green Bay and Allouez Animal Hospitals Dr. Rebecca Krull, 37, is used to holding paws – and hands – as a small animal veterinarian. She began her path toward her career as a “kennel kid” for Dr. Neil Rechsteiner at the Green Bay and Allouez Animal Hospitals. She graduated in 2005 with her DVM, began working at the practice and became co-owner in 2008. “I always wanted to be a veterinarian, from the moment I was little,” she reflects. “I am passionate about veterinary medicine, about caring for furry family members and for educating owners on how to best care for their cats and dogs.” Krull is just as devoted to being a great mom to children Andrew, 5, and Emily, 3. It’s a delicate balance achieved with the help of her husband, Chad. “I have worked so hard for my career, but my kids are my greatest joy and hardest job,” she explains. “I can have the longest day at work, but when I walk in the door they are ecstatic to see me and just want to cuddle.” “I am passionate about this cause. I hope everyone finds a cause they are passionate about and support it. The community is only as strong as those individuals and businesses in it.” The drive to help others is something her mother instilled in her early on. “My mom is always ready to help others and seems to find a way to ‘do the right thing.’ In life, the learning never ends, but I try to follow her lead as much as I can!” Jacqueline M. Bushner owner of Essential to Wellness, De Pere Jacqueline Bushner, 50, is fervent in her mission to help people take care of themselves. As a massage therapist, she uses her trade to help others who suffer from a multitude of health issues. “Sometimes customers come into my office, and I can see the pain and/or depression on their face,” she explains. “When I can figure out the source of that pain and use the tools in my tool kit to relieve them of that pain…it really makes my day too! What could be more joyful than seeing that pain alleviated for someone else?” Bushner tackles her own obstacles through biking – the bigger the hill, the better. “I love to bike hills,” she says. “Big hills, long hills and lots of hills. The up hills are challenging and the down hills are exhilarating! “Feed your body, mind and spirit and you will heal your life,” she adds. “I believe this with all my heart.” AUGUST 2013 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you 9 you spotlight Major Robin Leigh (Bonifield) Shiels officer for The Salvation Army People in need depend on Major Robin Shiels for comfort. From giving a hug to helping families get back on their feet, Shiels, 54, changes lives. “I knew the Army was where I belong because showing God’s love as we help people is what motivates what we do,” she says. Shiels says, with a smile, that her work allows her to practice one of her quirks – “collecting” people. Christine Woleske executive vice president, Bellin Health Lifelong learning is a mission for Christine Woleske, 49. Her career path started with a degree in healthcare administration from UW-Eau Claire. She then completed her law degree at Marquette University, and after a few years in law, joined Bellin in 1998 as the compliance officer, then became vice president and general counsel before her current role. “I never want to stop learning new things – whether it’s a new skill, a new way of doing something, or just taking a class about something I don’t know much about,” she says. Her dad, Gerard Wilde, is her role model. “He has always demonstrated loyalty and commitment and a great work ethic,” she says. “He was an amazing caregiver for my mom for the many years she suffered with Alzheimer’s. I have tried to follow his example in my life by working hard, being generous toward others and being loyal to my family.” 10 “I really love people!” she says. “And some of them love me back enough to let me be more involved in their lives. And I call them ‘mine.’ I get to dedicate babies, do weddings and attend parties, graduations and retirements; I love being there for all the moments of their lives. “I have ‘a-ha’ moments every day,” she adds, “that remind me that God is using me to fulfill His purpose through my life and those I am blessed to interact with.” Natalie Parrish Culver’s Keep smiling and do what’s right – those are words everyone should live by, and it’s the mantra of Natalie Parrish, 37, of Green Bay. Parrish, who has Down syndrome, was inspired by her parents to always be the best she can be; she also finds great joy from her family, her staff through ASPIRO and her job at Culver’s. Of the secret to her success, Parrish says, “Trying new things at work. Having my family and the ASPIRO staff there for me.” In her free time, Parrish likes going on vacations – especially Disney World – participating in Special Olympics and visiting the YMCA. “I like to do word searches, my DS games, my Wii Fitness, sports and dance exercises,” she adds. When Parrish comes upon struggles in her life, she says she keeps a positive attitude. Knowing how it has helped her persevere, her wish is, “For Down syndrome persons to keep learning and trying new things.” AUGUST 2013 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you CONGRATULATIONS CHRIS WOLESKE You are truly someone to know, and we’re grateful we do. Chris Woleske Executive Vi V ce Preside dent de nt,, Be Bellin Heaalt lthh AUGUST 2013 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you 11 you spotlight Kristin Rabas public affairs and marketing communications counsel, Sr., Aurora Health Care She’s the woman you want on your team at work – and as a good friend. Tw e n t y - e i g h t- y e a r- o l d Kristin Rabas’ attention to detail and knack for organization and planning makes her perfect for her role at Aurora Health Care in Green Bay. It also means she’s the one who ensures great get-togethers for friends and family. A graduate of UW-Madison, Rabas says in addition to her work ethic, networking has been her key to success. “I’ve always considered myself a people person, and I find it easy to talk to just about anyone,” she explains. “I’ve always believed that relationships and helping others out when they need it will help you succeed in life both professionally and personally.” Joan M. Rousseau president/owner, ACR Heating and Cooling, Green Bay Joan Rousseau lives by the phrase “Nothing worthwhile comes easy; you have to work hard for what you want.” Her position with ACR came about as a way to help her family business, and her previous work experiences gave her the strength to serve in a leadership role. “I love being able to work sideby-side with my husband and am fortunate to work with a supportive staff,” says Rousseau, 58. “I know people are relying on me, and I can’t let them down.” Rousseau’s other passion in life is spreading the word about adoption. “My husband and I were fortunate to be able to adopt two beautiful children,” she explains. “They have brought nothing but joy and happiness to our lives. I’m a huge supporter of adoption. I love to assist people with their adoption questions and the general process.” 12 AUGUST 2013 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you you spotlight Cora L. Haltaufderheid COO, PMI Entertainment Group From circus elephants to jersey-clad hockey players to Elton John in a sweat suit – such is a day in the life of Cora Haltaufderheid, 58. “In the past 16 years in the entertainment/ event business, my career has evolved just as PMI and the Brown County Veterans Memorial Complex has,” explains Haltaufderheid. “I can honestly say that there is never a dull moment in our complex or at the ever busy Meyer Theatre. I am very blessed to work with a group of people – of all ages – who have a passion for fun!” And while work has brought amazing opportunity to Haltaufderheid, her greatest joy comes from her family, including her husband Rick, daughter Allison, 23, and son Jordan, 21. Says Haltaufderheid of her many blessings, “Every day is a gift!” Molly Johnson artist, instructor at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College Molly Johnson, 48, of Green Bay, has many roles: owner, executive director and instructor at The Academy of Fine Art; professional artist; NWTC fine art instructor; Academy Pop-up Gallery curator; wife; mother; and grandmother. But for Johnson, success is defined not by titles, but by how she helps others through those roles. Evident of that fact is a quote she looks at every day. “More important than being successful is being significant. Significance is making a contribution to others,” she reflects. “I am not sure what newspaper I cut that out of, but it has been taped on my fridge for 25 years.” Ensuring that fine art remains an integral part of the area’s culture is just as important to her. “I push for everyone to expose themselves and their children to all the varied forms out there,” she explains. “From galleries, studio tours and fairs, there are plenty of free opportunities to get out there and support the local artists.” Kari Lynn Moody director of Alumni Relations, University of WisconsinGreen Bay You may have seen her sing the national anthem for area sporting events, but singing is just one of the many areas this dynamo excels in. Wife to Pete and mom to Sophia, 7, Elaina, 6, and Brynna, 3, the 35-year-old has a full plate at home and at work. “As a professional and a parent, work-life balance is always a challenge,” she reflects. “I find working in a field I absolutely love makes it easier to leave my children at home. I also find putting myself 100 percent into whatever I’m doing helps me to get things accomplished and makes for less guilt.” She credits her mother, Pat Heier, with instilling her with that work ethic. “She taught me to give back, work hard, love unconditionally and lean on those around you for support,” says Moody. “She is an amazing woman, and I am so proud to be her daughter.” AUGUST 2013 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you 13 you spotlight Sunny Lynn DuBois Jeanne Ann Agneessens digital content manager/ visual coordinator, August Haven; owner/ designer of Ebb and Flow Flowers, Green Bay program manager, Leadership Green Bay As program manager for Leadership Green Bay, Jeanne Agneessens, 65, has the unique opportunity to live out her enthusiasm for giving back to the community through her career. She has designed floral arrangements for clients like Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Studios, and now Sunny DuBois, 34, is blazing a new trail in Green Bay—creating amazing things for others to enjoy. “The program I manage is a great benefit to this community,” she explains. “I have always believed that and known it to be true. Working for something that has great value doesn’t seem like a job, more like a purpose.” “Whatever it may be, the whole process of idea conception through to completion is rewarding, but there is nothing like seeing your vision become a reality,” she explains. An avid volunteer for her children while they were in school, at church and for the conservation group the Izaak Walton League, Agneessens is inspired by her experiences. DuBois says it is helpful that she’s “part left brain, part right brain.” “I have an intensely creative side where I conceptualize ideas and projects down to the finest detail, but I am also very organized and even practical which allows me to execute my creative vision. “After 28 years in the Izaak Walton League, I am serving my ninth year on the National Endowment Board as a member and the secretary,” she says. “It has given me great insight into leadership, what not to do as a leader, and what you should be doing.” “When people say to me now, ‘I’ve seen your work and I love your style,’ it is more than just a compliment, it is validation,” she adds. Nicole Hoffmann vice president of development, ASPIRO From the very beginning, Nicole Hoffman says she has loved her work. “Working at ASPIRO affords me the privilege of working with a group of extremely passionate co-workers and volunteers,” Hoffman, 37, explains. “Our work to support individuals with disabilities thrive in their lives is both rewarding and truly humbling.” Hoffman also relishes the time she spends with her 7-year-old son. Being a parent helped teach her to always be present, no matter what she is doing, to ensure success. “When I am at work, my full attention is on my job. When I am at home, my full attention is on my family and home. I find that when I mix the two, I’m not very good at either. “After a challenging day or week at work, playing or talking with my son brings everything back into perspective,” she adds. “He makes me laugh every day.” 14 AUGUST 2013 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you you spotlight Michaela Mae Franklin head coach, UW-GB Women’s Volleyball A proud Midwest girl, Michaela Franklin, 30, has made her mark on and off the volleyball court—she was once a part of the Big 12 championship team at Kansas State University. While she shapes the athletic careers of women each season, she also finds immense joy in watching her players become successful people and students. “I think I wanted to coach because, after my mom and grandma, the next biggest influences in my life were my Korissa Lynn Diehl coaches,” remembers Franklin. To ensure she’s a good example to the young women she molds, she says relies upon the foundation on which she was raised. “Things that my mom told me were you never burn a bridge, treat others the way you want to be treated and do the right thing. “I also hate to lose more than I like to win, so that has always driven me to work harder and be successful,” she adds. Jill Marie Dougherty donor relations/office operations manager, Green Bay Botanical Garden After losing her job – and her identity – in 2008, Jill Dougherty, 52, says she got back on her feet by volunteering, which led her down a new, exciting career path at the Green Bay Botanical Garden. She was inspired to find more satisfying work and a more meaningful and balanced life. program coordinator, YWCA AfterSchool Program As the after-school program coordinator for the YMCA, Korissa Diehl, 35, plays an integral role in helping low income, at-risk children in the community. It’s more than a job title for Diehl – it’s close to her heart. “During my teen years, I went down the wrong path in life and ended up becoming a parent at age 17,” she explains. “Not understanding how to raise a child, and feeling hurt, confused and scared, I found help in my community.” Working with teens who may find themselves in similar situations, Diehl knows it’s her chance to make a difference. “I am so passionate about giving children a voice to be heard, a second chance if they need it and helping them understand they can be and do anything they want in life,” she adds. “Loving the unlovable, encouraging the discouraged and finding strength for the weak will be what I strive for in this life.” “With the help of my recareer coach, Barbara Wulf, I took a personal inventory and realigned my resume with my head and my heart,” she explains. “Looking back on a 25-year corporate career in ice cream [at Good Humor], I realized I was moving in a new direction – giving not taking. Longing for a stronger people and community connection, I began a job search targeting learning environments, non-profits and organizations with proven community service missions.” “The GBBG is a great place to be – enjoying, learning and caring for the environment,” she adds. “It’s important for all of us to realize that over time, we continue to evolve – both personally and professionally.” AUGUST 2013 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you 15 you spotlight Janie Denis-Strutt Tricia A. Nell Green Bay native Janie Denis-Strutt surrounds herself with role models who, she says, abound with deep life lessons. Every day in Tricia Nell’s world is a challenge. Nell says it can be heartbreaking to deal with individuals who face problems like serious injury, juveniles with adult drug charges or a woman who has to testify against her ex-husband who sexually abused their children. attorney/owner, Tricia Nell Law Office, Green Bay and De Pere co-owner, Forte Modeling and Talent “I find and engage with positive-minded doers, and there I have found a fountain of knowledge” says. “Joy comes from those relationships and being surrounded by those who live graciousness. Be respectful and gracious, and it will come back to you tenfold.” Denis-Strutt, 51, believes there are several keys to success. Among them is attitude. “Your attitude defines your actions,” she says. “Your actions define your character. Your character defines who you are. Live with the attitude that your ‘cup is always half full’ – not half empty. My attitude is to see not-so-wise choices as opportunities for growth. “And when you embrace attitudes for growth and learning, especially in adversity, you are a winner,” she adds. “It is important to find a way to keep going every day because people count on you and your strength,” says Nell, 41. “Even in the toughest of times, it is important to keep on keepin’ on.” Being a great role model in the courtroom isn’t enough for Nell, who believes in always going the extra mile. She also helps empower young women through the “Dress the Girls Program,” which she founded. “[My grandmother] taught me the importance of giving to others,” says Nell. “She wholeheartedly believed that it was better to give than to receive and has instilled those same morals in me.” Staci L. Yates owner, Fiore’ Refurbished Arts and Accessories, Green Bay Green Bay native Staci Yates, 45, loves to recycle, reuse and restyle. As owner of Fiore’ in downtown Green Bay, this determined, truthful and strong woman lives the belief that something beautiful can be made from nothing. “I have met some beautiful people and to see someone leave my shop feeling happy inside makes me the happiest person on earth,” she says. “We are all unique in our own way. That doesn’t mean we can’t be trendy or fashionable, we just need to find what looks best on us and feel good about wearing it.” As a single mother to three children, Yates’ view of success is different than what has become the societal norm. “Every day we can make a difference in someone else’s life,” she explains. “Success is raising good kids that hold high values and morals and respect. Money is important, that’s apparent, but there is so much to be said about the path that leads you through the dark places but still brings you the sun. That’s success.” 16 AUGUST 2013 | www.greenbaypressgazette.com/you congratulations 2013 women to know Essential To Wellness Specializing in Ashiatsu Massage Co-Creating Healthy Lifestyles Essential Oils by Young Living Offering Free Classes www.essentialtowellness.com • (920) 619-9595 Congratulations to Jill Dougherty!
