Turn carnival game odds in your favor
Mid- to late-summer is peak carnival and fair
season. During this time of year, empty fields and
parking lots are transformed into entertainment
wonders featuring rides, foods and plenty of
games of chance.
Carnival games are a fun diversion. Thousands
and thousands of fair goers test their luck at these
games when carnivals roll into town. Games often
seem as though they are stacked in the house’s
favor, but games are not impossible to win. A
few pointers can increase any player’s chances of
winning.
• Ring toss: The object of this game is to throw
a ring and have it settle around the neck of a
bottle. For the best chances, toss the ring so that
it remains as flat horizontally as possible. Think
of throwing it as you would a Frisbee®.
• Milk bottle pyramid: In this game,
participants have to throw a softball to knock
over milk bottles stacked in a pyramid. It seems
easy, but sometimes the weight of the softball is
not in proportion to the weight of the bottles. The
ball may be filled with cork, and the bottles may
be weighted on the bottom. Aim for the center of
the two lowest bottles and throw the ball as hard
as you can.
• Basketball shot: In this game, the rim of the
basketball net is likely smaller than regulation
and the backboard may be stiffer than players
are accustomed to. In addition, the ball may be
overinflated so that it is more bouncy. Try a high
arc that will help you swish the ball. Otherwise,
aim for the top of the square on the backboard so
that the ball will bank right into the net.
• Whack-a-mole: This game is fun because a
player can go after whichever critter pops out of
the hole. A key advantage to this game is never
to raise the mallet higher than the height of the
mole. This ensures a faster swing and a quicker
resetting to hit the next
mole that pops up.
•
Balloons
and
darts: To counteract
potentially dull darts,
look for the shiniest, thinnest balloons. Those
are the ones that are inflated the most. This will
increase your chances of popping a balloon.
• Frog toss: Young children are drawn to this
game because they get to launch a rubber frog
into the air and throw it toward a lily pad. The
chance of getting wet combined with pounding
a mallet can make this game quite attractive. To
improve your odds of winning, make the frog as
small as possible by folding its legs underneath
the body. Aim high so that the frog is launched
in a high arc and has a better chance of landing in
that lily pad cup.
Carnival games can be entertaining. Players
have a greater chance of taking home a prize if
they learn some secrets of each game they play.

deeper and offer broader menus. Food festivals
allow visitors to sample many different treats and
may serve to advertise for neighborhood eating
establishments.
· Street fairs: Street fairs also may close down
thoroughfares in town. These events usually bring
together a variety of vendors selling their wares
in an open market setting. You can make a day
of touring all of the vendor booths and buying
handmade items from local artisans.
• Outdoor movies: Local parks frequently host
summer movie nights when participants can
view a movie on the big screen while under the
stars. This can be an informal way to get the entire
family together for a fun flick. Films are typically
family-friendly and schedules are available well
in advance. Bring a blanket and some snacks and
enjoy an inexpensive evening together.
Many people need not travel far for a little
summertime fun, as many communities host fun
events throughout the warmer months.

Summer is prime vacation season when
travelers take trips to every corner of the world.
While faraway destinations abound, those looking
for fun can also find enjoyable activities much
closer to home.
Many communities come alive during the
warmer weather, hosting an array of locally driven
events. People looking for a day of entertainment
or an evening of excitement may be able to find
an event that’s just a short car ride away. Pick up
a local newspaper or log on to your town’s official
website to browse a listing of events in your
community this summer. Here are a few events
you’re bound to find.
• Carnivals and fun fairs: Open land or empty
parking lots can be transformed into bustling
carnivals in a matter of days. Carnivals or fairs may
be sponsored by private businesses or local religious
organizations looking to raise funds. Some fairs are
established by the county and attract participants
from near and far. Carnivals often boast a wide
array of entertainment, from amusement parkstyle rides to games of chance to music.

The importance of clean gutters
Every autumn, trees and shrubs take on their
brilliant display of reds, oranges, purples, and
yellows that mark the end of the growing season.
Fall foliage may make for ideal photo backdrops
and scenic days in the countryside, but closer to
home leaves may be more of a hindrance than an
aesthetic pleasure.
The hundreds of leaves that adorn the maples,
oaks and other trees near homes will eventually
fall as autumn turns into winter. Some will float
down to lawns, while others will get lodged in
gutters and downspouts, posing problems that
can cause substantial and potentially costly
problems for homeowners.
Homeowners know that gutter cleaning is an
important part of fall home maintenance, but
they may not completely understand why. Gutter
cleaning can be a messy and time-consuming
project, making it a project many homeowners are
apt to put off. Waiting
to clean gutters can
lead to considerable
problems, so it’s best
to tackle the job well in
advance of the winter.

the ground. It may work itself right into the walls
and ceilings of the home. In addition to damaging
walls and ceilings, moisture inside the home can
promote mold growth. It also makes interior
spaces more appealing to pests.
• Excess weight: Gutters are meant to hold the
weight of traveling water and not much more.
Gutters filled with leaves and other debris can
quickly become heavy. This stresses the entire
gutter system and can cause the gutters to fall off
of the home entirely.
· Nesting areas: Clogged gutters can serve as
nesting areas for insects and birds. Mosquitoes
and other insects lay eggs in pooling water.
Gutters can quickly become breeding spots for
harmful pests. Furthermore, birds may nest in
gutters, creating unsightly messes and more
damage. Seeds that sprout in clogged gutters can
grow unchecked.
· Ice-damming: Left untreated, pooled water and
leaves in gutters can freeze over. Blocked water
can back up and push against the roof, lifting
shingles and destroying the roof in the process.
· Foundation trouble: Clogged gutters also
may contribute to flooded basements and cracked
foundations. Leaking water will pool around the
foundation, expanding when frozen and causing
cracks in basement and crawlspace walls. It also
can cause driveways and other cement areas
around the home to sag and crack.
Gutter cleaning should be scheduled in the
spring and fall of each year. Homeowners can hire
gutter-cleaning services to handle the job or do
the job themselves. Rinse the gutters with water
from the hose afterward to ensure good runoff. Take the time to seal any leaks as well. This
routine maintenance can save homeowners many
headaches and prevent some very expensive
repairs.

Leaving an estate to charity
When movie producer David Gundlach passed
away suddenly from a heart attack in October
2011, few people knew he intended to leave his
massive personal fortune to a local charity in his
hometown of Elkhart, Indiana. Gundlach gave
away all of his $125 million to the Elkhart County
Community Foundation.
One doesn’t have to be a famous movie producer
or sports star to donate assets to charity in wills.
Individuals sometimes make the choice to leave
a portion of their estate to a favorite charity to
create a legacy that helps the unfortunate. Such a
decision may surprise family members, so it may
be wise to discuss plans when drafting wills and
ensuring that the correct method of bequeathing
estates to charities is followed.
When a will is written, it is typically in a
person’s best interest to consult with an estateplanning attorney prior to making any decisions.
When working in conjunction with a financial
planner, an attorney can help you grow your
estate and ensure your assets will be distributed
according to your wishes.
When writing a will that includes charitable
donations, be very precise in the verbiage and
specify your wishes and intents so they are
carried out correctly. Just like feisty family
members, charities can be quite aggressive in
their pursuits of funding, particularly if they have
reason to believe that money will be coming their
way as part of a person’s will. In order to prevent
unnecessary battling among attorneys, it is best
to have all of your wishes clearly explained and
spelled out so the people and organizations who
matter the most to you receive the money -- and
that you’re not simply funding legal bills.
Leaving money to a charity can have financial
advantages for the other benefactors of your will.
A bequest to a charity reduces the size of your
estate, meaning less money is subject to estate
taxes. While you cannot benefit from an incometax deduction while you are alive, you will cut
down on taxes afterward, which would normally
take away money that was left to family and
friends.
Despite the advantage to bequeathing money to
a charity, it is not something that is very common.
According to Russell N. James III, a professor at
Texas Tech University who conducted a study
that analyzed 20,000 Americans over the age of
50 from 1995 to 2006, only around 9.5 percent
of those who donated more than $500 a year to
charity planned on making a charitable bequest
after their deaths.
Those who want to save money in a taxefficient way upon making a charitable donation
can choose to donate
an IRA account to
charity. This will save
your heirs money in
income taxes that they

How to adjust to a healthier diet
Change often requires an adjustment
period. Men and women who switch
jobs may need a few weeks before they
feel fully comfortable in a new office,
while students changing schools may
also need some time to adapt to their
new surroundings.
An adjustment period is also
common when people decide to adopt
healthier diets. Diet is often habitforming, and men and women will
need some time to adjust as they kick
some bad dietary habits in favor of
healthier fare. The following are some
simple ways to make that adjustment
period a little easier to swallow.
• Go slowly. Some people are capable
of going cold turkey when adjusting to
a new diet, while others must take a more gradual
approach. Unless a health condition that requires
immediate change is driving your dietary changes,
take things slowly so your body acclimates to its
new diet over time. Such an approach may make
your efforts more successful over the long haul
than making more sudden, drastic changes. For
example, suddenly cutting your daily calorie
intake in half may force you into old, unhealthy
habits when hunger pangs inevitably arise. But
gradually reducing your caloric intake over
time may make it easier for your body to adjust,
decreasing the likelihood that you will relapse
into bad habits.
· Explain your motivation to loved ones.
Adults, especially married men and women and
parents, may find adjusting to a new diet especially
difficult unless their spouses and/or families are
making similar adjustments. If you are the only
member of your household who will be adjusting
to a new diet, explain your efforts and motivation
to your loved ones. Such an explanation will
make them less likely to bring unhealthy foods
into your home. In addition, your loved ones
can prove an invaluable source of support as you
make this big adjustment in your life.
· Embrace positive results, even if they are
initially underwhelming. Just because you have
adopted a new diet does not mean you will see

immediate results. Fad diets
meant to last just a few weeks
may produce immediate results,
but such results likely will not
withstand the test of time,
and you may even gain weight
when you revert to some of
your old eating habits. The right
diet will produce long-lasting
results, but you must allow for
some time before such diets
lead to significant weight loss.
In the meantime, place more
emphasis on how you feel than
the figure that shows up on your
bathroom scale each morning.
Upon adopting a healthier diet,
you will start to notice how much better you feel
than you felt when eating a diet filled with fatty,
unhealthy foods. Remind yourself of this extra
hop in your step as you continue on the path to a
healthier lifestyle.
· Don’t give up. Your adjustment period will
require some discipline, and there may be
moments when you backslide into bad habits.
If that happens, don’t allow it to derail all of the
progress you have made since switching to a
healthier diet. Just accept that you had a setback
and resolve to do your best to avoid having another
one. The sooner you get back on a healthier track,
the better you will feel.

How shopping locally can help you and your community
find that such owners are more
inclined to price match or work
with loyal customers to find lower
prices through suppliers.
Diversify your home and lifestyle
Shoppers who prefer more unique
styles may find local businesses
cater to their needs better than large
chain stores. Larger retailers offer
the same products to customers
regardless of where those customers
live, so a person in California may
be decorating his or her home with
the same furnishings as a person
in North Carolina. But local shops
tend to produce more unique items
that are not available nationwide.
Promote entrepreneurship
Small businesses are an essential
element to the country’s economic
growth. By shopping locally,
consumers are showing their
support for this important segment
of the national economy.
Help establish local pride
Independent shops contribute to
the fabric of a community and
what makes it special and unique.
Tourists and other visitors will be
much more inclined to remember a
local shop rather than a big chain in
a particular neighborhood. When
travelers want to get a feel for a
community, they seek out small,
local stores that are much more
likely to stock a high percentage of
locally-sourced goods.
Attract other businesses
Private and public sector businesses
tend to gravitate around anchor
stores. Should a local store be
successful, banks, restaurants,
salons, and other businesses may
move in as well.
Shopping locally benefits consumers
in various ways, many of which
contribute to a healthy local economy.

Today’s consumers have more
shopping options at their disposal
than they did in years past. Though
the Internet may put the world at
one’s fingertips, more and more
shoppers are discovering that
buying locally makes for a superior
shopping experience.
The benefits associated with
shopping locally are many, and the
following are just a few reasons
why shoppers may want to look no
further than their own communities
when planning their next shopping
excursions.
Keep money in the local
economy
Locally-owned businesses often
put a larger share of their revenue
back into their communities.
Small business owners may be
more inclined to employ local
residents, giving more people in
the community solid employment.
Business owners may reach out and
support other neighborhood efforts,
such as fundraising initiatives for
charities and schools. By shopping
at local stores, you have a hand in
supporting these efforts as well.
Save money
When factoring in travel time and
the cost of fuel, shopping locally
makes more sense than driving to
a faraway mall. In addition, repeat
customers who establish a rapport
