RABBI REACTS...
Three very exciting programs at BJBE are moving right along
under the name of "Interfaith."
Two of the three fall under the auspices of a newly named
committee, Kesher Interfaith. Kesher is Hebrew for "connection,"
and making a kesher with our non-Jewish neighbors is the goal.
When we make connections, we educate one another and build
relationships. In turn, we break down those barriers that create
prejudices against one another.
In the first program, we are sharing in a dialogue with the
Glenview Community Church. Our small Kesher Interfaith
committee and the GCC Interfaith committee have met several
times in each other's houses of worship, and set short and long
term goals. One Shabbat the GCC group joined the BJBE
Saturday Morning Minyan.
They asked us questions about
Judaism, and the members of the minyan responded in a most
informative manner. One Sunday our own Sandee Holleb spoke to
the GCC about Israel in honor of its 50th anniversary. She wowed
Jews arid Christians alike with her artifacts and charismatic
presentation. These are some of the short term goals already
achieved. Next on the agenda is a movie and dialogue on Saturday
night, July 18, open to all members of the congregation. See the
article elsewhere in this bulletin for more details.
The second program involves a "trialogue" with GCC and the
members of the Islamic Community Center (the Mosque) in
Northbrook. Participants in this program, including two teenage
leaders, are being trained to lead interfaith dialogue discussions.
This training will be open to a new group next year.
The third program has been named Interfaith Social Action. Its
primary goal is to form a network and communicate with other
religious congregati9ns, primarily in Glenview. Interfaith Social
Action is now in the process of putting together a resource guide
of Social Action activities all the congregations are conducting. A
future goal is to plan a project (a group Mitzvah Day?, Christmas
in April?, Habitat for Humanity?) in which all the congregations
can participate together.
Kesher Interfaith and Interfaith Social Action are not limited to
the committee members alone. If you are interested in Kesher
Interfaith, contact Diane Sachs or Shelley Riskin. If Interfaith
Social Action appeals to you, contact Michael Taite) or Renee
Friedman.
All three of these wonderful interfaith activities are about
building a kesher with our neighbors. I hope you'll connect with
us.

PRESIDENT'S CORNER..•
How time flies! Our congregation has just completed yet
another fiscal year. A very successful, spiritual, and peaceful year
on the whole. This past month or so, our Congregation has
witnessed and participated in several services and ceremonies
culminating this year: the SYG shabbat and installation of new
officers, Sisterhood shabbat and installation of new officers,
Confirmation, with its gift to our congregation of a new eternal
light (Ner Tamid) for the portable Ark, our annual meeting, and
our Board Installation.
Let me begin by speaking about the group of young people in the
Senior Youth Group who have inspired us over the past year with
the hard work that they have done to make their group strong and
viable. This group has been led by Rececca Bishaf, their outgoing
president. Rebecca attended almost every board meeting and
served as a role model to both our board of trustees and the senior
youth group. She was an inspiration to all of us with her
enthusiasm, perkiness, and intelligence shown while presenting her
information. The evening of their Shabbat services was no
exception. Good luck to the newly installed board led by
incoming president, Rachael Friedlieb. The senior youth group
represents the leadership of tomorrow.
I must admit I was overwhelmed by the incoming sisterhood
president, Sandie Sklar, who displayed a wonderful command of
Hebrew while chanting from the Torah. Each year the Sisterhood
proves over and over again how invaluable they are as part of this
wonderful congregation. As I watched the women participate in
the service and installation, I fully realized that we are blessed by
so ·much talent. While the women were repeating the Shema, I
silently said a Shehechyanu for all of the women. Good luck to
them all in the coming year under the guidance of Sandie Sklar.
At Erev Shavuot Confirmation services, we were fortunate to
have 24 young adults who committed themselves to Judaism.
These young men and women have persevered thru many years of
study in their quest of a Jewish education. It was inspirational to
see and hear them as they came forward to the Bima. I hope these
young congregants remember this evening and carry this memory
to their children and beyond so that it will inspire many more
young adults to be confirmed.
Our annual meeting on June 3 proved to be enlightening in
many ways as Rabbi Shapiro, Terri Argentar, Rebecca Bishaf and
myself all highlighted the happenings and events of the past year.
These presentations showed why we are a unique institution
among all the temples in the area. The annual meeting is held so
that each congregant can feel ownership in the temple and have the
opportunity to meet the Board and Officers.
Finally, the installation of the Temple Board was held June 12.
It was a wonderful evening to showcase the many volunteers who
have taken upon themselves the task of ensuring that our temple
continues in its leadersh ip position. The services were inspiring as
once again the Philharmonic ensemble did a magnificent job in
bringing us beautiful music. Thank you to all who participated
and to those who Jed the board over the past year.

SOCIAL ACTION ..•
The more things change, the more they stay the same. I've taken
the position of Social Action Chairperson for the 3rd time in 20
years(/ must be older than I thought). The problems of the world
in 1978, war, drugs, poverty, political chicanery, and social unrest
have been recycled. War today takes place on school playgrounds
with kids shooting other kids, drugs remain but it's not my teenagers, the disadvantaged still wait for our bagged lunches, politics
revolve around Monica Lewinsky, gender and color biases still
exist. Once I thought I could change the world. Now I realize I
can only place appropriate band-aids, plug a few leaks, and
motivate people to do the same.
Oprah is marketing volunteerism ... we've done it as G'milut
Chasadim for years. This coming temple year is going to be the
year of the volunteer and have we got a blue plate special for you!
We can dish out recipes for volunteer projects but the most
important ingredient is your time. The '98-'99 Temple Volunteer
Menu is geared for any age, stage, family or group. When you
help someone else, your Jewish soul will glow! There is a sacred
nature to acts that help l'tikun olum, to mend the world such as:
I. Make and deliver lunches to homeless shelters on W.
Madison St., Chicago. Feed the Homeless-4th Sunday every
month (3 hours).
2. Prepare and serve dinner at Inspiration Cafe-3rd Saturday
every month, Wilson Ave., Chicago. Desperately seeking two
families or a group of 6 or 7 for the summer months. (3 hours).
3. Serve brunch at the NEW JUF CAFE-2nd Sunday every
month, 2000 Sheridan Rd., Chicago. (2 hours).
4. Teach inner city kids how to plant a garden at the Chicago
Botanic Gardens.
5. Tutor. We worked wonders with the Russian Conversation
Club. Now our own Gary Riskin, who teaches 2nd grade at
Henking School in Glenview, would like to train volunteers of all
ages to help immigrant kids learn English. These youngsters live
right across the street. A convenient Mitzvah.
6. Collect. Our Saturday School kids collected pennies for ·
Mitzvah Day and donated $250 to the House of Daniel. If the
entire temple collects pennies, we could send a kid to OSRUI.
7. Sort the food collection for the Ark and Northfield Food
Pantry-Yorn Kippur.
8. Call and/or Donate for the Blood Drive in February.
9. Deliver Maot Chitim Passover food in April.
I 0. Participate in "Chanukah in April" with OLPH and rehab
houses in Glenview.
I I.
Listen to advocacy speakers and write letters to your
Washington representatives.
12. Donate your kids' used sporting equipment and we'll bring
it to a needy facility .
Mitzvah Day is in the works but without facilitators for each
project, it won't go. Say you'll be a one-time leader. Call Kathy
Kulick 205-1546. Our lofty ambition is to coordinate it with the
national Make a Difference Day and the local Crop Walk. Who
would you suggest for an inspirational speaker? This is an alltemple, inter-generational project and we look forward to working
with all the affiliates. We welcome suggestions on how you would
like to improve the world.

HOUSE CALLS... by Sheree B. Lipkis, M.D.
Familial Dysautonomia
Familial Dysautonomia is a rare, life-threatening disorder, which
occurs most exclusively in the Ashkenazi Jewish population. The
cause is unknown, but affected individuals have a defective
enzyme (called DBH, or dopamine B-hydroxylase) which converts
dopamine to norepinephrine. These biochemicals are both
neurotransmitters which are crucial for nonnal neurological
functioning within the brain. Patients with dysautonomia have
abnormal functioning of their autonomic and sensory nervous
systems.
Therefore, the diagnosis should be suspected in
Ashkenazi Jewish infants who can't make tears, can't suck
properly, or have low body temperature. In addition, abnormal
sweating, poor swallowing and episodic vomiting, muscle
incoordination, insensitivity to pain, and in1tbility to detect heat, as
well as widely fluctuating blood pressures, are also typical of this
disorder.
A cure has not been found, but various symptomatic treatments
are available. These include feeding tube placement (for necessary
nutrition), medication to control intractable vomiting, and artificial
tears. Many patients also require spinal surgery to correct severe
scoliosis (spine curvature).
This disorder occurs in l of 3800 Ashken.azi Jews. However, the
genetic trait is present in l of 30 Ashkenazi Jews. These traitcarriers can then pass their altered gene on to their children. If two
carrier parents have a child together, there is a 25% chance that the
baby will be affected with dysautonomia. (The disease is inherited
in an autosomal recessive pattern). Prenatal testing is available to
identify those at risk, but is usually done only in families of a
previously affected child.
Children with dysautonomia often have high intelligence.
However, their height is shortened; they rarely reach five feet. The
lifespan of affected people is unknown, but survival into the 5th
decade has been reported.
Familial Dysautonomia is a devastating Jewish genetic disease
which causes disturbing and life-threatening symptoms. Research
is the key to unlocking this genetic puzzle. For more infonnation,

THE SENIOR YOUTH GROUP IS GOING TO THE CZECH
REPUBLIC!!!
Our Quest for Kolin is a complete success!
We are very happy to announce that the SYG will be travelling
to Prague and Kolin from Aug. 12-19. We will visit the temple in
Kolin that originally housed the BJBE Holocaust Torah. We will
pray, then help clean up the Jewish cemetery in Kolin.
We would not be making this trip without the support from our
BJBE family. All of our fundraisers were successful, from the
Plant Sale in May '97 to our fabulous Silent Auction in Nov., to
our Sat. Morning Bagel Sale in April, to our T-Shirt sale, we were
able to raise over $25,000.
Thanks to all BJBE congregants for your generous donations of
time and money. To all BJBE staff and committees for your
tireless support and help thruout our fundraising efforts. A special
thank you to Bobbi Block and Shari Bauer, the administrative
backbone of our entire Quest. To Rabbi Shapiro and Rabbi
Memis ...you inspired us, you supported us, and you cooked dinner
for 12 people to raise funds for our trip.
We would also like to thank David Jacobson of Chicago Jewish
Funerals for his very generous support, and his recent donation of
$1,000 to our cause. Special thanks to the anonymous BJBE
couple who agreed to match all BJBE donations from May l to
August 12.
Thanks to Kaufinan's Bagels in Skokie who donated all the
bagels for our 4 week bagel sale during Sat. morning school this
past spring. Because of their donation, we were able to raise over
$500.
Personally, I would like to thank my family. My wonderful inlaws, Al & Mari Ann Schwartzenberg, who attended every
fundraising event we had. While their own children are far beyond
the youth group age, they supported the idea of this trip, and they
supported their family. Thanks to my father Ron Glickman for his
belief in this cause and my wife Lynn. Sometimes it seemed I was
at temple more than I was at home.
Any questions or comments, call SYG Advisor Larry Glickman

As I end my term as the ritual chairperson, I would like to thank
all the many people who have made by job easier and who have
made a difference at BJBE by lending their time, their energy, and
their insights to this special committee.
Some of the many things ritual has done in the past 2 years
include: amending the BJBE food policy to include a
recommendation that dairy and meat products not be combined in
the same dish when served at temple and temple-sponsored
functions; forming an interfaith dialogue with the Glenview
Community Church and the Islamic Center in Northbrook"
exploring ways to enhance family worship, making Shabba~
dinners a regular part of our synagogue life; establishing a quiet
room for restless children on Friday nights; increasing the number
of Shabbat Yeladim services from 4 to lO and having those
services be a part of our regular monthly worship, and sponsoring
festival celebrations such as a Tu b'shevat seder, Tikun Leil
Shavout, a Purim spiel, and the Yorn Hatzmaout celebration.
If you are interested in being part of a unique and wonderful
group of people; if you like to discuss matters of the heart; if you
like to examine the nature of worship and ritual within our
congregation; and if you like to make decisions regarding the nuts
and bolts of synagogue life, then come and explore the ritual
committee. Call Shelley Riskin, 847-724-7418, the new ritual
chairperson, for more information.
THE RITUAL COMMITTEE: Creating a Delicate Balance
Between Matters of the Heart and Synagogue Policy...
Sometimes in the throws of everyday synagogue life, we get
bogged down by the mundane but necessary decisions and
activities. You know, those petty, little details such as counting
greggars for Purim, or which way the chairs should be placed in
the sanctuary, or making sure there's enough tin foil to wrap 500
Chanukah candles. It's easy to forget the bigger picture of why we
are doing it and how it effects us and our synagogue family. I
admit it...I get wrapped up in counting out reservations for Shabbat
dinners, filling 400 usher positions, and mailing flyers. But the
wonderful thing about a committee such as · ritual is that I am
continually being gently reminded of why I am doing all this work.
The people make the difference and that is why I like this
committee so much.
For me, being a part of synagogue life has always been about
connections. Connections to the person sitting next to me during
services, connections to my family and community, connections to
my roots as a Jew, and my continual searching for a connection to
G-d. Being involved in ritual has been a way to continue my
search for those connections thru the dialogue of worship and
renewal.
I've always admired the generations of Jewish people that came
before us. They attempted to make Torah meaningful to their
generation and for the generations to come. We are doing the
same when we discuss and contemplate, during our ritual
committee meetings, our own rituals of worship and try to make it
meaningfu1 for our generation and hopefully for those in the
future.
Bringing meaning into our worship and making a
difference is truly what I feel our ritual committee is really about.
I will tell you one way that being involved in ritual and worship
renewal made a difference for me. I was Bat Mitzvahed last year.
It was always something I had talked about but I really didn't think
it was necessary for me. After all, I could already read, write, and
speak a little Hebrew. I took four years of college Hebrew and
went to school in Tel Aviv. What more did I need? What was
being Bar Mitzvahed going to do for me?
As I began to discover, tho, thru my discussions about the
importance of life cycle events and ritual, I realized that I needed
the Bat Mitzvah life cycle ceremony. Being Bat Mitzvahed was
very powerful and I truly felt the generations of my family and my
people up there with me when I was reading Torah. I also felt I
was making a difference for my children. I wanted to show them
that this is something incredible and perhaps they would be
touched and find meaning for themselves, as well, when it was
their tum.
Hopefully, our ritual committee has touched people here at BJBE
and made some sort of difference in enhancing worship and
creating connections for them. I have always thought of the job of
the ritual committee as playing a role with helping people find
those connections and helping them find a spiritual renewal in
places they may not have even thought of looking. We can always
look for spirituality in the liturgy. But there are other places that
perhaps we wouldn't think of to look: the art on the walls, the
movements we make while worshipping, synagogue dinners,
interfait~ dialogues, new ways to celebrate festivals and holidays,
and the importance of ushers to help congregants and guests feel
welcome.
·
I am reminded of a quote that I think is really appropriate for this
committee: "The true meaning of life is to plant trees under whose
shade you do not expect to sit." Hopefully, by touching others, we
ourselves will be touched. I know I have been touched in
une: :pected ways.
B'Sbalom,
Judi Goode
KESHER INTERFAITH ••.
a
A new committee was formed this past January to establish
relationship between BJBE and the Glenview Community Church
(GCC) in order to gain some knowledge about the faith of our
Glenview neighbors, as well as to educate them about our own
Judaic beliefs. We have also established a trialogue between
BJBE, GCC, and the Islamic Cultural Center (ICC) to learn to
facilitate conversation among the various religious communities.
The Kesher Interfaith committee has been meeting with the GCC
to establish some common short and long term goals in order for
us to work together and be active in the Glenview community. We
are very excited about some of our upcoming projects and would
hope that some of you in the BJBE community would like to be
involved. We currently are arranging a film discussion group that
is scheduled for July 18 (movie and time to be announced) to
allow some interesting interaction between the two religious
communities. If you would like to attend this movie, viewing or
hear more about this new committee and our projects, please call
Diane Sachs for more information (847) 559-8950.
NEW SHABBAT MORNING FAMILY SERVICES
It's Summer, "but just because we get a vacation from Religious
School, doesn't mean we take a vacation from being Jewish." This
is the message we send to our Primary School children on the last
day of school, and this summer here are two more opportunities
"to be Jewish."
It's the all new Shabbat Morning Family Services, led by your
rabbis. If you like Friday Night Family Services (and we know
your kids love Saturday morning services), your family will enjoy
these services, too. We also invite Middle School age children and
families, who we know always love a good story. Mark your
calendars now for July 18th and August 15th at 9:30 a.m.
...because we never take a vacation from being Jewish.

JEWISH HAPPENINGS AROUND CHICAGO..
by Judy Cohan (470) 9074
Summer in Chicago and there are lots of indoor and outdoor
things to do around the area to have fun with our friends and
families . Thru August 30, the Field Museum will present
Assignment: Rescue: The Story of Varian Fry and the
Emergency Rescue Committee is part of the U.S. Holocaust
Memorial Museum's exhibition. This exhibit is the story of Varian
Fry who showed extraordinary personal courage rescuing and
providing relief to thousands of endangered refugees in France
during World War II. As a result of his work, he established a
legal French Relief Organization. Fry saved thousands of refugees
among who were notable European intellectuals--writers, artists,
scientists, and musicians whose arrival in the U.S. changed the
character of American culture. To learn more about the exhibit at
the Field Museum, call (312) 922-9410. Also note that although
adm ission is $7.00 for adults and $4.00 for kids, Wednesdays are
free for all ages. A terrific bargain!
At Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies: On July 12 and 26 at 2
pm, psychologist Dr. Lichtenberg will discuss the exhibit and her
own escape from Germany as a child. This program is geared
towards families with older children, and is free with museum
admission .
On August 16, Justice Illuminated will feature the Art of
Arthur Szyk. On Sunday, July 26, a family workshop from 10 am
to 12 noon will be presented at Fundays on Sundays. Fabulous
Fibers is a hands on project where participants can create and dye
your own piece of felt from natural raw wool. Pre-registration is
required and is $5.00 per person or $15.00 per family including
admission to the museum. This is also the chance to give families
the opportunity to experience the new exhibit Family Life at the
Oasis, an interactive activity involving games and an imaginary
trip to Israel from exile in Babylonia. Spertus has resumed its
"Downtown Thursday Night" hours and will stay open till 8 pm.
The museum and the Bariff Judaica Shop will be open late on
Thursdays. Call (312) 322-1769 for details.
At our own BJBE, there are 2 great Shabbat morning family
services focused on primary school families. The first is Sat. July
18 and will feature family services, an enriched version of the
Shabbat school service. This could be a wonderful way for a
Haverah to meet over the summer and then to picnic or plan
another summer fun activity for the rest of the day. This will be at
9:30 am. On July I 0, there will be a Family Picnic-Style Shabbat
Dinner at the Grove. Dinner begins at 6 pm and Family Service
follows promptly at 7 pm. Everyone is welcome. This would be a
great way for Haverahs to have a special Shabbat Dinner and see
old friends from BJBE--plus no one has to volunteer their home
for the evening. No planning is needed--no muss, no fuss.
Reservations are due by July 6. Call the BJBE office for details
(729-7575).
Last for those groups who want to plan a Theatre evening, the
play Cabaret will be presented thru August 30 at the Pheasant
Run Dinner Theatre in St. Charles. This play, reviewed as a very
interesting, entertaining evening with audience participation, gives
people the uneasy feeling of really being in a decadent Jazz-Age
Berlin nightclub. Race-baiting stormtroopers will be hovering
over patrons dessert course, staying in character and really
drawing audience members into uneasy conversations.
The
nightclub where the action takes place is staged in unflinchingly
realistic terms and sets the stage for impending doom right before
World War II. This could make a very interesting and thoughtprovoking night out for a Havorot. Call (630) 584-6342 for
details.
