Scholar In Residence Weekend with Temple Beth El
During the weekend of February 14th and 15th, Temple Kol Ami and
Temple Beth El have the honor of hosting Rabbi Richard F. Address as a
Scholar-In-Residence. Rabbi Address is the Director of the
Department of Jewish Family Concerns of the Union for Reform Judaism.
Friday night services will take place at Temple Beth El at 7:30 pm. Rabbi
Address will speak about “Becoming a Caring Congregation: The Challenge
of Conquering Irrelevancy.” On Saturday, February 14th, Torah study will begin at
9:15 am in the Board Room at Temple Beth El. Worship services will be at Temple Beth
El at 10:30 am. Rabbi Address will present the topic, “To Honor and Respect: The Challenge of Care-Giving.”
We hope that you will be with us at Temple Beth El and join with our neighboring
congregation to pray and be enlightened. Please remember that there will be no services
at Temple Kol Ami that weekend. Temple Beth El is located at 7400 Telegraph Road,
Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, 48301. It is on the corner of Telegraph and 14 Mile Road. For
more information, call Temple Beth El (248) 851-1100.
Rabbi Address’ areas of interest and concern have as their foundation
the “theology of sacred relationships”: the changing Jewish family,
intergenerational care-giving, self-destructive behaviors, pressures on
youth, inclusiveness for those with special needs and the impact of
medical technology on our lives. In January, 2007, he received the
prestigious “Sherut La'am (Service to the People)” award from the
Hebrew Union College's Kalsman Institute on Judaism and Health.

“Where Are You?”
(To the “veteran” and “experienced” members of Temple Kol
Ami, I offer a brief word of clarification: I am not referring to my
annual Ayeka? Sermon from Yom Kippur!)
Simply put, I'm concerned: where are you? Especially on Friday
night and Saturday mornings? We Rabbis were taught, and
American Jewish experience seemed to validate, that attendance at Worship Services in the Synagogue increased when
economic times were rough, when people were hurting and confused and depressed. The Temple offered a place of comfort,
uplift, companionship, familiarity – all in light of that which
around us was difficult, disrupting, and alienating.
We want to add to the vitality and spirit of our Shabbat experience. It's nigh impossible to do with barely a minyan present.
We want to hear more people singing and sharing (and even
playing instruments!) Where are you? We have reconfigured
the chairs in the Sanctuary to enhance our being able to look at
each other, to sympathize and inspire each other. We have
brought a “toy and book chest” into a corner of the Sanctuary,
for those young children who can't sit quietly enough with only a
siddur in their hands . . .
We are enjoying a light Kiddush luncheon (hosted by the Religious Services Committee) every Saturday at 11:45 a.m. if there
is not a Bar/Bat Mitzvah service, and coordinated the timing of
the Worship Service and the Chevrat Torah study group so that
we can say kaddish and kiddush together.
Three out of four Friday night Services have been designated
with a 6:00 p.m. “Simply Shabbat” mode, encouraging young
children to be present as well as businesspeople on their way
home from work, before their Sabbath meal.
Of course, I would be thrilled to discover that you're not at Temple on Friday night or Saturday morning, because you're celebrating Shabbos with family and friends, candles and wine, Torah Study and Tikkun 'Olam (healing the world) projects on your
own.
But if that's not the case, if you're choosing not to be with US,
your Temple community, at these times, if we're not meeting
your spiritual needs and have not motivated you to help meet
the spiritual needs of others through Worship, please let me
know why! Phone, email, snailmail, fax – all will work.
Where are you?
We are attempting to organize a class and timetable for Temple members who are
interested in becoming Adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah in a group process.

What to do next?
As we are all struggling to make ends meet during these
difficult economic times, I find myself looking for new
ways to “spend” my downtime instead of shopping
(groceries and malls), going to the movies, meeting
friends at local coffee shops or wandering in and out of
local boutiques. When I talk with people I am also hearing the same situations as well as what to do with their
families that is cost efficient.
It’s a great family project and it helps others as
well. Turn your clutter into someone else’s
prized possession. Give things away to people who have more need for them than you
do. I have found you can donate just about
anything. A few suggestions are:

A Message From Rabbi Emeritus Ernst J. Conrad
Another Round: But Not The Last
It was just a question of time for Israel to
respond militarily to the continuing
provocation of Hamas, the virtual ruler
of the Gaza Strip, that has been responsible for dispatching missiles into Israeli
territory. For months, in-spite of a
hutna, an armistice, these lethal weapons
have been catapulted, sheltered by
home-made surroundings, into the Israeli
country-side, especially the immigrant
community of S’derot, but also the port city of Ashdod. Now
the international outcry: Israel’s response is disproportionate to
the Palestinian provocation; large protest peace rallies have
taken place here and in Europe. There has been a special
anxitey that local hotheads might provoke a Jewish-Arab confrontation.
The situation is more favorable for Israel than under previous
similar circumstances. President Bush, our President Elect
Obama, assorted Peaceniks concur that Israel must defend its
citizens, the civilian population, against outside attacks. This is
warfare and the adversary makes an ever obvious attempt to
shield the manufacturers of these weapons behind civilians,
especially children using private home, schools, government
offices, even Mosques, as workshops and storage places for the
raw materials. During several months of “armistice” Hamas
reservoir of materials has increased manifold, due to the lax
patrol of Gaza’s borders. Egypt only recently demolished the
tunnels through which supplies were sent to Hamas, also to
Islamic Jihad, the Fatah El, Aksa Brigade and other Palestinian
groups that deny the right of a Jewish State to exist.

So, how is this confrontation different from many previous
ones? The future of peace negotiations is at stake. Both Israelis and Palestinians are facing important elections at this
time. It is very likely that Benjamin Netanyahu and the Likud
Party will receive a majority of the Jewish vote and be asked to
form a right-of-center coalition government. Netanyahu is not
interested in a two-state solution of the “Palestinian Problem”.
He would promote, at best, an economic accomodation to severely curtail Palestinian enclaves. Surely, the wall would not
be stopped. Settlements, even outposts, would not be dismantled. To be sure: Jerusalem would remain the “Undivided
Capital of the Jewish State” and territory exchanges have never
been heard about. Compensation of Arab refugees still living to
the fourth generation in UN-sponsored and maintained Camps:
forget about it! Likud is supported in such a rejectionist
attitude by various Orthodox parties who firmly believe that
Eretz Yisrael is the Eternal Promise made by God to Abraham,
the Patriarch, and to the Jewish People.
Among the Palestinians, Mahmud Abbas’ presidential term is
completed. If he runs again or prolongs his mandate in some
manner, his leadership capacity has been so diminished by corruption and indecisiveness that, were it not for the UN, American, and European Union support, he could not exert any authority whatsoever.
But...we are an ancient and patient people. Here and there we
will endure the current mess, praying that conditions wil not
deteriorate into chaos and anarchy. Be this God’s will!

Sisterhood News by Abby Pook
It meant the world to my family and me for the
friendship, care and compassion that came from our
Temple Kol Ami Family on the recent loss of my
mother, Sylvia Brown. I would like to extend a huge
Thank You to all those who sent my family cards,
memorials, hugs, visits, phone calls, meals, desserts, offered caring thoughts, or just came to help
out. One of my “sisters” said, “we are family”. I
am so fortunate to be surrounded by such a wonderful family! Thank You from the bottom of my
heart. My mother, Sylvia Brown, was a remarkable
woman. She left a wonderful legacy!
January brought women out to hear about Female
Trailblazers in Art. We had a great turnout and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening. This month
we have invited our fellow Temple member, Dr.
Richard Ng, who will speak on Women’s Alternative
Health Issues. Come listen to Dr. Ng, Tuesday Feb.
10th at 7:00 PM. Look for information on our
Women’s Seder and Sisterhood Shabbat coming up
in March and April.
Last year TKA sisterhood had 81 members. I am
proud to announce that, this year, we have 116, up
from 81 members, last year. The larger number
comes from the new Temple members who have
received a free Sisterhood Membership for their first
year as well as Temple Members that have decided
to become part of our Sisterhood this year. We are
all going to make it our business to show all of our
new (and old) members that Kol Ami is definitely the
place to be.
Again, I offer my phone number for any of you who

In the last issue of The Voice issue we mentioned
what a great time we had at the Hope Hospitality
and Warming Center in Pontiac. We would like to
thank all of the volunteers from Congregation Adat
Shalom, Congregation Beth Ahm and Temple Kol
Ami who helped check in guests, cook, hand out the
blankets and toiletries and donated the much
needed funds and items. This project was such a
success that we will be going again next year!
Sunday, February 22nd is our next delivery date for
Yad Ezra. Please contact Lisa Redmond at [email protected] for further information. Remember this is counted towards a two hour community
service credit.
It is that time of year again! We are starting up our
great Temple Kol Ami team for the American Cancer
Society’s Relay for Life that takes place at West
Bloomfield High School. If you are interested in
signing up, refer to the link on TKA’s website.
Please contact Lisa Redmond at

Also on our website you will find a link for Nothing
But Nets. It is a URJ project that raises money to
buy mosquito nets to help prevent malaria. For
further information see www.tkolami.org.
Our social Action Committee meets the 2nd Sunday
of every month at 10am at TKA. Please feel free to

Grammy-Award Winning
Singer and Songwriter,
Melissa Manchester
Saturday, February 28, 2009

JCC West Bloomfield
Melissa Manchester was born in the Bronx and began
singing when she was just a teen. She attended the
Manhattan School of Music Arts, the High School of
Performing Arts and New York University before being
discovered by Bette Midler and Barry Manilow, who
hired her as a backup singer in 1971. Two years later,
Manchester released her first album. Among Manchester’s numerous Top 40 hits are “Don’t Cry Out Loud,”
“Midnight Blue,” “You Should Hear How She Talks
About You,” “Through the Eyes of Love,” “Come in from
the Rain,” “The Promise” and “Whenever I Call You
Friend.”
Manchester has combined her acting and singing talents in starring roles in Andrew Lloyd Weber’s “Song
and Dance” and “Music of the Night,” as well as in a
recurring role in the television series “Blossom.” In
1991, Manchester costarred with Bette Midler in the
film “For the Boys.”
Melissa Manchester is the first artist in the history of
the Academy Awards to have two nominated movie
themes – “Ice Castles” and “The Promise” - in one
year, and she went on to make Oscar history by performing both songs during the telecast. She also composed the music for 2 Disney animated features, “The
Great Mouse Detective” and “Lady and the Tramp II.”
A member of the Stephen S. Wise Temple in Los Angeles, Manchester will perform “V’al Kulam,” part of the
traditional “Amidah” prayer, during her appearance at
MusicFest.
