COURSE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES A Practical Approach to Common Problems in Surgical Pathology: Focus on GI, GU, Soft Tissue, Lung and Head & Neck Pathology The goal of this course is to provide practicing surgical pathologists with cutting-edge as well as practical updates for improving their diagnostic skills in their approach to inflammatory and neoplastic lesions in GI, gynecologic, pulmonary, lung, head and neck and soft tissue pathology. Emphasis will be placed on providing diagnostic criteria for each entity and presenting diagnostic pearls in avoiding over- and under-diagnosis. Kempson, M.D., is Professor Emeritus of Pathology at Stanford University School of Medicine. He received his MD and anatomic pathology training from Tulane University School of Medicine and was a surgical pathology fellow and then Assistant Professor of Pathology and Surgical Pathology at Washington University School of Medicine. He later moved to Stanford University Medical Center where he served as a Professor and the Co-Director for the department of Surgical Pathology for over 30 years. Together with Dr. Ronald Dorfman he established an internationally recognized residency and surgical fellowship program, which went on to train more than 275 pathologists in the art and science of diagnostic surgical pathology. He has served as the President USCAP, the Association of Directors of Anatomic and Surgical Pathology, the Arthur Purdy Stout Society, and the California Society of Pathologists. He is one of the major thought contributors to the current practice of diagnostic surgical pathology, particularly in gynecologic, breast, and soft tissue pathology. Course objectives are to cover in detail: ■ Criteria for the diagnosis of controversial entities both benign and malignant, as well as recently described neoplasms ■ Establish criteria for diagnosis of inflammatory disorders. Surgical Pathology of the Breast, Female Genital Tract, Head & Neck and Lung The goal of this course is to provide practicing and in-training surgical pathologists with practical updates for improving diagnostic skills in the areas of soft tissue tumors, proliferative breast lesions, uterine neoplasms, bone tumors, and head and neck lesions. Emphasis placed on updated classification systems and avoiding practical problems in over or under diagnosis. Course objectives to be covered: ■ Updates in understanding and diagnostic terminology for soft tissue tumors, proliferative breast lesions, uterine neoplasms and viral-associated ENT tumors ■ Familiarity with variants of neoplasia and normalcy at anatomic sites that cause diagnostic difficulty or have important clinical significance ■ Understanding current thinking regarding spindle cell and vascular lesions of the breast, interstitial lung disease and uterine mixed mullerian tumors. ■ Developing an approach to difficult diagnoses in ENT lesions, lung carcinomas, mimics of endometrial carcinoma, uterine smooth muscle tumors and uncommon breast lesions. Course objectives are to cover in detail: ■ Appropriate use of ancillary immunohistochemical stains and molecular assays for a definitive diagnostic work-up in difficult cases ■ Discussion of most recent criteria for distinguishing benign from malignant entities in the GI, gynecologic, genitourinary and pancreaticobiliary tracts. ■ Focus on staging dilemmas in neoplasms in different organs ■ Practical guidance in assisting with diagnostic pitfalls in order to avoid misdiagnosis Dermatopathology in Paradise: Highlighting Oral Pathology, Soft Tissue Tumors and Lymphoma The goal of this course is to provide Dermatopathologists, Surgical Pathologists and Dermatologists with practical, state-of-the-art updates and strategies for improving diagnostic skills on cutaneous and oral lesions, with an emphasis on avoiding over-or under-diagnosis. His contributions to medical literature include the first comprehensive descriptions of bacillary angiomatosis, primitive polypoid granular cell tumor and nephrogenic fibrosing dermapathy, and many studies of Spitz's nevus. He is a graduate of the College of William & Mary and the University of Virgina School of Medicine and Board certified in Anatomic Pathology. He is author of over 250 major publications and over 300 national and international invited speakerships. Dr. Mills is editor-inchief of the American Journal of Surgical Pathology and two major pathology textbooks, Histology for Pathologists and Diagnostic Surgical Pathology. SCHNITT, M.D., is currently Director of the Division of Anatomic Pathology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a consultant in Pathology at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, co-leader of the Dana Farber Harvard Cancer Center Breast Program, and a Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School. An internationally recognized expert in breast pathology, Dr. Schnitt has published over 300 original articles, review articles, editorials, commentaries, and book chapters, primarily in breast diseases. The author of a popular breast pathology textbook entitled “Biopsy Interpretation of the Breast”, it is in its second edition, as well as in Chinese. He is one of the editors of the 4th Edition of the “World Health Organization Classification of Tumours of the Breast”, published in 2012 and been cited in multiple editions of “The Best Doctors in America” and “America’s Top Doctors”. Dr. Schnitt is a Past President of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology and has lectured extensively worldwide. His research interests and contributions to the understanding of benign breast diseases and breast cancer have been broad, but have largely focused on risk factors for local recurrence in patients with invasive breast cancer and ductal carcinoma in situ treated with breast conserving therapy, benign breast disease and breast cancer risk, and stromal-epithelial interactions in breast tumor progression.
