The goal of this course is to provide practicing surgical pathologists with cutting-edge as
well as practical updates for improving their diagnostic skills in their approach to
inflammatory and neoplastic lesions in GI, gynecologic, pulmonary, lung, head and neck
and soft tissue pathology. Emphasis will be placed on providing diagnostic criteria for
each entity and presenting diagnostic pearls in avoiding over- and under-diagnosis.
Course objectives are to cover in detail:
■ Cost-effective use of appropriate ancillary diagnostic techniques including
immunohistochemistry and molecular assays
■ Review of the most up-to-date classification and staging of neoplastic processes
■ State-of-the-art diagnostic criteria for distinguishing benign, borderline and malignant
lesions

MAUNA KEA RESORT, BIG ISLAND OF HAWAII
THE MAUNA KEA RESORT, located on the sunny
Kohala Coast, includes the renovated Mauna Kea
Beach Hotel and the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel, each
overlooking soothing white sand beaches ranked
among the world’s best beaches by Conde’ Nast
Traveler.
“Every great beach deserves a great hotel.”
This was said by Laurance S. Rockefeller, who
founded The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel in 1965. Five
decades later, following a $150 million repair and renovation, The Mauna Kea once again stands as a landmark of luxury on the Big Island's golden Kohala Coast.
The Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel has defined Big
Island luxury since its opening in 1994. As the second
phase in Rockefeller’s creation of the Mauna Kea
Resort, the hotel property shares 1,839 acres of oceanfront paradise with the legendary Mauna Kea Beach
Hotel. Perfectly nestled into the bluffs above the
#1-rated Hapuna Beach, the hotel presents a flowing,
contemporary Hawaiian style, where guests experience the true essence of rejuvenation.
The Big Island is a treasure trove of exploration,
incredible scenery and phenomenal places to visit.
See the mighty mountains, Mauna Loa (13,679 feet)
and lofty snow clad Mauna Kea (13,796 feet), Kilauea
Volcano, the Kau Desert, gorgeous waterfalls, the Puna
Fern Forest, the colorful orchids of Hilo, Volcanos

Dr. Richard L. Kempson:
Surgical Pathology of the Breast,
Female Genital Tract, Head & Neck and Lung
JULY 20 – 23, 2015
Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel/Mauna Kea Resort,
Big Island of Hawaii
Richard L. Kempson, M.D., is Professor Emeritus
of Pathology at Stanford University School of
Medicine. He received his MD and anatomic
pathology training from Tulane University School of
Medicine and was a surgical pathology fellow and
then Assistant Professor of Pathology and Surgical
Pathology at Washington University School of
Medicine. He later moved to Stanford University
Medical Center where he served as a Professor
and the Co-Director for the department of Surgical
Pathology for over 30 years. Together with Dr.
Ronald Dorfman he established an internationally
recognized residency and surgical fellowship
program, which went on to train more than 275
pathologists in the art and science of diagnostic
surgical pathology. He has served as the President
USCAP, the Association of Directors of Anatomic
and Surgical Pathology, the Arthur Purdy Stout
Society, and the California Society of Pathologists.
He is one of the major thought contributors to the
current practice of diagnostic surgical pathology,
particularly in gynecologic, breast, and soft tissue
pathology.
Scientific Symposiums International is
pleased to honor Dr. Kempson in this special
tribute surgical pathology course and to celebrate
his illustrious career with fellow physicians and
Dr. Kempson’s past residents, who represent
locations across the United States, Canada and
other countries around the world.
