Peter Physick President 5 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK PRESIDENT’S REPORT Peter Physick Not sure just where one starts to describe the last 16 months. The 2014 Year Book did not carry any commentary as to the difficulties the Sydney Hills Eagles Football Club found itself in midway during last year. In short the Club was deeply in debt and continuing to compete in the NEAFL was clearly unsustainable. In fact, whether it could continue to trade at all was yet to be determined. The AFL were informed and a working party was quickly put together to determine the full extent of the damage. The people who comprised that initial group were genuinely shocked as to how bad the situation appeared on the surface, but once the full extent of the problem had been evaluated and analysed, some serious soul searching was needed. The footy club, regardless of what it was called, was near death and the easiest path to take was to simply close it down. However that would have brought separate complex problems into the equation, both legally and morally. The latter, to be honest, carried more weight than anything else. Sure, the club was only 15 years old but it had been such a labour of love by so many people to get it to where it had won three successive premierships, that to destroy it now would border on criminal neglect. Besides AFL footy needed a strong senior club in our geographical region. After many deep breaths and meetings the decision was taken to give it a go. The following were the not negotiables in order to make it work: • • • • • • • • The existing Board must stand down The Club would return to its founding name of East Coast Eagles The Club would withdraw its First Grade side from the NEAFL and seek permission to return it to the AFL Sydney Premier Division competition A commercial loan of $150,000 would be sought, 100% of which would be used to pay back 37.5% of the existing debt Long term payment arrangements must be secured with those creditors whose debts could not be paid in one hit The income budget must rise by 250% The expenditure budget in 2015 would reduce by 70% New corporate sponsors must be found. Their income would be used to fund all operating expenses for season 2015 and to meet the ongoing debt reduction program. Quite a list of massive self-imposed conditions. A new Board was elected at an Extraordinary AGM held on 27/08/14 comprising of three people who were utterly committed to the cause and resurrection of the Eagles. The Club should always be indebted to Jon Gawley and Richard Lee who willingly accepted my request to join me in forming the new Board, which was assisted at that time by Chris Baddock as our advisor. In early January, once some business hurdles had been overcome, the Board was honoured to welcome Rodney Frost to the team and then in the months to follow, David Arndt and Paul Meyer. Thousands of hours were spent by this group in the precise planning of how the whole transformation would occur and the subsequent ongoing execution of those plans. Although Richard strategically stepped down from the Board at the AGM in March to allow succession planning to commence, he was not lost to the club as you will read on page 25 in this Year Book. 6 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK Our sponsor partners are well documented on page 10. These companies provided the financial lifeline the Board needed and we are truly indebted to each and every one of them. Importantly, the people behind these companies are now personal friends and they have learned to love the Eagles and AFL football. Many had never seen a game of our code before in their lives. Of all the stories in the saga of the Eagles, the acquisition of our new sponsor partners is perhaps the most heart-warming. To have a footy club, you must have players. We are indebted to the work done by Michael Sankey, Rodney Frost and Jon Vlatko who set about the task of retaining as many of the NEAFL playing list as possible. Given the parameters set by the Board it would not be easy, but to the credit of these three men, 11 of the top 25 NEAFL players stayed with the Club. Of these, seven were East Coast players anyway who played in one or more of the 09, 10, 11 Premierships. To players in all grades, I say a heartfelt thanks for the manner in which you played your part in the restoration of East Coast. The Board had no set targets for any on field results from any of the grades. We were just thrilled that there were four teams playing footy. The Premier Division side excelled throughout the minor round, but as we now know they fell at the last hurdle on Grand Final day. A crushing blow? Not at all. Certainly one which hurt at the time for everybody, but to get to where we did was truly remarkable. Our Volunteers and supporters …. What can I say! You rallied to action when the trumpet sounded and pitched in like never before. Rodney Frost has written a wonderful story about you that begins on page 28 and you deserve every credit imaginable. Our “Back to Baulko” day was an extraordinary success with 2,000 people, maybe more, at the ground. The catering folk were run off their feet, but as always “Dickie’s team” held true. He talks about that on page 15. A very special mention from me goes to a group of guys who have a foot in three camps. They play footy for our team in Division Three, they volunteer for anything that’s going and once they populate the Eagles’ Nest at home games next to the scoreboard, they become legendary supporters for Premier Division. 2015 was a year where the objective was purely for us to stay alive and compete in community footy again. Given the circumstances, I’m of the view that we did that pretty well. But it was at the expense of attention being given to future development. We have now addressed that shortcoming for 2016 and beyond. Michael Sankey (Premier), John Hupfeld (U19), Matt O’Connor (Reserve grade) and Matty Mack (Third grade) have already been appointed to their coaching roles. In addition Peter Steer becomes our Director of Coaching to oversee all coaching activities with special concentration on our revamped U19 program with John and his staff. An enormous effort has already been put in over the last three weeks to ensure a constant influx of talented juniors to the Eagles over future years. Our 2016 sponsorship program is all but complete with six of our seven premium sponsors locked in, plus we are talking to other companies who wish to partner East Coast in our continuing quest to regain former glory. When the 2016 fixture is finalised we will very quickly build our social program around it and advise all members and fans through our Social media outlets. The events we held this year were outstanding and you can be assured that with your help they will be bigger and better across the next 12 months. When I walked around Kanebridge Oval on match days, it was so evident that our initial decision to give it a go was the right one. To have not made an attempt would have been negligent. It wasn’t only my eyes that told me what was happening; I could feel the atmosphere and excitement, in fact almost reach out and touch it. Even the Eagle burgers just smelt better. People were smiling, they were happy. Crowds were way up. Simone Francké, our delightful grounds person from Council, kept the complex in better nick than ever before. Everything worked. We had people to fix them if they failed. It was just so cool to be at the local footy on the best ground in Sydney football. I just couldn’t imagine what I would be doing otherwise ……. Judging by everyone’s input this year, I just may not be alone in those thoughts. Laima ….. thank you for your eternal support and encouragement for me to do what I do, day in day out. 7 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK FINANCIAL Jon Gawley I will start this off by saying what a difference a year makes. There are still some final movements to be made for this Financial Year which actually ends tonight, October 31st. The 2015 Financial Year saw the new Board come into action with a major problem which was a massive loss from the previous year that had to be carefully managed. During the early months of planning , careful and constructive thought was given to provide the Club with not only a budget, but an accurate budget which we could aim for. A lot of positives have come from the 2015 season with the canteen in particular coming back in with numbers not seen since back in the old East Coast years of 2009-10-11. These figures have been truly remarkable and a credit to the Catering team led by Richard and Colleen Lee. Turnover from the canteen before expenses exceeded the $40k mark and this was aided again by the dynamic, never aging duo of Ron (who turns 80 next year) and Barbara Heathcote who manned a BBQ which, as per always, was “fit for a king”. Between the above people budgets were managed and targets beaten, so a great effort there. Sponsorship revenue has come back with a bang as well following the rebranding back to East Coast and some great team efforts by the Board. New and old sponsors were targeted from whom we have got a great new source of actual income to support the day to day operations of the Football Club. Another exciting initiative has been our Fighting Fund where much needed funds were required to pay off our 10 year commercial loan. Some great support has been given here which resulted in us being able to pay year one of our debt early in the season and well before the due date. This source of income is vital and allows other revenue streams to cover the week to week running expenses of the Club. The NAB Introducer program has been heavily promoted this season allowing members and supporters to be able to take a mortgage with NAB and also give funds back to the Club. This has resulted in above budget targets being met and an extra income stream generated. There is already a strong pipeline of new support for the 2016 season which is encouraging. With income coming in at a lot better rate than in the previous NEAFL era, one thing which we have done is manage expenses carefully. Some tough calls have been made which understandably at times raised queries. It has been a very challenging 12 months where the expenses have had to be managed and we will continue to do so on an ongoing basis. Special credit must go out to the playing group who stuck by the footy club when massive reductions were necessary. I was very proud to complete all owed payments on time during the season, unlike the year prior. Whilst we have come a long way, there is always room for improvement. One thing is for certain support is way up, and the Club has a club feel about it again. Things will get better and better with continued discipline and planning in the years to come. 8 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK 2016 is another season, with its challenges and hard work still required, however we are in a much better position now than 12 months ago. We have a club and we will get better again. I urge all members and supporters to come to the AGM on December 7th at the Fiddler where a comprehensive report on the financials and where we have come from will be tabled. A special thank you too must go out too Carolyn Canda who is our book keeper. She has been with us right through this journey and is truly amazed by what we have done. I thank you Carolyn for sticking with us and your continued support of our club. Lastly I need to really thank two special ladies. My beautiful Kristy and my daughter Summer. This last year has been very taxing on time. My wife has had a very tough run with her health, but she has been nothing other than supportive of my goal to make our club strong again. There have been so many hours away and time on the phone speaking, texting or emailing the other Board members, or the AFL. It really takes its toll and you need family support, so thank you Kristy for allowing me to have my dream, outside of our dream. To Summer, who waves bye to me when I put on my Polo to go to “Putball” as she calls it, thanks for being a special girl. I will hopefully have another 20-30 years left in this club too now as “Little Jonny” will be with us before the start of 2016 season. 9 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK OUR MOST VALUED SPONSORS Jon Gawley 2015 has seen the rebirth of the Eagles. Coming back to a name which was branded and envied in Sydney football has certainly helped garner the support of new sponsors and past ones from prior years. And 2016 has had a great start with most, if not all 2015 Partners committing again for next year, which is just brilliant. This year the Club undertook some massive transformations on the field which you can read about in the various reports within this Year Book. Big changes occurred off the field too and in 2015 we welcomed the following: Vesta Homes, led by owner and founder Joe Satar and Sam Ahvazi, were not only brand new to East Coast, but to the game of AFL football as well. The boys from Vesta have fitted in so well with the Eagles including being initiated to the Nest!! They love the game day experience and we thank them sincerely for their support and look forward to having Vesta Homes on the back of our football jumpers for many years to come. Kanebridge Oval…. Does it ring a bell? Kanebridge Limited came on board in 2015 by signing a three year agreement to become the first ever ground naming rights sponsor of the oval within Bruce Purser Reserve. Managing director Marwan Rahme, a local developer and passionate sports follower jumped at the opportunity when asked to become involved. This year would have been so much harder without Kanebridge’s initial support. Marwan raised the stakes even further during the year when he took the opportunity to promote The Hugh, their new Apartment complex in Withers Road at “Back to Baulko” day. Several units were sold on the day and additional funds were donated back to the Club as a result. Marwan still has some years on his deal and Kanebridge will be around for a lot longer he assures us. Thank you Marwan, Thank you Kanebridge and your team for your partnership with the Eagles. www.issd.co / Paper Rolls Australia are our front of jumper sponsor. It saw PMA Solutions return to the Eagles using their issd.co brand. Phil Okill and PMA were long time sponsor partners with East Coast prior to the NEAFL era and their return was very welcome indeed. This sponsorship was co-supported via Rodney Frost and the team at Paper Rolls Australia through Rodney’s passion for the club. So thank you to both Phil and Rodney for your support and sponsorship of our jumpers. 10 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK Mansfield Corporation came on board straight away and with no hesitations. Bruce and Kathleen Mansfield have been strong supporters of our club and have already committed to a renewal of their 2016 shorts sponsorship. We thank you Bruce and Kathleen for your support of the Eagles and look forward to having you as part of the East Coast family for many more years. KFC came back and supported us this season with the help of Greg Fisher. Seeing the red and yellow KFC branded Sherrins flying around at Kanebridge Oval matches was spectacular and a great privilege for every grade to get to use new footballs each and every home game. Whenever the football is in a photograph you’d be amazed how often the KFC logo is visible. One of Greg’s KFC restaurants is the one adjacent to the Fiddler, so get down and say thanks for already re re-committing committing KFC to the 2016 season. Jatec Transport has come back on board supporting the Club as our primary outer clothing sponsor. Troy and Jane Barlow have been long term partners with the Eagles (and the Kellyville Magpies) and we are very grateful that they chose to stick with the Club through throu tough times as we regrouped throughout the 2015 season. After a few years away we were delighted to agree a deal with an old friend for season 2015 and it was great to be able to call The Fiddler our “home” again. Their support was quick and fast and they were a great addition to the club with some wonderful functions being held there with great food, drink and service. After match gatherings at a local venue was a great addition to the end of our home match experience. We’re delighted to announce tha that General Manager Sara Belling and East Coast have already agreed that The Fiddler remains as our home again in 2016. The NAB introducer program was back in action this year with the Club. There have been a number of loans completed and more are filtering filterin through the system. It’s a fantastic way to get funds back into the Club and already Daniel and Jennifer Cicciarelli, along with Jared and Bianca Madden have concluded loans through Jon Gawley and provided kind testimonials showing their support for the program. The 2015 season brought back the Match Day sponsor experience which offers local businesses the opportunity to entertain their clients and gues guests ts at the footy, toss the coin and enjoy the hospitality of the Eagles. Thanks to Tony Moran for hosting these days and a special thank you goes to PPC Moulding Services, Samways Building and Construction and The Insulated Roof Panel Company. We hope to see you back again 2016. 11 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK The Player Sponsorship program continued for the 2015 season and it saw a good uplift in support with 22 players finding their own sponsor. Special mentions and thanks to the following companies. Jamie Vlatko Outback Jacks Trent Baker Paper Rolls Australia Blake Anderson KFC Jared Madden Castle Hill Hyundai Jack Dimery Outback Jacks Rodney Frost Stuart Turner Bennett Precision Tooling P/L James Regan Samways Building & Construction 360HR Daniel Spiteri BMG Air Conditioning Pty Ltd Cameron Arndt Jatec Jon Vlatko Upstream Print Solutions Peter Vlatko KFC Andrew Browning Andrew McConnell Aaron Savage Girvan Waugh Jared Patira KFC Commercial Industrial Contractors Storit Self Storage Jimmy Delaney Insulated Roof Panel Company Baseplan Software Aaron Drinkwater Josh Cutting The Supervets Nathan Thomas Outback Jacks Jacob Rowley Ben Carey G&G Prestige Constructions Paper Rolls Australia This season also saw a BBQ sponsor come on board to help out the Club. A & I Auto Group via Ian and Andrew Heathcote chose to kindly assist their Mum and Dad Barbara and Ron. With their financial assistance the famous East Coast BBQ rolled into Kanebridge Oval on every home match day to keep the great Eagle Burger traditional alive. We also have another group of benefactors to the club who have willingly contributed to the Eagles Fighting Fund which was set up to help the footy club through its hard times. Donations were accepted and many players and supporters willingly chipped in with regular payments through their bank account, or on an adhoc basis as finances allowed. We wish to acknowledge and thank the following group of people who have supported the club with income outside its regular revenue streams. Chris Baddock, Paul Stewart, Tracey Stewart, Michael Sankey, Richard Lee, Jon Vlatko, Mark and Peta Pinchen, Laima Physick, Peter Physick, Jon Gawley, Trent Stubbs, Jackson Ferguson, Stuart Turner, Eugene Kruger, Kenny Ewen-Chappell, Josh Cutting, Jordan McPherson, Cameron Arndt, Will Bradley, Aaron Drinkwater, Dean Costello, Andrew Browning and “Mr Dickens” who won the East Coast Footy tipping and donated the prize money to the big red football that sat in the canteen. Many anonymous people also contributed to that footy and we thank them as well, plus anyone we have missed. Our apologies if we have. Your donations allowed us to completely pay off our year one repayment for the commercial loan mentioned in the Financial Report on page 8. Our fundraising this year was excellent with some well thought out plans and events which were well supported and will only get better. The annual golf day at North Ryde was a good fun day and it is on again this year on December 4th, so keep that date clear in your golf diary. Thanks to Andrew Turner for his organisation. Our match day raffles wouldn’t have happened without Tracey Stewart finding the prizes and Rudi Bylsma who has secured his role for next season as the chief raffle book seller. Back to Baulko day was enormous, thanks to the unbelievable energy of the Media Man Rodney Frost. Frosty got the attendance to a level that was the biggest crowd I have ever seen at an AFL match in Sydney. There were jumping castles, face painting, Kanebridge apartments being sold, merchandise stands to name but a few. But above all it was a day where it was evident the club had been reborn. Jumper Presentation night started off proceedings at the Fiddler in March, followed Big AB’s extraordinary Trivia night in May, which somehow morphed into a fancy dress party. The atmosphere 12 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK was truly wonderful. Ladies Day was a great success as was the Mid-Season Black Tie Ball with hypnotist Greg Hudson. And lastly our Club Champion Night at the Castle Hill RSL was well supported by players and supporters to watch Trent Stubbs take his third B&F in succession. PS We haven’t seen the last of Andrew Browning’s unique MC skills... 2015 was a great start to the resurgence of the East Coast Eagles. There have been massive inroads made, none of which could have happened without the cooperation and support of everybody mentioned above. There have been many to say thanks to, but if you have been missed it, was not intentional. We are truly lucky to be able to exist again and your backing and encouragement is entirely the reason. 2016 will be better, it will be improved, and we are always open to ideas and help, so should you have some thoughts, please speak to us. This is our Club and we are back! 13 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK FACILITIES Paul Meyer Firstly a bit of an introduction. I’ve been around the club for approximately two years now but stepped up to join the Board mid-season. I am currently the treasurer for the Northwest Redback Masters and was previously on the committee (General and Treasurer) or in coaching roles for the Kellyville Magpies juniors. My son played in the inaugural U15 Division One Joint Venture Eagles team and could be seen helping out the Div Three Eagles running water, boundary or assisting as Team Manager. Kanebridge Oval was in high demand this year. The four Eagles teams, Masters, AFL9’s, Kellyville Magpies academy in its inaugural year, 18 Kellyville Magpies Junior teams, Auskick, numerous school sports bookings and GWS Giants school programs thru the week. We will continue to plan and work with the respective bodies to ensure no conflicts and availability. With all that use I believe the ground held up really well. Our special thanks as always go to Simone Francké who, as Council’s full time grounds person, maintains the venue in such terrific condition. Without question Simone deserves all the praise we can possibly heap upon her. Around the ground • Many new club sponsor perimeter fence signs boards went up, as well as those on the Coaches boxes and the scoreboard. With the resurgence of the Eagles Nest, a new permanent sign was purchased and erected between the scoreboard and southern goals. We expect the convocation to be bigger next year. • After many weeks of love and care prior to the commencement of the season, the scoreboard seemed to hold up pretty well. More work though will be required prior to the start of next season. The PA system was brought back to life and aided in the pre-game music, sponsorship announcements, winning song and canteen menu. (Although Dicky can be louder at times!!) • • Security sensor lights were put up around the coaching boxes and ground facilities which seems to have reduced the number of graffiti attacks. • Ground lighting. While the council is aware that some lamps are not working, it’s obviously not a simple job to replace the faulty ones. We are in ongoing discussion with them on ways, means and timing to fix the wiring and globes. • The council is continuing with the earthworks to extend the hill around the northern goals and to the opposition coaches box. • We are in discussion with cricket to commence pre-season training on the ground in late November. Looking forward to a great 2016 season where we can go one better. Roosy 14 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK CATERING Richard Lee Looking back on the 2015 season from a Canteen perspective, it was a good year. The budget was met, there were no injuries and no one was poisoned. We catered for all of the home matches, one Kellyville Magpies’ event and one Masters’ event. Once again Ron and Barbara Heathcote were the backbone of the operation, providing the world’s best BBQ trailer and food, cooking thousands of hamburgers, sausages, eggs, a hundred or so kilos of bacon, hundreds of hash browns, many, many pancakes and one thousand ton of onions. Through all of this activity there was never a cross word and you could always be guaranteed a smile. Jon Gawley must also be congratulated on his efforts on the BBQ. If it was going, Jon would be cooking while at the same time performing the duties of Ground Manager or any other job that needed a fill in. The Division Three boys did a fantastic job of serving and ensuring that the demands from the customers were fulfilled. Their dexterity with the serving tongs was a beauty to behold. Well done and many, many thanks boys. If these blokes were not serving they would be contributing to the Club through the purchase and consumption of their favourite product in the Eagles’ Nest under the ever watchful eye of Paul Meyer. On match days this season we decided to try and raise some extra funds by running a match day raffle. Tracey Stewart did a marvellous job of sourcing items for the raffle and Rudi Bylsma made himself available to mingle with the crowd and sell raffle tickets. Thousands of dollars were raised through these match day raffles which went a long way to supporting the Fighting Fund. As well as helping out with serving in the canteen, Tracey also organised the “Football Money box” that was on the counter at each game. This donation box raised a very healthy $500 for the Fighting Fund. Your help this year Tracey was fantastic. Thanks heaps. It was also great to have Tony Moran involved with the match day sponsors. Tony hosted the guests and ensured that their lubricants were kept stocked and that none of the sponsors’ guests left Kanebridge Oval hungry. We also engaged Paul Eastman and his coffee truck this year. It seems to have been a big hit with the patrons. High standard coffee on a cold day at the footy is a 15 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK real bonus. Well done to all of the Eastos. Special thanks go to my wife Colleen. She was at the ground early each match day sorting out the canteen, cutting bread rolls, tomatoes, lettuce and onions, offering me advice and serving the patrons all day. Fantastic job Colleen. A special mention needs to be made in regards to our Back to Baulko day. What an event! It was great to see so many old faces back at the footy. The canteen, BBQ and drinks outlets were run off their feet. It was a busy and fantastic day. To all those who helped or contributed on this and Ladies Day (another major event), thank you and very well done. All in all I’m very happy with the canteen’s contribution to the Club this year. Some of the comments were marvellous. “The best catered AFL ground in Sydney”, “I love coming to this place for the pancakes”, “Pasties!!! Fantastic”, “You have to have an Eagle Burger, they are the best”. These comments came from opposition supporters and players. Well done Colleen and Tracey, a fantastic effort from Ron, Barbara, Jon and the Division Three boys. Thanks Tony, Rudi and Paul. To those who I have not named, I thank you as well. Many folks assisted in many ways in ensuring the off field success of the Club this year. Thanks to everyone who contributed and I look forward to a bigger and better 2016. ECE COTERIE CLUB Richard Lee “Many years ago there was what most called “the little white bag”. This bag accumulated money from various activities, most of which was sharing a few beers at training amongst die hard Falcons, now Eagles’ supporters. Each year the bag covered the expense of small items on behalf of the Football Club. In 2009 the “little white bag” was suitably formalised into the Eagles’ Coterie Club and although the bag is still traditionally used to collect money at each event, the Coterie is now much more structured in its support role to the Football Club.” The 2015 Season was a quiet one for the Coterie Club. To have a successful and meaningful Coterie Club you first need to ensure that the supporter base of the Football Club is in a healthy state. Given the attendance at games this season and the involvement and support of people through the season I feel that the Coterie Club can be revived and made more relevant in 2016. We will be seeking membership early next season, our fund raising will continue through the sale of Dim Sims and refreshments at training sessions and at least one “Members and Friends” social event will be organised. Details of the revived Coterie Club will be available early next season, so get on board and show your support for our fantastic East Coast Eagles Football Club. The ECE Coterie Club is “The Friends of the ECE” so we are all eligible to join and help the Footy Club. Our next ECE Golf Day will be held at North Ryde Golf Club on Friday December 4th so all you golfers out there, please put this date in your diaries now and await further info and updates. 16 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK EAGLES’ EXTRAVAGANZA The following table shows the Player Groupings, the highest bidder and the price paid, plus minor round return. Rodney Frost Unusually, Rodney’s first sporting foray was not AFL footy. He played soccer as a little tacker and was allocated the job of goal keeping. An interesting role, given Roddy’s later outlook on life in general. Goal keeping is all about defence, rather than attack and we all know that any task Frosty takes on in adult life is attacked with a frenzy that doesn’t dissipate until the job is completely done. Usually to perfection. Back in those soccer days Roddy reportedly used to sit down and cry if he ever let a goal through, such is his dislike of losing. But eventually in 1989 at 10 years of age he followed the family tradition, started by brother Matthew, of playing Australian Rules football. His first year was with the U11 Hawks at Baulkham Hills. Many people still with the Eagles will remember the intense rivalry that existed between the Hawks and the Kookas at Baulko. The realisation that it’s all over His first coach Chris Sharpe had this to say about young Frosty in the 1989 Year Book. “A first year player with a big future in the game. Has a great pair of hands and a penetrating kick. Proved to be a dominant force in the centre and set up many forward thrusts with clever use of the ball by hand and foot. Represented Hills & District U11’s. A great start in Aussie Rules, Rodney.” Five years later at age 16 he was playing Senior footy for the Falcons in 1994 and in fact remarkably played 35 games that season across U17s, U19s and Premier Division. His elevation to the seniors came off the back of kicking 10 goals one week against Westbrook U17s while in a tagging role!! In 1997 he won the B&F at the Falcons and still holds the honour of the youngest Club Champion amongst many other great footballers for the Falcons and the Eagles. Being a member of the NSW RAMS squad took him away from local footy for a lot of 98 & 99, but he returned in force in 2000 when the Eagles were born and where he has remained forever after, reaching a total of 159 Premier Division games of which 82 were for the Eagles and 77 for the Falcons. 18 Running out for his last game EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK Just one more Eagles And this is the one As is the nature of the man, Roddy kept playing for the Eagles after he realised that Premier Div was out of reach and another 105 games were notched up in the blue & gold in the lower divisions. The culmination of which came in R18 this season against Holroyd Parramatta in Div One. The masses turned out at Kanebridge for the final game of a marvellous career and they were treated to three Frost goals, one of which was a drop kick, just to remember the days of old at Charlie McLaughlin. 362 games across his career is something to be proud of..... But he didn’t stop there. When the “you know what hit the fan” in mid-2014 following our NEAFL experience, Rodney was the first to put up his hand to swap to a management role and assist with the enormous task of rescuing his Club from the brink of collapse. He took on the dual roles of List Manager for Michael Sankey and as an advisor to the Board, eventually taking on a Director’s position several months later. Considering everything he has on his plate as Group General Manager at Lamson Paragon, he threw himself into anything he was asked to do, or alternatively if he decided that something needed to be done, he simply went and did it. The Club has never had as much Media activity as in 2015 after Frosty formulated a long overdue database and began broadcasting Eagles publicity across any form of social media he could find. The enormous success of the Back to Baulko day this year can be credited to Rod and his endeavours to ensure the event was the triumph it was. Combine that with the role he played in assembling the group of coaches for 2016 demonstrates that those days spent in the soccer goalmouth taught the man a lot about not wanting to lose.... anything. He is intensely loyal, dependable, trustworthy and generous with his time as can be seen with his enthusiastic support of St Vinnies’ with their CEO Sleep out and BBQ’ing in Martin Place for homeless people, plus riding hundreds of kilometres to raise He’s still got it!! money for Cancer Research. Congratulations Rodney for becoming the 15th Life Member of the East Coast Eagles. 19 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK LIFE MEMBER - 2015 Life Membership will only be conferred upon any member who has 10 years active involvement with East Coast Eagles AFL Football Club Inc. and has rendered outstanding service or has displayed exceptional, unusual, or distinguished merit to the club. Jon Gawley A “Sandgroper” by birth, Jon was born in Perth where he spent his childhood years barracking for Claremont and the mighty West Coast Eagles, following in the footsteps of his uncle Steve Gawley, also an East Coast Eagles Life Member from 2010. Jon didn’t excel at footy so decided to take another path in order to satisfy his passion for sport of any kind. Athletics took his eye and in particular the discipline of Walking. In between going to Subiaco Oval to watch the Eagles, Jon became a very accomplished walker winning numerous State Titles at all distances and age levels in WA. In 1997 he and the family decided he should move to Sydney, as to do so would enhance his Walking career and give him a greater opportunity to qualify for the Australian team and the 2000 Sydney Olympics. For the next two years or so Jon put his heart and soul into walking every day of the year in order to achieve everyone’s dream of competing in an Olympic Games. He was billeted out with various families across greater Sydney, eventually finding his niche in North Parramatta where he became heavily involved with the Parramatta City Track & Field Athletics Club. With his delightful daughter Summer In March 1999 Athletics Australia ranked Jon 4th in the 3,000 metre walk, 3rd in the 5,000, 2nd in the 10,000 and 13th in the 20km road walk. Unfortunately there wasn’t a 10,000 metre walk in the Sydney Olympics; otherwise Jon would today have been a past Australian Olympian. In April 1999, Jon flew to the UK in an attempt to qualify for the English Olympics 20km team through his parentage, but when in a position to succeed in that endeavour during the qualifying race, he ripped his Achilles to shreds and his walking career ended on the spot there and then forever. He returned to Australia and to the North Parramatta Athletics Club and took up coaching junior athletes and put his hand up for the committee, eventually rising through the ranks to President in 2002. But it was still AFL footy that gnawed away at him and although he spent a year supporting Balmain, it was in 2004 that he joined Uncle Steve at the East Coast Eagles. 20 Circa 2006 with a Sun Corp Hat EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK “How good is this”, he said to himself. “My beloved Eagles play in the Sydney comp”. That season and next he took on any task he could d by running water for every grade, every match, helping out at training and generally made a friendly “nuisance” of himself as he learnt the craft of how a local footy club operates. In 2006 Rohan Graham appointed Jon as the Premier Division Team Manager, a role he held for the next six years through five Grand Finals and three Premierships. In the 2008 Year Book, Glenn Garner described Jon as follows. “He rides the game like he is on the favourite at Randwick, adding special remarks for each umpiring de decision cision or commentating on mistakes from both sides.” There’s no doubt that our Jon enjoys his football. It was also in 2008 that Jon introduced Ron & Barbara Heathcote to the Club. Ron of course has gone on to hold legendary status within the Club for his culinary abilities on his mobile BBQ. From 2009 when we moved into what we then knew as Bruce Purser Reserve, Jon would ttoil away tirelessly on the BBQ with Ron until his Team Manager duties kicked in. From 2012, when Jon retired from Team Management, he could be found on the BBQ happily cooking away all day with Ron and always with a great smile on his face. But it was in mid-2014 that Jon Gawley really stood up to fight for his beloved East Coast Eagles when the Club was literally on its knees. When the reality of what we faced was clear, Jon immediately put up hand to take on the extraordinary task of trying to get to the bottom of our financial situation and then once we were Now at the NAB in 2010 given a lifeline, he took control of the finances as we fought our way back from oblivion. Not only did he watch expenditure like a hawk, he was absolutely and directly responsible for introducin introducing g Kanebridge Limited and Vesta Homes to the Eagles. Two partnerships that will stand the test of time at East Coast. The amount of hours Jon has devoted to his Directorship in the last 18 months would easily number in the thousands and his contribution ribution to our re re-build build is simply beyond measurement. And he did all this whilst at the same time becoming Australia’s the #1 Business Banker in the NAB for their year ending Sept 30th!! Congratulations Jon on becoming the 16th Life Member of the East C Coast oast Eagles AFL Football Club. 21 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK EAGLES’ PLAYER LIFE MEMBERS 2008 onwards Players of the East Coast Eagles AFL Football Club shall be entitled to Player Life Membership after playing one hundred and fifty (150) Premier Division (including NEAFL) games for East Coast Eagles, or two hundred (200) games in any East Coast Eagles grade. 2010 Ben Physick 2011 2012 2014 Jason Duss Ryan Fitton Tim Physick Jon Vlatko PLAYER LIFE MEMBERS – 1989 to 2007 1989 Sean Fraser, Michael Payne, Guy Place 1990 1991 1992 1993 Steven Brown, Alistair Jackson, Mark McLeod Jason Crawford, Scott Fraser, Craig McLeod, Adam Stone Hugh Stone, Matthew Courts, Todd Cuneo Brett Baker, Doug Baker, Simon Bishop, Peter Bleus, Brendan Courts, Robin Drew, Simon Hammond, Adam Turbill Scott Abercrombie, Craig Armstrong, Matthew McPhee, David Reed Trevor Hare, Matthew Hayman, Anthony Horner, Scott Jones, Stuart Wynn Greg Driscoll, Matthew Frost, Daniel Graham, Ryan Meldrum, Lachlan Pascoe, Nathan Scott-Rogers, Gerard Thripp Jason Duss, Josh Harvey, Steve Merkel, Dean Nankivell, Heath Sharpe John Burt, Tim Delaney, Rodney Frost, Luke McLeod, Greg Thomas Craig Abercrombie, Jay Brotherston, Rory Cormican, Jarrod Crosby, Paul Eastman, Troy Eastman, Michael Faulkner, Mark Harrison. In a Club the size of East Coast, there are any number of candidates who would be worthy winners. But each year someone always stands out … Richard Lee It’s hard to believe that this man’s name isn’t already in the list above. He’s been with the footy club since I have and that’s a long time indeed. Circa 1991 saw the Lee and Physick kids arrive at Charlie McLaughlin Reserve in Baulkham Hills ready to attack the U9’s and U11’s. But this is not about the children; it’s about a man who has never stepped away from an issue that needed to be solved, or a task that needed to be done for the kids. And now at the Eagles, it’s for adults. Men who play football at a proud club that if it wasn’t for people like Dickie Lee, would not have existed in 2015. He doesn’t have any kids playing anymore, but just as he does with the Kellyville Lions, he volunteers his time to help the community. In our case it’s his beloved AFL Football Club where he loves to watch kids grow into fine young men, just like his own Jonathan and Timothy. Forever supported by his wife Colleen and their daughter Kelly. Although he strategically stepped down from the Board after the first 12 months to allow others to step up, Richard certainly wasn’t going anywhere. He became the Catering Manager and ran the Coterie Club where the smell of his famous dim sims still permeate the air on Thursday nights. He conjured up a record income from the Canteen and did it with a constant smile and good humour. Our footy club is so fortunate that Dickie is one of us..... 25 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK CLUB PERSON OF THE YEAR Perpetual trophy donated by the Abercrombie family PREVIOUS WINNERS (Including BHAFC recipients up to 1999) 1989 John Mitchell 2002 Jan Frost & Scott Abercrombie 1990 Warren Quintrell 2003 Phil Bester 1991 Lindsay Mayo 2004 Alan Brotherston 1992 Trevor Hangan 2005 Matt Stewart 1993 Greg Crosby 2006 Peter Mann 1994 Mick Brazel 2007 Alan Moeller 1995 Garry Hutchinson 2008 Peter Steer 1996 John Meldrum 2009 Julie Whale 1997 Matthew Frost 2010 Liz Duss 1998 Richard Lee 2011 Garry & Bronwyn Bailey 1999 Peter Physick 2012 Trevor Hangan 2000 Craig Abercrombie 2013 Andrew Turner 2001 Ryan Madden 2014 David Arndt A club is only as good as its people. Be they players, coaches, administrators, managers or supporters. We have many such people at East Coast who happily provide their assistance in a variety of ways. Some do it financially, others do it with time. Some do it with both. Paul Meyer Paul sort of emerged out of nowhere. At first he was just the guy who supplied the Foxtel remotes and who fixed up the wiring last year for the computer at the timekeepers’ table. But his enthusiasm and willingness to help soon became obvious to everybody. He took on the Div Three Manager’s role even though he was already heavily involved with Masters AFL and Kellyville Magpies. Then when the scoreboard came back from cricket season broken and buckled, Paul took it upon himself to fix it. And that was after er money had been expended to a commercial company to “fix it”. But Paul did it right and it hasn’t missed a beat since. Not just the roller shutters, but he re-soldered every electronic panel in it. That still wasn’t enough. He then offered to replace the he PA system at the ground which had been heavily vandalised over the last few years. Working long hours before Round 1, he completed the task just in time and “We’re a happy team at East Coast” we can now be heard all the way down at the Fiddler. He was the perpetrator of The Eagles’ Nest which brings so much joy to all supporters as they respectfully banter with the opposition and are now regarded as Premier Division’s 19th man. He ran the AFL raffle ticket program during the season, he Club umpires when required and he became a Director of the Club in July when offered a spot on the Board. And to top it all off he put up his hand to build all four team’s video Vote Count that was shown at Club Champion Night. “Roosy” we are super glad that you cchose hose the East Coast Eagles to be a friend of because it appears there is nothing you can’t do, or importantly won’t offer to do. 26 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK CLUBMAN OF THE YEAR Perpetual trophy donated by Tint•a•Car Norwest This award had always automatically gone to the winner of the Best & Fairest trophy in First Grade. The Club Executive chose to introduce revised assessment criteria from 1999 onwards, thus allowing any East Coast player to win. This trophy will now be awarded to that player who displays exemplary form both on and off the field in relation to overall Club contribution. Up until and including 2006, this award was titled “Footballer of the Year”. PREVIOUS WINNERS (Including BHAFC recipients up to 1999) 1990 Mick Toy 2003 Dan Gaunt 1991 David Reed 2004 Ben Macnamara 1992 Doug Scholz 2005 Jon Vlatko 1993 Greg Lake 2006 Kristian Pearson 1994 Graham Jones 2007 Michael Sankey 1995 Graham Jones 2008 Chris Moore 1996 Shaun Edmunds 2009 Tim Jenson 1997 Rodney Frost 2010 Damon Steer 1998 Jarrod Crosby 2011 Damon Steer 1999 Jarrod Crosby 2012 Steve Marks 2000 Jarrod Crosby 2013 Matthew O’Connor 2001 Gus Seebeck 2014 Jared Patira 2002 Daniel Bylsma All footy clubs across Australia have fine people. People who make it their mission in life to ensure that “their club” is the best. The Eagles are no different to any other. Jon Vlatko This year’s recipient would have no inkling that he was being considered, let alone win it. After the debacle of the NEAFL era, our Club was on its knees financially and even though we may have saved the footy club, there was no point in doing so unless we had players to play for it. Cue, Jon Vlatko. JV stepped up like you wouldn’t believe by offering his help on the Management side first. Jon heard all the gory details, but the Board realised that we should really be utilising his great strengths with the players. Together with Michael Sankey and Rodney Frost, all three men set upon fulfilling an herculean task to assemble a squad of players from the ashes. With Vlats leading the way he spent enormous amounts of time talking with players and helping them understand why things were the way they were. He appealed to their love of all things footy and in particular remaining with a club which wanted them and loved them. The old East Coast culture was beginning to arise and Jon was implanting that within them. The assessment of his work is not just the on field results, but it is the immeasurable harmony that returned. Mates playing with mates again who wanted to go on Harbour cruises that Jon organised and ran. Guys who willingly visited the Kellyville Magpies and the Baulkham Hills Hawks junior clubs to help develop the Eagles of the future. Hell, the Magpies think so much of Jon they even have a trophy named after him at U14 level. Jon, you are the 2005 ECE Club Champion and you’ve captained three Premierships, but we hope this Award gives you some goose bumps because you thoroughly deserve it in your 11th season at the Eagles. 27 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK EAGLES’ VOLUNTEERS By Rodney Frost In my short life I've had a few tough challenges, but I must say writing this report has truly tested me. I didn’t want to miss a soul, nor underplay the importance of any particular person’s involvement, so it took me four days to write this to make sure I nailed it. As a player I believed we were "just really lucky" to have a few people around to "do stuff" so I could have a kick of the footy with my mates and focus on winning. I always thanked people genuinely and cared for them as fellow Eagles and mates. But what I overlooked though, as a young man without a family, was the enormous amount of other things these people could have been doing such as spending time with their own families. I didn't think of the huge amount of sacrifices they made so that players could just play footy for our beloved Eagles. I ask that each person who is reading this now stops and imagines they are sitting 100 metres above Kanebridge Oval in a helicopter looking down on game day. Close your eyes and stop and imagine it... Imagine Back to Baulko day even. Imagine it for twenty seconds and look around that day... and then open them. Now this time when you close them, imagine that all the people doing the following tasks were all taken away from that day: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • the uniform and merchandise shop the announcer the umpires’ escort the ground manager the knitting shop the canteen the BBQ the coaches the coaching support staff the team managers and runners the timekeepers the club field, goal and boundary umpires the outrider bars the water runners the coffee van • the setup work from 7am and clean up until 9pm Paul Regan What would happen???? I will leave you with that thought as you can now visualise how important our Volunteers are.... We would love you to jump on board and help out. Even the BBQ for two hours for the year is great! I would personally like to name and fame the following people for being outstanding volunteers during the year: • • • • • • • • Damon Steer John Dwyer Richard O'Keefe David Arndt Peter Steer Phillip Bester Paul Eastman Peter van Vliet 28 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • John Hupfeld Greg Thomas Hayley Clift Paul Regan Lachlan Holroyd Rudi Bylsma Laima Physick Peter Physick Bronwyn Bailey Gary Bailey Matt O'Connor Paul Meyer Jon Gawley Trevor Hangan Richard Lee Colleen Lee Tracey Stewart Paul Stewart Daniel Cicciarelli Chris Baddock Gary Delaney Ron Heathcote Barb Heathcote Tony Moran Gavin Dimery Alan O'Connor • The entire playing group for volunteering with juniors, the BBQ, setting up, cleaning up and doing whatever was asked... Even staying back Thursday before Grand Final to sweep the floor! If I have missed anyone I sincerely apologise. Please do not take it personally at all; I reached far and wide to make sure I didn't miss anyone. Our group of Volunteers are without a doubt the absolute Elite volunteers. The next time you're at the football I challenge you to lend a hand and help us build our culture of "giving back". Our Board thought it worthy this year to award one of your most devoted volunteers with the recognition this person continually deserves. See next page. I also want to give a special mention to Richard and Colleen Lee for their efforts in the Catering Dept this season. Our canteen had a record year according to financial reports and it couldn't have been done without the Lee’s along with Ron and Barbara Heathcote and Jon Gawley. This team contributed $24,000 to our football club. None of them have children involved at all with the club and just continue to give. An absolute inspiration to someone like me. Thank you to you all! Another special mention to Rudi Bylsma who has been strapping my ankles since I was fifteen!! And I’m not 22 now either! Rudi has been volunteering with our club for long over twenty years and most players and club members wouldn't realise that. Rudi is an absolute gentleman who came out of nowhere with the raffle this year which contributed thousands of dollars to our club. Thanks Rudi... 29 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR As I'm sure you can imagine this award is the hardest to decide on as every single volunteer deserves recognition. Below is an excerpt from East Coast’s presentation to the League for our nomination to be included in the 2015 AFL Sydney Hall of Fame. It was written and submitted in mid August 2015. I’ve been around Sydney Footy for 26 years across coaching, playing and now as a proud member of our Board of Directors. I haven’t seen anyone that’s given so much for so long without a League award to his / her name. Trevor Hangan’s dedication to Sydney Football is 100% unsurpassed. Prior to his association with the East Coast Eagles he played and coached at Balmain for 20 years (1970-1990), four years at Baulkham Hills (1991-1994 and 1999), two years at Southwest Sydney (Moorebank), five years with the NSW Masters AFL and 38 (yes 38) years with the NSW Police AFL (1977-2015) as Team Manager for their annual touring side in Police footy carnivals around the nation. He has been involved with the Eagles in the capacity as a coach, player and more recently as a volunteer since the Club’s inception in 2000. In terms of honours, Trev was a Premiership coach and player at Balmain, received the BHAFC Club Person of the Year in 1992, the East Coast President’s Award in 2006, appointed as a Life Member at the Eagles in 2008, ECE Club Person of the Year in 2012, received the NSW Police AFL Service Award in 2013 and now in 2015 we are extremely proud to recognise Trev as our Volunteer of the Year. Trevor’s standard week looks something like this. Monday – Work all day and then be first to training for Div Three and Juniors (Kellyville) setting up the ground, opening rooms, cleaning, water bottles, security, footballs, medical etc. Last to leave, cleaning up, putting everything away and then locking up the entire ground and facility. 4 hours. • Tuesday – Work all day and then be first to training for Prems, Div 1 and Juniors (Kellyville) setting up the ground, opening rooms, cleaning, water bottles, security, footballs, medical etc. Last to leave, cleaning up, putting everything away and then locking up the entire ground and facility. 4 hours. • Wednesday – Work all day and then be first to training for Div 3 and Juniors (Kellyville) setting up the ground, opening rooms, cleaning, water bottles, security, footballs, medical etc. Last to leave, cleaning up, putting everything away and then locking up the entire ground and facility. 4 hours. • Thursday – Work all day and then be first to training for Prems, Div 1 and Juniors (Kellyville) setting up the ground, opening rooms, cleaning, water bottles, security, footballs, medical, Joker Poker etc. Last to leave, cleaning up, putting everything away and then locking up the entire ground and facility. 4 hours. • Friday – If we have a home game he’s at the ground preparing or even just doing a safety check – 1 hour. • Weekend – He goes to all Premier games and any other games he can, even if they are in a different location or on a different day. He volunteers all day, even if we are the away side. If we are the home side he is first to arrive and last to leave every day. – 10 hours • Pre-Season – Trevor does not miss a session regardless of where it is in Sydney. TOTAL – 17 hours a week x 46 weeks = 782 hours x 20 plus years! A reminder that Trevor has no children in the club at all and simply loves his footy and his club and does it all for nothing in return, except for us all being eternally grateful. His wife Jenny is an unbelievably supportive person. There's not much else you can say except for how much we thank Jenny to support Trevor in doing what he loves. For any man to be actually able to devote the time like Trev does to any football club is amazing. Most of us would have been shown the door. Jenny, thank you so very much! • Well done Trevor. You're an amazing human being who continues to give. 30 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK CLUB CHAMPION PREVIOUS WINNERS 2000 Steve Cutler 2008 Shane Ryan / Luke Stanford 2001 Clint Austerberry 2009 Jon Vlatko 2002 Clint Austerberry 2010 Damien Bowles 2003 Clint Austerberry 2011 Jamie Vlatko 2004 Ben Macnamara 2012 Jamie Vlatko 2005 Jon Vlatko 2013 Trent Stubbs 2006 Trent Goodrem 2014 Trent Stubbs / Michael Riseley 2007 Gus Seebeck “A man can be as great as he wants to be. If you believe in yourself and have the courage, the determination, the dedication, the competitive drive and if you are willing to sacrifice the little things in life and pay the price for the things that are worthwhile, it can be done.” Vince Lombardi To be the best in your field is an enormous honour. The Eagles revere their heroes and it is a tribute to the talents, determination and work ethic of those who become our Club Champion each year. Trent Stubbs Trent had won the last two Club Champion awards and it would have been very easy for him to be satisfied and rest on his past achievements. However in season 2015, he took his game to another level as the club went back into the Sydney AFL competition. It was clear from the very beginning that he would have a big season as he trained harder than he had done over the previous two years. He had a slight scare in a practice game twinging his hamstring however he was as fit and strong as he has ever been leading into the 2015 season. Trent was extremely consistent throughout season 2015 being named in the Eagles best on 13 separate occasions (out of 16 games) averaging 33 possessions per week. He had plenty of standout games for the Eagles in 2015 including his Round 1 game v Manly where he gathered 29 touches and kicked five goals, his Round 3 game against UTS where he had 30 touches and kicked five goals, his Round 13 game v Western Suburbs where he had 44 possessions and kicked five goals and finally his Round 17 game v North Shore where he had 33 possessions and kicked 12 goals. All of this was done from the midfield and shows just how dominant he was in the competition. Trent is able to win the contested football as well as the uncontested football which makes him a very dangerous match up for the opposition. He was tagged in every game in 2015; however he never let that get in the way of him contributing to the side each and every week. In season 2015 Trent also won the competition goal kicking with 59 goals during the regular season averaging nearly four goals per game which is an amazing achievement for a starting midfielder. He finished runner up in the League’s Phelan medal and he also represented AFL Sydney in the game against Canberra held at Blacktown International Sports Park. Trent Stubbs will go down as one of the best East Coast Eagles players of his time. He is now a very deserving triple Club Champion and we congratulate him on another outstanding season and another Club Champion award. 31 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK GOALKICKING Perpetual trophy donated by Chris Bilkey PREVIOUS WINNERS (Including BHAFC recipients up to 1999) (Goals kicked in brackets) 1990 Steven Brown (59) 2003 Luke Stanford (30) 1991 Peter Sheehan (91) 2004 Nick Trask (47) 1992 Glen Johnston (117) 2005 Mark Peterson & Nick Trask (33) 1993 Jason Crawford (45) 2006 Gus Seebeck (61) 1994 Greg Lake (41) 2007 Ben Rogers (45) 1995 Jason Westerbrink (63) 2008 Gus Seebeck (73) 2009 Gus Seebeck (111) 1996 Ben Physick & Daniel Graham (45) 1997 Ryan Madden (105) 2010 Jamie Vlatko (73) 1998 Ryan Madden (27) 2011 Jamie Vlatko (78) 1999 Michael Scicchitano (33) 2012 Matt Edwins (48) 2000 Jason Crawford (25) 2013 Jamie Vlatko (50) 2001 Gus Seebeck (47) 2014 Jamie Vlatko (20) 2002 Travis Hall (32) The leading Goal kicker in the Club was for many years awarded to the player who kicked the most across all our grades of footy, no matter where they played, or how often. In 2001 it was changed to recognise First Grade senior goals only. In 2015 the Leading Goalkicker is Trent Stubbs with 62 goals for the Premier Division season. Leading goal kickers in all other teams were: Division One Division Three Peter Vlatko (21) Jared Patira (66) U/19 Isaac Heath (27) Elsewhere you will read that Trent has won his third consecutive Club Champion Award at East Coast. A phenomenal achievement, which in 2015 is topped off by also leading the goal kicking at both the Eagles and the AFL Sydney Premier Division competition, where he won the Stan Milton Trophy. 62 goals (including finals) from a starting midfielder is an impressive stat, particularly when that player is tagged in every game he plays. We don’t keep the accuracy records for goal kicking but if we did, it would show a very high set shot percentage for Trent whose marking strength is more than enough to give him plenty of opportunities to convert. Congratulations are also extended to Jared Patira who headed the AFL Sydney goal kicking leaderboard in Division Three with 66 goals. Jared had a wonderful year with our Third Grade side and played an instrumental role in the team creeping up the ladder in 2015 to set the scene for a big year for Div Three in 2016. At U19 level Isaac Heath with 27 goals was the strength up forward for his side. 32 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK CLUB RECORDS Year NEAFL Premier Division Under 19s ** Reserve Grade *1993 8th 5th ** 6th *1994 9th Runners Up ** 7th *1995 3rd 3rd ** 8th *1996 5th Runners Up 7th *1997 7th PREMIERS 7th *1998 7th 8th 7th *1999 6th 7th 8th 2000 7th PREMIERS 3rd 2001 7th 3rd 7th 2002 9th 5th PREMIERS 2003 6th 3rd 3rd 2004 5th 4th 3rd 2005 5th 8th Runners Up 2006 Runners Up 7th PREMIERS 2007 5th 5th PREMIERS 7th 2008 Runners Up Runners Up PREMIERS 7th 2009 PREMIERS 4th Runners Up 9th 6th 2010 PREMIERS Runners Up 7th 6th 7th 33 Third Grade Under 18s Div Two League Awards Graham Jones Phelan Medal Matthew Burton Kealey Medal Ryan Madden U18 105 goals Jarrod Crosby Phelan Medal Steve Jackson Kealey Medal Daniel Bylsma Sanders Medal Scott Abercrombie Res Grade 48 goals Luke McLeod Sanders Medal Matt Nichol Res Gde 63 goals Gus Seebeck Prem Div 65 goals Tim Kear Tim Physick Sanders Medal jointly Gus Seebeck Prem Div 111 goals Damon Steer U18 PC 59 goals EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK Year NEAFL 2011 Premier Division Under 19’s ** Reserve Grade Third Grade Under 18’s Div Two PREMIERS Runners Up 6th 7th 5th 6th # 2012 5th 7th PREMIERS 8th 9th # 2013 7th 12th 6th 10th 7th # 2014 10th 9th 7th 8th Runners Up 8th 6th 2015 * ** # 6th League Awards Dominic Killworth Kealey Medal Jamie Vlatko Prem Div 78 goals Ethan Barclay U18 PC 71 goals Jake Famularo U18 Div One 103 goals Trent Stubbs Prem Div 59 goals Jared Patira Div Three 66 goals Andrew McConnell Rep Player of the year Played as the Baulkham Hills Falcons in the Sydney AFL Premier Division. Our 2015 Rising Star winner is Lyndon Hupfeld. Lyndon Hupfeld is a local Baulkham Hills junior and is only seventeen years of age. Through strong performances in our Division 1 team earlier in the year, he forced his way into the East Coast Eagles Premier Division team in Round 13 playing the next five games at Premier Division level. Lyndon played mainly at half forward and at times as a backup ruckman. He averaged 14 possessions and just over a goal per game. Lyndon had a couple of standout games in 2015 including Round 13 against Western Suburbs where he gathered 18 possessions, took 10 marks and kicked three goals. He also had a strong game in Round 17 against North Shore where he had 18 possessions, took five marks and kicked a goal. These are fantastic numbers for such a young player in a mature side. Lyndon he has been part of the Giants Academy system for the last few years and this year he has also represented the NSW/ACT RAMS as well as the UWS Giants at NEAFL level. Lyndon is very easy to coach and has the ability to adapt quickly to the different systems and game plans at each of the teams he represents. He is a very deserving Rising Star winner. 36 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK JUNIOR CLUB PARTNERSHIPS By Rodney Frost Without solid partnerships with our local junior clubs where does our future lie? Our Football Club exists to make better people and ensure that all players have a sustainable pathway to play football with great people. To do this we must tightly engage with local clubs holding a focus on maintaining high participation rates in the mid to late teens when all kinds of alternatives appear to these young men. Our year started with open and frank meetings with our two major junior club partnerships in Baulkham Hills Hawks and the Kellyville Magpies. In these meetings we soon realised that we had some yards to gain. Our key improvements have been in partnering by being much more inclusive. To achieve this, our relationships weren’t about one off efforts. Together the three clubs drive AFL in our area and we all had to work together with our current Board of Directors seeing the Magpies and Hawks as an extension of our organisation. This was a year for truly building on the relationships of the past within local junior clubs and the following initiatives are testament to our focus on just how important these clubs are to the Eagles: • • • • • • • • • • At Back to Baulko Day we had over fifty children playing football related games on Kanebridge Oval at half time; The Kellyville Magpies U/14s now have a “Jon Vlatko Award” for their Rising Star. Jon has led from the front by assisting and mentoring these boys for a few years now. Jon knows them all well and they can often be heard at Kanebridge Oval yelling out his name; Both the Kellyville Magpies and Baulkham Hills Hawks now have a perpetual award each called the East Coast Eagles Award. This is for the player in any age group who represents the values, attitudes and behaviours of the East Coast Eagles. This was highly welcomed by both clubs; Both the Kellyville Magpies and Baulkham Hills Hawks were encouraged to attend each East Coast event just as we would attend all their events throughout the year; Michael Sankey delivered a motivational speech prior to the Under 14 Kellyville Magpies winning Grand Final; When both clubs struggled to field an Under 15 team, all three clubs worked together to ensure a joint venture East Coast Eagles Under 15 team was born; The Magpies U17s regularly trained with those from our Senior Group who were training on Wednesday nights; Many of our players were at various events through the year and a special thanks to Jack Dimery and Josh Cutting for their efforts at the awards night; Cameron Arndt as Assistant Coach of the Under 17s was a great effort all year; Food & drink vouchers were handed out to ALL Magpies Academy players to redeem whenever they came to the ground to watch their East Coast Eagles. 37 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK Magpies Development Academy at Kanebridge Oval Established in 2015 the Magpies’ Development Academy has been created for players registered with the Kellyville Rouse Hill Magpies. This Academy has been planned to provide our youth with an opportunity to develop their ability as AFL players. This Academy is designed to be INCLUSIVE rather than EXCLUSIVE providing kids of every ability with an opportunity to become better AFL players. If a player is willing to work hard then we will provide them with a constructive setting and access to knowledgeable coaching services. If a child doesn’t have the skills or ability to be selected for the SWANS or GIANTS Academy, then their future development should not be limited. If a player at the Rouse Hill Kellyville Magpies loves the game of AFL then we should provide them with as many opportunities as possible. This was a ten week program that saw nearly 90 future East Coast Eagles work on new and exciting drills in what was a highlight of the year for our club. The effort, professionalism and enthusiasm of the contributors below was a true testament to the character of these people and what our club stands for when it comes to developing and fostering junior talent. We are extremely proud to thank Michael Sankey and Greg Thomas for leading the following players to the great success of the Magpie Academy: • • • • • • • • Joshua Cutting Zach Johns Alexander Van Vliet Lachlan Hand Kieran Emery Jack Dimery Matt Eastman Chloe Arndt (Whilst Chloe is not a playing Eagle, we are claiming her!) Enormous thanks to David Hemmings for allowing us to be involved and for his vision of an Academy that truly adds value to the lives of the Eagles of tomorrow. 38 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK SEASON WRAP - UP David Arndt - Director of Football Well what a year it’s been for the East Coast Eagles. Challenges were thrown our way not only on the field but off the field. After the withdrawal from the NEAFL competition in late 2014, the club led by Peter Physick and the Board at the time had a mountain of work to do to ensure that East Coast remained a great community football club and held their position in the competition. As for the playing group, it was pleasing to see that 35% of the listed NEAFL players committed to stay and play for their beloved club and provide support in the only way they know how - to play some great football for the Eagles. Pre-season for the playing group started in mid November as planned and it wasn’t long before you gained a sense of the depth we had in the group. Michael Sankey continued to drive the discipline in all fitness activities and games’ sense drills to ensure the players were at their best come Round one. The Pre-Season camp was held in February at Del Rio Ski Park for the entire playing group, Coaches, Managers and Team Assistants. What a fantastic weekend this with most of the group arriving Friday night and team building exercises starting first thing Saturday morning. To start the weekend we had a game of basketball to get the competitive edge out of the players, moving into a team strategy session and finalising the Leadership Group selection. Finishing off the weekend with the all-important round of golf where the playing group could challenge the Coaches. It has to be said, with some unbelievable golf played by the Coaching Group, we were triumphant on the day! When Saturday 11th April rolled around we were ready for the challenges which were ahead, both mentally and physically - unfortunately so were Manly. The Eagles were leading at the major break by 27 pts and then by 34 pts at 3/4 time and we were well on our way to a good win for the opening round. However somehow Manly crawled back and found something extra to take out the game by three points after the final siren. But this was only to be a ‘minor glitch’ in the season with the Premier Division Team going on to win the remainder of their Minor round games, including the 2nd Semi against Pennant Hills. It was then onto the “big dance’ and as finals matches go, it was a hard fought battle between two teams who wanted the win more than anything. Unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be with the Pennant Hills Demons taking out the 2015 flag. Our Division One team lead by John Hupfeld as Head Coach held their own for the majority of the season, especially towards the back end, winning four out of their last five games. In all they won eight and lost 10. Lost opportunities were losing one game by 1 pt, one game by 2 pts and one game by 5 pts. Led onto the park each and every week by their captain Ryan Fitton, he once again showed what a great leader he is to the players and a fantastic ambassador for this Football Club. Even though it was difficult to get a win sometimes, the group always showed a positive outlook and great mateship throughout. Finishing just outside the top five, it’s something I’m sure we can build on for next year and take it all the way. Our Division Three playing group had a great year led by Matt O’Connor coach and the senior leadership group of Jared Patira and Tommy Stewart. Unfortunately they narrowly missed the finals this year, however having spent a little more time with this fantastic bunch of players, it’s hard to see how! Every single game or training session they came out and put 110% in for the team, their mates and the footy club. After their match is finished at Kanebridge - the “NEST” is set up on the pocket at the far south western end of the ground where the boys sit as a group, have a few quiet ones (well it’s not 39 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK always quiet) and support the Div One’s, Prems and the U19s. If they’re not there, then you always know they’ll be on the BBQ, Umpire Escorting, Timekeeping and generally assisting around the ground. What a fantastic sight it was to see the “One More Eagles” banner proudly positioned in the pocket at Henson Park for the Grand Final where the boys sat as a group and cheered on the Premier Division boys. I have no doubt Matty Mack and the boys will build on this season and return in 2016 to be a fiercely competitive team in this Division. Our U19s had a very challenging year with a host of injuries throughout the season and at times player shortages to compete with. With that said, Greg Thomas, Paul Eastman and Peter Van Vliet worked extremely hard each and every week both at training and on game day to develop, train and teach this young playing group to get to the standard they need to play at. Even after losing 15 games, winning two and drawing one, they fought valiantly throughout each and every game, often impacted by injury and unavailability. We should really be looking forward to this team returning as a playing group in 2016 and building on what they showed towards the end on this season through the leadership and planning of new coach John Hupfeld. After only joining the Board in May this year, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the challenges and the experience I’ve gained in this role within the Board of Directors. I would like to take the opportunity to thank Peter Physick, Jon Gawley and Rodney Frost for their ongoing support, knowledge and breaking me out of the “Junior Football” mindset. A huge thank you to Michael Sankey, Peter Steer, Andrew Turner, Damian Minervini and Phil Bester for their ongoing support throughout the season. To John Hupfeld, Richard O’Keefe, John Dwyer and Paul Regan, thank you for all your support on game days and at training - it’s been a real pleasure working with you guys. To Trevor Hangan, who attends all training sessions, assists with the required equipment for training, game days and pulls together the required players clothing for both training and game days - a huge thanks to you mate! You’ve been a great help to me throughout this year Trev and not to mention to the club over the years. Hope to see you next season continuing to support wherever you can. Finally a big vote of thanks to my wife Bethan, daughters Jessica and Chloe and son Cameron for allowing me to take time out to be involved in such a wonderful club and to do something I’m extremely passionate about. Paul Eastman, Peter Van Vliet and myself formed the coaching group and although between us we had a lot of footy knowledge and Junior coaching experience, it was for all of us our first foray into coaching a senior team. We knew very early in the year that this year’s U19s were going to be predominantly a young team, with all but four players still able to play in the 2016 season. We also had the opportunity to blood six U17 players to our 19s team throughout the season and look forward to welcoming them into the Nest next year. The three U19 Musketeers 41 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK Alexander Van Vliet (Best & Fairest), Isaac Heath (Runner Up) and Aidan Chapman (Team Player) Each week as a playing group we would range from between 18 to 30 players due to work commitments, injuries, study; you name it; we constantly had ins and outs. However the most pleasing thing about the players was their positive approach to the game and their team mates, giving 100% on the playing field. We had a tough first half of the year, not being able to get a win on the board, but instead of the players dropping their heads they continued to improve and took the challenge up to their opponents each week. For this they were finally rewarded with a couple of wins, a draw and even a few close losses. This gave them the belief that they can match it with any team in the competition especially with a true age squad in place. Some important thanks …. To the Board, for all your hard work to keep this Club going and moving forward. It was great to see some familiar faces still involved after all these years. To all the other team coaches and assistants, Prems, Div 1 & Div 3 and especially our Head of Coaching Michael Sankey, for all your help and general chats throughout the season. To the Division 3 boys for helping with water running and team morale when we played at the same venue. To Andrew Browning for organising some of the Premier Division players to take on a mentoring role for the U19s. Thanks mate. That day when you guys sat on the hill and cheered us on and gave advice to various players at the breaks was invaluable and it really possibly is what helped get us across the line for our first win. We look forward to seeing that mentoring become a regular part of our team development during the pre-season and into 2016. To Paul and Peter for coaching the 19s with me this year. Even though the scoreboard didn’t show where the team was on the ladder, I know we agreed that the boys definitely improved as the year went on. I can see this team playing finals footy in 2016 if they stick together and work hard in the pre-season. To Bronwyn Bailey for all your hard work with the Managers role; you were able to get all the paperwork and boys organised week in and week out so we could focus on coaching. Sam Berger - Coach's Award To Pablo for pulling on the pink shirt and undertaking our team runner duties, Marty for filling in and being available to help whether it be team runner or water runner and Russ Matthews for putting his hand up and filling 42 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK in as water runner for a lot of our away games. To all the parents for helping get our players to the ground and if I have missed any of you for your extra help – thanks heaps it is really appreciated. To the physios who strapped our players each week so they could play and dealing with all the aches and pains; thank you for your professionalism and support. To Trevor Hangan who always made an effort to assist with the U19s wherever possible throughout the year, even when he had to get across the other side of town to fulfil his Manager duties for the Prems. Finally to all our players who put on the Eagles’ jumper and ran out side by side with your team mates to have a crack on the footy field, to do your best, win, lose or draw and never dropped your heads. For the laughs we had at training and on game day is why I say thank you to all of you. It was a big year, stepping up from Juniors to play in the Senior arena. I really hope you boys stick together, learn from this year and remember that U19s footy is only for two years and is the first stepping stone and the beginning of your development for the senior footy ahead. James Monks - Most Consistent Put in a HUGE pre-season with the Eagles’ Senior players who will take you under their wings (couldn’t help myself, sorry) and show the way forward in developing you as a footballer and the improvement that will come with hard work and commitment to training. We would set high standards and expectations for ourselves given that we had lost only a few players from our previous campaign and had strong group unity. Unfortunately we wouldn’t belt out that song until Round 3 after a gutsy win at Pennant Hills. Our entire season can be looked at as one of missed chances, some below par patches in quarters of games mid-year and slow starts we just could not topple. Firstly, to the 45+ players who played Division Three this year let me say thank you to you all. It has been a pleasure to coach such a close knit group who strive to get the most from each other, even when results didn’t always go our way. There were some robust conversations had at times, but we were and still are united as one, playing with pride in ourselves, one another and the jumper. Season Review: Dan O'Connor - B&F A slow start saw us 2 and 2 after four games and finding our feet as a group with stirring wins against Pennant Hills (the arch enemy) and a dominant display against Gosford. With our season back on track and seemingly back in our hands, it would turn south. We lost our next five games to find ourselves with only two out of nine games, well below our expectations for 2015. During this period we gave ourselves chances in all these games. We led against sides in the middle of the table and felt in control at stages, but unfortunately we would get over run in them all. The strong spirit of the group that had been apparent during our early wins and all throughout preseason re-emerged over the remaining nine weeks. We were challenged on more than one occasion and this time our leaders helped us settle in games, we trusted our mates and the boys stood tall. We won six of the last nine and came home with a wet sail, defeating Wests, Pennant Hills, Norwest, Gosford, Penrith and Balmain in those final weeks to show that we can be a force in the Division Three competition when playing selfless football. 46 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK We finished sixth and were left to lament two losses to UNSW-ES who would finish last. The boys will spend a long pre-season wondering what might have been and without a shadow of a doubt prepare the best way possible for 2016 and the new season that awaits. Our season will be looked back on as one of missed chances, poor patches in quarters, slow starts and results that we alone left out on the field for our opponents to take control of. The list of thanks: Firstly, thank you to the long line of our supporters, Mums and Dads, wives and girlfriends who brave the cold winter mornings and even travel out as far as Penrith and Gosford in a convoy to watch us every week rain or shine, win or loss. Some of you screaming and yelling. You are always there for the boys, so on from me on their behalf, a big Thank you. Paul Meyer – The “glue” that held the whole show together. With Garry Bailey stepping down and taking a well deserved break from our mob this season we were without a Team Manager until the man we all know as “Roosy” stepped up and took the bull by the horns. He made my day to day at the club easier, game day is a breeze (well the admin part) and allows me to do my preparation with the boys and we are immensely grateful for the support of Paul. “Roosy” and “MoC” discuss tactics The Senior Coaching Group: To Michael Sankey, Peter Steer, Andrew Turner, Damien Minervini, John Hupfeld, Greg Thomas and Phil Bester thank you for your support and assistance during season 2015. You have made me into a much better coach over the past 12 months and our additional success on the park shows that this year. Thankyou as well for having me at your sessions and allowing me to develop and to be involved in whatever way possible. Trevor Hangan whose continued support is very much appreciated. Always first and last at the club during the week. Thanks Trev … To the Eagles Coterie Club, a special thank you for your ongoing support, it is much appreciated. A special thank you to Nathan Halliday and Sports Physio Norwest for your ongoing treatment of the players, and a huge thank you for your support and the work you have done to rehabilitate injured players and get them back on the track. Thanks! Paul Stewart for goal umpiring at almost every game, thankyou. Tracey Stewart thanks not only for the photos (which assisted Nate Campbell in his collage making each week) but also for the food you provided, even when you couldn’t make it. Anthony Baddock Runner up B&F and Players Player 47 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK Thank you to the East Coast Eagles Board for your support of myself and the group throughout 2015. We look forward to next season and many more to come. The Leadership Group: You boys helped me build and develop our culture and our standards. You are the corner stone of it and the reason that our year finished on such a positive note. Be extremely proud of the way we dealt with some unique situations this year and how you have brought this group together. The Board Man Lucas O’Connor who says week in, week out that he could have been better than Scott Pendlebury had it not been for a slight knee injury during his premiership year in Under 16’s. Thanks for helping out while you were injured "Loc”. I know how frustrating it was for you all through the year, when we were low on numbers or when we were struggling on game day and you wanted to get out there and make a difference. I have no doubt you’ll be out on the track at full flight soon throwing around your huge frame with horrid banter, but most importantly leading by example at the coal face of every contest. Nate Campbell - Coach's Award And finally thanks to my Dad, who gave me great support during matches all year. His help and suggestions throughout games and his reminder to refocus put me back into a more level space where I could be clear and concise and get the boys to focus on the challenge at hand. And to Mum who gets to every game when she can …. In closing, 2015 promised to be so much more than what has unfolded and something that I feel the whole group will walk away unfulfilled from, but driven to go the next level and play finals in 2016 under the guidance of Matt Mack and Dan O’Connor. I wish them a very fruitful 2016. It will take hard work and commitment from the entire playing group for us to jump the next hurdle. I have complete faith and trust in this group that we can do this and if we have all hands on deck from Day 1 when it comes crunch time, we will march forth, a united group and do all we can to make you our supporters and our Football Club prouder than ever before. Round 1 can’t come soon enough. Rip in boys….. Anthony Stubbs stamped his authority on this game from the first bounce and announced to the competition that he was back, but unfortunately this would be short lived when he tore his hamstring five minutes into the game. James Ford dominated with BOG and Pete Vlatko kicked four goals, with another 11 individual goal kickers. Round 2: ECE 6.9 (45) were defeated by Mac Uni 11.10 (76) Injuries at Premier Div level saw a number of the previous week’s players go up. After a good opening quarter we were unable to go on with it. Cameron Arndt had a best on ground performance while Robert Badger enjoyed an outstanding game on the back flank. We played a scrappy brand of footy and paid the price. Ryan Fitton – Billy McLeod Medallist and a Dad Round 3: ECE 5.6 (36) were defeated by UTS 9.12 (66) Round 3 was postponed due to poor weather and was played after Round 7. Goals were hard to come by and we had only registered three majors by 3/4 qtr time. Jimmy Gordon had come to play and was a standout in a game where we didn’t get going. Round 4: ECE 3.12 (30) were defeated by Pennant Hills 8.4 (52) It was wet weather footy at Mike Kenny Oval and inaccurate kicking for goal saw Penno take the points in a game we should have won. Blake Anderson announced his arrival to the Sydney AFL dominating in the backline and finding plenty of room to run in what was a tightly contested game. Matty Scholz was outstanding and played as if it was a dry day in a BOG display. Round 5: ECE 10.9 (69) defeated St. George 2.8 (20) A dominant performance and restricting St. George to only two goals for the game saw us record a 49 point win at Kanebridge Oval. Our captain Ryan Fitton led from the front, racking up countless possessions in a BOG and was well supported by Mark Skuse. Justin “Gunner” Steer went forward late in the game finding the sticks and showing his versatility playing at either end of the ground. 52 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK Round 6: ECE 6.11 (47) were defeated by Balmain 15.7 (97) We took on front runners Balmain who kicked seven goals in the second quarter to lead by 62 points at half time whilst trying to play catch up footy. A much better second half saw us outscore Balmain but the damage was already done. Brent Trewin was outstanding and Cam Arndt gave us plenty of run in a BOG performance. Round 7: ECE 6.9 (45) were defeated by Parramatta 6.11 (47) A two point loss in a tightly contested game saw Parra take the points at Gipps Rd. It’s one of the games we look back on with disappointment and proved to be the difference making the finals. Fitto once again led the way and Pete Vlatko stood tall while Lyndon Hupfeld straightened us up in front of the big sticks. Round 8: ECE 4. 4 (28) were defeated by Sydney Uni 7.10 (52) With Scotty Reed, Aaron Savage and Anthony Stubbs making returns from injury to join us in Div 1 for this away game at Henson Park, we started very slowly to trail by four goals at half time. We were a different side after the long break however and started to dominate all over the ground, kicking two goals in succession and having all the momentum early into the third qtr, when suddenly the sprinklers at Henson came on to end the game early. This was a reminder to us all on the importance of ‘doing the hard work early’. Adam Fender gave a BOG performance and Jared Patira filling in from Div 3 was a great target for us forward kicking three majors. Round 9: ECE 8.8 (56) defeated UNSW/ES 7.9 (51) The halfway point of the season saw us back at Kanebridge Oval for a win over the Bulldogs. It was the younger players in the team who led the way with Connor Stewart showing his class and a BOG performance from Lyndon Hupfeld. Crowd favourite Rodney “the Rocket” Frost playing his first Div 1 game for the season kicked two valuable majors. Cameron Arndt – Runner up B&F Round 10: ECE 7.12 (54) were defeated by Southern Power 8.8 (56) Taking on the inform Southern Power at Gwawley Oval we went in at 3/4 qtr time with a three goal deficit but came out with all guns blazing in the last quarter and looked set to steal this game. Aaron Savage provided the spark for BOG game, with Nick Crowe and Jordan McPherson dominating in the backline. A rough rub of the green in the last quarter saw us fall two points short. Round 11: ECE 15.6 (96) defeated Pennant Hills 8.6 (54) It was ‘Back to Baulko’ day and playing in front of our biggest crowd for the season. Anthony Stubbs dominated in the ruck and gave our midfield first use of the pill for a BOG performance. With nine individual goal kickers it was ECE at their very best against the old foe. Round 12: ECE 3.9 (27) were defeated by St. George 10.14 (74) Playing away at Olds Park, we were down on personnel and had Isaac Heath and Alexander Van Vliet back up for us from 19’s. Plus we had some Div 3 assistance who at the end Jordan McPherson - Most Consistent of our game rushed off to back up and play their game at a different venue. A tough match but the shining light was a BOG performance from youngster Robert Badger who had the ball on string and was well supported by Gunner. 53 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK Round 13: ECE 4. 7 (31) were defeated by Macquarie Uni 4.8 (32) Our third game decided by less than a kick that didn’t go our way and we suffered a one point loss to Mac Uni at Kanebridge Oval. Will Bradley dominated the midfield for us and it was Sammy Lewis who took BOG honours with his run out of the backline and setting up our attack. There were heavy heads after the game with the disappointment of another close loss to hurt our goal of playing finals footy. Round 14: ECE 8.10 (58) defeated UTS 9.3 (57) Another game decided by a single point, but this time we were all smiles. We played great footy in one of the toughest contested games of the season. Once again it was Fitto who led the way, and Gunner stood tall in front of the sticks to kick four goals. Alex Foxall joined us for his first game of the season and collected votes in the best players. Round 15: ECE 8.12 (60) defeated UNSW/ES 5.9 (39) An away game at Village Green where we had Scott Pierce, Zach Johns, Eugene Kruger and Matty Eastman line up in Div 1 after returning from injury. We were devastated to see Gunner go early in the game in what looked like a season ending injury. Highlight of the game was Coxy finding the big sticks for the first time in the season kicking two majors. Zach dominated at CHB in a BOG game. Round 16: ECE 11.16 (82) defeated Sydney Uni 5.12 (42) Having knocked off top five side UTS the fortnight before, we firmly had finals bound Sydney Uni in our sights. With eight individual goal kickers we played a good brand of footy at home to record a 40 point win. Will Bradley took the honours in a best on performance. Round 17: ECE 4.9 (33) were defeated by Balmain 13.6 (84) Down on personnel for our clash with Balmain we called on Div 3 players to back up for us. We encountered a very physical game at Henson Park with a number of concerning off ball incidents resulting in concussions. Our younger players stood tall and Cam Arndt played out of his skin to take the votes. With no bench after half time, players dug deep and continued to put their head over the footy. Round 18: ECE 21.10 (136) defeated Holroyd Parramatta 8.9 (57) Our final game for the season and with Prems having the bye and players returning from injury, we were able to field one of strongest line ups for the season. Andrew Browning joined us for this game, and gave us first use of the footy from the ruck contests. Scott Pierce bounced back and was a target for us forward kicking seven big ones. Jack Dimery playing his first Div 1 game for the season got plenty of touches and the experience he brought into the midfield was beneficial to our younger guys. Nick Crowe was the standout with his run and carry from the backline in an eye catching game. But this day belonged to Frosty who had announced his retirement and captained the team for the day. He led the boys onto the park and then brought the house down in the Nest with his three goals (one being a drop kick)!! Coach’s report: A big thanks to my assistant coach Richard O’Keefe who is so passionate about his footy and the work he does in preparation for the team to take the field. Thanks to our Team Manager Hayley Clift and our runner Paul Regan. Thanks also go to John Dwyer for coming to the Eagles this season and taking on trainer duties and water running for us as well. Thanks to David Arndt for his assistance Brent Trewin – Coach’s Award 54 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK on game day and to Damian Steer who was only too happy to help out whenever I asked him. Thanks also to our club coach Michael Sankey and everyone at the club. Overall, despite missing out on finals it was a very successful year for Div 1 and the development of younger players who now have senior games under their belt is very pleasing. There is some great depth in Div 1 with many players getting the call up to Prems through the season. Younger players had the opportunity to be nurtured by older inclusive players such as Fitto, Skusey, Pete Vlatko, Gunner, Will Bradley and the likes throughout the season. With three games lost that were decided by less than a kick, two more wins would have seen us play finals’ footy. Our second half of the season was very strong and included wins over Grand Finalist teams Sydney Uni and Pennant Hills so Div 1 can look forward to a good season ahead in 2016 if the hard work is done on the training track. Thanks to all the players who lined up with us this season and the commitment and pride you showed week in, week out. Enjoy your footy! .... As many of you are aware, in the final weeks of the 2014 season ECE elected to withdraw from the NEAFL competition. We set our sights on going back to being a true community based Australian Rules Football Club and re-joining the AFL Sydney competition. From a playing list perspective, this was going to take some work from many people to ensure we returned with a competitive side. At the end of last year, Rodney Frost was thrown into the role of List and Recruitment manager with his sole purpose being to ensure we locked away as many of our key players as possible for 2015. Rodney was instrumental in re-signing many of the players, along with our Captain Jon Vlatko who made many a call, had plenty of coffees and late night dinners with the most of our players. In total we ended up losing fourteen of our top twenty five NEAFL players with the majority of them returning to their home states. I can’t thank each of Rodney and Jon enough for the amount of work they put in to convince our players to commit for 2015. Our recruitment in the off season was virtually non-existent as we focussed more on the retention of our playing group. However we were still able to secure a few very handy players prior to the start of the 58 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK season as well as during the early stages of the year. Blake Anderson (WAFL) and Bryce Joynson (Campbelltown) were new recruits who joined our playing group seamlessly. We were also lucky enough to have a few players return to play with ECE including Karl Merson, Daniel Spiteri, James Ford, Trent Baker, Anthony Stubbs, Adam Fender and Peter Vlatko. All of the above were very handy inclusions with many of these players forming a key part of our side throughout 2015. Once we had confirmed commitment from the players who chose to continue with ECE, all of our effort and energy was put into developing a strong pre-season to ensure we went into the 2015 year well prepared. The coaching staff was appointed with Andrew Turner, Peter Steer and eventually Damian Minervini coming on board as assistant coaches. Philip Bester would also join us as game day assistant meaning we had a very similar team. John Hupfeld was appointed the Reserves coach and was ably assisted by Richard O’Keefe. Matt O’Connor would continue in the role as Blake Anderson – Best in Finals Div 3 coach and Greg Thomas would take on the important role of Under 19’s coach with his assistants Paul Eastman and Peter van Vliet. We had stability in our leadership group which was once again led by our Captain Jon Vlatko and we also added Andrew Browning to that group showing how much he was respected. “Strong and United” was again our trademark which was signed off by the staff, coaches and players at our pre-season camp which was held at Del Rio Riverside Resort in Webbs Creek near Wisemans Ferry. It was a very successful pre-season leading into the practice matches. Unfortunately two of the teams that had agreed to play us in pre-season practice games cancelled at late notice, so we ended up playing two intra-club games and only one practice game against Belconnen from the ACT. We saw enough in those games that our players were very fit, strong and in good form. Round 1 was a very big build up for us with the opening match scheduled against the AFL Sydney back to back Premiers in Manly Warringah. Manly had taken over our mantle as the pre-eminent AFL club in Sydney and before we had even played against them, we felt that there was already a rivalry built out of mutual respect. The entire competition was eager to see how we would go coming back into the competition and our playing group was also looking forward to the challenge. Andrew Browning – Just a Superstar 59 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK At the six minute mark of the last quarter, we found ourselves with a seven goal lead and everything looked on track for the perfect start to the season. Unfortunately,, our players switched off and we were beaten by a kick after the final siren leaving everyone involved with ECE a little stunned. However, this would prove to be a great wakeup call and used as a driving force throughout the rest of the season. We won our next five games with an average winning margin of 95 points with three of these games won by twenty goals. We went into the first break of the season on top of the ladder which was our first objective of the season ticked off. The playing group stayed stay focused and we continued to critically review each and every game on a Tuesday after training to ensure no complacency, complacen as per our Round 1 loss. We ended up having three weeks off in a Kieran Emery – Mr Dependable – 5th in B&F row as we had to wait for our actual bye, a wet weather scheduled bye and also the AFL Sydney Representative game. At least some of our players were able to get some game time as we were well represented in the Sydney Sydn team with Andrew McConnell (Vice Captain), Trent Stubbs, Andrew Browning, Kieran Emery, Jack Dimery and Karl Merson all playing a strong role in this game including Andrew McConnell receiving the best on ground award. We returned after the break winn winning our next seven games, including two games with margins exceeding 130 points. Our average winning margin during this run was 82 points showing that we hadn’t fallen into the trap of becoming complacent. We also gained a little revenge when we beat Manly Manl away at their home ground by eight goals. It was also during this period that we had what is surely our best ever regular season win against Pennant Hills at “Back to Baulko”, beating them by over ten goals. An unusually pleasing aspect of this part of the season was that we were starting to suffer some very serious injuries, with plenty of our players missing multiple weeks including Ben Bourke, Scott Reed, Eugene Kruger, Zach Johns, Damien Charleston and Andrew Browning just some of the major ones. Our younger players really stepped up during this time and acquitted themselves really well at Premier Division level. Our final three games of the minor round saw us continue our winning form including two very large margins of 137 points v UNSW/ES and 154 points against North Shore. The final round of the regular AFL Sydney season saw us with the bye; however we still finished on top of the ladder with fifteen wins and one loss for the season. We managed to post a very large percentage of 292% showing our dominance of the season to that point. Pennant Hills finished in second place just two wins behind us showing that they had also had a very strong year. And so Premier Division had to wait two weeks before our first final having securing the first week off. off We lifted the standard and intensity of training over these weeks and trained as strongly as we had through our pre-season, including very hard Saturda Saturday y sessions. We had a few injury concerns, concerns however these would benefit from the weeks off. Our first semi semi-final final was played against arch rivals Pennant Hills at Henson Park and we could tell early that we were a little rusty after a few weeks off as we continued con to turn the ball over and Penno made us pay. They held a small lead at half time before our boys were 60 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK able to put their foot down with a dominant third quarter putting the game beyond Penno’s reach. Although they were able to reduce the margin to twelve points, showing that they weren’t to be taken lightly. Again we had another weekend off and it would be a fortnight before we would play them in the Grand Final. It was a tough two weeks on the training track to ensure we would be ready for our opposition. Selection at the best of times is always a difficult job for coaching staff, however selecting a side for a Grand Final is always tough. Unfortunately we lost a very important player in James Ford who had a pre-planned trip to the USA which wasn’t ideal with Fordy being part of our best team. The coaching staff eventually agreed on our best twenty two and unfortunately a few players missed out on selection. As the senior coach, I don’t make any apologies about this, however I do empathise with players when they miss out. If it was allowed, I would pick all thirty six players who played a game at Premier Division level in 2015. For the players who did miss out, I challenge you to return in 2016 and prove us wrong just like many have done before you including Justin Steer, Darren Chapman and Steve Merkel. These are just three names of players who weren’t selected during 2008 – 2011 when we played in four grand finals in a row. Each of these players returned the following years and worked harder than ever, before finally being picked for the next grand final and becoming premiership players. Finally it was the day of the AFL Sydney Grand Final. We had done everything possible to put ourselves in the best possible position for this day and our players were ready for the challenge. The game followed a similar path to the first semi-final with Pennant Hills taking a small three point margin into half time. The challenge was there for our players to repeat their performance of a fortnight earlier, however it wasn’t to be. They say bad kicking is bad football and in grand finals this is even more so as there are no second chances. Our third quarter saw us have ten shots on goal kicking one goal, six behinds and three out of bounds on the full. We hadn’t been able to make the most of a strong wind and we went into three quarter time with a nine point lead. We had managed to keep Pennant Hills scoreless giving us some glimmer of hope. It was an arm wrestle for the first seven minutes of the last quarter and we had our opportunities to kick a few goals to extend our lead, but we couldn’t add to it. Unfortunately, we couldn’t hold on and Pennant Hills ran away with a six goal win and the 2015 Premiership. James Ford -Strong & United Whilst I am certainly very disappointed that our club wasn’t able to win the Premiership, a big part of me is very proud of not only the playing group, but also the entire football club. The fact is that we were very lucky to exist, let alone be playing off for a premiership in 2015. The challenge for all of us now is to use the loss as motivation for season 2016. This needs to burn inside everyone at our club as we start the journey once again with pre-season starting on the 24th of November 2015. There are many people that I would like to thank this year. To start with I would like to thank Peter Physick, Rodney Frost, Jon Gawley, Richard Lee and Chris Baddock. These five men are the real reason why we still exist today when these great Clubmen came running towards the challenge. They put together a plan and then continually executed the strategy throughout late 2014 and 2015. Others such as Dave Arndt and Paul Meyer joined later adding further strength to the Board. I can’t thank these guys enough for the fantastic work that they continue to put in for the East Coast Eagles. 61 EAST COAST EAGLES AFL FOOTBALL CLUB – 2015 YEAR BOOK I would like to thank Trevor Hangan for his tireless and selfless work as our team manager. He is a fantastic club man and he gives plenty of time effort and energy to the ECE cause. Thanks to the assistant coaches and match day assistants in Philip Bester, Andrew Turner, Peter Steer and Damian Minervini. As a group, our assistant coaches certainly worked hard and put in a lot of time and effort throughout the year. We also have a lot of fun along the way. Thanks to my match day runner in Damon “Pistol” Steer. I look forward to getting you back as a player next year. Thanks also to Rudy Bylsma, Lachlan Holroyd and Gav Dimery who were our trainers and main water carriers this year. Thanks to David Arndt, Richard O’Keefe, Paul Regan and John Dwyer for your outstanding contribution throughout the year at training and also the pre-season camp. We are very lucky to have this level of assistance at every training session and your support is very much appreciated by me. We had plenty of fun and a lot of laughs as a group and I look forward to each of you returning next year. Thanks to John Hupfeld for coaching Division 1 with Richard as his assistant. The role of a Reserves’ coach is never easy when you have to work around senior selection, injuries and unavailability. At times we were hit hard this year by the above but I felt that you coached well during these tough periods. Thanks also to Greg Thomas for coaching the Under 19s and Paul Eastman and Peter Van Vliet for assisting you. Thanks to Matt O’Connor and Jared Patira for looking after Division Three. I look forward to working with many of the above in season 2016 To our leadership group in Jon Vlatko, Jamie Vlatko, Ben Bourke, Jack Dimery, Eugene Kruger, Scott Reed, Andrew Browning and Stuart Turner I would like to say a big thanks. All of you continue to lead the way in all areas including on and off field. I would like to thank Nathan Halliday and his team of physios mainly Lucy, Andy and Andrew who continue to turn up week in and week out and give us a tremendous amount of support. I would like to say a huge thanks to the families who watch us play week in and week out. Your support is very much appreciated as is all the support we get from the fantastic group of wives and girlfriends at East Coast. Huge thanks to those players and supporters who sat in THE NEST this year. Your support was fantastic and you created an atmosphere that all of our players, coaches and supporters enjoyed. You also intimidated plenty of our opponents along the way. I look forward to THE NEST returning in 2016. I would like to thank the Board, the Coterie club, the Supporters, the Volunteers and our Sponsors for your support this year. We need you all back and on board with us bigger and better next year. Last but not least, I would like to thank my wonderful wife Stacy and two children Liam and Chloe for continuing to allow me to indulge in my passion. I look forward to spending more time with them over summer. And finally, I will finish this report the same way I did last year. I encourage all the players on our list to stick together and come back next year to play football together as best mates. We have a point to prove to the AFL Sydney competition with many in that community tipping us to go on a downward spiral. This club is a proud one and we have a responsibility to ensure we remain a club that is to be feared. I’m looking forward to leading the club in season 2016 and I need you all on board with me. However Page 68 has those same statistics, but ranked according to total number of First Grade games played for the East Coast Eagles in Premier Division in AFL Sydney and any NEAFL games played as the Sydney Hills Eagles in 2012, 2013 & 2014. These tables also include any Sydney AFL First Grade games played for Baulkham Hills (BHAFC) prior to and including 1999. Following the recent statistics upgrade, we now also record and recognise those Eagles games played across all grades. Sometime ago the decision was made to cease including BHAFC junior matches played after season 2008. Eventually, as those players who have progressed through from the BHAFC junior club take retirement, these statistics will appear as pure Eagles games played. However it is still historically important to also maintain a register of the number of games played for the “Club”. The definition of the “Club” for this purpose is all matches played with the Eagles (either East Coast or Sydney Hills) and BHAFC in any grade, or age group prior to and including 2008. These individual statistics are shown against each player’s name in the respective Match Statistics for each grade. The manner in which milestones will be acknowledged in this and future Year Books is as follows: • • • • 50 / 100 / 150 / 200 etc senior First Grade games with the Eagles only. 50 / 100 / 150 / 200 etc senior First Grade games. (Includes any First Grade games at BHAFC.) 50 / 100 / 150 / 200 / 250 etc total Eagles games across all grades 150 / 200 / 250 / 300 / 400 etc Club games across all Eagles’ grades and any matches played at BHAFC prior to 2008.
