2016 April NuLu Newsletter
Issue #12 │ April 2016 E-news of the NuLu Business Association BOCK BEER FEST BY RICK MURPHY Spring in NuLu. Spring is in the air. Literally, for those who suffer from pollen allergies. Like bourbon, baseball bats and great horses, we are known for producing some of the world’s highest levels of pollen. BUSINESS ASSOCIATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS After this past weekend, it also appears that we have an unusually high level of ability for producing great street festivals and attracting people to the neighborhood, despite that environmental nuisance that often accompanies our spring weather. President Gill Holland Vice President Rick Murphy Secretary Karen Page Treasurer Bud Simmons With warm spring temperatures and blue skies overhead, the NuLu Bock Beer Festival drew huge crowds to try the special bock beers produced by ten different members of the Kentucky Guild of Brewers and to watch goat racing provided by the Louisville Aggies 4-H group. While we anticipated there would be significant interest in the goats and the unique and rarely available bock style beer, we were indeed surprised and elated by the overwhelming popularity of the event and exposure of the NuLu neighborhood to thousands of people including many first time visitors. With the NCAA tournament in town for the weekend, there were not only visiting fans but the festival was covered by television and radio crews from Philadelphia and Kansas City that were here to cover the games. Some links to those stories and videos appear below. While working beer ticket sales, we were checking ID’s and talking to visitors. Driver’s licenses from dozens of states, as far away as Hawaii, and passports from several foreign countries, were presented as means of identification. It certainly attests to the power of social media and our ability to reach and attract people to the neighborhood for this type of special event. Many positive comments and likes were posted on social media about the event but what really excited us were reports from several retailers and restaurants that they saw record sales for the day. The festival also produced additional income for the Association to help us continue to effectively promote the NuLu brand and our member businesses. Board Members Gordon Brown, Mike Maloney, Bill Marzian, Chuck Swanson, Trudy Miller, Phil Dearner, Joyce Garner, Jeff Rawlings, Scott Howe, Rebecca Matheny. Newsletter Editor Autumn Lucas Meetings are held in the Parish Hall of St. John United Church of Christ on the 2nd Wednesday of every month (629 East Market Street) WANT TO JOIN THE NULU BUSINESS ASSOCIATION? $100 Businesses │ $50 Non-Profit Organizations │ $25 Individuals/Resident For more information, please contact Phil Dearner: [email protected] The NuLu Business Association would like to thank all of the festival sponsors, the many volunteers, participating neighborhood businesses, the Kentucky Guild of Brewers, the Louisville Aggies and Ina Marcella Events for their help in making the day a huge success. In 2008, Pusztai helped his mother move out of the family house and into an apartment; she could no longer manage the house on her own. It was all she could do just to walk away from all the things. The job of resolving the house contents, accumulated over long lives of thrift and sentiment and care, fell entirely to Pusztai. "To me it looked like a limitless sea of junk, but worse, a field sown with little emotional landmines... to try to make sense of the assault of emotions, I did what any artist might do: I aestheticised the experience. Thousands of photos, then and over the course of the next few years... take a photo, and let the object go." A new fast casual Vietnamese restaurant is coming to Louisville. Pho Ba Luu will open in the soon-to-be-renovated Butcherblock Properties, located at 1009–1019 East Main Street, sometime this summer. The nine-building complex that anchors the crossing where Wenzel, East Main, and East Washington Streets all intersect in Butchertown is the perfect space for the 2,200 sq. ft. modern eatery. Andy Blieden, along with Pho Ba Luu partners, is transforming the cinderblock building that features 13-ft. bays, and once housed a service station, into a 75-seat dining destination located at 1019 East Main Street. An outdoor patio will provide an al fresco experience with an additional 40 seats. The menu will include Vietnamese staples like chicken or beef pho and several varieties of banh mi, plus imperial rolls, spring rolls, vermicelli bowls with the choice of a protein, and a few other entree options like chicken curry with coconut milk rice bowls and shaken beef rice bowls. All of the dishes, including entrees, fresh bread, and desserts, will be made in house. Beer, both draft and bottles, and wine will also be offered. The concept has been a dream for several of the partners for more than a year now. It has just been within the last 6 months that Mimi Ha and Jessica Mach have been able to bring their culinary dream to reality as the perfect location became available and the perfect developer was added to the team. "I've been blessed to be part of August Moon for over 25 years,” says Ha, Managing Partner of August Moon and Partner Consultant of Pho Ba Luu. “It's so exiting to now collaborate with Jessica on the food of my childhood with our new venture together. We have had so much fun the past several months fully developing the Pho Ba Luu concept." Mimi will continue in her role at August Moon moving forward, and will work with Jessica simultaneously as they get the new concept off the ground. Pho Ba Luu will be open 7 days a week from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Updates and grand opening information will be released as they become available.
