Droylsden residents welcome Metrolink
with family fun day
W
ith face painters, balloon artists and local
craft and activity stalls, Villemomble
Square became a hive of activity last Saturday
to celebrate the recent arrival of Metrolink in
the town centre.
Local residents came out in force to support the
event which was organised by the Droylsden Town
Team with the support of the Executive Leader of
Tameside Council, Councillor Kieran Quinn.
Live entertainment was provided by Elite
Cheerleaders, Fairfield Tigers, Street Dance, Duke
Street Music Project and Droylsden Christian
Church Choir with a Taekwondo demonstration
from Droylsden Taekwondo Club and magic show
from Smiley Productions. Compere Jason Wood
from New Image Lighting kept proceedings running
smoothly and gave sweets away to the crowds,
donated by local stores Tesco and Wilkinson.
At midday, Teddy Tameside welcomed Metrolink’s
mascot, Met Man, to Droylsden and posed for
photos with Cllr Quinn on the new Metrolink
stop.
Cllr Quinn commented: “It’s great to see so
many residents here in the town centre for the
event and to show their support for our local
businesses and retailers. Droylsden is a vibrant
town with lots to offer and the Metrolink will
open up the town to new visitors to come and
see what we’re all about. This was certainly
the case during the weekend before the official
launch when Droylsden town centre was full of
people who had travelled in on the tram. This
encourages me that early signs are that the trams
will be a big hit with the public, a position I am
sure will continue going forward.”
Peter Cushing, Transport for Greater
Manchester’s Metrolink Director, said: “We
aim to support the local communities across
our network as far as we can and are very happy to get involved
with the family fun day in Droylsden. We’ve received a positive
response to the new service so far and look forward to the line
establishing itself as a convenient and hassle free way for residents
to travel over the next few months.”
Droylsden Town Team and Metrolink’s free family fun day took
place in Villemomble Square, just opposite the new Metrolink stop,
from 10am until 3pm on Saturday 16 February 2013.

Stalybridge will soon be
rid of its biggest eyesore.

FAREWELL AUNTY LYNDA
On January 22nd Lynda Jane
Meeks passed away, famous
locally as part of folk group
Five Penny Piece and as part
of Meeks family who have sold
footwear in Tameside since the
early 1900’s. We spoke with
Deborah Turner at The Shubar
who pays tribute to ‘Aunty
Lynda’.
“ I remember we went to watch
Five Penny Piece at the Free
Trade Hall in the 1970’s, it was
packed out. She became our
own celebrity really but she
always bought her shoes from
us for her work and playing out
(which she did a lot of!). Being
Dad’s sister we obviously had
regular visits and it was never
a dull moment when she was
around. When she worked at
Tescos, which was for about 12
years, she was one of the most
popular members of staff, and
she affectionately named it
Tenko’s! “
Deborah says she would have
loved the send off from her
friends and family.

“Yes it was a grand send off,
she had the horses the black

flowers.All her colleagues from
Tesco clapped her into church
and clapped her out of church.
The Five Penny Piece songs
were playing throughout the
service and everyone was
crying, even her little dog Daisy
was there to see her off. At her
checkout at Glossop Tesco the
staff put candles and flowers on
her till and there was a bucket
too with all donations going to
Christies in Manchester and it
raised over £500 in a matter of
days.”
Cregan Guilty
Dale Cregan admitted to
being guilty of the murders
of PC’s Fiona Bone and
Nicola Hughes. Ge denies
the charge of the murder
of David Short and his son,

murder charges in the
months before the attack
on the police officers. Nine
other men face charges
relating to the incidents.
You Choose Cuts
You Choose, a flagship
programme to support
community groups across
the area, is to be cut in
2013 by £107,000 following
a meeting of Tameside
Councils Executive Cabinet.
Grants to groups will be
further restricted to a
maximum of £1,500, was
£2,500.
Royal Approval For
Droylsden Field
A field in Droylsden has
been granted the royal seal
of approval thanks to the
hard and dedicated work
of the town’s community.
A friends group worked
closely with the ward
councillors to submit an
application for Copperas
Field, off Fairfield Road, to
be re-named the Queen
Elizabeth II field and last
week they were told the
bid had been successful. To
celebrate, the campaigners
have had a brass plaque
made which will be set in
a brick wall closer to its
official unveiling in May.
Energy Scheme Saves
£000’s
Tameside had the highest
take-up rate for the GM
Fair Energy scheme with
more than 4,300 people
signing up – the highest
proportion of households
(4.6 per cent) to register
in any one borough. More
than 35,000 people signed
up altogether – with
an average saving per
household of around £122
a year. Residents across
Greater Manchester are to
save more than £3m as part
of the UK’s biggest energy
switching scheme.

LANTERN PARADE HUGE SUCCESS
who had seen another similar
initiative in another part of
Hyde who wanted to bring
this here to grow what we
already had into the event we
held. This has involved around
460 children and their families
at this event.”
How long did it take to
prepare for the parade?
O
n Wednesday
February 6th
Flowery Field School
staged the hugely
popular Lantern Parade
which had children and
their families taking
their illuminated
lanterns around the
local area.
Head teacher Mr. Alvin
Fell explained a little
more about the parade
and how it all started.
“Well fortunately the infant
children, which is probably
a third of the school, had
made their lanterns before
Christmas and then we
worked with a couple of
specialist artists who came in
to inspire the children with
a large dinosaur and other
designs. They worked with us
for about three weeks and we
have had parents and helpers
come in as well. Lots of the
other lanterns in the parade
were simply us giving the
children free range with their
imagination.”
Is it something that fits
to the curriculum ?
“ Not especially, it’s a
community cohesion event so
this area has a lovely feeling
on this February evening
and brings people of all ages
and different aspects of the
community together.”
“We have had a tradition at
this school for the last three
years now with the infants at
Christmas partytime bringing
their lanterns up to the
junior school and having a
firework celebration. This then
coincided with an idea from
Councillor Peter Robinson
8 About Tameside
Apart from parents, children and
staff you have received other
support too ?
“We have had support from
New Charter, the local
housing association, helping
with cash, provided hot
refreshments and helped
with the marshalling of the
parade. The local councilors
and area committee have
also supported us along with
the families of those who
attend the school. This is the
first time we have done this
Flowery Field Lantern Parade
which has grown out of our
own internal event which has
been established for a few
years so we are really pleased
with how it all went.”
Do you hope this will
become an annual event ?
“It’s an interesting idea. When
you have a successful event
like this everyone says ‘lets
do it again next year’. We may
do it again next year, we may
leave it a while to keep it fresh,
we might come up with a
different idea. The good thing
about working at this school
is the staff are always up for a
new challenge – we may do it
again or we may do something
else.”
With thanks to Mr. Fell, the
children, parents and staff at
Flowery Field School.
FLIPPIN’ SUCCESS
The annual Pancake Flipping Contest took place at
Ladysmith Shopping Centre on February 12th. The
competition included teams from the Ladysmith Pub, JD
Sports, Tameside 4 Good, Ladysmith Shopping Centre and
Tameside Reporter. This year it was a tense final between
JD Sports and Ladysmith Shopping Centre with the team
of the latter winning the gold frying pan trophy!
The event was in aid of the Mayor’s charity and the
Mayoress, Councillor Brenda Warrington, was on hand to
present the winners prizes.
Women
at the Wheel
Guide Bridge MOT launched their ‘Women At
The Wheel’ scheme several years ago and it’s
proved to be popular with female motorists
of all ages.
PURRFECT
Next Generation Youth
Theatre in Mossley are
rehearsing for their latest
production CATS! The
musical is being staged 22nd to
27th April 2013 and will be the
first time the production has
been released for amateur use.
More details about the show
in our next issue.
At special evenings and events the team are on hand to
explain some of the basics about your car including tyre
care and safety. The garage provides this free, friendly,
one-to-one workshop session where they will show you
how to carry out basic, essential maintenance checks,
including checking and topping up the oil, water and antifreeze. Proud to be the most female friendly garage in the
area why not call for more details about the next Women

HIS MASTER VACATES
RIDE IN TAMESIDE
Horse riding is still
a popular past time
around the UK and
here in Tameside too
where luckily there is
a school located in Top
Mossley that can assist.
Stamford Riding
Stablesprovide lessons for
children and small adults, at
very reasonable prices in a
safe enclosed riding arena.
As well as riding lessons they
also teach people how to
look after horses and ponies,
and train students towards
ABRS and BHS stable
management exams.
At weekends they have
junior trainee groups for the
more dedicated riders and
after Easter will be looking
at starting a Pony Care Club,
for riders and non-riders,
which lets the children work
towards rosettes, rather than
badges, and certificates, a
bit like Brownies and Cubs
with ponies. This is likely to
be Mondays 4.30 - 5.30 each
week through the spring and
summer.
HMV in Arcades Shopping
Centre is due to close after
the company went into administration in January. The
store opened it’s doors in 2005
with singer Simon Webb from
boyband BLUE. Another store
closure for Ashton, let us hope
there’s some good news coming
soon for the town.

THEATRE ROYAL
T
he Theatre Royal in
Hyde is a magnificent
Grade II listed Edwardian
building. It stands on
Corporation Road around
the corner from Hyde
Town Hall.
It opened in 1902 and offered
the largest stage in the area,
the finest auditorium and a fly
gallery offering the means to
employ the best scenery and
swiftest scene changes available.
It was a thriving well-loved
theatre putting on live shows to
packed audiences. Film arrived
and a moveable screen was
added. Great stars appeared
at the theatre, Enrico Caruso
and Richard Tauber to name
just two, and many other stars
visited with touring companies.
Amateur Operatic and
Musical Societies staged many
productions in the 50’s and 60’s.
In the late 60’s live theatre was
declining in favour of cinema.
Live shows ended in 1972.
Competition from multi-screen
cinema’s then saw the decline
of film shows and the theatre
closed it’s doors in 1992.
The theatre was threatened
with demolition around about
2000 to make way for a housing
development. Outraged, a group
of local people decided to save
such a beautiful theatre and
Theatre Royal Onward was
formed. Such magnificent
architecture and heritage
should be preserved and
the group was successful
in getting the building
Grade II listed before
the bulldozers moved in.
In 2001 they formed a
Building Preservation Trust
and gained charitable status
in 2002.
Royal Onward are
delighted that our
prime objective has
been achieved - that
the Theatre Royal
building has been
saved. The building is
currently in private
ownership. We are
very pleased with the
high standard of work
carried out on the
exterior of the theatre
by the owner which
means the building
is now secure from
decay. Unknown to many, the
interior and facilities remain
largely intact too.
The owner has now put the
building up for sale or let. We
dearly hope there is a buyer
that shares our vision of a
multi-use future for the theatre,
like so many other successful
venues around the country.
Community and business use
would attract people into the
town centre creating social
and economic capital. It would
breathe new life into Hyde
Town Centre. Our Options
Appraisal confirms multi-use
is feasible. We are happy to
share this and talk with anyone
interested in the immense
potential of the Theatre Royal
to be a real winner.
If you would like to know
more or get involved in any way,
visit our web site at:
www.hydetheatreroyal.co.uk
or come along to our friendly
meetings on the first Tuesday of
the month at the Cheshire Ring
public house in Hyde, opposite

would be delighted to see you!

arch is the ideal
time of year to
start planning your veg
patch, what you would
like and where to put
it. Ok so some veg is
cheaper to buy and why
go to the effort of grow
your own? Well simply
put the taste, home
grown straight from the
ground carrots, beetroot,
potatoes and even then
humble lettuce are a
different taste from fresh
and not the shop bought
bland lifeless taste.
It all starts with the seeds,
picking the right ones and
getting the right equipment to
do the job. Supermarkets sale
basic compost and even seeds,
Wilkinson’s has a good range
of seeds that are low cost and
has proven reliable, while pound
shops are good things like peat
pots and even containers. If you
really want to sow something
special a trip to the garden
centre is needed, more so for
some good advice as to what
you can grow well in the space
you have. Everyone no matter
what size of garden should be
able to grow veg.
This is also the time you can
sow tomatoes under glass or
on your window sill. One seed
into a small pot and keep warm
to germinate. Water carefully
with a mist spray until it gets
established.

Many vegetables can be started
in March depending on the
size of your garden and either
grown on under glass or
covered by cloches or a plastic
greenhouse.You could sow
lettuces in the greenhouse for
planting out later on, rocket into
a container for an early crop.
Early Potatoes can be planted
out with frost protection, given
our very strange weather this
year, make sure you have had
them in the light to allow eyes
to grow into big buds, then on
a warmer day they will be ready
to go out. Onion sets and garlic
can be planted into containers
and will do very well if covered
to keep them warm. Garlic
keeps really well if stored in a
cool place it will be good to eat
well into the following year it
was harvested.
This is a great time to start
germinating your favourite
herbs, like Basil, Dill, Parsley,
Chives and Coriander are all
good to have to hand. Herbs
can be germinated on a window
sill or under glass but you
need to know that Basil and
Coriander, are quite tender
and really like it warm so don’t
plant out until May, though if
your window sill is big enough
you could keep them indoors.
Parsley is best seeded where
you it is to grow and it can be
tricky to germinate, it needs
some warmth so early seeding
can be slow. If you want to try
something different; Mint Basil is
easy to grow and great in meat
dishes, start off under glass the
same as Basil. Chives will live in
the garden all year round and
are just starting to grow now.
An additional benefit of chives is
that they are loved by bees and
butterflies. For more ideas of
plants attractive to wildlife.
The last thing to mention is
Slugs, are the spring arrives so
do they and if you don’t want
to lose young shoots to them
then a favourite way of killing
slugs are beer traps, effective
but smelly! Any value cheap
beer will do, the slugs are not
connoisseurs of real ale, just
fill the trap. Buy one with a lid
as summer rain can dilute the
smell and lure of the beer. The
slugs are attracted by the lure
of the beer, slide into the traps
and drown.

THAT’S THE WAY TO DO IT
Ladysmith Shopping Centre had another huge success with
their Punch & Judy event on February 23rd. Once again the show
enchanted shoppers of all ages and is planned to return for a
special St Georges Day version in April.
Now why not make your
own card, not everyone likes
chocolate, fold in half a piece of
card or paper to make greetings
cards, then find some odds
and ends in your art box and
place on the front of
each, making sure it
forms the shape
of an egg, a
chick or even
a bunny.
You could
provide your
child with
cotton wool,
poster paints,
glitter and PVA
glue for even
more decorating of
the cards.
Now here’s an unusual idea,
rifling through your DVD
collection will often result in
an enjoyable family film event,
when a long forgotten movie
is discovered, prefect for a
rainy day. Now to plan your
DVD event so there’s a film or
two everyone will enjoy; get
in some ‘cinema’ provisions
(popcorn, sweets, drinks) and
makes yourselves as comfy as
possible. Draw the curtains,
turn down the lights and enjoy!
If you discover some unwanted
titles, arrange for friends to
bring their old DVDs round for
a swapping session.
If all else fails then pin the tail
on the rabbit. Just get a larger
sheet of card and draw a simple
outline of a rabbit then fix the
poster to a wall or the back of
a door. Make a tail out of a large
ball of cotton wool and attach a
piece of double-sided tape to it,
do keep some spare for when it
needs replacing. Blindfold each
family member in turn, stand
them a few paces away from the
poster, turn them around a few
times and get them to stick the
tail where they think it belongs
on the rabbit. Have some mini
chocolate eggs as prizes.

OZ: THE GREAT AND
POWERFUL
It’s time to follow the Yellow Brick Road
once more as we return to Oz for this
spectacular prequel! First released in
1939, The Wizard of Oz is a cinematic
masterpiece, beloved by millions around
the world. Now Spider-man director
Sam Raimi ventures back in time and
shows us where the eponymous wizard
came from. The story begins with
small-time circus magician Oscar Diggs
(James Franco) - a man who aspires to
greater things. One day, his air balloon
is suddenly swept inside a raging, violent
tornado and whisked away to the
weird and wonderful world of Oz. He
then meets three witches - Theodora
(Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz)
and Glinda (Michelle Williams) - who
are convinced that he is the saviour
everyone has been waiting for. Is Oscar
indeed destined to become the fabled
Wizard of Oz - one who can save the
land from great evil? Filled with Raimi’s
boundless energy and visual flair, this
lavish, big-budget fantasy takes viewers
on an incredible journey.
JACK THE GIANT SLAYER
Fee-fi-fo-fum! A talented cast leads this
action-packed twist on the story you
know and love. In a distant land, man
and giant are sworn enemies, the result
of an ancient war. However, the giants who dwell in a mystic realm in the skies
above - haven’t been seen for centuries.
When farmhand Jack (Nicholas Hoult)
is unexpectedly visited one night by
adventure-starved Princess Isabelle
(Eleanor Tomlinson), it changes his life
forever. A beanstalk suddenly shoots out
of the ground into the sky, creating a
gateway between the human world and
that of the giants. The problem is, the
beanstalk has also taken the Princess
with it! Now Jack must venture into
the giant’s realm to rescue her - only to
re-ignite the age-old conflict between
mortal enemies. Fairy tales Jack the
Giant Killer and Jack and the Beanstalk
are combined in this lavish fantasy from
X-Men director Bryan Singer, who crafts
a captivating world where battle unfolds
on a gigantic scale.
WELCOME TO THE PUNCH
It’s cop versus criminal in this stylish
British action movie starring James
McAvoy and Mark Strong. Ex-crim Jacob
Sternwood (Mark Strong) is the sworn
enemy of Detective Max Lewinsky
(James McAvoy). Lewinsky has
been pursuing his nemesis for
years but has never taken him
down. That is, until Sternwood’s
son is involved in a botched heist which forces Sternwood to return
to London from his Icelandic
hideout. Lewinsky immediately
spies an opportunity and sets
out to arrest the man he’s been
after for so long. But events take
an unexpected turn, revealing a
deeper conspiracy that puts both
of their lives in danger. Director of
cult 2009 drama Shifty, Eran Creevy
presents a visually arresting and
dramatic thriller. Shot in a striking
colour palate of blue and green
hues, it’s a riveting story that pits
two of Britain’s best screen actors
against one another.
GI JOE RETALIATION
A follow up to the 2009 movie this
sequel the GI Joes are not only
fighting their mortal enemy Cobra;
they are forced to contend with
threats from within the government
that jeopordises their very existence.
The film stars Ray Park, Jonathan
Pryce, Dwayne Johnson, Channing
Tatum and Bruce Willis who plays the
‘original’ GI Joe brought back to help
face Cobra!
PARKER
A criminal seeks revenge on his
former colleagues in this slick heist
thriller. Professional thief Parker (Jason
Statham) operates via a particular
moral code: never steal from those
who can’t afford it and never hurt
people who don’t deserve it. But then
Parker is betrayed and left for dead
by his own crew following his latest
heist. Now this career criminal is out
for revenge! Assuming a new identity,
he tracks them to Palm Beach where
he teams up with Leslie (Jennifer
Lopez), the perfect insider. With her
help, Parker gets in the inside track
on his enemies’ next job: a massive
diamond heist, which in their words is
‘the score of a lifetime’. But Parker has
a brilliant plan to get even: he will wait
for the gang to carry out the heist and
score on their very own proceeds! And
rest assured, when Parker says he’ll do
something, he always follows it through.
