LIBRARY GRAND OPENING
3 July 2016
It has been long awaited and the Main Library finally
opened its doors on 1 July 2016. The current library,
besides having ample leg space for reading as well
as a study area, features about 8,000 books and 7,000
DVDs and Blu Rays, ranging from classic novels to the
latest Academy Award winning films.
A big thank you to all Members, for your patience and
continuous feedback. Thank you also to Members such
as Mr Kelvin Kaw, Ms Shirley Low, Mr James Seetoh,
Mr David Goh, Mr Eugene Lim, the Books & DVD
Section Sub Committee Members, as well as the other
stakeholders for their time taken to discuss and share
ideas to ensure alignment with the final look and feel
of this very important space. Not forgetting the ladies
of the Library team in their effort to make sure that
everything is in order for Members to enjoy the comfort
of this brand new facility.
Last but not least, thank you to our very own Members
who are known writers, Ms Josephine Chia, Mr Robert
Yeo and Mr Richard Hale, for conducting wonderful
workshops in conjunction with Singapore’s ‘Let’s Read
Movement’ on the day of our Grand Opening.
Happy reading!

President’s Message
"...OUR ACCOMMODATION IS AN
OUTSTANDING WAY TO AUGMENT OUR
FINANCIAL POSITION..."
Dear Fellow Members
New Library
We are so pleased to have finally re-opened the Library in its
former location, after being housed temporarily almost one year
in the Sports Complex. On behalf of the General Committee,
I’d like to express a heartfelt thank you to the team who made
this possible – Books and DVD Sections, the Membership Services
Sub-Committee, as well as the Development and Planning SubCommittee, and of course, our staff.
The Committees were guided by the hundreds of comments
contained in the Library Survey, so hopefully they’ve carved out
a library that better meets the needs of our Membership. The
Reading Room and Library are now a combined space and open
daily from 9.00am until 8.00pm. As the Library Team continues to
iron out wrinkles, your feedback is very important, so please do
share your thoughts with us.
We officially opened the Library on 3 July and featured readings
from dear Member-authors Richard Hale, Robert Yeo and
Josephine Chia. We’ve included pictures from the opening on the
page to the left.
Hair Salon – A New Location
We are grateful for your positive vote at the Annual General
Meeting (AGM) to expand our accommodation by adding 11
new guest rooms on the 5th floor of the Sports Complex. In order
to enable us to commence the former spa demolition, we have
converted the Wheelhouse Function Room to accommodate the
Club’s hair salon. This bodes very well for our hair salon patrons
since this location is more accessible, larger, enjoys natural light
and has bathroom facilities nearby. As there have been many
lodged requests to address these shortcomings of the former hair
salon location, we consider this a significant benefit for our Club.
New Guest Rooms
Year-long, we have been reporting to you on this necessary
project. I say necessary because our accommodation is an
outstanding way to augment our financial position, even more so
now that the subscriptions increase did not receive Membership
support again at the recent AGM. Whilst we don’t have the final
construction schedule as yet, the first step is the relocation of the
hair salon. With that now complete, we are progressing to demolish
the space, in preparation for the guest rooms. We shall keep you
posted as information becomes available, but once again, thank
you for your support.
Club Development Task Force
This brings me to the very important subject of the
new task force, as voted upon at our recent AGM,
to focus on the future development of our land. The
General Committee has asked fellow Committee
Member Dr Thomas Khoo to chair this task force,
given his development expertise. We have sought
Club Development Task Force (CDTF) interest via our
electronic NewsBites and this group will soon embark
upon its Terms of Reference (TOR).
Charity
It also pleases me a great deal that our Club is
developing a culture of giving to those less fortunate.
Our 150th anniversary was a landmark year that saw us
donate about $500,000 and the spirit of care continues
this year. Recently in May, the Dance Section raised
$15,000 for the Cerebral Palsy Alliance Singapore at
their fully-booked charity event, ‘Saturday Night Fever’.
In July, the Swim Section’s ten-hour ‘High Ten!’ Charity
Swimathon and Gala Dinner, in aid of the Shaw-NKF-NUH
Children’s Kidney Centre (CKC), raised approximately
$140,000, and together with the matching dollar for
dollar grant from the Ministry of Education and a small
cursory top up grant from the Singapore Tote Board,
resulted in a total sum in excess of $300,000 being
raised. The difficulties these children face are a salutary
reminder to us of how vulnerable they are, and how
much our support is valued. Thank you to all Members
for your wonderful support of these worthy causes.
And on a final note, my dear fellow Members, I’d like to
wish Singapore, and you all a very Happy 51st National
Day!
Sincerely
Robert Wiener

Editor’s Message
Fellow Members
I’ve been noticing recently, in the news media, an increased
coverage on the topic of artificial intelligence (or AI for short).
I thought, perhaps, I could share some thoughts on it as well.
It has been said that the year of 2016 is the year of AI. And
frankly, it is pretty hard to ignore all the hype about it. Recent
significant advances in AI has led to several key milestone
accomplishments such as the recent public five-game Go
match between AlphaGo (an AI-based Go playing software
developed by Google DeepMind) and Lee Sedol (an 18-time
world champion in Go). AlphaGo ended up winning 4 out of
the 5 matches.
If you own a smartphone, you can already enjoy the benefits
of AI. My smartphone comes with a virtual personal assistant
called Siri. Siri is driven by AI, and is capable of doing a
variety of tasks for me on my smartphone. I can ask Siri to set
an appointment on my calendar, call a friend, send an SMS
message to someone, check on specific stock or currency
prices, do quick math calculations, set alarms, make notes
or reminders to myself, or do a quick search on the internet.
There was a time not too long ago, when I was doing all of
the above by clumsily tapping out on my smartphone’s
touchscreen. But now I just ask Siri, simply because it is faster,
and a lot more convenient. It also doesn’t hurt that Siri’s
underlying AI provides ‘her’ with a sense of humour. When
I asked Siri one day, “How come you’re so smart?”, ‘she’
responded, “I am not just a pretty face.”
In the work place, more sophisticated forms of AI are currently
working up the corporate ladder. For example, several
companies such as Clara Labs and x.AI provide AI personal
assistant services. The AI personal assistants, dubbed ‘Amy’ or
‘Clara’ specialise in the area of schedule management. All
you need to do is CC ‘Amy’ or ‘Clara’ in your emails along
with the other meeting participants, and start your email off
with the usual informal line such as “Hey guys, let’s meet. Amy
will make the arrangements.” and the AI personal assistants
will then take over the email thread, and manage the backand-forth correspondences with the parties involved, taking
into account of your own personal calendar schedule, and
meeting preferences. Once an agreed time and place is set,
‘Amy’ or ‘Clara’ will then send a Google Calendar invite to
all meeting participants with the complete time and address
of the meeting place, and end off the email thread with a
polite “Thank you and have a nice day!”, as any perfect
personal assistant would do. Testimonies of people who have
interacted with ‘Amy’ or ‘Clara’ have mentioned that they
didn’t know that they were corresponding with a software
program.
Yet another example of AI transformation in the work place
is in the legal realm. Traditionally, law firms would hire dozens
of paralegals and young attorneys to laboriously sift through
boxes of past court cases and legal resources to find the
information they need to try their cases. Today, however, more
and more law firms are slowly shifting towards using AI software
to sift through millions of documents and automatically tease
out the relevant ones.
PAGE 3 THE TANGLIN CLUB
"ROBOTS WILL NEVER
REPLACE THE WARM
FRIENDLY FACE AND THE
PERSONALISED SERVICE
THAT OUR STAFF PROVIDE."
Of course, one cannot talk about AI, and leave out its
twin sister ‘robotics’. Robots have been around for a
while. Traditionally, robots have remained in the factory
floors, quietly churning out consumer items all year round.
Lately, however, we are beginning to see bots roaming
around in the retail or public space, interacting with and
assisting customers, such as helping them find items in
a supermarket by leading them to the right section, or
taking down food orders at a restaurant, or doing security
patrols in public areas.
Today, I think that the advancement in AI and robotics has
reached a critical tipping point, such that in the next 20
years the workplace landscape will see an accelerated
transformation because of automation. A recent
collaboration study report between Citi and Oxford
Martin School cited that 35% and 47% of current UK and
US jobs respectively are at risk of being automated. The
report then continues to provide varying percentages for
other countries around the world.
So how is this all related to The Tanglin Club? Honestly, I
would hope that AI and robotics would be kept out of
the Club. I come to the Club to meet people, not robots.
There is a reason why the Club is called a social club.
When I walk up to a bar, I don’t want to see a robot
serving up my drinks. (By the way, there are already robots
serving in bars today. Seeing is believing. Go to YouTube,
and search for “Bionic Bar Bartenders”.) Robots will never
replace the warm friendly face and the personalised
service that our staff provide.
But who am I to say? Time will tell. Let’s see what happens
in 20 years’ time.
Enjoy our magazine.

Dear Members

51st birthday. Come dressed in red

Club Staffing
As you no doubt know, the service
industry in Singapore competes heavily
for its very limited human resources. This
not only increases the cost of labour,
but also means that we cannot recruit
sufficient personnel, thus leaving us
understaffed across most aspects of
the Club. Singapore operates a quota
system that provides for a ratio of foreign
workers to Singaporean workers. There
are insufficient Singaporeans wishing to
join the service industry, so although we
have qualified foreign candidates who
wish to join our team, we are unable to
hire them.
As a result, we have numerous vacant
positions, particularly within the F&B
service team, that we cannot fill. At
present, we are facing the Club’s
highest ever level of unfilled positions.
Unfortunately, this not only impacts
our service quality but places more
pressure on the team. Although we
have tried various schemes, such as
the hiring of seniors and partnering
with several polytechnics, Institute
of Technology Education (ITE) and
hospitality institutions on internship
programmes, our efforts continue to fall
short of our needs.
Closing the Gap
If we do not keep up with market
annual increments, we will be further
challenged to recruit or retain the right
staff. We survey several dozen hotels
and clubs and are guided by the
annual increment of the majority. In
short, we have no option but to follow
the market and this in turn, will place
further, upward pressure on our costs.
Club subscription rates remain at
2008 levels, despite what has been
approximately 25% inflation since then.
All our products, and services, including
staff, cost more than they did in 2008.
Further, the past couple of years has
seen downward pressure on our food
and beverage prices, which is our
primary revenue source. As a result, this
places greater need on the Club to close
this growing financial gap. Therefore, the
management team has been looking for
more ways to ‘tighten our belt’ and new
ways to create new Member benefits
and revenue streams.
For instance, last month, we introduced
the Online Bottle Shop, where Members
can conveniently place their wine orders
via our website at the click of a button. We
also recently launched the Wheelhouse
Takeaway Menu for your convenience,
and have enclosed a copy of the menu
along with this magazine. You might
have noticed the Tea Room display of
our inaugural mooncakes which are
perfect as gifts for family, friends and
business associates. Do refer to the
back cover for more details. We have
also reorganised to permanently close
a vacant F&B management position,
which should see us trim about $25,000
from our payroll this fiscal year.
Conservation Efforts
As you know, in May, we converted our
indoor tennis lights to LED. In so doing,
our consumption has dropped by
approximately 50% or $2,000 per month.
Fortunately, we have even better news.
We went to tender for the purchase of
electricity and we were successful in
dropping our electricity rate to save us
$153,000 per year from August 2016.
Combined, these two initiatives will help
us trim $91,000 from our budget this fiscal
year (ending 31 January). In addition,
we renegotiated our general insurance
and cable to save $26,000 and $11,000
respectively this fiscal year.
Toward Greater Exclusivity
In response to the callout for a more
exclusive and secured Club, we have
been increasing our security efforts.
Now that guest parking has been
permanently relocated to the Sports
Complex, the removal of guest traffic by
the Jackpot Room has made it possible
for us to install a new glass sliding door
entrance with a proximity tap access
system. This was installed about a
month ago for activation on 1 August.
Last year, we modified procedures
that required Members to tap in at the
Sports Complex, and we also installed
proximity tap access on Level 2 as well
as the poolside gate. This year, we’ve
also secured an additional five back of
house access points with new devices
to control access and soon we will be
rolling out an upgrade of our CCTV
cameras. This shift towards using security
equipment also means that we have
been able to modify our security payroll
costs downward by approximately
$50,000 per annum.
Value-Engineering
In view of the current market slowdown,
we have set about to find novel ways
to bring Members added-value. Over
the past few months, we have been
highlighting dozens of “Everyday Good
Value” efforts, which are now proving
quite timely.
If you haven’t noticed our new 5-hour
‘$5 Happy Hours’, you may wish to
gather your friends and take advantage
of this terrific offer. Please refer to page
15 for more details. We’ve also secured
a comprehensive range of take away
wines and spirits well below market
prices, that not only provide you the
convenience of shopping at the Club,
but also considerable savings.
When you consider that Club prices are
GST inclusive, do not attract service or
parking charges, nor require a profit
margin, the Club offers a decidedly
better value proposition than most
options in town. We certainly hope that
Members take advantage of our take
away sales and continue to support
the Club.
A Fresh Coat
Last but not least, please also note that
we have recently awarded a contract
for the repainting of the Sports Complex,
Sports Complex Car Park, Link Bridge
and Main Clubhouse Car Park. We will
be updating you in the coming weeks
of the painting schedule. In advance,
we apologise for any inconvenience
this may cause and thank you for your
patience while we spruce up.
In closing, on behalf of the Tanglin
Team, I’d like to wish you and your
family a very Happy National Day!
Warmly
Josie Tulipano

TANGLES REOPENS 18 AUGUST
We are pleased to inform Members that we will be reopening the Tangles Café on
Thursday, 18 August at 8.18am. Do plan to join us and experience a new Tangles with
a healthier, faster, more casual, self-serve environment. We have taken on board
thoughtful feedback shared with us at the various ‘menu focus group meetings’ and
are excited to further diversify our range of products and services for you. This outlet
will be the most relaxed of our restaurants.
Thank you for your patience during its closure. We have done our best to fulfil your
food and beverage needs in the interim by shifting the Tangles Express Lunch to
the Wheelhouse, opening the Beer Garden at 8.00am (versus 3.00pm) to provide a
venue for coffee gatherings, and augmented these offerings with vending machines
on Levels U1 and 2.
We are finalising variation orders with
the contractor, and once clear on our
remaining budget, we will confirm plans
for the Business Centre. We will be back in
touch with news as soon as it is available.

WHEELHOUSE FUNCTION ROOM REOPENS AS HAIR SALON, 1 AUGUST
In view of the Guest Rooms approval, we have relocated the Hair Salon from Level 5 of the Sports Complex to the Main
Clubhouse Wheelhouse Function Room. The Salon will benefit from the bigger, brighter and more accessible location, where
the restrooms are just nearby, as so often requested by Members. The Wheelhouse Function Room reopens as the Hair Salon on
Monday, 1 August. We would like to thank all Members for your patience and understanding during the transition.
FAREWELL TO FELLOW MEMBER PETER HOLMES
Mr Peter Holmes passed away peacefully at home on 27 May 2016, aged 92. Much loved
husband of the late Anne, beloved father of Brian and Cynthia, and grandfather of Laura,
Natasha and Michaela.
Peter served in the Royal Air Force during the war, worked as a surveyor with Surrey County
Council, then left for Singapore for 21 years where he became a partner in a successful
Architectural practice. Peter and Anne returned to England in 1977 where they made
their warm and welcoming home in Sevenoaks. Peter volunteered at the Red Cross until
recently when ill health forced him to give it up.
He is dearly missed by his family and all his friends in Singapore and around the world.

Maison Louis Jadot was founded by Louis Henry Denis Jadot in 1859, and has
remained in the family since then. Jadot has its own vineyards and buys grapes
from other growers. It controls 270 hectares (670 acres) of vineyards scattered
across Burgundy. The range is bewildering, from Grand Cru to village wines, but
the quality is consistent and Jadot produces only Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée
(AOC) wines.
We will be tasting a selection of 3 whites from 2012 and 3 reds from 2008/9:
Louis Jadot Chablis 2012

CHAR-GRILLED MAYURA STATION
WAGYU RIBEYE 300G
Marbling: 8-9
buttery mashed potato, lightly grilled romaine,
port wine sauce
$108
Often described as luxury quality beef,
Mayura offers an unrivalled complexity
whilst maintaining great structure and
balance. The cows are grain-fed in excess
of 600 days with a focus on slow growth to
produce beef with very fine texture, to give
the beef a very tender and silky mouthfeel.
Although grain-fed for 600 days, a unique
grain-ration fed to the cattle for the last
120 days includes chocolate and other
well-guarded ingredients to give the beef
a unique and distinguishable flavour that is
sweet, buttery and robust. The high quality
fatty acid profile in Mayura ensures a very
low melting point temperature and makes
sure the marbling is not overpowering but
provides a burst of juiciness on your first bite.

KAMALAYA WELLNESS TALK
How to achieve uninterrupted and restful sleep
Quality sleep is one of the foundational components of
good health, and yet many people have problems
with their sleep patterns. Karina Stewart, Kamalaya cofounder and Master of Traditional Chinese Medicine, talks
about the importance of sleep for our physical, mental
and emotional well-being and shares some simple and
practical tips for overcoming sleep issues or imbalances.
“Make a good eight hours of restful sleep a night
your number one priority!”, says Karina. “It is vital for
prevention, management and treatment of various
health concerns. Nowadays it might be difficult for some
of us to get a full eight hours of sleep on a regular basis,
but we might want to prioritise it once we understand
how important sufficient sleep is for our overall health.”
Join us for this informative wellness talk this September.
Participants will receive a goodie bag which includes a
Kamalaya cookbook. In addition, stand to win a 3-Night

What got you interested in the East and Traditional Chinese
Medicine (TCM)?
From an early age, I have been greatly influenced by my
mother’s interest in natural healing, meditation, yoga and Asian
spiritual philosophies. We grew up with a plant-based diet and
from the age of 14, I began learning meditation and exploring
Asian spiritual philosophies. I later enrolled in Princeton University
and completed a bachelor’s degree in Cultural Anthropology
with a focus on Asian religions. During my Princeton years, I took
a sabbatical year to immerse myself in a meditation retreat
under the tutelage of a Himalayan yogi master. Post-graduation,
my fascination with the East and passion for health led me to
California’s Yo San University, where I received a Master’s degree
in TCM, followed by internships in Japan and China.
What’s TCM about?
TCM is the contemporary version of China's more than 3,000 year
old medical system originating in Taoist philosophy, an ancient
tradition grounded in the recognition of the healing power of
nature and the rhythms and cycles of life to which we are all
connected. It is a comprehensive theoretical system based
on the knowledge that vibrant health on all dimensions is the
direct manifestation of a life lived in harmony with the principles
of nature.
The cycles, rhythms, and principles of nature are thought to be
fully expressed within the human body. Therapies and treatments
used include well-established techniques such as acupuncture,
herbal medicine, massage, nutrition, chi gong and forms of
Chinese internal practices (breath, visualisation and movement)
for cultivating chi or vital energy and directing it towards the
healing of self and others. In Chinese Medicine, energy is believed
to flow along pathways called meridians, and it should flow in
a free and unobstructed way, much like your bloodstream. If it
does not and there is a blockage, disease and pain may result.
Many people in Singapore lead pretty hectic lifestyles. For better
health, what would you recommend?
The first step is to recognise that leading a hectic lifestyle is
not conducive to a better life. So long as we do not have this
awareness, we will not make any changes. Then, the next step is
to slow down. In order to do this we must reduce the amount of
stimulants we consume, such as caffeine. And we must use tools
such as breathing practices, meditation and lifestyle changes
to reset the nervous system from the stress response to the
relaxation response. Finally, get more sleep and make sure it is
high quality sleep – at least 8 hours per night is recommended by
recent research on this important topic.

In today’s multi-media world where many of our children are media and

their children draw lines of their own. Get plugged-in on the why and how to
use the media to pull your family together, rather than let it push you apart.

BOOK OF THE MONTH:
NUMERO ZERO
by Umberto Eco
From the best-selling author of The
Name of the Rose and The Prague
Cemetery, Numero Zero is a novel
about the murky world of media
politics, conspiracy, and murder. A
newspaper committed to blackmail
and
mudslinging,
rather
than
reporting the news. A paranoid editor,
walking through the streets of Milan,
reconstructing fifty years of history
against the backdrop of a plot involving
the cadaver of Mussolini's double.
The murder of Pope John Paul I, the
CIA, red terrorists handled by secret
services, twenty years of bloodshed,
and events that seem outlandish until
the BBC proves them true. A fragile
love story between two born losers, a
failed ghost writer, and a vulnerable
girl, who specialises in celebrity gossip
yet cries over the second movement of
Beethoven’s Seventh. And then a dead
body that suddenly appears in a back
alley in Milan.
Set in 1992 and foreshadowing the
mysteries and follies of the following
twenty years, Numero Zero is a
scintillating take on our times.

Balut-Lawn Bowls Section
This is the bumper issue as we cover May,
a breathless June, and a bit of July.
In the regular May game, Bansi
Sethuraman did her Zen thing and kept
a steady stream of over 100 points per
game to clear the field with her 643 total
score. Annette Hartland's 139 game
score stood till the last game when with
a flick of the wrist, while Zoedb Sadiq put
down a 141 score to take that prize.
In June we had the Section's Annual
General Meeting. This was a good
natured session with the Section being
brought up to date on a year which
saw the Convenorship changing hands
3 times. The session ended with the
outgoing Committee handing over to
the incoming Committee, a round of
thanks and a slap-up meal.
The June game saw a huge turnout, and
after some friendly hoots and hollers.
Anand Menon nabbed the highest total
score with his 636 points. He also had the
highest game score, but in the spirit of
fair play, that went to Gale Creighton for
her 151 score.
Early July saw the return of the Empire
Cup, this time at the British Club. David
Quinn and his merry band put out an
excellent spread, and then kept the cup
after handing out a polite beating. We
decided that the spirit of the game was
so outstanding that the scores were a
mere piffling to mention!
The new Balut Committee comprises of:
G Sethuraman
Nina Menon
David Goh
Fatema Sadiq
Lilian Lee

We host the next round of the Inter-Club,
so there’ll be more on that in the next
issue.

THE INDEFATIGABLE SPIRIT OF OUR LADY LAWN BOWLERS
May was a full schedule month for our Bowlers. The Singles Tournament
was scheduled concurrently with the Doubles Tournament.
The Singles started with a thunderous bang! On the cool Sunday afternoon
of 15 May, while some 12 Bowlers were having their friendlies, our two lady
veteran Bowlers Pecktee and Fatema decided on their Singles battle.
It started well, with a cool breeze waffling through our Lawn Bowls Green,
but a looming storm soon appeared from the southeast. After just 8 ends,
the much dreaded tropical storm descended on us with a vengeance,
and deluged our lawn.
While the mostly male Social Bowlers ran for cover, our 2 indomitable
ladies battled on in the flooded lawn so did their Marker Devi Hodgkinson.
Cheers to our ladies for their tenacious effort! Truly the undying spirit of
Lawn Bowls!
Their game made it to the last point, when the lightning warning sounded
and officially ended all play.

June is a very exciting time at The Tanglin Club. Not only do we
have the election for the new General Committee, but the Sports
& Recreation Sections hold their Annual General Meetings (AGMs)
too. Ours was held on 3 June; we had 19 ladies and 1 gentleman,
Frank Yung, attending. It was a very friendly atmosphere with lots
of questions which our Convenor, Sharon Gray, answered. One
particular one was about the new Standard Operating Procedure
(SOP) which could be viewed online or at the Sports Desk. Sharon
opened the meeting, recounting the highlights of the past year and
what the Sub-Committee is planning for the Members in the future.
There will be a monthly buffet lunch at the Wheelhouse restaurant
from 11.30am to 12.30 prior to a game, held on alternate days of
the week. Also, look out for more social evenings. Additionally, there
will be the Bridge Congress to be held in Kuala Lumpur on 15 & 16
October. We have quite a few pairs who will be going. Please check
the notice board in the Card Room for future events.
Everyone appeared happy and relaxed at the end of the Bridge
AGM and 18 of us proceeded to the Churchill Room for a sumptuous
dinner with delectable wine. When the band struck up a waltz, we all
got onto the dance floor and pulled Frank and Captain Ho to dance
PAGE 35 THE TANGLIN CLUB
with us. We had such a lovely time with Lily entertaining
us with her jokes as well.
On 17 June, we had our summer bridge. This is always
a very popular event with our Section Members as well
as guests. We had 46 players turning up and the theme
was ‘Summer White’. We thank Aziz and the staff for
organising the room, with beautifully laid out tables
and linen for our lunch. We had a buffet of Thai food
which everyone enjoyed before beginning our bridge
session. Some of the hands were rather challenging.
Warmest congratulations to the winners. Coming in first
for North-South were Jyoti Singh and Deepa Gupta,
and second were Rohini Arya and Anu Sehgal. Coming
in first for East-West were Kavita Butalia and second Pat
Schneider and Jan Firth. Last but not least, a big thank
you to everyone for coming to support this event and
not forgetting our Convenor, Sharon, who generously
donated the beautiful white flowers.

The Tanglin Choir with Choir Master Albert Tay
Have you ever noticed how good you feel after singing along to
your favourite song on the radio or singing out loudly in the shower?
Singing is in our genes and in human nature. That urge to break into
a song or to hear others sing is an inherent part of us. But many of
us choose not to sing as we feel we lack musical ability. Although,
we have all, at some point of time in our lives must have sung – as
children in school assemblies, instinctively along to the radio in the
car, or hummed or whistled to a tune.
Singing acts as a conduit to mindfulness, by keeping us completely
focused on the present and the melody and the emotions that it
evokes. If you have ever sung (even discreetly), you should seriously
consider taking this raw vocal skill to new heights.
And a good way to get started is to join a group or a choir. Being part
of a chorus provides a support system, and a chance to sing different
genres, meet people who share similar interest, and perform.

DARTS ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2016
The Darts Annual General Meeting was held on 11 June
2016. Members enjoyed a delicious Chinese Dinner in the
newly refurbished Raffles Room. It was an evening filled
with fine dining, wine accompanied by graceful dancing,
songs and music. Thank you MC Cheong for serenading
the diners with the song ‘My Way’ popularised by Frank
Sinatra.
MC Cheong remained as the unopposed Convener
for the year 2016. He introduced the new Committee
Members with much enthusiasm. They are Lilian
Lee, Nancy Chua, Eunice Goh, Nancy Ee, Sepalika
Kumarasinghe, David Goh, William Ee and Fong Keng
Yeow. The Darts Section is immensely delighted to have
enthusiastic, harmonious Members in the Committee.
The Convener also designated relevant positions to
each Member of the Committee, to ensure the smooth,
effective functioning of the activities of the Section. The
Treasurer Fong Keng Yeow then, presented the Financial
Report for the year 2016. He went through the details
of the Section Fund, Club Match Subsidy Fund, and
Upcoming Events.
The lucky draws attributed to the fun and enjoyment of
the night and most of the Members walked away happily
with bottles of wine and gifts.
Finally, I would like to thank Members of our Committee
and the Sports and Recreation Staff, Cielito Visitacion
and James Soh, for making the event so meaningful and
rewarding.

THE TANZA
In keeping with the Sub-Committee's initiative of choosing different days of the week and different times to play, 20 players,
including 14 men and 6 lady golfers, in teams of two, started at 7.49am on Tuesday, 7 June at Orchid Country Club to try and
win back The Tanza. This trophy is played for between The Tanglin Club and The Australia New Zealand Association (ANZA).
The format for the event was Better Ball Matchplay, and ten matches were played on a glorious morning. ANZA, as hosts,
had chosen Orchid as most of their players have a regular weekly round at the course. Playing conditions were excellent
as the ANZA players used their local
knowledge to full advantage, with
four of their players in different flights
scoring rounds which would have
been the equivalent of net 64 had it
been a stroke play event.
Given the strength of the opposition,
it was with great credit that our
Convenor David White with Amos
Manasseh, Philip Rossiter and Paul
D'Souza managed victories in their
matches. Sadly the other 8 matches
went to ANZA who gets to keep the
trophy for another year.
Despite the loss, all the matches were
played in the best spirit of golf. A
delicious lunch was served after the
game, offering the opportunity to
reflect on the morning's events and
share a beer with a most hospitable
ANZA team.

FRIENDLY COMPETITION:
SINGAPORE RECREATION CLUB & THE TANGLIN CLUB
Competitions are meant for us to improve our game and to pit
our skill against others. This was certainly the case at our Ten-Pin
Bowling Section’s friendly competition with the bowlers at Singapore
Recreation Club (SRC) on Tuesday, 5 July 2016.
The SRC’s location being right in the heart of town made it easy for
the majority of us to get there though MC who, as usual, ran a carpick up from the Club. Altogether, eight bowlers represented our
Club: MC Cheong, Nancy Chua, Pamela Daswani, Akiko Kristiansen,
Mylinh, Andrew Pua, Frederick Francis, Lee Tian Ahn, Josephine Chia
and Magdalene Apps.
The bowlers at SRC greeted us very warmly and their Convenor, Ms
Tang Whai Yih, thanked our Club graciously for hosting the buffet
dinner. Our hosts were very professional, friendly, helpful and truly
inspiring. Several of them had their top scores engraved on the boards
in the reception area of the bowling alley! So we knew we were in
for a stiff competition. And yet, they were not arrogant and gave us
good tips.
The fact that they have their own bowling alley and thus are able
to practise regularly showed when the games started as they were
elegant in their technique. Nonetheless, our team gave a good fight,
especially Members like Pamela and Tian Ahn who were our top
scorers in the Ladies’ and Men’s groups respectively.
It was inevitable that the SRC bowlers would win the competition. Their
top scorer, Vincent Yuan, easily turned in a neat total points of 762
in the Men’s section for the four games, whilst Grace Mah won the
Ladies’ section with 654 points. Nevertheless, we all had a lot of fun as
the atmosphere was so convivial. Before we left, Whai Yih suggested
that we meet again for a game in October. That just goes to show
how much they enjoyed having us bowl with them!

LEAGUE
One of Sam's legacies has been the quarterly Birthday Bash one-day
tournament which has occurred on a Saturday every other month. We had a
large turnout once again in June and matches were played right down to the
final Spoon Match (where a certain adult Section Member was soon elbowing
a certain Junior Member out of the way on tie-break match point, on court
etiquette too vulgar to discuss any further!).
For those interested in playing in the
Inter-club Cosmo League, which is a
handicapped and very social league,
please let Max at Sports & Recreation
know.
Also, Vinny "Championship Squash" Lam
encourages all Members to participate in
the Singles Box League.
UPCOMING EVENTS
• Next Birthday Bash
– Saturday, 10 September
• Pot Games – Saturday, 1 October
• Kimpton Cup Finals – Saturday, 22 October
• Presidents Cup
– Thursday to Sunday, 23 to 26 February

Tennis Section
TENNIS SUB-COMMITTEE 2016/17
The new Sub-Committee for 2016/17 has been voted in. As yet, there has been
no decision amongst the Sub-Committee Members on their respective roles
and responsibilities as yet, but I believe this is a team that is forward looking
and going to serve the best interests of the entire tennis-playing community at
Tanglin.
The Tennis Annual General Meeting (AGM) saw over 50 Section Members in
attendance, and they voted for 8 of the 11 who put their hand up to serve
on the Sub-Committee. At the AGM, I shared the previous Sub-Committee's
mandate and what we've achieved the past year, including: the new oncourt furniture, tennis wall, and change to seating and lounge design outside
court 5. More importantly, there was a discussion surrounding accountability
and ensuring that no single Sub-Committee Member wields enough power
to make decisions on his/her own, without consultation or documentation of
decisions. I'd like to thank the 2015/16 Sub-Committee for their dedication and
commitment to the task at hand.
Your new Tennis Sub-Committee comprises of Lilian Lum, Leong Shieh Yen, Soo
Kui Jien, Renato Sirtori, Roland Tan, Magdalene Tan, Lance Chu and me. We're
subject to General Committee approval, of course.
BRAND NEW LIGHTS
Both our indoor courts are now fully
equipped with LED lights. They are
designed to be brighter, and save the
Club a fair bit of money on electricity
bills. Hopefully, we'll be able to fund the
outdoor courts with better lights soon!
