Normal programming shall now resume - the thunder rolls in once more. A bike versus a car? Hardly seems fair... the bike’s only got two wheels. 06 Welcome to Urban RacR Magazine Online Issue 17. Even though most of us already have our own cars we just can’t help looking at what else there is on the market and what the person next to you is driving. The Renault Megane RS may not be to everybody’s liking but it certainly does deserve a second look. As a new car option it is definitely a strong contender even though it’s French (LOL!). Even if you are looking at a used car a VW Polo comes highly recommended as a wellrounded car. With so many tuning and customising options available to us nowadays it is relatively easy to make your car stand out from the rest. Our events coverage includes a very well-attended breakfast run by the Honda peeps in Johannesburg, a track day at Killarney (farming anybody?), and the adrenalin-filled Saldanha Drags. It seems that all these types of events are sure to attract the popo as they try to fill their treasure chests. I know of numerous spectators who were taxed on their way to and from these events. Mutha F*ckers! Please enjoy the show and pop in anytime on urbanracr.co.za for updates and FREE magazines. Urban Drives: NEW RENAULT MEGANE COUPE - RS250 newr ca view re 12 When chilling around the braai debating the hottest hatch backs fighting for the title of king of the street, its always the same manufacturer who unfairly gets the short end of the stick. Renault. Maybe it's because of their terrible service reputation or the unusual, unwarranted dislike of Fench cars, but even with great success in Formula One and unrivaled success with their RS Renaultsport cars such as the 'go-kart-like' Clio and 'golfchallenging' Megane - each sublime handlers, Renault fail to get kudos. Fuck that, just look at this. 13 “urbanracr.co.za” “ Low slung and futuristic, the new Megane RS is only available in coupe form - as it should be. Gone is that unmistakable but ungainly ass of its predecessor. That means the new RS is less of a hot hatch and now aspiring to true sports car status with this slipperier profile. It's quick and, as you can see from these photos, dead sexy too. What you cannot see however, is the noise that 14 When it comes to hot hatches Renault always draws the short end of the stick - no more fills the cabin under hard acceleration. Deep with induction roar, with just a slight amount of that erratic crackling and spitting of a turbo car – the Megane RS is a hoot to drive. Punch the gas, feel the front end squirm, snatch second, same thing – third, repeat till you're staring at 200kph, it's never been easier, or more fun. Torque steer is clearly evident but never enough to worry the driver, in fact you'll enjoy the extra communication from the car. Inside things are just as racy with yellow stitching and detailing everywhere including a yellow set of analogue dials. A pity then that the seats are difficult to get comfy in. They feel too damn high and never allow you close enough to the tarmac to really feel cosseted in the leathery cabin. But that really is our one small critic on one fantastic car. We can't wait till the final quarter of 2010 to drive one on SA roads. Signal Hill has long been a favourite destination amongst car-loving Capetonians. 17 “urbanracr.co.za” pictures and words by: raees amien The Crimson 18 German The VW Polo GTI has become a firm favourite for racers around the country. Its small body with its powerful 1.8T motor makes it a pocket rocket of note. Andre Calvert's Polo is one special example though. He previously had a sweet MK1 Golf but when this car was released, he decided it was time for an upgrade. Andre currently works as a mechanic as cars are his passion, amongst other things. He is quite the speed freak as he owned a Yamaha racing 19 “urbanracr.co.za” bike which was recently sold. He bought his car two years ago and only a week after owning it did he start tuning it. The car was dropped 55mm in front and 45mm at the rear. He opted for H&R springs as he felt this was the best option for his need, the need for speed. The brake pads have been changed to Ferodo as it helps with his style of driving – handling on the limit. He then added a sick set of SSW lightweight rims, wrapped in Dunlop tyres, which really set it apart from any other Polo. The rims have since been upgraded to BBS replicas that have been painted red with a chrome lip. This gives the car a racy yet show car look. The car looks like a race ready beast but he wasn't satisfied yet. He added front splitters and painted the roof matt black. The rear bumper has been sprayed red with black. He decided no body kit was needed as all the little mods did the trick for him. He opted for a red car as it symbolises speed and is an 20 21 easy colour to work with when changing bits on your car. This car really looks aggressive now prowling the road and definitely stands out in the crowded Cape Town Polo crowd. The outside of the car complements the stock interior very well. Since Andre is all about speed he decided to leave the interior stock. The standard seats suit the car very well with its chequered material. Future plans are to add racing seats and a grippier steering wheel. The engine also received some attention with a Powerflow exhaust and ECU upgrade. This helped a lot with power and as a bonus the car has a more aggressive sound once the power kicks in. A bigger intercooler was added which also gave the car extra power but is a big help with keeping the turbos cool. He is currently running 0.6 bar boost. This may not sound like much but in this car it does the job convincingly. The rest of the engine is standard as he didn't want to 22 “ “urbanracr.co.za” He decided no body kit was needed as all the little mods did the trick for him 23 “urbanracr.co.za” CALL MOTORLEASE FINANCE lose the reliability of the car. The gearbox is a standard 6 speed but the clutch will soon be uprated to a sportier unit as the man's propensity for performance. Future plans are to add bigger turbos, bigger pistons and a stronger manifold. Andre's Polo is without doubt a special one – serving as an excellent example of what can be achieved just by pushing the envelope on OEM style modifying. We will be keeping tabs on the car and keeping you updated. 24 01 Tel: 021 715 7182 Fax: 021 712 2191 A/H: Rohan 083 586 5126 Leonie 073 286 0381 www.motorlease.co.za There’s only one way to achieve a power stance like this - slam it to the deck! I’ve brung it! Only it’s a rusty old Ginsu. PREPPY, PREPPITY… PREP. There’s a bunch of things you should do before attempting a track day. I did none of it. Also, there’s a condition your car should be in before risking 60 minutes of lapping in a 27 year old car you bought in bad nick to begin with. I was having none of that neither. Since I took delivery of my Supie I’ve done a service, replaced the exhaust at Joe’s Radiators in Retreat, replaced the induction and lastly taken it to the Wheelman aka Ernest from OPD in Ottery for a dyno tune via the Dicktator management. The standard car made 107kW with the 5M-GE in 1983, no surprise then mine only managed 91 – Ernie quickly got this back up to 102kW with torque at 195Nm – similar figures to my old Astra. Being an ex-scrutineer, Ernie quickly set about checking for the usual gremlins that climb into a road setup and also fashioned ‘McGyver-style’ a top notch battery bracket. And that was enough to get me through the scrutineers the next day at the track which is where the shirt would go down. Killarney, five turns a turning. 27 “urbanracr.co.za” RACE DAY Yes, in all fairness whilst I have never raced before I have done over 50 laps of Killarney due to previous track days and vehicle testing and so, entering the first (novice) group might seem a bit unfair. But believe me, under me was a car that I was a total novice in – having honed what little quick-driving experience I have predominantly in front wheel drive cars. Besides, it was almost definitely going to disintegrate on the first corner. But it didn’t. When the marshall dropped her hand and released me onto the track it was all systems go – I dropped the clutch, revved her just enough for a smooth-ish pull off and we exploded onto the 28 track in full six cylinder glory. The old Toyota sounded great *cough* never mind that smoke, ‘tis normal in a sports car (bull shirt). Second gear, third gear, firm on the brakes as turn one loomed. Scanning, scanning, scanning the turn until it opened up and “Wham!” the induction spits out a beautifully truncated exhaust note as I boot it on exit and the back shimmies around as much as a 1.5 ton, 100kW missile may muster. Turn two is a way off, so it’s a shift into fourth, a nice piece of acceleration and then back onto the brakes, and it’s third gear, still braking, second is selected *pop* “Damn, forgot about that” and I hold it in as I oversteer through the first half of the turn. With a hint of oppo lock on exit the engine is singing in second. Third gear, navigate the mild ‘right-left’ chicane as a straight and then into third. Turn three in on me and a mild stab at the brake is all she needs to scrub off enough pace and line me up for a high speed corner. I snatch at fouth gear and turn four, the double right hander looms, looking scarier than I remember it. An S2000 has come into view. What the frock? We blast out onto the back straight together and he pulls strongly away. Bastard, my power deficit was looking chasmlike now. Still, he is new to this and I’m capitalizing on his super early braking on turn five. Damnit, I just remember the WPMC’s Paul Simon telling us that we’re not 29 “urbanracr.co.za” allowed to overtake on bends, just on straights – and here’s me in a rusty, power-starved banger. We exit tightly and the main straight is ahead. Shirt! and my rust bucket managed to pass a few Fords and a 2.0T A3 before trouble struck. Seems its Achilles heel would be cooling, the single fan on the tiny radiator was not enough despite leaving He opens another gap but not as the fan switched on permanently. convincingly as last time – turn She could only do five laps at a five’s seemingly odd line (high on time. I pulled in and its watery the bowl till exit) unsettles fluids spilled across the pit lane. newbies (well it unsettled me) My brother in law, Shaheed, is and that might be why I’m next to handier than I when it comes to the 177kW Honda. A smoky pull wrench work, which is why I’m down the straight (no I have no grateful he was there to help me idea how fast, my speedometer… try to patch it for the next session errrr, no worky) and there are but alas we could only manage now two S2000s less than 50m one lap before more of the same. ahead of me as we enter turn one We skipped the third session once more. “Must not overtake on focusing on the fourth by refilling corner” he said! They’re dawdling the reservoir via copious plastic in the middle of the track, I take bottles of H20 until we were the outside and cut between suitably topped up and cooled off. them to kiss the apex (pretty sweet maneuver actually *pats Five more laps was all we could back*) and I exit a ball’s hair muster, with Shaheed in behind them but on the right bit of passenger seat (Sitting level now the track and pin the throttle to I dare say) but they were quality the foot well while I presume they stuff – unfortunately not quite as continued to “free wheel in glorified as the first session but fourth”. The rest of the first now we have a base to work from session continued the same way and a bearing knock. 30 Oh that’s right, a bearing knock has come into effect in that last run – seems I was a bit stubborn. Poor cooling coupled with an unbuffled sump means it might be time to open her up. It’s a bittersweet thing really, but I’m going to look at it as a reason to ‘modify’. Saturday I’ll be pulling her through to OPD once more, and the diagnosis can be made. I’m thinking pistons, rods, crank cash? Either way, proud. PS: Thanks to all those that pitched to show support, too many to mention but y’all know who you are. 31 “urbanracr.co.za” PORSCHE 911 locally SPOTTED MERCEDES SLS That’s right - Merc’s new gullwing supercar has been spotted in Caledon by two eagle eyed Urban readers. Not only could one can see the pride in the Honda drivers' eyes, but the passengers as well. At our first meeting place in Boksburg we stood chatting about B20s, EG6s, EK9s, and every other Honda imaginable. 34 As it came time to leave, the excitement on the faces of the drivers was indescribable. Once we had finally decided on a route and who would lead and who would follow, we were off; this was not a race, but a chance to show off our vehicles at their best. As we neared our second meeting place at Northgate, at the highway turnoff, we were greeted by a group of Honda fans with cameras, video cameras, cellphone cameras; it felt like a movie. In this movie, neither the drivers nor the passengers were the stars. No, the real stars were the cars themselves. Once at our second meeting place; it resembled a Honda dealership with an amazing range of models and colours. Then it was time to get on the road again to our final destination and by now it was clear this was most 35 “urbanracr.co.za” definitely a parade and all about “Honda pride”. been held up by traffic and road works. We got to our destination to find many cars already there. What On the road it was not difficult an awesome sight; fathers taking to see why people own their children around to see all the Hondas; not only the people in cars; wives and girlfriends walking the convoy but people on the around and talking about the cars as road too. Many times Hondas if they were a part of the family. would just join in the convoy if There wasn't just one of each type only for a few kilometres, if of Honda but a few, all different and only to feel a part of something unique in their own special way, all great. Many of the members in with one thing in common, the “H” the Honda Racing Club have badge. The atmosphere was even fast cars, but it was incredible more intense than the beginning of to see these speed machines the day, with pride oozing out of the joined by stock vehicles, drivers and every one else that was awesome people in awesome lucky enough to join in. These above-mentioned traffic officials are rife on the highways both day and night but thankfully, the guys out on the West Coast have the solution. This little baby should be sideways! Yes, it's not just a place where guys go to catch fish; the municipality there are quite friendly towards us peeps in need of adrenalin rushes, well, except for my buddy who got a R500 fine for not displaying a front number plate (Ed - Rumour has it that the fine was Waanie’s fault). Easter weekend is now synonymous to Saldanha Top End Drags at the Saldanha Air Strip. This time around it was hosted by the West Coast Motorsport guys headed up by Jerome, Esrar and Moederick. Though the number of entrants racing on the day was less than usual, many of those who had entered online did not pitch up. It was their loss though, as we got more races in with some entrants completing six runs. 39 “urbanracr.co.za” Mazda’s 323 just doesn’t get the respect it deserves - but it will now thanks to this citrus example The silver Lotus Exige which ran on the day completed its first run at an astonishing 239km/h over the 800metres marker before the oil pipe from the turbo connected to its 4 cylinder Honda engine popped loose and set the engine bay alight. No major damage was sustained as the fire was promptly put out. The Exige was very quickly repaired and returned to the strip. “Suspect” unfortunately suffered from fuelling problems on the day, with the fuel pump struggling to supply enough fuel for both the supercharger and full 40 nitrous requirements. He did manage to come back and clock in at 220km/h with a wee bit of the laughing gas before the gates were closed off for the final runs of the day. Shamiel finally granted me, and the rest of the crowd, the pleasure of seeing his beautifully-built monster of a slant front Toyota showing just how much business he means even on his first run with 216km/h and later on 231km/h. The fastest speeds of the day were naturally set by the bikes, with the fastest clocking in at 270km/h. The West Coast wind once again acted up making it 41 “urbanracr.co.za” The Citi R Line as piloted by exeditor Waanie difficult for those naturally aspirated vehicles (like mine) to show their true worth. Others found that too much power proved unreliable. We were looking forward to seeing quite a few records broken by the contenders, but alas, many were unable to do so whilst others had to go home early with their tails between their legs. I can tell you this; you had best prepare your cars for September as rumour has it we'll be out at Saldanha again for some more top end drags. This time don't forget to advance the timing for the higher octane fuel... the 10 and 11 second cars kept the crowds on their feet 42 T EVEN 43 “urbanracr.co.za” Cars: Shaheen’s SUSPECT Lumina and WTF: Saldanha 800m Drags 44 “ Combined, this unlikely pair are running Bugatti Veyron-scaring amounts of power and torque - not bad for a humble Chevy and Toyota 45 ART Alspeed Racing Technology n Turbo Modifications Goodhope Tyres n Supercharger Modifications n Engine Management n Serial Port Programming Widest Range of Rims and Tyres DARWIN RACING n Custom Exhausts n Nitrous Oxide Installations n Nitrous Tank Refills n Brake Upgrades n Engine Diagnostics n Custom Alarm Installations n Vehicle Servicing & Repairs Corner of Kromboom and Lawrence Road, Athlone, Cape Town, Tel: (021) 697 1920 FREE WHEEL ALIGNMENT CHECK!
