TOASTING CHANGE
Visitors to Arrand &
Dyson on Stamford
Street may feel that
there’s a new owner in
place for the established
furniture retailer.
The refurbishment was
undertaken by owner Steve
Arrand working with Tris
Sedgwick, of TRISTESSA
LTD, in creating a fresh new
look for the store which first
opened it’s doors back in 1974.

Happy Birthday to us! About Tameside is a year old and it’s all thanks to our
advertisers and readers that we have reached this first milestone. We hope over
the last year you have enjoyed some of the features and articles in the magazine
and we hope to build on those to get better and better each month.
We have also reprinted the first recipe we featured from Eileen Gravener, who
sadly passed away in May this year, who made such a great contribution with her
Cookery Corner.
There is still time to enter our photographic competition to have your photo as
the cover for our January 2014 issue – hurry and get your entries in now!
In this November issue you’ll find our feature on the arrival of Metrolink in
Ashton Town Centre, details about Gallery 23’s Charity Evening in Stalybridge,
information on Remembrance Services in Tameside this November and our
WHAT’S ON listing too with exciting activities taking place. I think we know
Customer Service is important and Jan Lord highlights this with her ON THE
DRIVERS SIDE feature this month.

Christmas Market along with events taking place around Tameside for the festive
season.

PARTING THOUGHTS
The last motorbike shop
in Ashton closed it’s
doors in September after
trading 40 years in the
town.
Wilma and Pete Bowers,
owners of Ashton Kawasaki
Centre, retired this year and
now intend to do some serious
biking themselves. Motorbikes
have been their passion and
having the Kawasaki franchise
for 36 years has
been great. It has
enabled them to
travel the world
with the leading
brand and even
visited the factory
in Japan a few
years ago, which
was an amazing
experience. Over
the years some
customers have
become firm
friends and they
intend to keep
in touch. Their
business has been
more of a hobby
GET ON YER BIKE!
and during their time at the
shop some famous faces have
bought bikes from the soaps
and our own local ‘Rocket man’
Steve Bennett. One customer
has purchased 15 bikes during
their time at the shop starting in
1978 when he was just 17 years
old and now has the ultimate
Kawasaki GTR 1400, now that’s
customer loyalty !
The Storage Place
at Hyde organised a
family bicycle ride to
raise money for the
TIK TOK charity in
August.
With sponsorship and
donations so far the total has
now reached £723 ! TIK-TOC is
a charity set up to support and
help the education of children.
Since October 2011, work has
already started. Relationships
have formed between the
teachers in Kenya and those
at TIK-TOC. Whilst forming
partnerships with schools in the
UK, TIK-TOC sends teaching
resources over to the school
on a regular basis throughout
the school year to support and
enhance their learning.You can

Happy Anniversary

es it’s been a year
already since the first
issue of About Tameside
appeared on the streets
and the shops. Back
in November 2012 we
didn’t know what to
expect from the launch
of a new magazine but
over the months, thanks
to our advertisers
and contributors, the
magazine has improved
it’s style and design to
become one of the most
popular free publications
in Tameside.
We are also proud at the
amount of support we have
been able to give community
groups and charities during
this first twelve months and
something we will certainly
continue to do. Our Mascot,
Teddy Tameside, has also been
another success being identified
around the various Town
Centres and invited to events

Farmers Market Up for Award
Shoppers are being asked to show their
support for Ashton Farmers’ Market as it
competes for a new award.
The popular market, which is held on the last
Sunday of every month, has been nominated
for the ‘Market of The Year’category in the
Farm Shop & Deli Awards.
The Farm Shop & Deli Awards, in partnership
with Olives Et Al, have been launched to
recognise the very best standards in speciality
retail and to celebrate the highest levels
of service, product knowledge, initiative
innovation and community involvement. Part
of the judging criteria is public votes, so
Ashton-under-Lyne Farmers’ Market needs
the support of local shoppers, traders and
visitors to help it to win.
Cycle Hub Opens in Tameside
A new cycle hub, developed to support and
encourage people to use their bikes, has
opened in Tameside.
The Ashton-under-Lyne cycle hub, developed
by Transport for Greater Manchester
(TfGM) in partnership with Tameside Council,
is located outside Ashton Swimming Baths on
Water Street. It has 40 cycle parking spaces
using Sheffield stands and lockers for storing
cycle helmets and other cycling accessories.
The hub operates on a membership basis,
with secure smartcard access to open an
automatic door. CCTV coverage will provide
additional security. Membership costs £10
per year and is available to anyone by visiting
the website or by calling 0300 123 1675.
Members will receive access to the Bury cycle
hub as well as other regional hubs that are
planned to open in Rochdale, Trafford, Wigan,
Oldham and Stockport.
Fraud Investigation at Funeral
Directors
A Tameside Funeral Director is being
investigated for fraud and other offences.
Officers from Tameside Council visited
Murray’s Funeral Directors on Cheetham Hill
Road in Dukinfield along with officers from
Greater Manchester Police on Wednesday
October 2nd.
The visit was in response to a number of
complaints from members of the public and
they executed a warrant in respect of alleged
consumer-protection, fraud and financial
offences.
MP Happy to Retain Shadow Health
Minister Position
Commenting on the announcement, Andrew
said: “I am absolutely delighted to have been
asked by Ed Miliband to remain in Labour’s
Shadow Health team. It’s been great to work
alongside Andy Burnham for the past two
years and in that time we have developed
a crucial policy on integrating health and
social care into a new ‘National health and
care service’ fit for the 21st century, and
we have also been clear: we will repeal the
Tories’ Health and Social Care Act, which is
dismantling our NHS by stealth.”
He added: “In the run up to the 2015 General
Election, health is going to be a major
battleground between two conflicting visions:
a Tory ‘private’ free-for-all or a renewed NHS
based on whole-person care under Labour.
I’m now looking forward to that campaign!
Tameside Man Jailed for Smuggling
Tobacco & Alcohol
A man from Stalybridge who smuggled illegal
tobacco and alcohol has been sent to jail after
being found in possession of 230,000 illegal
cigarettes, 374 litres of wine and 20 kg of
hand rolling tobacco.
42 year old Sanjay Mistry of Montague
Way has been jailed for 7 months and will
face further action under legislation regarding
the Proceeds of Crime.
In a previous hearing, Mistry had been found
guilty of 14 offences under the Customs and
Excise management Act. Searches had been
carried out by Customs and Excise Officials
in 2011, but whilst under investigation, Mistry
was caught smuggling non-duty paid tobacco,
vodka and wine by police.
It is estimated that Mistry had avoided paying
around £83,000 in customs duty by smuggling
tobacco, vodka and wine.
Findel Education Wins Prestigious
Award
Hyde-based Findel Education Resources is
delighted to have come out as the winners
in the ‘Best Improvement Strategy’ category
of the prestigious European Call Centre
and Customer Service Awards, held on
London’s Park Lane on Wednesday October
2nd and hosted by comedian Jimmy Carr. The
category’s other finalists included well-known
names Barclays and Virgin Media.
Findel Education Resources’ ‘easy to do
business with’ mission was recognised by
the judges who praised their hard work in
improving customer service over the last two
years, commenting that they were “impressed
with their open and honest approach to
issues and when difficult decisions needed to
be made, they were swift and tough.”
Major Investment Project – ‘Vision
Tameside’
An ambitious new project for Tameside
has been unveiled by Tameside College in
partnership with Tameside Council which will
provide a massive boost the Ashton Town
Centre economy, create new jobs and provide
massively improved learning and skills facilities
to invest in the future of young people right
across the borough and Greater Manchester.
This once in a lifetime opportunity for
Tameside brings together the latest transport
infrastructure, the fastest broadband
connection in Greater Manchester and
outstanding teaching and learning facilities in
state of the art accommodation that doesn’t
just transform the lives of young people
but raises the aspirations and opportunities
available to the whole Tameside community.
College Students Contribute to
Christmas Market
Students from Tameside College are helping
to build the wooden cabins that will be used
for the Ashton Christmas Market.
Over 50 students who are studying a variety
of subjects from engineering and welding
to carpentry and plumbing, have been using
products sourced from Tameside suppliers
to construct the 30 traditional-style wooden
cabins that will form the festive village in
Market Street, alongside Ashton Market Hall.
The project is providing the trainees, who are
working alongside skilled professionals, with
work experience in a real life commercial
setting. They will have the opportunity to see
the fruits of their labours being out to use
when the much anticipated Christmas Market
opens in December.
Hospital E-Rostering Team Wins
National Award
Tameside NHS Foundation Trust has won
an award recognising a team which has
encouraged, increased and improved staff
contribution through effective engagement.
The Allocate Awards 2013 recognise
excellence and innovation across the
user community of more than 250 NHS
organisations. The awards celebrate the
use of technology by the NHS and reward
those who have made a difference, whether
that is to patients, colleagues, their entire
organisation or the wider NHS.
The eight awards were judged and presented
by an independent panel of leading healthcare
and industry professionals including Dr John
Bullivant, chairman of the Good Governance
Institute, Dr David Foster, Deputy Director
of Nursing for the Department of Health
Professor Paul Stanton, CEO of Southminster
Consultancy Associates, Jenni Middleton,

About Tameside 11
Historic Market
A
royal charter to hold
a market in Ashton
was granted in 1284 which
means there has been a
market in Ashton now
for over 700 years. The
original markets took place
in the square around the
old market cross (now St
Michael’s Square at the
bottom of Old Cross Street).
It was during the nineteenth
century that the market expanded
and the present Market Hall
started construction in 1829 and
was extended several times to its
present size.
Located at the ‘heart of the town’,
the envy of many other North West
towns – Ashton’s brilliant indoor
and outdoor markets. This is where
great choice, high quality and value
12 About Tameside
for money still attracts thousands
of shoppers everyday from all over
the region.
This historic market holds a
special place in the hearts of the
public and traders alike. Not only
is the market a well loved venue
amongst shoppers and visitors but
the market’s listed building it is an
iconic landmark in the town centre.
The outdoor market is open seven
days a week, a feat that other
markets simply cannot match, with
a flea market on Tuesdays and a
table top sale every Sunday except
for the last Sunday in the month
– when Ashton hosts the North
West’s biggest and best ‘Farmers
and Producers’ market with all
items fresh and grown locally.

About Tameside 17
Metrolink is Go
Shudehill and Manchester
Victoria stops – before serving
all stops on the Bury line.
T
he first Metrolink
tram in passenger
service from Ashtonunder-Lyne departed on
Wednesday 9th October
– several months ahead
of schedule. The launch
to Ashton will add
four new stops to the
East Manchester line:
Audenshaw, Ashton
Moss, Ashton West and
Ashton-under-Lyne.
Park and ride facilities at
Ashton Moss (200 spaces)
and Ashton West (194 spaces,
shared with users of the
Ashton Moss Leisure Park) will
also open and will be free to
use for Metrolink passengers.
Tram journeys from Ashton to
Piccadilly will take a little over
30 minutes.
Tameside Council’s Executive
Member for Transport and
Land Use, Councillor Peter
Robinson said: “These are
18 About Tameside
exciting times for our borough
with the Metrolink line to Ashton
providing another piece in the
public transport jigsaw for
Tameside.
“You can’t fail to be impressed
by the new public transport hub
we have here now, with the bus
station, train station and new
Metrolink stop situated right next
to each other.
“We have already seen the
positive impact the tram service
to Droylsden has had on that
town and this will be equally
positive for Ashton.
“On a personal note, as an avid
football fan the fact the new
line makes it easier to reach
both Old Trafford and the City of
Manchester Stadium is a bonus.”
Services starting at Ashton will
run on through Manchester
city centre – calling at
Manchester Piccadilly, Piccadilly
Gardens, Market Street,
Passengers will be able to
connect with services to
Altrincham and Eccles at
Manchester Piccadilly or
Piccadilly Gardens, and services
to East Didsbury, Oldham and
Rochdale at Market Street.
Executive Council Leader Cllr
Kieran Quinn said:
“The fact trams are now running
into Ashton for the first time in
nearly 80 years and ahead of
schedule is absolutely brilliant
news for Tameside.
“Connectivity is one of the main
thrusts of our drive to reinvigorate
the local economy because it
gives our residents and businesses
the ability to travel more quickly
to and from work. Now the
extension to Ashton is open it will
benefit those from right across
the borough and if the Droylsden
usage figures are anything to go
by the numbers benefitting from
trams into Tameside are bound to
be equally impressive.
“In the first week the line to
Droylsden was open to the
general public, nearly 8,000
people used the tram to and
from the town. By the end of the
following week the overall figure
had climbed to over 9,000.
“I have no doubt that Metrolink’s
arrival into Ashton will prove a
major boost for the town and the
rest of the borough, making it
easier for people to reach work
and get to the popular Ashton
Market. The market already enjoys
the third highest footfall of any
market in the northwest, which
will improve even further now
trams pull into the town centre
right next to the bus station.
“The fact the Ashton West stop
is across the road from the
Ashton Moss leisure park which
includes a cinema and bowling
alley as well as a wide variety
of food outlets means visitors
and commuters will have easy
access to a key employment and
leisure site.”
SINGING SUCCESS
Two years ago, the
doors at Charlestown
Church Hall were
opened for the launch
of Do Your Thing
Community Choir.
The Choir’s Musical
Director, Liz Taylor
would not have believed
then how her dream of
running a community
choir in Tameside
would have grown into
the sensation that has
now taken the north
west by storm.
Liz, a professional singer
and vocal coach, had herself
experienced great success
being part of the multi award
winning UCLAN Chamber
Choir and was keen to
share the fantastic sense
of achievement singing in a
choir gives with many more
people.
One of this year’s highlights
was when both choirs
teamed up to perform live on
SSAFA Choir Hits The Right Notes
BBC Radio Manchester. This
was a particularly historic
day for Do Your Thing as
this performance was in fact
Stockport’s debut!
“What an incredible two
years this has been for our
choir” Liz said. “As I look
into the sea of faces, singing
out loud and proud, I hardly
recognise those shy nervous
people who entered that
first rehearsal two years
ago. To have achieved what
we have already makes me
very excited about what the
future has in store for Do
Your Thing. The sky’s the
limit!”

to Get Toasty
Greater Manchester
residents are being
encouraged to save energy
- as well as reduce their
fuel bills - by applying for
free or discounted work on
their homes.
This new offer can provide
a variety of free insulation
measures, not just loft and cavity
wall, and some eligible residents
may also be entitled to a new
boiler.
Residents are encouraged to
call the advice line to see if their
property is eligible as it could see
them saving hundreds of pounds a
year from their energy bills. Even
if a property hasn’t been suitable
in the past, there may now be
solutions available.
The offer is being made as part
of the Get Me Toasty campaign,
in which people living in certain
areas of Greater Manchester
will automatically qualify for free
insulation measures.
Some low income households
with poor insulation and heating
systems will be able to access
free heating and insulation
improvements.
Cllr Barrie Holland, Chair of
Tameside’s Carbon Reduction
Panel, said: “We’re asking our
residents to see if they’re eligible
for this free service by visiting
the website. As energy prices
are set to rise yet again, the
increasing costs of keeping a
warm is a serious concern for
many residents, and this could be
a welcome boost for them. “

November Quiz
CUSTOMER SERVICE
IS KEY TO SUCCESS
will never work on that vehicle if
no authority is given, he may give
options to the customer where
possible, and he will always
explain in detail what is required
without any jargon. The vehicle in
many cases receives a wash and a
vac before it leaves us.
Recently Guide Bridge
MOT was very honoured
to be awarded the ‘Going
the Extra Mile 2013’ award
by ARI Fleet Management.
This got me into thinking ‘What
is customer service, what does
going the extra mile’ mean to
you our customers? What do you
expect when you walk through
our doors!
The definition of ‘Customer
Service’ on the internet gave me
a few options:
“Customer service is about treating
others as you would like to be
treated yourself ”
“Customer service is an
organisation’s ability to supply their
customers’ wants and needs”
“Customer Service is a phrase that
is used to describe the process of
taking care of our customers in a
positive manner”
From here on I thought I would
share my thoughts on it:
Customer Service to us means:
When a customer comes into
our garage they are met with
smiley faces from the girls behind
the reception desk, they are
asked what is to be done with
their car, what time would they
like it back and is there anything
else we can do to help.
The customer leaves their vehicle
and we take over, the mechanic
is issued the job and he keeps in
contact with the customer and
24 About Tameside
The job is then passed back
to the receptionist to raise an
invoice and a telephone call made
to inform the customer that the
vehicle is ready for collection.
The customer will come and
collect the vehicle and is met
with varying ways to pay (Sorry
we do not accept furry animals
and children!) and they leave the
garage happy in the fact that they
know their car is safe and it’s
been done in the best possible
way meeting the customer’s
needs and expectations.
A couple of weeks after the
job has been completed the
customer receives a phone call
from Derek (Business owner) to
check that everything is OK and
he will answer any questions that
the customer may have.
But then I thought is ‘Customer
Service - Going the Extra Mile
because we will pick and collect
from the customers home or
place of work, perhaps take the
customer home if it’s raining, or
is it that we will lend them a
free courtesy car if their vehicle
is going to off the road and they
need transport? Or is it that they
can sit in a clean warm reception
area with a cup of coffee and
watch the TV if they are sitting
and waiting for their car. Or is it
because we take the worry out
of when your MOT is due by
sending you reminders…. I have
a list as long as my arm of how I
think we portray good customer
service and would love to show
you how we do it.
All in all Customer Service plays
a very big part in our working
day and I hope you will support
our family business and help us
keep this award in our name for
many years to come
More importantly if you think I’ve
missed something, please let me
know I welcome any feedback

When the first issue
of About Tameside
debuted in November
2012 we were delighted
that Eileen Gravener,
from Lakeswood in
Dukinfield, was sharing
some of her recipes
with us. Over the
months we had Tipsy
Mince Pies, Fish Pie,
Chocolate Brownies
and Chicken Stir Fry
to create! Sadly Eileen
passed away in May but
we wanted to celebrate
her contribution to the
magazine during this
first year by reprinting
her very first recipe…..
Tasty
Cheese and
Onion Pie
Ingedients
6oz (170g) Self Raising Flour
3oz (85g) Margerine or
Butter
¾ pint (15 fluid oz) of milk
1 large red onion or normal
onion
8oz (227g) Grated Mature
Cheddar Cheese
1 egg
Salt and Pepper to taste
Place the flour and butter
into a basin (Leaving a few
table spoons of flour aside
to make the sauce). Mix
together until the contents
resemble breadcrumbs and
add a small amount of the
milk to bind the mixture
together to make the
pastry.You can now leave
28 About Tameside
ovember is a great
time of year, lots
of amazing changes in
colour as the trees begin
their winter sleep, though
the downside is all the
sweeping up too, though
if you remove fallen
leaves from lawns and
borders and put them in
a separate compost bin or
even a black bin liner they
make good leaf mould. Yes
there are still things to
do before the really bad
weather takes hold.
this to one side as we start
to make the filling for the
pie.
Add a knob of butter into
the pan along with the flour
you have saved and mix
together gradually adding
milk to make your sauce
as your pan heats up. Chop
your onion and then cook
them in a lightly greased
frying pan until tender and
then add into your sauce
mix.You can now mix in
your grated cheese with
seasoning to taste and
remove your pan from the
heat.
Now take half your pastry
and roll out to cover the
bottom and sides of a
medium sized pie dish –
or similar. Once in place
you can then add your pie
filling before rolling out the
remainder of the pastry to
form the top.You can use
a fork to crimp around the
edges to seal the pastry
and then with a mixture of
egg and milk gently brush
the top to get a nice golden
baked crust.
Bake for 30 minutes at
Gas Mark 4 (180 degrees)
and there you have a Tasty
Cheese & Onion Pie!
Again you could plant tulip bulbs,
just select bulbs with different
flowering times to prolong the
flowering season, flowers in
March and early April plant bulbs
of the Kaufmanniana, Fosteriana
and Greigii groups, but for
flowers in April to early May
try Swan hybrids and parrot
tulips and for late May there are
Rembrandt and multi flowering
types. Now you need to cut back
any herbaceous perennials except
penstemon which should be left
so the stems protect the crown
of the plant. It is also still a good
time to lift and divide perennials
that look overcrowded too.
Let’s not forget the lawn, if the
weather is very mild and the
grass is still growing you can cut
it with the mower blades set at
least 1½” high and while you’re
at it when putting the mower
away for the final time give it a
good clean and spray oil on any
moving parts.
Our veg patch should not be
overlooked, if the ground is not
frozen or water logged plant new
cane, bush and fruit trees, not
forgetting to mulch them too.
Do not leave any rotten fruit to
lay on the ground around fruit
trees or bushes as they will carry
infection on to next year and
talking of infections if not already
done put grease bands round
both the trunk and stakes of fruit
trees to prevent female moths
climbing the trees and laying
their eggs. On to the winter veg,
you will need to remove any
yellowing leaves from Brussel
sprouts and stake if they look
vulnerable to falling over, then
snap the leaves on cauliflowers
and bend them over the curd to
protect them. Now if you have
a vacant patch in the vegetable
garden dig it over, weeding and
incorporating well-rotted manure
as you go.
But there are sights to see as well
there are some amazing colours
on display alongside the Pampas
grass, tall grass with even taller
plumes called Cortaderia Selloana.
Then we have Honeysuckle with
creamy white sweet smelling
flowers, Lonicera Fragrantissima.
But by far the most striking is
Callicarpa, this is a shrub with
beautiful bright purple berries, as
pictured.

LEADERS NEEDED
In North Tameside Scouts
there are over a thousand
Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and
Explorers in eight Scout
Groups and four Units
which is a lot of young
people that want to be in
the Adventure of Scouting,
the only problem is that
they haven’t got enough
leaders and helpers to give
them the full Scouting
Adventure.
You don’t need to be so
adventurous like Bear Grylls to be
a Leader. Leaders are people over
18 years, there is no upper age
limit, who wish to be fully involved
as a leader, accepting the Scout
Law and Promise and wearing
the Scout uniform and being fully
trained in their relevant section,
Beavers 6 to 8 years, Cubs 8 to
10, Scouts 10 to14 and Explorers
14 to 18. There are many other
support roles in Scouting like
handy in a kitchen, good with
numbers, good at DIY and want to
help in Scouting to help the Scout
leaders and the young people and
you don’t need to make the Laws
and Promises but you must accept
the principle of them, you don’t
need to wear a uniform, you don’t
need to be fully trained but there
is a little training for everyone
about Scouting and Safety, but you
do need a police check, CRB. You
could help out weekly, monthly or
just when you can fit it in say at
one off events or camps, there are
even roles in Scouting where you
don’t need to work with young
people, like if you are handy you
could help in maintaining their
headquarters or fund raising for
the Scout Groups. In Scouting
you will have a brilliant time, gain
new friends and help build your
personal skills, like teamwork,
confidence and leadership.
A recent survey conducted
nationwide said 90% of volunteers
enjoyed Scouting. There are some
waiting lists for the young people
joining Scouting due the lack of
volunteers in Scouting. If you think
you could help in anyway contact
Alan Fish on the Scouts Helpline
07931765120 alan.fish.161te@
gmail.com or go to www.scouts.
org.uk for more information or
to find your nearest Scout Group.
Alan said, “I am happy to talk to
anyone about helping at Scouts as
we do need more volunteers to
help us as Leaders or Helpers, I
still enjoy Scouting, camping and
working with young people and I
am 64”.

GRAVITY
Sandra Bullock and George Clooney are
cast adrift in space in this intense 3D
sci-fi thriller! Medical engineer Dr Ryan
Stone (Sandra Bullock) is on her very first
mission aboard the space shuttle Explore.
Her commander is veteran astronaut Matt
Kowalsky (George Clooney), who’s on his
final flight before retiring. But a seemingly
routine spacewalk 372 miles above the
Earth ends in disaster when satellite
debris ploughs into the shuttle. The impact
catapults Stone and Kowalsky into the
unforgiving blackness. An eerie silence
tells them they have also lost contact with
NASA altogether. With a finite supply of
oxygen, their prospects seem bleak. But
panic and fear gives way to a realisation
that their only hope of survival is to work
together and travel further into deep
space. ‘Children of Men’ director Alfonso
Cuaron returns to sci-fi with this palmmoistening survival thriller, brilliantly shot
in immersive 3D.
LAST VEGAS
Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro and
Morgan Freeman star in a riotous
sixtysomething bachelor party comedy!
Billy (Michael Douglas) has always been
happily single. But now he’s in his sixties,
he finally feels it’s time to settle down and
get married. After all, his intended bride
is getting on a bit too. She’s nearly 32. So
Billy calls childhood friends Paddy (Robert
De Niro), Archie (Morgan Freeman) and
Sam (Kevin Kline) with a plan. They’re
going back to Las Vegas together to party
like it’s 1959! Trouble is, Archie is not in
the best of health these days. What’s more,
when the aging quartet arrive in Las Vegas,
they find their old haunts have changed
out of all recognition since they were
young. Unresolved issues between them
soon bubble to the surface too. ‘National
Treasure’ director Jon Turteltaub’s
brilliantly cast comedy brings together
four Oscar-winning screen legends for a
feast of senior misbehaviour!
ENDERS GAME
Harrison Ford returns to space for an
epic sci fi thriller in which elite soldiers
are trained to battle alien invaders. When
an insectoid alien race known as the
Formics attempted an invasion of the
Earth, they were only narrowly defeated.
Mankind’s greatest hero was International
Fleet Commander Mazer Rackham (Ben
Kingsley), without whom all would have
been lost. Now Colonel Hyrum Graff
(Harrison Ford) is determined that we
should be ready for the Formics’ inevitable
return. So he has established a Battle
School in the hope of finding the next
Mazer Rackham. Shy Ender Wiggin
(Asa Butterfield) is swiftly identified
as the star pupil thanks to his
brilliant strategic mind. But will he
withstand the rigours of training? At
stake is nothing less than the future
of the human race. ‘X-Men Origins:
Wolverine’ director Gavin Hood’s
thrill-packed adaptation of Orson
Scott Card’s prescient sci fi novel
boasts a brilliant multi-generational
cast.
ESCAPE PLAN
Action legends Stallone and
Schwarzenegger team up to break
out of the world’s most high-tech
jail! Ray Breslin (Sylvester Stallone)
is a man who escapes from prisons
for a living. That’s because he’s a
leading authority on the design of
impregnable jails. He knows that the
key to success is knowledge of the
facility’s layout, an understanding of its
routines, and assistance - either from
the inside or outside. Tricked into
testing the security of a highly fortified,
state-of-the-art prison named The
Tomb, Breslin finds himself wrongfully
imprisoned and at the mercy of
sinister warden Hobbs (Jim Caviezel).
His only hope of seeing the light of day
again is to team up with old lag Emil
Rottmayer (Arnold Schwarzenegger)
and formulate the greatest prison
break of all time! This pulse pounding
action movie marks the first time that
Stallone and Schwarzenegger have
appeared together in leading roles.
CARRIE
Chloe Grace Moretz stars in this
chilling remake of the Stephen King
horror classic. Carrie White (Chloe
Grace Moretz) is a sheltered teenager
who is bullied by her schoolmates and
abused at home by her religious fanatic
mother Margaret (Julianne Moore). But
Carrie has a remarkable secret - she
has telekinetic powers that she can
manifest at will. When the bullies at
school decide to pull a cruel prank on
Carrie at the prom, it leads to horrifying
consequences. Stephen King’s first
published novel, Carrie was originally
adapted by director Brian De Palma in
1976 with memorable performances
from Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie and a
youthful John Travolta. The classic original
is a frightening yet deeply poignant story
of a teenager whose supernatural abilities
lead to tragedy. And now, the 2013
version promises to introduce the story
to a whole new generation. One thing’s
for certain - you will know her name!
