Christmas Newsletter 2011
Certificate Evening
Headlines
The second half of the autumn term began
with an excellent production of Bugsy, led by
Mr Blaylock, which ran for 3 nights. It
finishes with a flurry of activities which
include Praise Assemblies, the Year 7 party,
Year 7 pantomime trip and finally, on the last
day, Carol Services in the Moravian Church.
On the 17th November
2011, Fairfield
welcomed back last
year’s Year 11s with
open arms for them
to receive their GCSE
certificates.
Throughout the term, attendance has broken
all records and currently stands at a best ever
96%. The more girls are in school, the more they can learn.
Once again, my thanks go out to parents and carers for the vital
role they play in getting girls into school, on time.
From 6pm, I, together
with members of the
Jayne Broddle with several of last years’
Head
Girl
Team,
leavers on Certificate Evening
welcomed past girls,
parents, teachers and Governors into school before escorting
them over to the Moravian Church at 6:30pm. The evening saw
girls receive their GCSE certificates as well as numerous awards
for academic achievement and progress. The church applauded
repeatedly in congratulations for all the girls who had done so
well in the exams.
Academy funding is making a difference, and not just in terms of
staffing and resources. Visitors to school will have noticed the
scaffolding that is being used to replace the draughty windows in
the 1930s block with new double glazed units. It will also be
possible for the Governors to consider replacing some classrooms
that are reaching the ends of their lives, or are not fit for 21 st
century education, in the not too distant future.
On behalf of the staff and Governors, may I wish you and your
families a very happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
Mr J. Hedley
Year 10 Parent Information Evening
On Thursday, 20th October 2011, an Information Evening was
held for Year 10 parents. The purpose of the evening was to
inform parents about the expectations and pressures that Upper
School pupils may face and to give them a chance to meet the
team of people who will be supporting the pupils at this important
time. Speakers included Mrs O’Connell (exams), Mrs Sharples
(Progress Director for Upper School), Ms Hannible (Key Stage 4
Learning Mentor), Ms Eason (Pastoral Support and Attendance),
Mrs Kindley (Careers and Progression), Mr Johnson (Work
Experience), Mrs Nisbet (Gateway) and Ms Mawdsley who
organised and hosted the evening.
A short speech by Mr Hedley
was followed by a speech from
guest speaker Jayne Broddle
who talked to us all about how
she achieved her current
position at Brother UK.
Ms
Broddle’s speech was an
inspiration to us all and made
us believe that we could
achieve anything we wanted in
Guest of Honour Jayne Broddle
life and that hard work and
determination was the key to success.
The evening concluded with everyone going to the Drama
Room for refreshments, which gave last year’s girls the
opportunity to talk to staff about what life was like since they
had left Fairfield.
Thanks are also due to Ms Eyre who organised refreshments on
the night. The evening was very well attended (85 sets of
parents) and the majority of parents found the information very
useful and would recommend it to other parents.
The evening was enjoyed by all who attended
and it was a real showcase of the success last
year’s Year11s achieved. It made me and the
Head Girl Team begin to think of the short
time we had left here at Fairfield and how we
could use it in the best possible way so that
this time next year we can receive our
certificates in the same way – with pride.
Ms Mawdsley

Contact changes
To improve communication between Home and School, the school has an e-mail and text messaging service so that we can notify
parents and carers of important announcements such as unplanned school closures, reminders of parents evenings and school events
etc.
We would like to take this opportunity to remind you how important it is that you keep your contact details up to date. If you change
your address, home, work or mobile telephone numbers or your e-mail address, can you please forward the new details to us so that
we may update our systems.
It is imperative that school is able to contact parents and carers in the event of an emergency. Thank you in advance for your
co-operation and continued support.

Year 11 Trip to Standish College
On
the
20th
October
my Spanish class went to a
school
in Standish
to
study Spanish.
A few months ago I entered a
competition in Mizz
magazine and the prize was
for me to take a friend to
meet Katy Perry backstage at
her Glasgow concert and then
to watch her on perform on
stage.
On the last day of the
summer holidays my Mum
got a phone call to say that I
had won!
Katy Perry (right) and Amy
Mottershead (second right) with friend
Charlotte Meakin and ‘Kitty Purry’!
We were all shocked and
Mum said that I wouldn’t be able to go, however she went
straight on to the computer and looked for transport to get us
there! In the end we chose to go by coach.
I telephoned my friend Charlotte to see if she wanted to come
with me and we organised the details of the trip. On the 1st of
November, we started the 5 hour journey to Glasgow. We got on
the coach and about an hour into the journey the driver
announced that there had been a crash on the motorway due to a
chemical spill. Because of where it happened, three motorways
were shut. We all thought that we would have to turn back but
we carried on with a 1 hour and 30 minutes delay.
On the journey everybody on the coach got hungry but the driver
wouldn’t stop at the service stations! When the coach stopped to
change drivers, everybody ran off and got a take-away to eat on
the coach. When we finally arrived in Glasgow, 7 hours after
starting our journey, we got a taxi to the concert arena and
waited to collect our tickets and VIP passes. Eventually, we were
taken backstage to a pink room full of jars of sweets, lollies and
candy floss. Katy Perry came into the room in a beautiful dress
and we were able to speak to her for a few minutes and have our
picture taken with her before she told us to help ourselves to the
sweets and to enjoy the concert. She seemed really nice.
When the time came for the concert to start, we were taken by
security into the arena. Katy Perry sang lots of the songs we
knew and we thought she was great at singing live.
When the concert finished we made our way back to the coach
and left Glasgow at 11.30pm. We arrived home at 4:30am and
still had to go in school that day!
Amy Mottershead, 8E
I travelled by coach with my
class to Wigan for about an
hour. When we arrived we
were shown to a room.
Here we played some
games in Spanish. It was quite fun. After the games we had
an hour for break. For the next hour we played more games in
Spanish like Bingo. It was funny and competitive, but I didn't
win. Also, we created a card on the computers in Spanish for
the role-play. After another hour of break we started the
shopping role-play. It went really well!

Years 10 & 11 Maths Revision
The Mathematics Faculty held two revision days to support both
Year 10 and Year 11 girls prior to their GCSE examinations in
November. The sessions were held on Monday and Tuesday of
the October half term holiday and ran from 08:30 – 12:45. The
girls had 4 different sessions with a short break for snacks and
refreshments in between. These sessions were in addition to
the after school classes held during term time.
The days were very well attended with almost 100 girls
attending, supported by 4 different teachers over the 2 days.
The revision sessions focused on topics identified by both
students and teachers.
Many of the girls commented on how useful the sessions were
in their exam preparation.
Friday Friendship Club
Friday Friendship has proved as popular as ever this term. We
meet every Friday lunch time in the Drama Room at 1.00pm.
It is available so that Year 7s can get together, have fun and
meet new friends. All Year 7s are welcome.

The mathematics revision days have become so highly regarded
by pupils and teachers that the Mathematics Faculty has already
planned them into the next calendar year.
We would like to thank all the girls who attended and worked
hard. We are sure that your GCSE results will reflect this effort.
We would also like to thank Mrs Parker (parent of Emma Parker
10B) for providing the hot chocolate for the girls’ break time on
the Monday.

Science Faculty News
Since the last newsletter there have been several Science-based activities to educate and to stimulate thought. As always, many
thanks to the staff, pupils, parents and visitors who have helped to make these activities such a success.
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and
Maths) Club
Having spent 6 weeks developing their projects under the
guidance of Dr Cahill, 2 teams of Year 10 pupils presented their
ideas for a novel downloadable smart phone app to encourage
inclusivity at the 2012 Olympics to a judge from
telecommunications giant BT. One team comprised Emily
Coward, Emma Bragg, Quan Ling Zhang and Alice Barry. The
other team was Emma Williams, Christina Bradbury, Lucy
Harrison, Emily Shorrock, Rebecca Dixon and Megan Tullett.
Both teams did very well, nearly winning a place in the national
finals.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Kevin
Spalding for his support.
The same pupils are now engaged in the process of making a 2
minute film about Interesting Elements. The film will be
entered in the Planet Science SciCast Competition.
Café Scientifique—22.09.11

European Day of Languages—27.09.11
The Science Faculty was pleased to take part in the European
Day of Languages again, with Dr Beckett, Mr Blackbourn, Miss
Moss, Mrs Davenport, Dr Cahill and Mrs Limen all involved in
helping pupils through a range of activities including testing
cosmetics from different countries, testing a range of European
cheeses and testing the acidity of rain water from major
European cities.
Year 10 visit Blue Planet Aquarium
Organised by Mr Rhodes and
accompanied by Miss Moss, Mrs
Davenport, Mrs Rice and Mr
Hayes, 55 Year 10 pupils visited
the Blue Planet Aquarium as
part of their GCSE Biology study
of the topic of adaptation.
Viewing the animals and
examining their adaptations
provided good stimulus knowledge before a classroom based
session asked pupils to specifically consider the adaptations of
sharks. Here is Niamh Farren’s account of the day:
On Tuesday, 1st November, Mr Rhodes arranged for his two
Year 10 Biology classes to go on a trip to Blue Planet Aquarium
for the day. We came to school in our own clothes and got on
the coach. We got ourselves into groups of 4 or 5 and when we
arrived at Blue Planet we did a fact finding mission in our
groups. We had to go around the aquarium searching for the
answers to questions we were given. After that, we went to the
classrooms and made some posters on shark adaptations. We
then had our lunch and we were allowed to walk around the
aquarium. We saw all sorts; clown fish, starfish, sting rays,
sharks and lots more and we all enjoyed the tunnel you could
walk through with the sea creatures swimming over you! Once
the day was finished we got back on the coach and the winners
of the fact finding mission were announced. Also, whilst we
were there, we all took photos to send to Mr Rhodes for a photo
competition. The four winners for this were Emma Wilde,
Sophie Roberts, Jessica Doherty and Sophie Morrow. These
pictures are now on display near the fish tank at the start of the
Science corridor.
We all really enjoyed this day out so thank
you to Mr Rhodes and the other members
of staff who took us!
Niamh Farren, 10E.
Go4Set
Organised by Dr Cahill and accompanied by Mrs Graham,
Chelsea Frater, Lucia Cicchirillo, Charlotte Hough, Ramsha
Ahmed, Bethany Slater and Eleanor Wellfair (all Year 9)
attended the launch of the Go4Set project at Tameside College.
The pupils chose to undertake a project to design an
environmentally friendly fitness centre and have started work on
this, aided by Dr Cahill and an outside engineering mentor.

Induction Days
Having received an invite from Fairfield High School for Girls to
attend transition for 2 whole days, the apprehension of joining
my new school seemed to fade. I had been excited about
leaving my Primary School - I was excited about going to a new
school, wearing a new uniform and learning new subjects plus
making new friends - as I would be stepping outside my comfort
zone, so having attended Fairfield on 7th & 8th July 2011 I could
sit back and ask myself “Why was I so worried?”.
At High School things seem rather bigger than Primary. If you
can imagine at Primary School there are only 8 classes in the
whole school and at High School there are 7 Forms in Year 7
alone. WOW. There were lots of big kids around, towering
above me.
Everyone was so helpful so I should
not have worried about getting lost in the school as there were
so many other pupils in the same situation and the older pupils
helped us, plus we got to know our way around the school in no
time.
We were given a guided tour of the buildings, got to know our
Form Tutors and by the end of day 1 we had made lots of new
friends who would be joining us in our Forms.
Having
attended an assembly and met the Tutors, Head of Year
and Head Teacher - there was so much to take in of the
standards they expected of me and what fantastic activities
were available for all - I was ready to join and could not wait for
September.
Having spent 2 days at High School and loving every minute of
it, returning to Primary School seemed a backwards step for me.
I knew that I was ready to move and luckily I only had two
more weeks before spending the next 5 years at Fairfield.
Since attending Fairfield High School for Girls I have undertaken
Languages, Technology and shown my skills at gymnastics and
dance. I have been dancing with other children of my age
over the past 7 years and I had been
eager to take part and enjoy these activities at my new school with all my new
friends.
At the end of the last
school year the new Year
7s (which included me!)
were invited to visit
Fairfield to experience
the High School life for
two days. At the start of
the
day
we
were
introduced to our Form,
Form Tutors and Mr
Hedley.
After
Mr
Hedley’s
speech
we
played ‘get to know you’
games
in
Form,
organised by some Year
Two future Fairfield pupils
9s, and we were also
enjoying
their induction days
given a booklet to
complete
over
the
summer as homework. At break and lunch we ate in the Drama
Room and the Canteen with our Forms and primary school
friends. During the afternoon we had a lesson with our Form
and the Year 9s who had been with us for the entire day.
The next day we had an entire day of lessons with some other
Year 9s who joined us at the start of the day. We all got to
know each other in Form and had lots of fun at registration with
our Forms, the Year 9s and Form Tutors.
On the second day we ate with everyone else and went outside
and enjoyed ourselves lots. By the end of
the day all the Forms were great friends, we
all knew each other’s names and couldn’t
wait to come back next year!

Sweet sale for Children in Need
On Friday, 18th November 2011, we held a ‘Sweetie Sale’ to
raise money for Children In Need.
Miss Jessop managed to acquire lots of fabulous pink popcorn
and Mrs Knowles had bagged sweets in cute Pudsey gift bags.
Staff donated sweets and the event was ably supported by Miss
Doyle, Mrs Chappell, Mrs Basterfield and Student Support staff,
who ensured safe ‘crowd control’.
This event raised a phenomenal £102.55!
Thanks to all helpers, especially Sarah Egerton, Holly CarleyHannan, Natalie Chan, Pippa Davies-Daly, and Dione Draisey to
name but a few, and, of course, everyone who bought sweeties!
For 90 minutes,
we were highly entertained by two talented, French-speaking
actors whose quirky production mixed comedy, circus tricks and
recapping on topics covered in KS3 French. Highlights of the
show included the torrential ‘rain’ that landed on Mrs Middleton
and Mr Devine and Miss Chappell taking to the stage to
show-off their love of drama!
Fauzia Syed (8B) and Georgina Gledhill (8D) also proved
themselves to be game for a laugh and showcased their cool
dancing and rapping!
Let’s hope we can do it again next year!
Thank-you to Mr Williams for organising the event. Vive la
France!

Young Enterprise
Bugsy Malone
This half term in Young Enterprise we have
worked really hard, including new members
joining and changing our company product
completely!
We first decided our company, ‘Your Dreams’,
would hold fairs for birthdays, proms, garden
parties, etc., but unfortunately our market
research told us it wasn’t such a great idea!
Following this, we had a discussion and decided that we would
start from the beginning with designing phone cases!
We are now working towards a Trade Fair on 7th December in
Manchester, where we will have our own stall at the Christmas
Markets to sell our BlackBerry Curve phone cases with our
original designs. We are all looking forward to this and we
hope to do very well and sell as much as possible!
As well as this, Bethany Hamlin, 10E, has recently taken on the
role of IT Director and Alice Barry, 10C, became our Human
Resources Manager. This means they are now members of our
company and we are
very pleased that they
have
joined
us.
Everyone is doing
really well and our
company is going to
be the best we
can make it!

Careers and Aimhigher Progression Adviser
I joined the school in September this year as Fairfield’s Careers
and Aimhigher Progression Adviser. I work closely with other
members of the Progression Team and our Connexions Adviser
to ensure that all our pupils have the information, advice and
guidance that they need to make good decisions about their
future.
Before coming to Fairfield I worked as a Graduate Officer for
Aimhigher. This was a government initiative designed to raise
aspirations and encourage young people to consider university
and Higher Education as an option for them. Within this role I
designed and delivered 1 to 1 and group activities in schools
and colleges around Tameside to give young people more
information about university, student life and the benefits of
Higher Education. As I am a university graduate myself, I also
acted as a role model for the young people that I worked with.
Within Fairfield, I help our pupils to consider their next steps, be
that Year 9 options choices, college and apprenticeship
applications, university and later careers. I run a ‘Progression
Drop In’ at lunchtimes within the library which means that pupils
can come to me and ask any questions they have about their
futures. For those that need a little more support, I meet with
them one on one to signpost useful information sources and
advise them on the best routes to the careers they aspire to. I
also create information leaflets and bulletins to keep our pupils
up to date on issues such as student finance and college open
days.
I believe that good quality information, advice and guidance can
make a real impact on the lives and choices of young people
and I am glad to be a part of this at Fairfield.
Welcome to the world of “Bugsy Malone”. The newest Fairfield
Production “Bugsy” is the story of the all-round nice guy trying to
find his way in the streets of 1920s New York, where rival gangs
fight it out with the infamous splurge guns.
He tries to
manoeuvre his way through this crime filled world, while at the
same time trying to get the girl and always look effortlessly cool.
The production ran for 3 nights in early November and was a
great success. The highlight was when, on the final night, the
cotton wool pies used in the finale were swapped for real shaving
foam – much to the surprise of the cast and audience! Everyone
ended up very messy, but all were proud of their performance.
Over the months of rehearsals the cast became great friends and
had lots of fun together. It’s an experience none of us would
swap and one we will always remember. We
would like to thank everyone involved in
making the production a success and for their
hard work, especially Mr Blaylock and Mr
Hardman.
April Stanhope, 11D
Fund raising events
Staff and pupils took part in a ‘non-uniform’ day on the 18th
November in aid of Francis House hospice. The grand total of
£955.07 was raised which will be of great help.
On the same day the following activities took place which raised
£300.00 for Children in Need:

8G held a ‘Guess the number of sweets in the jar’
competition and raised almost £35.00.

8B raised over £60.00 by selling cakes to staff and pupils.

Mrs. Bradbury baked cakes and cookies for staff to buy
and raised £30.00.

Mrs. Knowles and Miss Jessop sold sweets and raised over
£102.00. Thanks to staff and pupils who donated the
sweets.

8D brought in and sold cakes and raised over £71.00.
Congratulations and thank you to everyone who gave their time,
money and effort to raise money for these worthwhile causes.

Animalz Take Over Year 8 Geography
Jessica Lyons
On the 21st October, ‘Animalz
Take Over’ came into school to
teach the Year 8s more about
the rainforest.
My name is Jessica Lyons, I am 12
years old. The sport that I do is Muay
Thai or Thai boxing, as it is more
commonly known. I was 18 months old
when my dad took me to a Thai boxing
gym in Oldham to train. Muay Thai is a
3000 year old martial art and is the
national sport of Thailand. The boxers
use punches, elbows, knees and kicks
to defeat their opponent.
I am
currently the British Thai boxing champion and on the England
team. I am going to Bangkok in March 2012 to fight in the first
ever world championships for children.
As we entered the Hall we saw
an array of different animals.
The lady from Animalz Take
Over was showing us a PowerPoint on the rainforest and we
were also shown a wonderful variety of rainforest animals.
Amongst others there was a small tree frog, a millipede,
cockroaches and even a snake! We were allowed to touch, feel
and hold them. It was very exciting! Then a couple of people
got to hold a lizard, it looked very green and scaly! We then
had a chance to look at a huge tarantula!
Afterwards we thanked the lady very much then washed our
hands with sanitizer.
Overall the day was amazing! The whole of
Year 8 loved it and it would be good to do it
again!

I train 5 days a week at the moment and the training is
extremely hard and vigorous. There are a lot of cardio vascular
exercises and I have to stretch to be supple. I also do exercises
for strength like press ups, sit ups and squats. I then go and
train on the pads or bags to build up my skills and stamina.
Before we fight in the ring we have to do a traditional dance
called a wai kru or ram muay. This dance is performed as a way
of paying respect to our master or teacher and ends when we go
and mime the demise of our opponent which can be by a bow
and arrow or by digging their grave – this is to kill the
opponent’s spirit!
Every gym has a slightly different wai kru depending on what the
master wants them to do. We also wear a mongkon on our head
and a kruang, which goes around our right arm. These have
prayers inside them and have been blessed by the monks in
Thailand. We then fight our opponent over 3 or 5 rounds
depending on experience and if it is for a title of not.
My Dad is a master of Muay Thai and I am an instructor now,
which means that I am able to teach the class. I am currently
training very hard for the World Championships next year.
Please wish me luck as this will be the
hardest thing I have ever done and I will
have to fight up to 5 times a week against
the best in the world.

Maths Puzzle of the Week
The Maths Puzzle of the Week has
continued through the autumn term.
The
puzzles
aim
to
stretch
mathematical thinking and logic skills,
as well as providing a chance for
entrants to win prizes!
A new puzzle is given every green Monday. Pupils receive a copy
in their form folders, a copy is sent electronically to form tutors
and the puzzle is also displayed on the television screens at
reception and in the specialist subject gallery, as well as on
notice boards in the specialist subject gallery, Maths Faculty
corridor and all Maths classrooms. Pupils can enter by giving
their answers, along with their name and form, on paper to Miss
Bates in the Maths Faculty up until break time on the following
blue Wednesday.
The puzzle is open to all pupils in the school and points are
awarded for correct answers, any extension beyond the basic
requirements of the puzzle, and also just for entering! High
scorers are entered into a leader board and, every half term, the
top 3 girls in the leader board will receive Gold, Silver and
Bronze prizes and certificates.
Prize winners for the first half of the autumn term were Emma
Bragg (10B), Rachael Bragg (8B), Rachel Chen (8G) and Emily
Coward (10B). Winners received a certificate and gift voucher in
the praise assemblies later in the summer term. Well done girls!
Below is a previous Maths Puzzle of the Week for interested
parties to try! Good luck!

We heard Chelsea, a
DJ on Key 103 radio
station, talking
about the
Manchester
Dogs’
Home, and how
they needed more
food,
toys
and
blankets
as
the
winter is coming.
Unfortunately,
a
week after, we heard this Manchester Dogs’ Home was robbed.
They took £1,500 out of the safe; they also took dog medicines
making it harder to treat sick dogs. The keys to the Dogs’ home
van were also stolen and they also took the grand prize that
was a plasma TV for a raffle that they were doing to try to raise
money. Fortunately, John Lewis kindly donated another TV to
carry on the raffle. When we found out what had happened we
decided the Dogs’ home needed our help!
We started this on the 5th December and collected until Tuesday
13th December. We collected over 50 varieties of items, dog
mixers, biscuits, Christmas stockings, sausage meat, meat, toys,
blankets and much more. We are very grateful to all the people
that took part in this event and supported us by bringing in
items. We are thankful for your help; we couldn’t have done it
without you!
On Wednesday, 14th December Sophie Chesney and Alex Molloy
will be taking the collection down to the Dogs’ Home and will
explain what Fairfield had done to help the staff and dogs.
Thanks again from 9E and Mrs Lees.

Anti-Bullying Week
Anti-bullying Week took place between the 14th – 18th
November and the theme was ‘the right to feel safe’. In this
week a number of events took place in order to raise awareness
of this issue. Each Year Group had an assembly around the
theme. We had a non-uniform day which raised £956.07 for
Francis House Children's Hospice which is the Head Girls Team’s
chosen charity. There was also a display of anti-bullying posters
produced in Life Skills displayed in the foyer. Years 8 and 10
were asked to complete a questionnaire about levels of bullying
in the school and how the students felt that it had been dealt
with. The results of this survey will be fed back to Years 8 and
10 through assembly time.
The whole of Year 8 are putting together entries for ‘Step into
the NHS’, a competition aimed at raising awareness in young
people of the range and diversity of Careers in this massive and
important organisation.
To launch it, on the 28th November Nicki Smith, the Clinical
Educator at Tameside Hospital, came into Fairfield to deliver a
talk on the subject. This proved interesting and engaging for the
pupils who were given a variety of job titles which they had to
put into various categories. To follow this up, the pupils are
researching the subject as part of their Careers programme in
Lifeskills. Most will work in groups preparing their entries for the
competition – an advertisement for a job role and the CV of an
ideal candidate for the job.
There are some good prizes on offer so it’s now up to Year 8s to
deliver!

PE Department News
Reminder to parents and pupils
Tameside Cross Country
In line with Ofsted expectations, we have introduced a policy
where pupils who are excused from doing practical must bring a
note and also bring and wear PE kit and get involved in the
lesson by taking on a different role. eg. coach, umpire, scorer.
We are also trying to ensure the health and safety of our pupils
by asking that they all wear proper training shoes that will
support and cushion their feet. This has been an on-going
problem with some pupils, who have disregarded the PE uniform
code. Pumps/plimsolls and Converse-type shoes are not to be
worn. Please see Fairfax for clarification (p30/31).
Competition
A few Tameside competitions have now been completed and
Fairfield has once again picked up a number of trophies. Well
done to all the girls who have competed in competitions so far
this year.
Mrs Dolan
Football
Both the Fairfield U14 and U16
teams have continued to play
well in the Tameside Monthly
Football League competitions
with the U14s lying joint 5th and
the U16s in 1st place at the
moment. Unfortunately, the U14
December
competition
was
cancelled owing to high winds
and rain. However, the teams have their final competition in
January.
The Year 7 team played in a Tameside 5 a-side football
competition this half term, beating Denton and St.Thomas More
in the first round. On December 2nd the girls played Copley, Hyde
and Alder in the Final, eventually having a playoff against Copley.
Fairfield beat them 1-0 to become Tameside Champions. The
team will represent Tameside at the Greater Manchester Final in
the New Year.
Fairfield Year 7 team: Beth Taylor - Captain (7B), Megan McHugh
(7G), Mackenzie Holland (7D), Imogen Ward (7B), Megan BanksCarr (7G), Devon Upton (7A), Kneve Ward (7B). These girls will
be playing in another Tameside competition at Curzon Ashton in
January.
Badminton
Straight after half term, Leah
Bancroft 11D, Jenny Smith 11D,
Emma King 11A and Rebecca
Lai 11G played in the Tameside
KS4 Badminton competition.
They won both of their heats
and went on to become
Tameside Champions. The KS3
team of Hannah Bancroft 9G,
Beth Thorley 8D, Emma Nathaniel 9B and Samantha Ashton 9F
have won their heats and also went on to win the final which
was played at Copley on December 14th.

Twenty six girls represented Fairfield at the Tameside Cross
Country Championships at Curzon Ashton on Thursday 17th
November. For once, the weather was dry and relatively warm
and all of our runners completed the course. We had some very
good individual results, as well as team results. In Year 7 race,
Megan McHugh came 5th and Flora McConnell 17th. The Year 7
team came 5th out of all the secondary schools in Tameside. In
the U14 race, Darcy Hobson came 6th, Lauren Thomas 11th, Katie
Gregson 12th, Fay Cripps 13th and Tabitha Green 15th. These 5
girls’ combined scores made them U14 Tameside Champions. The
Year 10/11 team came 4th overall with some excellent results
from Emily Shorrock, who won a bronze medal, Olivia Burke who
came 9th and Kirstie Williamson who came 21st. Fairfield also won
the Overall Girls’ Trophy which we last won in 2009. Megan
McHugh, Darcy Hobson, Emily Shorrock and Olivia Burke will be
representing Tameside at the Greater Manchester Cross Country
Championships at Longford Park on Saturday 4th February.

Dance Xtreme
In November, Mrs Loney
informed Year 10 that there
was a dance competition
called ‘Dance Xtreme’ held at
Copley High School, the same
competition our school had
entered last year. Hearing
this, 12 of us got together
and worked hard for many
weeks,
practicing
every
Monday
and
Thursday,
getting a dance together. The whole dance was choreographed
entirely by us, which was very hard work but we all really
enjoyed it.
We would like to thank Mrs Loney for entering us and helping us
with the costumes and giving up her time after school to
supervise us whilst practicing! Although we didn’t win, we had so
much fun and are hoping to get the chance to enter next year
where we will have more experience so be bigger and better and
hopefully bring back a trophy! Thanks also to everyone who got
involved for putting in a lot of your spare time, well done!!

A Focus on the Geography Department
GCSE: Year 11 Geography
The girls have now been examined in 50% of the GCSE
Geography course. Revision sessions for girls re-sitting the
Year 10 (Extreme Environments) exam will start in late January
and currently some girls are completing a re-sit of their Year 10
Controlled Assessment after-school, with a deadline of the end
of January.
BTEC: Year 11 Travel and Tourism
Year 11 BTEC Travel and Tourism pupils are being pushed to
get assignments finished as quickly as possible at the moment.
This is to ensure they have the opportunity at the end of the
year to upgrade work from pass to merit to distinction. To
support girls, the department is arranging sessions for girls to
work with us at lunchtimes and after-school to complete
current assignments.
KS3: Year 9 Geography
Year 9 girls have just finished their Design a Sustainable City
project and the department is really pleased with the quality of
the designs and written justifications. Whilst there have been
a wide range of pupils that have made fantastic achievements
the following girls work has been highlighted for praise;
Bethany Slater, Mia Jones, Laura Spalding, Eleanor Holt,
Charlotte Hough, Faye Cole, Rebecca Farrand and Danika-Lily
Tanker.
Geographer of the Week
The Department has started a new award this year called
‘Geographer of the Week’. It is available for any pupil that
studies Geography or Travel and Tourism and pupils are
nominated for excellent achievement. Each weekly winner
receives a certificate, a book and a pat on the back! The
winners so far this half term are Jemma Hemmings-Fitton (8F),
Hollie Smillie (7A), Sophie Stephens (11B) and Mia Jones (9F).
Digimaps for Schools
The Geography Department has subscribed to a website called
‘Digimaps for Schools’ which contains digital versions of a wide
range of Ordnance Survey maps covering the whole of the UK.
The subscription is available for pupils, for educational use
only, and is an excellent resource to support their studies.

BrainPop
The girls also have access to an excellent website called
BrainPop which contains hundreds of educational animated
videos on subjects such as Geography, History, RE, Science,
ICT, Technology, English and Maths. The videos can be
viewed to support their current studies (mainly at Key Stage 3)
and girls can also browse the site looking at any clips that
interest them.

Craft Club
Craft Club is a free activity held in the school Library every
Tuesday from 2.45pm to about 4.00pm.
All the materials are provided for the girls to have a go at
various crafts, some of which they may not have tried before.
Mia Jones (9F) “Design a Sustainable City”
KS3: Year 8 Geography
Using their experiences from the ‘Animals Take Over’ road
show, the Year 8 girls have completed a creative writing essay
called ‘I’m a celebrity, get me out of here’. The girls had to
write a fictional story explaining how they would survive in the
Tropical Rainforest and escape to safety.
The English
Faculty have supported the girls excellently with preparation
lessons on effective creative writing skills. Again, there were
a huge number of excellent entries. The Department would
like to nominate the following girls for praise: Chelsea Allen,
Isabel Carabine, Neeshat Faruk, Hollie Hilton, Ellie
Houldsworth, Ashley McLaughlin Watt, Natalia Olejniczak,
Emma Shaw, Rachel Bragg and Abbie Carney.
KS3: Year 7 Geography
In the first term of Year 7, Geography pupils study the unit
‘The Map World’. The girls have been learning about all
different types of maps such as atlases, Ordnance Survey maps
and online interactive maps and have been learning to draw
different maps. Chloe Worrall gained the top score in the
Ordnance Survey Map Skills Test with 30/30. Well done Chloe!

Recent projects have included cross stitch, scrapbooking,
sewing, papercrafting, gift bags, card making, sock bunnies and
decorating canvas tote bags. Our crafters have a great time
working together and producing a unique item from start to
finish.
New members from all years are always welcome - just have a
word with Mrs Mutter in the Library.
Staffing changes
Mr Oles will be getting married over the Christmas period, as
will Miss Doyle. We wish them both, and their partners, all the
very best for their respective big days and for the future.
Mrs Walkden has temporarily taken over the post of Year 7
Progress Coordinator from Mrs Marlow.
Mrs Marlow has been appointed Temporary Progress Director
for Key Stage 4 whilst Mrs Sharples is on leave.

Planning for Year 9 Progression and Mentoring
8D Cake Sale for Children in Need
Next term, all pupils in Year 9 will be making their subject
choices in preparation for Key Stage 4.
We put a lot of work into providing information, advice and
guidance aimed at helping our pupils and their parents to
understand the importance of decisions made at this time.
Some important dates for pupils and parents to be aware of are:
Wednesday, 18th January – Mentoring Day assembly for Year 9
pupils.
There will be a letter home to parents/carers.
th
Wednesday, 8 February – Year 9 Mentoring Day.
Individual mentoring session for each pupil with parents/carers.
Tuesday, 23rd February – Year 9 Parents’ Evening.
An opportunity for parents to discuss progress and effort with
their daughters’ teachers.
Wednesday, 14th March – Progression Evening.
This evening will provide pupils and parents/carers with a wealth
of information about subject choice and progression pathways.
Our Form (8D, Miss
Moss) organised a
cake sale. We had
arranged for it to be
on the 17th
November. It was in
the Drama Room at
lunchtime. The money
we made went to
Children in Need. The
whole Form made and brought in cakes. We had lots! They all
sold and at the end we had raised £71.00. This was a great
amount as we were not expecting so much.
Thank you to everyone who brought cakes in and bought them.
As well as these events, there are many other activities in school
which will help pupils to understand the processes involved in
making subject choices.

Year 10 Lionheart Challenge
This event took place on the 6TH December and involved the whole of Year 10 who took over the
Hall for this exciting and challenging activity. This is now the fourth year we have used the
‘Lionheart Organisation’ to run the Enterprise challenge and once again, the day was extremely
successful.
Year 10 were assigned teams with a variety of expertise and crucially had to bond in their teams
with girls they did not know. The theme of the challenge was set once the girls had settled.
They had to invent, cost and market a new product to assist in crime prevention.
The judges for the day were finance expert, Yvonne Bailey (Business teacher, Ashton 6th Form),
teamwork judge and ex-pupil Caroline Williams (Enterprise co-ordinator, Droylsden Academy) and Mr Johnson, playing the ‘Alan Sugar’
role!
As the day developed, the girls were set challenging targets and had numerous deadlines to meet. It was generally felt that the
financial aspect was the most difficult as they had to consider the various costs involved, estimate volumes of sales, consider various
sources of funding and work out a balance sheet to come up with the amount of profit that could be generated.
There were some very good ideas for products, most of which utilised current technological developments, but also used some
imaginative ‘forward thinking’ to meet the brief. A popular theme was personal safety with a variety of jewellery type products
designed which incorporated GPS trackers, cameras, and alarm systems. The winning team on the day came up with the ‘Badge-It’, a
range of personalised badges which had a variety of safety features. They produced an imaginative marketing plan which just gave
them the edge over their nearest rivals! They will be representing the school in next summer’s Regional finals.
The whole Year Group were a credit to the school with their enthusiasm and excellent behaviour. Many had made new friends in their
groups by the end of the day. Special mention must go to Tamara Page and Skye Riley who were given special awards by Lionheart
for their efforts on the day.

Competition winner
Ellie Murray, 7F, recently entered a singing competition with Key 103 radio station. Ellie was selected to become one of 5 finalists and
it has now been announced that Ellie has won the competition. This means that she will sing live at Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester
and has the opportunity to record a CD.
More information will follow in the next Newsletter.
Well done Ellie!
Gymnastic success for Morgan Finnegan
My gymnastics career started in 2002 when I was 4. I used to watch my older brother do gymnastics and I was so eager to start! Throughout my career as a gymnast I have faced many
challenges and competitions, correcting my mistakes as I went on. My first real competition
was in 2005. It was the Rochdale Invitational. Here, I competed on vault and floor. I came 1 st
overall!
By my 5th competition, I was working at national level which resulted in me going down the
Great British Route rather than the Challenge Cup Route. The British Route is for elite
gymnasts who are considered for the British Squad to represent Great Britain.
Following further competitions and championships around the country I travelled to Stoke on
Trent this year to perform in the English Championships. Although I did not win any medals I achieved enough points to be invited to
train with the England Squad in Aldershot.
I and 2 other team mates went to Aldershot to train with the England Squad for 3 days. It was really hard work but a great
experience – we were asked back in September to train for 3 days in York. We stayed in dormitories – 6 to a room – which gave us a
chance to make new friends and share experiences.
Our next competition was the British Teams Championship – with other team mates I travelled to
Guildford with our Coach to compete. The likes of Olympians Beth Tweddle and Hannah Whelan
competed in this competition.
In June this year I went on to compete in the Individual British Espoir Championship for the
second time in Guildford. It was not my greatest performance as I had 2 injuries previously – a
fracture to my 5th metatarsal and fracture to my thumb. My mother sent me to school with a bag
of ice for my thumb and said I’d be OK! Mrs Loney rang my mother to take me to hospital for an
x-ray. However, I achieved a good enough score to stay on the British route. My next
competition was in Vladimir, Russia!
We travelled to Russia on the 9th of November. We took a plane from Manchester to Frankfurt, then Frankfurt to Vladimir, then a
three hour coach drive to our hotel! It was such a long day, especially with the 4 hour time difference!
On the 10th of November we attended the open ceremony of the competition. They were speaking Russian so we had no idea what
they were saying but we continued to smile and wave! We later went back to the hotel.
On the 11th of November we trained for the first time in the new environment. Everyone was really friendly and made us feel very
welcome. Our training session went well and set us up with a positive attitude for the competition the next day.
Our competition was on the 12th. Everyone was really nervous because it was our first international! There were gymnasts from
Hungary, Moscow, Vladimir and, of course, Great Britain! The competition was a great success overall. I
achieved my highest score ever on beam and floor. Also, I made my first ever final on floor and reserve
finalist for the beam! I really enjoyed competing because everyone was really supportive and encouraging.
The GB team came 4th out of 15 teams!
On the 13th was the day of our finals...We all did well (again!) and I came 8 th on floor out of everyone,
increasing my score from the previous day! After the competition all the Russian girls and boys were asking
for photos with us, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, Facebook names and they even gave us little souvenirs!
It was a great competition and I enjoyed performing my floor.
In the next few days we went around Vladimir sightseeing, shopping and to restaurants!
Our coach treated us to a pizza on his birthday for the success over the few days!
It was by far the best experience of my whole career! I enjoyed every moment with
everyone. I didn’t want to leave although I missed everyone back home!

Penalty Notices for Non-School Attendance
Section 444(A) of the Education Act 1996 empowers the Local
Authority to issue Penalty Notices in cases of unauthorised
absence from school. This means that when a pupil has
unauthorised absence of 10 sessions (5 days) or more in any
12 week period (where no acceptable reason has been given
for the absence) or if their child persistently arrives late for
school after the close of registration, their parents or carers
may receive a Penalty Notice fine of £50, which must be paid
within 28 days. If payment is made after 28 days but within
42 days, the penalty is increased to £100. Where a fine
remains unpaid after 42 days, the matter will be referred to
the Borough Solicitor, who will consider instigating criminal
proceedings.

Staff Training Day (2)
In law, an offence occurs if a parent or carer fails to secure a
child’s regular attendance at school. Tameside Education
Welfare Service, in conjunction with schools and Greater
Manchester Police, will use these powers as an early deterrent
to prevent patterns of unauthorised absence developing.
Parents may also receive a Penalty Notice without a warning
letter for the offence of failing to secure regular school
attendance for the following reasons:
 If their child is stopped on a truancy sweep more than once
 If they go on holiday in term time without the school’s
permission or are late returning from an extended holiday

* This is a change from 6th July
 If they have not co-operated with the Education Welfare
Service following a referral from school after they have taken steps to address the absences with the parent/carer and
pupil
 If their child fails to return to school following a fixed term
exclusion
The Education and Inspections Act 2006 also makes it an
offence if a parent fails to ensure that their child is not in a
public place during the first 5 days of a fixed term or
permanent exclusion. Penalty Notices may be issued in
relation to this matter.
The Local Authority and schools are committed to providing
the best possible future for your child. If you have concerns
about your child’s attendance at school or if you are
experiencing any difficulties, contact school and ask for help.
Support is also available from the Education Welfare Service on
telephone number 0161 342 2297.

Can all parents and pupils please note that all unclaimed lost

Please collect items before end of Lunchtime, Friday, 21st
