celebration dinner held

Thursday 30th June.
The club is in its 79th year
and 50 guests including
Kevin’s close family and
friends and members
from the Rotary clubs of
Tameside and Glossop
attended the dinner.
Kevin, who has been a
Rotarian for14 years
commented the club would
continue to support local
and international community
projects, polio eradication,
Rotary International and he
nominated MacMillan as his
chosen charity for the year.

School Encourages Healthy Lifestles
Last month Ashton’s Waterloo
Primary School held their Healthy
Lifestyles week which highlighted
healthy eating, dental hygiene, rail
safety, safe interaction with pets
and the dangers of substance abuse
and alcohol. Junaid Ghafoor spoke
with Jo McClaren at Waterloo
School to find out more.
What prompted this idea?
“To raise the awareness with the children
and the parents about the importance of
eating healthily, being active and living a
healthy lifestyle.We incorporate elements
of healthy living throughout the school
year as again, we want to stress the
importance of healthy living.To try and
make the Healthy Lifestyles Week stand
out we try and get in visitors and run
sporting events for the children so they
can have some hands on experience with
different aspects such as road safety, pet
safety, and awareness and how to handle
peer pressure with drugs and alcohol.”
What benefits have
you seen so far?
“Well since we have changed the morning
snack to become fruit and vegetables we
have seen an improvement in general
awareness and concentration.

We also provide free fruits and vegetables
at breaktimes for the younger years as
we found that some of the children didn’t
really have breakfast before they came
in, so we try to support them where we
can. Another improvement we have seen
is that the parents have generally been a
lot more supportive with the school and
this affects the children as they are more
exited and ready to learn.”

“A number of years ago we
sponsored a dinner for the
Tatton Club, a conservative
group in Cheshire and
Theresa May was the
speaker. She regaled quite
entertainingly with tales of
her alter ego in America, who
was a ‘porn queen’. Later that
evening Theresa danced into
the small hours, so perhaps a
lot more fun than we give her
credit for.”

National Education Award
An “outstanding” collaboration of Tameside teachers
has won the ‘English Team of the Year’ title in the TES
(Time Educational Supplement) Schools Awards.
The group of literacy leaders, school librarians, heads of
English, key stage 4 and 3 leaders from all the borough’s
secondary schools and academies and local authority school
performance and standards staff were recognised for their
joint work to share experience and practice for the benefit
of all local secondary school children.
Their work contributed to Tameside’s GCSE results last
year far exceeding
the national average
for progress and
attainment in English.

beyond Tameside by
leading conference
workshops on how to
improve outcomes.

Sparkling Events
The last few weeks have been party party at
Harrington and Hallworth with a variety of special
customer events. Swarovski Saturday had clients
enjoying a glass of fizz and good ‘try on’.
They had an amazing watch party at Porsche
Handforth, test driving the cars and trying on elitist
watches. They supported a charity dinner, and hosted
a party for a clients 100th birthday! Then down to
earth they mopped the front, hoovered the carpet
and polished the counters. It’s all go at H&H!!

Christmas Plans Begin
This year Tameside
Markets are taking control
of the Tameside Christmas
Market after three years
under the management
of New Image PR in
Oldham. Nicola Martin,
award winning manager
of Tameside Markets, has
embraced the opportunity
to make this year a
real Christmas treat
for visitors with more
emphasis on the retail
aspects.
Student Junaid Ghafoor
spoke with Nicola to find
out more about this year’s
exciting plans.
He started by asking what
new things are going to
be featured in this years
Christmas markets?
To add to our very traditional
theme we aim to feature local
talents and hopefully lots of
the Tameside Brass Bands.
There will be a big focus on
children’s entertainment with
plenty of fun festive activities
planned during the
3 weekends.
Most of the entertainment
will be held on our new low
level stage area and will be
covered to provide weather
protection and seating.
This will also be the area
where we hope the local
college will be providing us
with some Christmas lunches.
As before our markets will be
held on Market Street and
Fletcher Street.”

Scarefest – even
better with a town
centre parade based
on Day Of The Dead.
The colourful “Día de
Muertos” celebration
hails from Mexico and is
famously seen at the start
of the last James Bond film
‘Spectre’. Junaid Ghafoor
spoke to Val Unwin,
Vice Chair of Ashton Town
Team, and asked where
did the inspiration for
Scarefest come from?
“It really started because
we needed to think of an
event that would cover the
Halloween period. So we had
a meeting and we trialled
it one year and it seemed
to work.The actual idea
for Scarefest came from
Kevin Taylor from the About
Tameside magazine and we
really liked the sound of it,
and now it’s grown into an
annual event for everyone.
It was decided that Scarefest
had to be an annual event,
and especially last year
it’s grown and become a
popular attraction among
both younger and older
generations.”
What kind of things
can we expect at
Scarefest this year?
“Well this year we hope
to have the Yame Valley
Vintage & Classic Car group
attending again, No-Eyed
Theatre with their fantastic
characters,Tameside
Scouts, dance groups and
Clarendon College providing
entertainment including
sword fighting skeletons.The
main theme for this year is
Day of the Dead which is
a Mexican tradition and we
hope to recreate the walking
parade this year.We are
delighted our Face Painter
has been sponsored by the
Ashton Rotary Club as well
as more local businesses
taking part in window
dressing to add to the
atmosphere.”

Teachers Charity Trek

led a team of colleagues to complete the
Yorkshire three peaks challenge. The challenge
involved hiking to the top of Pen-y-ghent,
Whernside and Ingleborough in fewer than 12
hours to raise money for Manchester based
children’s hospice, Grace’s Place.

“Some of us struggled up the first peak as we adjusted
to the pace and changing weather conditions but it was
a great feeling to be undertaking the challenge and there
was a real team spirit on the day.”

he popularity of Siberian Huskies in Tameside has grown
considerably over the past few years with many people
adopting rescue dogs as well as buying puppies!
One group which has been set up
to help owners is Tameside Huskies
established by Julie Hibbert and
Michala Morton which has over 400
members on Facebook. We asked them
how the group began.
Julie “We started back in October 2014”.
Michala “We were previously involved
in a separate Husky group in the area
but we had our own visions of grandeur.
So it was Julie’s vision and together we
developed it into Tameside Huskies. We
wanted to go on proper walks, including
hill walking, fell walking, camping and
create some branded merchandise for
members. In the last year we have also

Michala “I think the breed has become
popular all over the UK, not just in
Tameside. People have seen the dogs
in Game Of Thrones, although in that
series they called them Dire Wolves, but
it is also one of the breeds that comes
up constantly for adoption. I have three
rescue dogs myself .”

Julie “ We bought Jacob and then Sophie
but then we got Kobe from Eight Below
Husky Rescue aged 20 weeks, and lastly
Willow in February this year.”
Typically the huskies look
great as puppies but what
are the difficulties in looking
after this breed?
Michala “Very difficult, out of my four,
my second dog Winter has destroyed my
house. No matter how much exercise she
had or stimulation with toys I would get
home from work and find a big hole in
my settee. She’s actually eaten into three
settees, carpets, shoes, glasses and small
items you may leave around the house.
Winter also demolished the garden, eaten
wooden decking and destroyed grass
which meant having to put astroturf down.
If she had been my very first husky I
would never have got any others.”
Julie “I haven’t had those kinds of
problems. A key thing is mine have grown
up in their crates and they love to be
inside those rather than have them
wondering through the house when we
are not around.”
Michala “I do give my dogs the freedom
to roam although I did try to crate them.
However, Nanook my first dog she has a
fantastic voice and when she’s in the crate
she just howled. So for me it was easier
not to crate them.”
So how can people
join the group?
Michala “The best thing is for them
to go on Facebook and find Tameside
Huskies. Once they’ve joined they’ll find
people with a wealth of knowledge and
experience who are happy to share their
expertise.We also have a secured area
where dogs can go safely off lead, help
with puppy training, organise walks and
other social events as well.”

talybridge Archery club
was founded in 1958,
and over the intervening
years has produced many fine
archers. Amongst its past and
present members it has county
champions, national record
holders and even Olympic
competitors.
We spoke with the Level 2 club coach
Milan Koria and Junior Club Secretary
Margaret Shorrock. To begin we asked
how they both got involved in the
Archery Club.
Milan “I started at the age of 10 when
I spotted people shooting so I asked if I
could have a go and then I was hooked
and I’m now 54!”
Margaret “I got involved 25 years ago
directly with the club but I actually started
shooting in 1958 with my husband.When
I was 58 I heard there was an open day
at the club so I came along and I’ve held
various posts on the committee and I’m
Junior Club Secretary at the moment.
We now have a maximum of 30 junior
members in the club.”
Archery is perhaps an unusual
sport to find in Tameside?
Milan “ Well we’ve been going for almost
60 years so it’s proved that it is a sport
which is still popular with those aged 11
all the way through to people in their 80’s.
Our starting age for juniors is 11 because
of the physical development of the child
and so they can use the bows properly.”
Margaret “We have over 120 members
of the club which includes the juniors who
only shoot on a Saturday morning from
10.30am until 1.30pm. If their parent
is an experienced archer they can
shoot with their parent at any time.
Adult members can shoot when they like
7 days a week.”

Is the club aimed at those
shooting for pleasure or to
become professional archers?
Milan “It’s both really, we are very keen
to ensure the club is family orientated
so if you just want to come and use the
facilities for pleasure that’s great but there
is the option to develop professionally.
Now I really enjoy the coaching side
now my shooting has come to an end
so I feel I’m giving back to the club with
the coaching work. I’ve used a variety of
bows in my time including Recurve and
Compound to a proficient standard so I’m
glad I can pass on my experience.”
Margaret “We do run courses every year
with our coaches and instructors which
is usually a maximum of 6 learners. Over
half those who do the courses join the
club. A year’s adult membership is £124
which includes club fees and regional
membership to the National Archery
Association. Equipment for a junior can
be anything between £170 to £200 which
we can help with because it is made to
measure for the height, your strength and
the arrow depends on arm length.
So we would recommend going to a
Bowyer but you would use club equipment
whilst training.”
Is there a particular
type of bow people use?
Milan “We start them off on the Recurve
bow because there are a wide range of
those that cater for different pockets. It’s
a good introduction to archery and from
that you might want to try longbow or
maybe a compound bow it’s really up to
them.”
As one of the senior
members Margaret what do
you enjoy about your
involvement with the club?
Margaret “I enjoy everything about it.
I don’t shoot that much now but I did
when I joined up to 2009 but a couple
of minor strokes got in the way. But now
I concentrate on the juniors and I also
organise all the beginner courses.”
What’s the most
difficult thing to learn?
Milan “Patience. I’ve been shooting for 40
years and I’m still learning.”

The clubs principle discipline is target
archery, but members are encouraged
to try their hand at the other
disciplines of the sport, these include
primarily Field and Clout.
Many club members actively take part
in tournaments spanning the length of
the country, from Dunster in Somerset
to the Isle of Skye, these tournaments
range from world record status events
to the more relaxed inter club shoots.
The club has members who are
actively involved in the sport both as
archers and officials from county to
International level, these include two
qualified club coaches who oversee the
beginner’s courses run by the club and
who are available to help, advice and
assistance to all club members with
any aspect of shooting.
The club also has a member who is
qualified as a National Judge with the
Grand National Archery Society and
as a Continental Judge with World
Archery Europe and an International
Judge Candidate with World Archery.
He also holds the post of Judge
Liaison officer for both the Cheshire
Archery Association and the Northern
Counties Archery Society and is
also a member of the National judge
committee. He has been on the judging
teams at the Archery World Cup, when
it was held in Dover in 2007, four
European championships, the London
Olympic archery test event and the
London 2012 Olympic archery event.
The club also caters for those archers
who feel they are not yet ready for
open tournaments, and/or, who just
don’t like to shoot away from the club,
by staging its own club competitions,
which are held throughout the year,
and are geared to improving the
shooting skills of all archers but
most especially those of the less
experienced.
There is also a social side to the
club with a number of events being
organised each year. These range from
the simple evening get together to

Tribute to Armed Forces
TAMESIDE certainly flew
the flag to honour service
personnel past and present
during its Armed Forces
Day celebrations in June.
From poignant poetry to
rousing music, the event
– held at Victoria Park in
Denton – was a fitting
tribute to those who have
risked or given their lives for
their country. Despite the
mixed weather, crowds came
along to join in proceedings,
which included a short
service of remembrance at
the war memorial led by
Father Alec Mitchell from St
Anne’s Church, Denton and
accompanied by Denton Brass
Band.
One of the most moving
points of the day was when
local poets George Watkins
(a 99-year-old veteran), Paul
Broadhurst and Albert Taylor
read out their powerful and
thought-provoking poems
about service and the first
and second world wars.
Afterwards, there was live
music from Dave Egerton
Band and singer Jo Lancaster
while Tameside Harmonies,
Tameside Music Service’s
youth choir, and Do Your
Thing choirs also put in
fantastic performances. There
was also a huge range of
free family-friendly activities,
including a climbing wall,
archery, face-painting and
balloon modelling, as well as a
wide range of arts and crafts.
The day, organised by
Tameside Council Cultural
Service and part funded by
a Ministry of Defence grant,
was especially successful
thanks to the support of
SSAFA armed forces charity,
Royal British Legion, Armoury
Trust, Royal Signal Benevolent
Fund, The Duke of Lancs

MP Opens Dog Show
Friends of King George

(FoKGVPF) had their sixth
annual fun dog show to
raise funds for Manchester
Dogs Home (MDH) for
their great work they do
for rescued dogs.
Angela Rayner MP managed
to fit into her tight schedule,
of her new roles in
Parliament, to open the sixth
dog show. After the opening
the MP was given a tour
of the work the FoKGVPF
volunteers do by Alan Fish.

at the orchard, the plastic
bottle green house but didn’t
have time to have a jog on
the Keep Fit Path or go on
the exercise gym equipment
along it’s route. The show
run by Joanne Barrow from
Manchester Dogs Home
was a great success, but was
down on dog entries this
year, which was probably
due to Saturday’s storms and
down pours, it didn’t look
good on Sunday morning, but
did manage sunshine on the
dog show.
There were winners in
each class, most handsome
male, prettiest bitch, cutest
puppy, best rescue, sweetest
oap, best cross breed, but
the shows overall winner
was Frank, a golden bassett
whose owner Steff was
delighted that Frank won
best in show. The runner
up was Poppy, a border
terrier and the owners
Katie and Ellie were over
the moon coming second in
the show. If you would like

along to support the event
displaying a variety of
costumes used for theatre
and carnival events across
the northwest. Within these
costumes included Day of
the Dead Skeletons, which
Chris explained would
be used for the Ashton
Scarefest Halloween
event on 29th October.
Other notable guests of
the event included the
Avengers Assemble, hired
to put on entertainment
for the children. They really
seemed to lighten the mood,
despite the dreary weather
conditions. There were also
a variety of performances
on the main stage of the
festival, including dancers
from Tameside College,
Ross Denton singing, guitar
and singing from Steve
Gibson and 80 children
doing a dance performance.
There was also a stilt walker
who thought the event had
brought the community
together. Raymond Jones,
Chef Lecturer at Tameside
College, also attended
providing delicious crepes
for free. Tameside College
provides and delivers
vocational subjects, including
hospitality, catering and
events management.
In terms of local businesses,
Roger De Gennaro, the
owner of World of Scooters
and Ruggiero’s Coffee
Shop also put hard work
and effort into performing
as ‘Ross Denton’ on stage.
He said “It’s important for
events like this to happen so
that awareness can be raised
for the local businesses
in the area.” World of
Scooters offers a number
of solutions for Mobility,
including motorised
vehicles, electric scooters
and wheelchairs. The coffee
shop also served people
who attended the event,
providing coffees, paninis,
toasties and more. Steve
and Tina Gibson from the
Gibson Music had a stall
raising money for their son’s
Duke of Edinburgh Gold
Award.
Tina said “This has created
a lot of activity, and as
businesses, they need more
business on the street.” Tony
James, from Tameside Beds
and Mattresses was also
one of the key supporters
for the event and added
“This event is important
because a lot of people
don’t know Stamford Street
exists. I make furniture, beds,
mattresses, novelty furniture
and children’s items which
many are bespoke but people
have tyo know we are here”.
All in all, the event was a
success despite the weather
conditions. Everyone
seemed to enjoy themselves,
and it is extremely
important for family-fun
events like this to happen
within the community,
specifically when local
businesses are involved.

is a group of volunteers
that has run classes for
the community for over
30 years and also run a
community café three days
a week.
Willow Wood Hospice
supports not only patients
but the family members
and carers who are also
affected by cancer and life
threatening conditions.
It cares for up to 12 in
patients and 15 day patients
at any given time. Alongside
this it provides numerous
out patient services such as
physiotherapy, hydrotherapy,
bereavement counselling and
most recently a dementia
care service.

Hospice is absolutely

volunteers have been
recognised in this way. For
our volunteers to receive
the Queen’s Award for

There was the opportunity for people to vote online

such as Ashton Market Hall, George Lawton Hall and
Stalybridge Civic Hall. This year we were delighted to have
many businesses recognised including The Village Café in
Droylsden which had many compliments added to their

In an epic semi-final of the competition the Sheffield Tigers

the home team favourites Somerset Rebels.
At a packed Oak Tree Arena, Kyle and Simon notched 21 in

Albion Gears Up
for Heritage Day
This year will be a spectacular event as Albion
celebrates its 200th Anniversary and will join
Heritage day Celebrations on September 10th.
Along with an exhibition showing our history, we will
have baptism, marriage records and cradle roles on
display which we hope will bring along people from
around Tameside whose ancestors names might well
appear. In the early 19th century Albion was the first
Congregational chapel in the area now known as
Tameside and over the period 1830 to 1890 Albion
members set up Congregational chapels in Stalybridge,
Audenshaw, Denton, Dukinfield, and Mossley; it is
therefore likely that your ancestors may be recorded in
Albion baptisms or marriages.
This year, we will have some of our members dressed in
Victorian costume representing past members of Albion
who will be able to discuss with visitors the history of
the person represented and their contribution to the
church and the town of Ashton.
Also on display will be a ‘box of tricks’ which, when each
door is opened, fascinating artefacts relating to our
church and Sunday schools will be revealed which should
be of interest to young and old alike.
Admission is free and refreshments will be on sale.

Officers Remembered
A memorial stone has been laid in Tameside to honour
two PCs who were killed whilst on active duty.
The Police Memorial Trust’s 39th national memorial was
unveiled by MP David Cameron at a ceremony on 14 July
2016 at the Hub in Mottram, honouring PC Fiona Bone
& PC Nicola Hughes, who were brutally murdered whilst
protecting the citizens of Mottram.
The unveiling of the memorial was also attended by Mrs
Michael Winner, chairman of the Police Memorial Trust,
Chief Constable Ian Hopkins, the families of both officers
and their police colleagues together with the local MP and
other dignitaries. The private event started at 3.30pm when
the Greater Manchester Police Band played, followed by
speeches and the unveiling of the memorial.

Stalybridge Civic Hall.
The event featured motorcycles through the ages,
17 different classes, 23 trophies, and refreshments and the

Corner
Potatoe Pie with
Cheese and Sausage
Ingredients:
• 750g Maris Piper
potatoes, peeled and
quartered
• 1 tsp olive oil
• 1 large onion, thinly sliced
• 400g sausages, each cut
into 4
• 100ml skimmed milk
• 50g strong half fat cheese
such as mature Cheddar
grated
• 1 tsp wholegrain or
English mustard
• 2–3 tomatoes, sliced
Method:
Prepare your ingredients
and set the oven to 200ºC/
fan 180ºC/gas 6.
While waiting for the oven
to preheat cook your
potatoes in boiling water
for 15 to 20 minutes until
tender. While the potatoes

are cooking, pop the
sausages under the grill until
golden.
Heat the olive oil in a large
frying pan and gently sauté
the onion for about 8
minutes stirring occasionally,
until the onions are
caramelised.
Drain the potatoes and
return back to their pan
mashing well with the milk,
the mustard and some
seasoning.
Put the sausages and onions
in the base of a pie dish
spooning over the mash
before scattering over the
cheese and laying on the
tomato slices on top. Bake
for 20 to 25 minutes until
the top is bubbling and is
lightly golden.
As a variation why not swap
the sausages for smoked
salmon or mackerel.
