CURE's Volunteer of the Year
Joan Reeves
Joan Reeves came to CURE in 1991 when her daughter
Stephanie was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Sadly, Stephanie
passed away in 1995. Joan took her heartbreak and reached out to other parents who
lost their child to cancer. Joan together with Joan Marcello,
another parent who lost a teenage daughter to cancer, became
facilitators of CURE's monthly bereavement group. The two
Joans (as we called them at the CURE office) would reach out
to all newly bereaved parents though a phone call, letting the
parents know they were not alone, they were there to talk and
invited them to the bereavement support group. This gesture
meant so much to our parents.
Joan Marcello retied several years ago from co-facilitator and
Pete DiCecco had the honor of working with Joan. The time
has come for Joan to retire from facilitating the bereavement
group but not from caring for our bereaved parents. Joan
continues her support by mailing anniversary cards to our
bereaved families, letting them know their child is not forgotten.
Joan has been an advocate for our bereaved parents, a compassionate friend and listener. The
CURE staff, board and families are grateful to Joan for her nearly 20 years of service to our bereaved
families.
CURE's Family Partner Award
Laurie & Eric Bauer
The quote "Volunteers do not necessarily have the time;
they have the heart" said by Elizabeth Andrew clearly
must have been about Laurie and Eric Bauer. They are
CONTINUOUSLY thinking about CURE and doing what
they can for CURE, despite their incredibly busy
schedules. Laurie accepted a new position in November,
yet constantly keeps CURE on her mind and continues to
make contacts and speak highly of CURE to those
around her. Laurie established a relationship with
Wegmans and collects donations of products from the
store, which are donated to CURE for our Recipe for a
CURE Sunday Brunch. She also gave a tremendous amount of time last year, procuring fantastic
items for the Brunch. With her new position, she thinks of ways she can help CURE, even if it's not
directly, but through her contacts. Eric gave his time last year at the Lilac Festival for the entire
duration of the festival, selling Vespa raffle tickets, KAKO hand creme and most importantly, raising
awareness for CURE. His efforts raised $1,500 for CURE! KAKO is a company that Eric founded with
the mission of helping non-profits raise money. He generously gives his time delivering KAKO hand
cream to local salons and collects donations for local non-profits. The connections and contributions
made through Laurie & Eric Bauer are tremendously appreciated and truly make a difference to our
organization. Laurie and Eric, we hope you enjoy yourselves tonight because after all, you are our
special guests.
CURE's Strong Partner Award
Rosie Obi
One of the most important events CURE hosts each year
is our Remembrance Service. It is usually held in
September, which happens to be Childhood Cancer
Awareness Month.
The service gives us an opportunity to celebrate the lives
of children who have lost their battle with cancer or blood
disorders. It's a beautiful program, and one of the very
important parts of that program is the music.
Every year the music is beautiful, and every year it's
different, fresh and relevant. That, is thanks to the effort
and dedication of Rosie Obi, music therapist for the Div of
PHO at GCH. Each year for the past 5 or so years, Rosie has brought together a talented group of musicians who
volunteer their time to rehearse and perform at the annual CURE Remembrance Service. Rosie spends hours behind the scenes preparing for the service. By collaborating with Kiersten,
CURE's Director of Programs, and other musicians and singers, Rosie works to pick the "just right"
songs for the service. Every year the music changes. And sometimes the musicians change. From current and past music
interns, to nurses and other hospital staff, to CURE parents and family members, Rosie brings
together a caring group of volunteers who donate their time with the hope of bringing some comfort to
CURE families who have faced the ultimate loss.
Rosie is always on the lookout for songs that might work well for CURE's service. It would not be
unexpected for Rosie to tell me about a song she's considering using at the next service - when we
are still 6 or 8 months out! Or, that a particular intern she's considering bringing on board, would be
a great addition to the Remembrance Service choir! Peds Heme Onc hospital staff who enjoy singing
are always encouraged to volunteer. When Rosie is not busy planning CURE's Remembrance Service, she spends her time at work
bringing music into the lives of patients ranging from infants to adolescents and young adults. Some
patients just want to sing with Rosie as she strums her guitar, or work with her to make a CD of their
favorite music. With others, she helps them learn to play keyboard or guitar, or maybe write a song. But it's not just about having fun and relaxing, one of Rosie's most impressive skills is her ability to
help a patient deal with pain or discomfort by learning to use music as a distraction.
Anyone who knows Rosie, knows that she brings a little bit of sunshine wherever she goes. When
you spend time with Rosie, you can't help but feel better! We could not be more grateful for the many
contributions of Rosie Obi, and are thrilled to award her CURE's very first Strong Partner Volunteer
Award.
CURE's Community Partner Award
Masci Electric
Margaret Mead once said "Never doubt that a small group
of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world;
indeed, it's the only thing that ever has".
The employees of Masci Electric have chosen to change
the world for our CURE families by giving them a
Christmas they otherwise would most likely not be able to
have. The employees have chosen to help parents during
the holidays by removing the burden they may find
themselves under when medical bills and expenses
become so great that the promise of providing a fun
holiday filled with gifts may seem impossible. The
employees of Masci Electric donate a portion of their paychecks throughout the year to build a fund to
purchase gifts for our CURE Holiday Shop and food baskets for families in need. This past year,
especially, we were blown away by their generosity. They provided a tremendous amount of gifts for
our families, including carefully assembled food baskets, which also come in very handy for our
families. In addition to the gifts and food baskets, four bikes were also purchased for our families
which we will be raffling off to our CURE families at this month's Survivor's Day Picnic, opening up
the pool to ALL of our families. We are incredibly appreciative of their continued support. We couldn't
make a difference to our families without it.
BOOST Founder Linda Bolan Wins the ESL Jefferson Award
CURE is pleased to share that Linda Bolan was awarded
the ESL Jefferson Award on Friday, May 8th in recognition
of the services she provides through the BOOST tutoring
program. In 2007, Linda's grandson Willem Bolan was
diagnosed with infant leukemia at just six weeks of age.
He underwent chemotherapy and a bone marrow
transplant, but could not overcome cancer's wrath. Sadly,
Willem died when he was just eight months old. Linda and
her family grieved the tragic loss of Willem. But in a matter
of months, Linda decided to put her energy into helping
children with cancer. Armed with determination to make a
difference, and with the desire to honor the memory of
Willem, Linda set out to do what she calls "Willem's work."
Since it's inception, BOOST has grown to 135 tutors, and
has serviced over 75 patients ranging in age from
preschool to college in Monroe and five neighboring
counties. Linda has boundless energy, a passion for
education and unbridled determination to help kids. She
quietly, compassionately and selflessly helps struggling
students become successful and confident students. Linda has also been nominated nationally for the Jefferson
Awards and will be travelling to Washington D.C. this month with Linda Morrison. She is being
granted the opportunity to have a meeting with a State Senator, where she intends on discussing the
need for increased awareness for childhood cancer research. Congratulations to Linda on her
success and the success of the BOOST program. You are making a difference to our families.
A Message From the Director
A note from the desk of CURE's Board Chair, Wendy Carney...
Dear CURE family members and friends,
I've enjoyed my turn at keeping you up to date but this is my last note from
the Board Chair desk as we have appointed Holly Dutcher as Interim
Director and she'll be taking this column over. The board is so thankful for all
that the staff and volunteers do for CURE and things are sure to move
forward more consistently and quickly now that we have interim leadership in
place. Holly has been part of our CURE family for 5 years now. She started
volunteering with us back in 2010 and that passion has evolved through 4
years of organizing Cutting for a CURE, and a brief appointment to our
board prior to her being hired as Associate Director in April of 2014. We are
grateful for her passion and willingness to take this leap as she continues to
build upon our foundation for moving this organization forward. Her love for
our vision, mission, families, and volunteers is evident. I also want to give a
shout out of thanks to her husband Chris for sharing her with us!
We held our Annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner on May 11, 2015 at Raymour and Flannigan in
Henrietta, NY. As always it was a fun, food filled, and amazing opportunity for us to connect with our
volunteers more personally and appreciate all that they do for CURE. Our volunteers are excellent,
and so dedicated we actually had some of them ask how they could help with dinner! We told them
they could help by sitting down and enjoy the evening. We love you all!
On June 7, 2015 we will hold our annual Survivor's Day Picnic at Genesee Valley Park's Roundhouse
Shelter. This event honors all of our survivors at a family style picnic. On June 14, 2015 we will be holding our 4th Annual Cutting 4 A CURE at several locations, details
are on our website or you can contact [email protected] . Other upcoming events include our Brick Laying Ceremony to remember those we have lost over the
past year along with an educational program titled "The Loss of a Child and its Impact on the Family"
(June 17th at CURE) and Rockin' and Knockin' Pink 3 hosted externally by Fight Club of Rochester
(July 18th). We also have our 13th Annual CURE Kids Cancer Classic Golf Event coming up on
August 12th. I'd like to thank Brighton Securities for being the Presenting Sponsor of the event, and
the Rochester Razor Sharks team for partnering with us to put on what plans to be an awesome
tournament this year. Last, but certainly not least, I would really like to send a heartfelt, HUGE thank
you to the amazing CURE staff! They are the hardest working employees ever and they have run
things very smoothly over the past few months. Thank you for all you do for CURE!

American Cup Soccer Game
July 17-19, 2015
The Churchville Soccer Club will host the Annual Kohl's US Youth Soccer
American Cup, the largest recreational youth soccer tournament in the
United States, at Churchville Park from July 17-19 2015. The Under-6
through Under-19 boys and girls participating will bring together more than
50 teams on 11 soccer fields and they will play in honor of Lydia Tata, a 9
year old Rec player who lost her battle with cancer earlier this year.
Proceeds from the Tournament will go to the CURE Childhood Cancer
Association based here in Rochester NY in Lydia's name.

This year the Churchville Soccer Club and the United States Youth Soccer
Association have agreed that the Tournament will be named in honor of
Lydia as the "Kohl's USYSA Lydia Tata Memorial American Cup".
The Kohl's American Cup offers youth soccer players an opportunity to play
in a high-quality tournament in a fun, family-like atmosphere. The program
was started in 2000 as an avenue to highlight recreational soccer players
and promote fair play. Players receive equal opportunities and benefits within their level of play, with
an emphasis on participation, rather than competition.
The Kohl's American Cup Soccer Experience will add even more excitement to the Churchville Kohl's
American Cup. The Soccer Experience comes complete with larger-than-life inflatable soccer games,
numerous prizes and souvenirs for participants and their families.
This event is one of over 60 Kohl's American Cup tournaments being held from March to December.
All tournaments are open to players registered with a US Youth Soccer State Association recreational
league.

We wanted to be sure to tell everyone about the two great organizations that helped us during the
United Way of Greater Rochester's Day of Caring on May 14th! They weeded and pruned our garden
and even built custom shelving for storage for our

On Saturday, May 9, 2015 the Fairport boys modified and Varsity
lacrosse teams played to honor their former player and teammate, Blake
Cognata. At the game, all proceeds from ticket sales, concessions and tshirt sales were donated to CURE Childhood Cancer Association. The
event raised $8,400. What a wonderful way to continue to remember
Blake! Thank you!

We want to thank our friends from Visions Hotels and Home 2 Suites by
Hilton Rochester for getting mulch donated for our Julie Roberts
Memorial Garden, spreading the mulch and doing a FANTASTIC job all
around. We couldn't be more appreciative. The garden looks great!

K i d s h e l p i n g K i d s a t C r a n e S c h o o l
Thank you to the Crane Royal Comets for hosting the 16th annual Kids
for CURE at Crane School in late March. Under the direction of Physical
Education Teachers, Cheryl Barr and John Tuttle the Crane students
learned about CURE, gathered pledges from friends and families and ran 918 miles during one week of gym class to support the children and
families of CURE. An amazing $5,400 was raised! Over the past 16
years, the Crane Royal Comets have raised $84,900!! An assembly was
held in May and prizes were awarded to top student fundraisers. A
special thank you to all the students, their families, the teachers and staff at Crane School, Wendy's
Restaurants, Seabreeze, Adventure Landing and Club House Fun for making this event a huge
success and for making a difference in the lives of local families coping with childhood cancer or
chronic blood disorders!

CURE's Bereavement Group News
Education Program and Brick Laying Ceremony
On Wednesday, June 17, 2015 at 6 pm, CURE will be holding a brick laying
ceremony for those families who have recently lost a child to cancer. At this
ceremony, we will place the memorial bricks in the Julie Roberts Memorial
Garden. Immediately following the ceremony we will have light refreshments.
At 7 pm on Wednesday, June 17, 2015, CURE will be hosting an educational
program presented by grief loss specialist, PegDeBaise. At this program, Peg
will be discussing the "The Loss of a Child and Its Impact on Families". We request reservations for
this Educational Program by Tuesday, June 16. Please contact Kiersten Kunick at
[email protected] or at 585-473-0180 to reserve your place for this program. This
program is free to CURE families.
Families are welcome to attend one or both events.
Forever Changed
The Bereavement Families Corner
Grieving Fathers
Understanding and helping grieving fathers sometimes isn't easy. Men usually handle emotions so
differently than women and their grief is no exception. Unfortunately this difference added to the
stress of losing a child causes many parents to split up only a few months after losing their precious
child.
I hope this page helps grieving parents by showing the different ways men and women deal with
grief. Understanding and accepting ach others different ways of handling grief is so important to
supporting each other well. It often helps to ban the destructive blame and opens the way for a
renewed, deeper relationship between grieving parents.

Keeping Tabs on Cancer with Hailey
CURE has decided to support Hailey in her quest to collect pop
tabs and has started a program called "Keeping Tabs on
Cancer with Hailey". If you would like to participate, you can
collect pop tabs off of aluminum cans and can even ask if your
local school, girl scout or boy scout troop or even place of work
would like to participate. It doesn't cost anything to you; all it
takes is just a few seconds to pop the tab off your can. You can
either drop the tabs off at the CURE office, ask us to pick them
up (if there is a large number) or take them to your local
recycling center and pop the check in the mail to CURE. Every
little bit helps in support of our families and even this small act
can add up. If you would like, you can download and print this
flyer to accompany your collection container. Hailey and CURE

TouchStream
TouchStream, is a tablet-based monitoring system that helps
improve care coordination across multiple caregivers and
ensures that your loved-one's essential needs are met. The
tablet presents an organized view of each day, encouraging
important daily activities, tracking whether they are done and
providing verbal reminders as necessary. The system also
provides assistance managing medications or personal care
tasks and can track health statistics like weight, blood
pressure and blood glucose using optional wireless health devices. Family caregivers gain peace of
mind knowing that they will receive alerts when essential activities are missed or health readings are out

American Childhood Cancer Organization Free Medical Kits Available to Families
It is natural for any child to be fearful of new experiences and strange environments-for children with
cancer, the hospital can quickly become a scary, confusing place that they associate with pain and
sickness.
The Acco Medical Play Kit is a free resource designed to familiarize
children battling cancer with many of the medical instruments they will
encounter during their hospital stays. We hope to empower children
by helping them become more comfortable in a hospital environment
and giving them the opportunity to play the role of doctor/caregiver
rather than be forced into the role of patient.
Kids can test out their Medical Play Kit supplies on Cozy the Port-aCat, the soft, snuggly stuffed animal that serves as both a teaching
tool and a companion for children before, during, and after their
cancer treatment. Available for free to all children with cancer, Cozy
cat has strategically-placed patches that represent port access, bone marrow aspirate, spinal tap,
gastrostomy tube (g-tube), and a hand IV. With Cozy as a guide, children can use their medical play
kit to see where a particular procedure will take place, and he or she can even watch Cozy have the
procedure first!
One of the strongest types of fear is that of the unknown- by giving children the opportunity to better
understand and mentally prepare for upcoming tests or treatments, the Medical Play Kit helps to
move formerly scary/unknown procedures into the familiar category, thereby easing the child's
anxiety and fear related to certain aspects of treatment.

Boost Tutoring
For Kids and Teens
Boost tutors are available during and/or after treatment for as long
as needed, even after returning to school. These services are
provided free of charge by highly qualified teachers who are
dedicated to making a difference in the lives of children. If your
child is struggling with schoolwork, even if treatment was
completed long ago, please contact Linda Bolan at 585-317-7269
or [email protected] to learn more about how boost tutoring may be able to help. Tutors are available during the summer as well as during the school year.

Would you like to volunteer with CURE? We have several volunteer opportunities coming up and have events throughout the year where we
need help. If you would like to be on our volunteer list, please take some time to fill out this form

Recycle Ink, Toner, Small Electronics & Help CURE
Wondering what to do with your old ink and toner cartridges? How about that cell
phone that no longer works? Bring them to CURE and help us while helping the
environment by keeping them out of landfills! We have contracted with a
professional recycling company that will pick up items at our office and pay us a
small reward for each item we collect. Please call the CURE office at 585-4730180 to schedule a time to drop off your items. Interested in Donating?

allows you to create a tribute or to honor an individual as well as send an e card to that person letting
them know that you made your gift as a tribute to, or in honor of them. You also have the option of

CURE Bears of Hope and Love
Help the families of CURE and help the environment! When you deposit your
old bottles, the proceeds will go towards purchasing bears and outfits for
children undergoing cancer treatments.
Drop off any can or bottle with a New York State deposit at the Redemption
Center in Rochester (Suburban Plaza)
Henrietta Redemption Center

Make sure to inform the employees that you are dropping off bottles for the CURE Bears of Hope &
Love (Account 25). Put a smile on the face of a child with cancer and get rid of those old empties!

Coffee Group meeting for on-treatment families; Thursdays from 1-2 pm in the Kaiser Room,
4th floor Golisano Children's Hospital near the red elevators.
Voyage Beads- Patients can use colorful beads to build a tangible representation of their
journey through cancer treatment.
Vouchers for free parking are provided to families of CURE children who are hospitalized or
visiting the outpatient clinic.
CURE Bears for Hope and Love. Build-A-Bears are sent to children who are undergoing
treatment for pediatric cancer.
Emergency financial assistance for on-treatment families.
Comfort bag for newly diagnosed families.
Emotional support and guidance from CURE's Parent Advocate.
Educational Programs about school issues for patients and long-term survivors.
Bereavement Support for families experiencing loss.
Social Gatherings including Cancer Survivor's Day picnic, Holiday Party and Morton Fall
Family Fun Day.
