Lori Elliott Executive Director Greetings, Pennsylvania Snowmobilers! September is an exciting month for the Pennsylvania State Snowmobile Association (PSSA) because it is our annual chance to encourage you to join the only organization in Pennsylvania that protects and promotes snowmobiling . We have sent this issue of our “Keystone Snowmobiler” to you so you can learn more about us and see what we have to offer. As a member, you would receive an issue each month and would stay up to date with snowmobiling activities, issues and opportunities throughout the state! Our Mission Statement is: “PSSA is a statewide membership organization committed to enhancing the Pennsylvania snowmobiling experience of family recreation, fellowship, and tourism, by striving to assure high quality trails and safe, environmentallyresponsible recreational use of snowmobiles”. Our association works hard in many ways toward fulfilling our mission. See “Why Join PSSA” and “Top Ten Reasons Your Business Should Join PSSA” elsewhere in this paper for a sampling of what we have accomplished in the 42 years we have been in existence and see the benefits of membership. You can see more recent activity in the report, “A Year in Review”. In addition… Did you know...For the latest snow information, we have images from two webcams streaming to our website, www. pasnow.org , along with links to clubs’ Headquarters’ Headlines webcams? We will soon post images from two more webcams! Did you know… We host the “PA Powersports Show” each year? You will find new and used sleds and ATVs, trailers, motorcycles, used clothing and other snowmobiling accessories at our annual trade show! This is our biggest fundraiser to support our programs so please come with your friends on October 26-28 to the Lebanon Expo Center in Lebanon, PA. You can find more information at www.papowersports. com. We hold the annual auction on Saturday at noon and raffle drawings for a SkiDoo snowmobile and two Blizzard trailers on Sunday at 3:30 at the Show. You will be able to purchase raffle tickets at the show or you can contact the PSSA office or any board member, club or business member to obtain tickets. If you’d like to volunteer and help out, please contact Franz Martin at franz5904@ hotmail.com or 410-549-4688. Did you know…PSSA will offer a Youth Safety Class for ages 10-15 on October 27th during the show? You can call me at 1-888-411-PSSA to register your son or daughter for this class. A schedule of other youth safety classes being held throughout the state by our member clubs can be seen elsewhere in this newspaper each month and on our website, www.pasnow.org. Did you know…To facilitate safety on trails, we supply and coordinate the posting of navigational signs? You may have seen some in Erie and Potter Counties. We will soon post signs in seven more counties through our Signs Project (Phase II) grant from DCNR. Did you know… We work to build relationships and connections with DCNR forestry personnel and gas companies to facilitate alternate trails where drilling occurs? Did you know… We have a separate “Snow Angel” charity fund? Members donate Page 5 September 2012 Keystone Snowmobiler to this fund, and our regional directors nominate children in their areas with special needs whose families need financial assistance. Families of children up to the age of 18 can receive a $500 grant from this fund and our directors give small grants each year for the holidays. We grant approximately $5,000 per year through this fund! Did you know…We also have a FACEBOOK page, “Pennsylvania Snowmobiling”? You can go to at www. facebook.com/pasnow to interact with our over 9,400 fans on snowmobiling issues and events! One of the benefits of being a current member of PSSA is a free accidental death & dismemberment insurance policy up to $3,000 through American Income Life Insurance (AIL). Just last month, we contacted our AIL representative for a person with a PSSA family membership who needed to file a claim for this insurance. We are pleased that this program will be of assistance to him. If you are a current or former PSSA member, you should have recently received information from AIL. Be sure to check the expiration date of your PSSA membership on the envelope label to see if you are a current member. We also have a partnership with Liberty Mutual insurance, through which you can receive a discount on home and auto insurance through a PSSA membership. This partnership benefits PSSA in that we receive a percentage when our members sign up for coverage with them. This company also graciously sponsored the production of our membership cards and key tags. Some of our business members offer discounts when you show this card! We have provided a membership form in this newspaper that lists the different types of memberships. If you’re not a PSSA member, we hope that you will seriously consider joining the PSSA and help to secure the future of snowmobiling for everyone in Pennsylvania! If you join now, you will receive 15 issues of the “Keystone Snowmobiler” and 15 months of the above benefits for the price of 12! Did you know…You can easily join or renew your PSSA membership through our website with a credit card? Just click the “Join Now” button on our website, complete the membership form, and pay with a credit card. There are over 37,000 people who register snowmobiles in our state. If everyone would pay the nominal fee of $25 per year to help our association work, that would bring in $925,000 per year, and if every business and club associated with snowmobiling would join at the low fee of $35 per year…..imagine what more we could accomplish! Looking forward to a great snowmobiling season. Keystone Snowmobiler September 2012 Page 6 TOP TEN REASONS FOR YOUR BUSINESS TO JOIN PSSA # 10: Inexpensive: The membership fee is only $35 per year. #9: Print Exposure. Business Members of PSSA have their name, address and phone number published in every issue of the Keystone Snowmobiler. That breaks down to less than $3.00 per month! Thousands of people see the paper each month – not just thousands of random people, but people who have a sincere interest in your products, services or facilities. #8: Internet Exposure. Business Members of PSSA have their name, address and phone number on the PSSA website under “Cool Associates” or “Cool Dealers”. This is constant exposure that runs 24/7, all year long. Divide it out and it comes to about eight (8) cents a day! The potential audience is limitless! #7: Discounts. PSSA Membership entitles you to a discount on any advertising you elect to place in the monthly Keystone Snowmobiler. Business members also have the opportunity to participate in discounted marketing opportunities that PSSA pursues. #6: Representation in Harrisburg and in the nation. When someone introduces legislation affecting snowmobiling, good or bad, PSSA is ready to support whatever is in the best interest of its members. We monitor issues in Harrisburg and being a member of PSSA also means that the American Council of Snowmobile Associations looks out for you in Washington. You get representation with your membership! #5: Influence. PSSA is a member of the State Snowmobile/ ATV Advisory Council, which gives direction to DCNR in Harrisburg and throughout the State. Your membership gives the members of SAAC more clout and effectiveness. PSSA is taking the lead to establish connector trails to allow snowmobiling across the entire northern tier counties of Pennsylvania and in making trails safer and more user-friendly with intersection signs and 911 location stickers. #4: Job Security. Did you know that several years ago a bill was introduced in Harrisburg that would have outlawed riding a snowmobile after dark, even on the owners’ property? PSSA stopped that proposal before it ever passed the first Committee! And some years before that, it was PSSA that initiated legislation legalizing 102” wide trailers. How could a dealer sell new snowmobiles today if customers couldn’t have the right size trailer to haul them? #3: Staying up to date with everything pertaining to snowmobiling - not just here in Pennsylvania but around the US and Canada, too. The research conducted by the American Council of Snowmobile Associations and the International Snowmobile Congress is available for you to provide correct answers to the questions that customers ask. See www.snowmobilers.org or www. gosnowmobiling.org ! We also now have the capability to send e-mail alerts. #2: Customers. Being a supporter of their sport encourages snowmobilers to patronize your business! Impress your customers by supporting the only organization looking out for their privilege to snowmobile. Many people mistakenly think that snowmobiling is a right, and that public lands will always be available for snowmobiling. This statement is not true! If it were not for PSSA and other state and provincial organizations, there undoubtedly would be very few trails and much less grooming being done. And the NUMBER ONE reason to belong to PSSA: It supports the sport and industry of snowmobiling in Pennsylvania! Show your support with a PSSA membership! Keystone Snowmobiler September 2012 Page 8 MOVING FORWARD Thank you to all the volunteers who helped with summer trail maintenance projects across the state. Most clubs have projects that need attention during the summer months. Work continues in the Allegheny National Forest, Warren, Somerset County, Pymatuning, Erie/ Crawford, Elk, McKean, Potter, and Tioga, Clearfield and the Far East (and all areas not mentioned). Volunteers such as Jim Wolfe from the Kane area have spent many years helping where needed. I am sure every club has a person or persons such as Jim who has kept projects moving forward. Take time to thank them if you haven’t already. The Pennsylvania State Snowmobile Association (PSSA) is in the process of updating the web-site. Check it often. www.pasnow. org Reminder- you can complete your new or renewal membership on line with a credit card. Help spread the word to your friends and fellow riders to support the organization that is working to enhance the trail system throughout the state. PSSA needs more members to support and help improve the trail system across the state. All snowmobile clubs add a significant value to the state trail system and the economy. Most clubs also contribute to local charities. What can you do to help? Become a member of PSSA (it costs less than a case of beer or a good haircut or trip to the mall or a night out) Join a club Volunteer to help with projects on local/state/federal trails Volunteer/attend the Fall Show (call Franz Martin – 1-410549-4688 to volunteer) Sell/Buy a used sled/ good used clothing at the Show Contribute a worthwhile item to the Auction Buy lots of raffle tickets Support the PSSA charitable “Snow Angel Fund” – buy tickets Keep your local, state and national representatives abreast of the needs of snowmobiling both locally and nationally PSSA recently distributed over $98,000 to clubs for trail maintenance and grooming projects. These funds are the result of many hours of work by PSSA to obtain grants each year. These grants not only involve the writing and submission of a proposal but they also require many hours of documentation and follow up with clubs. Clubs must show a 20% match in either funds or volunteer labor/equipment. They are not a free ride. Unfortunately there is no guarantee that PSSA will receive these funds. We are now patiently awaiting word of the results of a recent grant proposal. These grants require real data to support the request for funds. PSSA needs to update data to show total club worth. To acquire this information PSSA will soon begin an on-line survey of clubs to gather information in support of larger grants to PSSA. This survey will be answered on line and used as needed to acquire more funds to help fund projects across the state. In addition to the volunteer hours/labor/ equipment already mentioned clubs also accumulate many hours/labor/equipment over and above what is needed to cover grants. They have more expenses than what the current grants can cover. Most other states ( to make a comparison ) reimburse clubs for grooming and trail maintenance based on the number of miles groomed and maintained. This varies from $300 - $500 dollars a mile. The return on this investment shows in the quality of trails in other areas and the effect the trails have on the state economy. PA has approximately 5500 miles of trail. We cannot improve the system without more consistent financial backing. We received word today that Glen Knisely, GPS/Signage Co-coordinator, can begin Phase II of the GPS/Signage Project. Glen will be contacting individual clubs to work out the details of what needs to be done in Crawford thru Tioga counties. Eventually all counties will be a part of this project. All trails will be placed on maps and this information will be made available on the PSSA web-site. Also standard state signage will be placed on trails using a county-number system. The fourth SnoCam was delivered to Clearfield Hilltop Howlers. You can view all the SnoCams on the PSSA web-site. Steve Matscherz, Director, has been helping clubs with the details of installing these SnoCams. Finally, I recently met with representatives of the Laurel Highland Clubs and the Department of Forestry and State Parks in Somerset County. Thanks to Dave McCarty, Kerri Schott, Steve Matscherz, Todd and Barry Harcum, Neil Diamond and Shelly Buckles for taking time off work to be a part of this meeting. The cooperation of Mike Mumau and Kevin Blair from Laurel Hill State Park and Ed Callahan from Forestry is greatly appreciated. This is just one example in the state where a working partnership has helped produce the Laurel Highland Bridge and the 75 miles of trail along the Laurel Highland Ridge. Much work has been done during the past twenty years to improve this system. Plans are now being formulated to connect this trail system and make it one trail along the ridge. The results of a project are always more positive when clubs work with others from the beginning of a project. This project will take time and patience to complete but it can be done. Somerset County Tourism is also interested in increasing tourism in this area. Thanks to Glades Pike Inn Bed and Breakfast for providing valuable information concerning this area. The next PSSA Board meeting will be held by Conference Call on Wednesday, September 5, 2012. Call or e-mail your suggestions to the Office 72 hours before the meeting. Your comments and suggestions are always welcome. Four months until riding season officially opens. Think Snow! Reminder: Ask a friend to join PSSA. WINTERS OF 2012, 2013, 2014 COULD BE FRIGID By Kirstie Hettinga, AccuWeather.com Staff Writer AccuWeather.com Long Range Expert Joe Bastardi believes there is a significant chance for particularly frigid winters in 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 into 2014-2015. Bastardi said these winters could be similar to winters of the late 1970s. He said, “While the most consistent of the cold is to the north, severe bouts of cold deep into Texas and Florida would be capable of affecting agriculture more so than we’ve seen in that last 20 years or so.” A combination of factors that parallel the precursors to historically cold winters is leading Bastardi to this forecast. He said, “We have a cold Pacific now. We had a La Nina, El Nino, then a stronger La Nina [similar to the cycle] that happened in the early to mid ‘70s that set up the winters of the late ‘70s.” The winters of the late 1970s were particularly cold. Bastardi believes the winters of 2012-2013, 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 will be similar. These weather patterns, plus the wild cards of volcanic activity and solar activity, have Bastardi looking ahead. “The last time we had arctic volcanoes go off, in 1912 - similar to what we had two winters ago - the winters three years removed got very bad across the United States,” Bastardi said. “If we put together the combination of La Nina, El Nino, La Nina again and we look at what happened when that happened before with a cold Pacific, and we also understand that the volcanoes may be involved along with the low sunspot activity, one could come to the conclusion that a series of very cold winters... could be on the way,” he said. Bastardi said this is all part of a natural pattern of reversal which he believes will lead to a crash in global temperatures over the next nine months, from the very warm levels set off by El Nino - as forecast globally by AccuWeather.com. In the longer term, this is all part of a cyclical event which Bastardi believes will return the earth’s temperatures by 2030 back to where they were in the late ‘70s at the end of the last cold PDO [Pacific Decadal Oscillation, or El Nino-like pattern] and the beginning of the satellite era of measuring temperatures objectively. PSSA and its member clubs have worked really hard to protect and promote snowmobiling in Pennsylvania. As Mini-Grants Coordinator I see documentation of many hours of labor by volunteers of snowmobile clubs on trail maintenance and grooming. Through our “Consolidated Grants” Project, thirteen snowmobile clubs in Pennsylvania have benefited from PSSA’s mini-grants in Rounds I and II. We received several applications for Round III, which will be the final round of our grant. At the time of this printing, our Mini-grants Sub-Committee met by conference call to recommend mini-grant funding from these applications. As soon as we receive approval from the PSSA board and DCNR, these clubs will be notified and their projects can begin. The dates for Round III projects will be the date of approval through January 31, 2013. We have extended the ending date for those of you with Round II mini-grants to December 31, 2012 so that you can have extra time to work on your trails and, hopefully, groom this winter. You may submit receipts for expenses between the dates of February 1, 2012 through December 31, 2013. Reports will be due by January 15, 2013 If you have any questions, you may call me at 1-888-411-PSSA (7772) or email me at [email protected]. The mini-grants project is financed in part by a grant from the Community Conservation Partnerships Program, Pennsylvania Recreational Trails Program funded through the Federal Highway Administration, under the administration of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of Recreation and Conservation. Its purpose is to help clubs repair and maintain trails and grooming equipment and assist with grooming expenses. The clubs have proposed a number of projects for trail maintenance, grooming and restoration in their areas. Have a great snowmobiling season! However, it is quite clear that over the past decade, the trend has been toward less snowfall on average. Ever heard older folks make the claim that it used to snow a lot more “back in the day”? Turns out that comparing the snowfall records for the past 25 years to the past 100 years verifies that claim…although the change is small. Without the PSSA minigrant program our club would not be able to carry on our trail and grooming projects. The fact that PSSA has been working with the DCNR has made it possible for us and other clubs in PA. to receive these much needed grants. For Don and I, this is a big part of why we continue to be PSSA members. Through them, we have been kept up to date on safety classes, snow angels and all the happenings in the state. If ever we need to contact PSSA for any snowmobile reason, we feel very comfortable calling the office, and have found them to be very helpful. We would like to thank Hartman Publishing Co. for their continued support of PSSA, and to congratulate them on their soon to be 24 year season publishing the Keystone Snowmobiler. Don and Carol Mosier McKean Snowriders Snowmobile Club The Pennsylvania Snowseekers Snowmobile Club, Inc. “THUNDER IN THE FOREST 7”, MOTORCYCLE POKER RUN FOR BREAST CANCER AWARENESS Hi all! On August 28th, the PA Snowseekers held their 7th annual “Thunder 7” motorcycle poker run to benefit Breast Cancer awareness. Though we all got a little wet, this event rocked and was a tremendous success! Many of us went up on the previous Thursday to make the preparations, and stayed and worked through Sunday late morning. This event is a great deal of work. I’m very thankful and extremely proud of our members who worked very hard throughout this event! The Allegheny National Forest is a beautiful place to ride. Though all of us enjoy it during the winter months on our sleds, it is also breathtaking in the summer in full bloom with fresh road kill! Stay tuned for information on “Thunder in the Forest 8”. I want to thank Rick Young from the James City Café for all of his help! Rick brought his band, The James City House Rockers out on Friday for the pre-run party. What a great time we had! With the weather getting wetter and wetter, Rick loaned us his large canopy for the post run dinner, door prizes, the silent auction, and poker hands! If you have a chance, stop by his place, the food is really good! Thanks Rick! I also want to send a shout out to Schlepp and 5 Toes from the Highland Hotel for donating and helping to get the beverages donated! Last but not least, I want to send out a special thanks to Franco Harris, (yes, I’m name dropping), for his continued generous support of this event! (Nice catch by the way) Indie Stahl, Silent Auction Winner, Daughter of Deb and John On a serious note, The Snowseekers club includes a few cancer survivors, and has lost a dear member to cancer recently. This event really hits home for all of us! This year, the main charity we chose was The PA Breast Cancer Coalition. Since 1993, the PA Breast Cancer Coalition has been a network of strength. Their strength comes in many forms: breast cancer survivors and their families, their small (but mighty) staff, their board of directors, and a core of hardworking volunteers, and loyal donors. The PA Breast Cancer Coalition is the source of action and information for women in this state with breast cancer. Please support them! www.pabreastcancer.org Cancer Sucks! Go Steelers! The Pennsylvania State Snowmobile Association (PSSA) offers this course free to anyone attending the PA PowerSports Show. Conducted by PSSA instructors, the course has been approved by PA-DCNR which regulates snowmobiling in the Keystone State. The PSSA urges all new snowmobilers, regardless of age, to take this course before operating their sled. Participants will come away better prepared to enjoy their time exploring Pennsylvania’s snow trails. The class begins at 12 noon on Saturday, October 27, and is held at the show location. The PSSA provides dinner for participants. The class continues until approx. 8pm. All class participants will be given a free admission ticket to the show. Just want to let everyone know what has been happening up on the mountain. It is hard to believe, but September is already here. When you’re reading this months paper, it won’t be too long until the days will start to get shorter, the nights will start to get a little cooler, and before you know it, we will be getting our sleds and trailers ready for a new season of riding. My wife and I are looking forward to the start of the riding season; and, speaking with the other lodge members, I know they are also looking forward to a new season of riding. Let’s all hope for a great winter this year with plenty of snow and cold temperatures. We have seen an extremely hot summer, so maybe we will see a cold, snowy winter. Not a whole lot has happened this past month at the lodge, so I thought that maybe I would do sort of a summer 2012 recap. This past June we all got together for our annual chicken bar-b-que dinner. This is always a very big part of our summer events. July had a few of us lending a hand at the Black Forest Fire Company’s annual Chili Cookoff. Every summer Hyner Mt. SMC members help them with this fund raiser. We want to take just a moment to thank them for allowing us to help year after year, and to say it was a really great event. August had some of us getting together to do some camping. A few of us stayed at Lyman Run State Park to attend the Woodsman Festival at Cherry Springs State Park. For those of you who have never been to this, you are missing a very good event. You owe it to yourself to try some year to make it to this event. Some of our members did some camping down at Raystown Lake and had a great time getting their boats in the water. One common denominator at all of the events I have listed was some of the conversation. Lots of talk of a great winter coming up, we hope! Well enough about summer. Our annual Snowmobile Safety class will be held November 17th, from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. To register please call Louise Davidson at 570368-2288, or e-mail tomkat1952@verizon. net. Lunch will be provided by the lodge; seating is limited to 30 students. We will be at the Power Sports Show next month in Lebanon. If you’re down at the show stop by to say hey, and talk to us about our club. We do currently have some openings for new members. Only a little more than three months until snowmobile season. Well that’s about all for now. Talk to ya next month. Dan Casey IN MEMORY Like what you are reading? Join PSSA and get more each month, all year long! We were saddened to learn this week of the death of one of our most valuable members, Someone Else. Someone's passing created a vacancy that will be difficult to fill. Else had been with us for many years. Someone did far more than the normal person's share of work. Whenever leadership was mentioned this wonderful person was looked to for inspiration as well as results. "Someone Else can work with that group." Whenever there was a job to do, a committee to chair, or meeting to attend, one name was on everyone's list, "Let Someone Else do it." Someone Else was a wonderful person sometimes appearing super human, but a person can only do so much ... Were the truth be known, everyone expected too much of Someone Else. Now, Someone Else is gone! We wonder what we are going to do. Someone Else left a wonderful example to follow, but who is going to follow? Who is going to do the things Someone Else did? When you have a chance to participate in your association or club remember, we can't depend on Someone Else anymore! The Spring Fling Raffle was a free chicken BBQ which included potato salad, baked beans and soft drink and only asking for a donation. Andy Kulp from Roulette helped start this organization in 2008 to help 275 children. In 2011 they were able to help 941 children in Bradford, Tioga, Potter and McKean counties. The Backpack program is kept going solely on donations of time, money and supplies. Their goal is “Helping send children to school with the supplies they need”. They are hoping to expand into the Kane and Mt. Jewett area by their 2013 distribution year. Town Coordinators are needed for these areas to help get the information out regarding the program. If anyone would like to help the children of these counties go to their website www.tofillabackpack.org. On July 7th some of our club members attended a vintage sled show in Elkland Pa. Glen Mallory, coordinator for our Winterfest vintage shows, was in charge. There were 55 vintage sleds entered and 5 swappers. The show people were from upstate New York and Southern Pa. Best of Show 1st place winner went to Allen Seeley with a 1975 Suzuki custom built XR500 and 2nd place went to Brian Moyer’s 1974 Alouette Left: 1968 JLO Engine Mini Brute. Class 2 Mini Sled first place went to Brian Moyer’s 1974 Alouette Mini Brute and 2nd place went to Josh Leuber’s 1981 Kitty Cat. The Best Accessory 1st place went to Sean Lias for a 1972 Kat Cutter in combo with a 1972 Panther 440. Brian Moyer won $50 bucks for the furthest traveled at 286 miles one way. Also there was Pete Kemps 1968 Polaris TX500 with a 600cc JLO flat twin. The JLO engine is a horizontal opposed engine and a rare find. They were a great bunch of people to chat with and talk about old times. Our meetings will start back up on September 3rd and I am sure the trail guys will have a lot of work ahead of them. A tornado touched down in Coudersport and we had hard rain and high wind damage in Roulette. Here at the KEYSTONE SNOWMOBILER, we are already getting calls from PSSA members about placing their sleds in the Used Sled Corral. We will have these machines listed in the October issue of the paper. Call early to get the most exposure for your sled, trailer, motorcycle, or ATV. If you are not familiar with how you can sell your equipment at the Powersports Show, here is a quick explanation: Bring your equipment and walk to the Used Sled Corral table. Fill out a 3-part carbon-less form for each item. You can save time by printing a sample form from the website (www.papowersports.com) and filling in all the info before coming to the show. Then transfer the info to the 3-part form. Pay the fee for each unit. Our friendly volunteers will then unload sleds and move trailers into the building. We do the rest! On the form you will list the selling price and indicate if you are firm or negotiable on that price. You will list a ╘bottom line╒ price if you choose negotiable. Our volunteers will not reveal the ╘bottom line╒ to a potential buyer, but will attempt to get the highest price for you. If we sell your unit, we collect the money and hold it for you. Machines or money must be claimed no later than 5 pm on Sunday, an hour after the show closes. Those machines that are not sold during the show are often sold later, as a result of someone seeing it at the show. They tell another person in the days following the show, that person calls for info, and the deal is made! For current PSSA members, the fee for each unit (sled, trailer, motorcycle, or ATV) placed in the Corral will be $25.00. Pay the fee when you arrive with your machine. For the non-members, we will not require that they join PSSA, but the fee for them will be $60.00 per unit. If they wish to join, they will save ten bucks by doing so, as the consignment fee will be $25., and the membership is $25., for a total of only $50.00. For those persons buying a unit, PSSA members can make a purchase with no extra charge, non-members will be charged a fee of $35.00. We expect most non-members to recognize the value of PSSA membership and make a decision to join (so they can save the extra ten bucks!). If a person does not wish to join, PSSA gets the additional ten dollars! One very important feature of the Used Sled Corral is the great group of volunteers that make it happen. Over the years we have learned to know a number of fine folks who help at the Corral, some help a few hours and others help many hours. Each and every one is appreciated; we can’t do it without you. For those of you who would like to join us and help with the Used Sled Corral, please contact us at the KEYSTONE SNOWMOBILER. The September issue is an exciting reminder that the new snowmobile season is almost here. We can finally expect to see more sled activities from grass drag races to trade shows. We can also shake the dust off the sled and make our wish lists for the snow. This month at the club the new board is elected, the activity calendar is refreshed, and the race season begins. We offer over 100 miles of groomed trails, members-only parking, heated bathrooms, a full kitchen, and plenty of activities. If you are interested in a membership, there are downloadable applications on the club web-site, www. lhsc.net. The Snowmobile Grass Drag Races will once again be held at our clubhouse on September 23, October 14, and November 11. This year’s race season will offer exciting points opportunities with the Chickaree Ridge Runners. There will be a variety of classes including vintage and youth. Also new this year, come and see the “mini’s” in a bracket race! Food concession is onsite. (See our ad in this issue of the Keystone Snowmobiler.) During the races, stop by the Laurel Highlands Snowmobile Club information booth. We have free stuff to give away, mind teasers for the kids, clothing to sell, and the latest updates for snowmobiling in the immediate area, like the bridge over the Pa. Turnpike. Highland Harley Davidson will be our primary sponsor for the September race. They will bring the latest toys and catalogs for you to check out. Hope to see you there. We would like to take a moment to congratulate the PSSA winners, Highland Harley Davidson for their award as the Snowmobile Dealership of the Year and the Klink Family, Joe, Margaret, Jonas, Terri, and Nicki for Family of the Year. Both were nominated by our club for their outstanding efforts towards snowmobiling. Congratulations to Mike Mumau, Operations Manager of the Laurel Hill State Park Complex, and Forbes Forest district four, Ed Callahan and Rick Supanick, in appreciation for their support of snowmobilers on the bridge project. Special recognition goes to Mosites Motorsports for untiring service and contribution to LHHT Bridge Project. We are also happy to announce that the Laurel Hill State Park will be grooming its trails this year. LAUREL HIGHLANDS SNOWMOBILE CLUB busy as usual. We are fortunate to have such a devoted group of workers. Thank you for making the club look and run great! The biggest projects at the clubhouse this year included repairs to the pavilion and garage roofs, and the work on the snow depth equipment. Linda and Junior Walker led the work on the pavilion, Bob Serfozo led the workday of the roof, and Bill Bennett led the work on the snow information station. Thank you to John Felice, George Sweigard, and Jim Wilkinson for keeping the clubhouse mowed. Thank you also to the Drag Race Committee led by Sheila Knupp and Jonas Klink for the continued updates and improvements to our drag strip. It is looking very good. We can’t wait to get the races started. Thank you to the participants of the Laurel Mountain Volunteer Group. Kerri Schott, Scott and Shelly Buckles, and Jim Wilkinson who took the Polaris Ranger with chain saws and clippers to work on the trails between the clubhouse and Seven Springs. The trails will be safer and more enjoyable for all of us because of you. Many good times were shared while the work was being done. There are many opportunities to enjoy at this sports show. The date for our annual snowmobile safety class will be Saturday, November 17, 2012. The time will be 8:30 A.M.-4:30 P.M. Our class is located in Region 3 (Westmoreland County) and will be held at the Laurel Highlands Snowmobile Clubhouse. This is a free class and food will be provided by Lori Noftz and her crew in the kitchen. We highly encourage adults to take the class with their kids and grandkids. It will be a rewarding and educational day along with the excellent food. This year’s instructors will be: Jim Tweardy- Assistant Park Manager DCNR—French Creek State Park Complex--(Jim travels over 5 hours one way to be with us), Cindy Wilkinson - Uniontown High School math teacher, Shelly Buckles - Mt. Pleasant Area elementary teacher, and Jim Wilkinson - Hempfield Area retired teacher. You can register by contacting Jim Wilkinson at [email protected] or 724-9252073. Please register early. Last year we had a record number of people sign up and had to place some on a waiting list. Please let us know right away if you had registered and cannot make it so we can add students from the waiting list. There were 58 students in last year’s class and for the first time ever the majority were adults. DCNR considers a person who reaches their 16th birthday to be an adult. Although, we only submit names to Harrisburg of students under the age of 16, all ages are welcomed! Until next time---Think safety Jim Wilkinson and Shelly Buckles P.S.—See you at the races! Keystone Snowmobiler September 2012 Page 30 TIONESTA VALLEY SNOWMOBILE CLUB CELEBRATES 35TH ANNIVERSARY WITH A WILDS AWARD!! The Tionesta Valley Snowmobile Club, Inc. (TVSC) is located in Warren, PA. Our Club celebrated our 35th anniversary when we received a “Champion of the Pennsylvania Wilds” Outstanding Leader Award during a state recreation and tourism conference held near St. Mary’s, PA on April 25, 2012. More than 160 business and community leaders from the region gathered at the Red Fern near St. Mary’s for the conference. The Pennsylvania Wilds is a 12-county tourism region located in north-central Pennsylvania; the bulk of Pennsylvania’s snowmobile trail system is located in the Wilds region. (www.pawilds. com) TVSC is an all-volunteer recreational trails and events organization working in the Allegheny National Forest region since 1977. Our volunteers have donated thousands of hours to construction and maintenance of public trails, teaching snowmobile safety courses, and holding public events. We operate on individual membership dues, donations, and occasional grants. Our trail work includes projects on public and private lands. TVSC completed key segments of the Allegheny Snowmobile Loop. One inter-modal example is the Highway 59 Bridge Enhancement Project dedicated in Sept., 2000 near Warren. With an I.S.T.E.A. grant, TVSC worked with PennDOT, Warren County and the state Dept. of Conservation and Natural Resources’ (DCNR’s) Bureau of State Parks to install side-bridges on highway bridge abutments to allow safe passage for snowmobiles, pedestrians and bicycles. TVSC formed unique partnerships to pursue trail maintenance projects on the Loop near Warren. In 2009, TVSC won a DCNR grant to purchase a trail maintenance tractor. After gathering donations of tractor attachments, TVSC used the equipment to maintain the Loop. TVSC partnered with the U.S. Forest Service and DCNR Bureau of Forestry to use left-over grooming funds from the previous winter for the work. TVSC hired Lyon Contracting of Clarendon for trail rehabilitation in 2010. In 2011, TVSC partnered with the Warren County Jail to use work- release trustees for continued trail work. In December 2011, TVSC volunteers traveled with Lyon Contracting to Lowville, NY to purchase an Arrowhead groomer-drag for use with the tractor. The Arrowhead purchase was funded by a Pennsylvania State Snowmobile Association trail grant (funded by DCNR), another grant from the Community Foundation of Warren County and private donations. TVSC sponsors DCNR-certified snowmobile safety courses. An annual all-day safety course, open to the public, is held at the Salvation Army in Warren. TVSC recruited a State Police trooper to appear at the annual course to discuss the Pennsylvania Snowmobile Law and make a PowerPoint presentation. TVSC also teaches safety courses to public. On August 24, 2007, TVSC dedicated a bronze statue of ‘The Worker’ at the Warren County Visitors Center to commemorate the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Allegheny National Forest region From 1933-42, the CCC boys built and improved many recreational trails, state parks and national parks. TVSC volunteers worked with the Visitors Center and local contractors to complete this state Dept. of Community and Economic Developmentgrant-funded project. More than 100 people attended the dedication ceremony. In August, 2008 and each year since then, TVSC holds a ‘statue reunion’ at the Vistors Center followed by an ‘Allegheny Picnic’ at a nearby park. TVSC is part of the Warren County Winterfest TVSC’s annual CCC Statue Reunion is scheduled organizing committee in addition to running for Friday, August 24, 2012. the Jim Lobdell Memorial Sled Dog Races and Walt Atwood the Winterfest web-site. The races include a 32-mile mid-distance race from Chapman State Park to the Hickory Creek Wilderness Ranch and back. These races take place on Chapman, State Game Land #29, and Allegheny National Forest. Funds are raised to support the races and other Winterfest activities through private donations. Partners include Penn Soil Resource Conservation & Development Council. Attendance at the park ranges from 6,000 to 13,500 each year. (www. warrencountywinterfest.com) TVSC volunteers are currently working with the Winterfest organizing committee to prepare for the 2013 event. As an Arctic Cat dealer, my wife and I have been snowmobiling for years, but we had never taken a guided tour, so this was a new experience for us both. Some of my customers had travelled with Don in the past and recommended his guide service. We all know that snow conditions were miserable last season. All of our favorite riding destinations suffered from a lack of snow. I was so glad we booked this trip in advance and had rideable conditions. I’m not saying trail conditions were perfect on this trip, but they were good overall. We had a couple days of ungroomed trails which I did not expect in Quebec, but we also had a few days of gorgeous trails that quickly erased my memory of the rough stuff. The trip got better each day with improved trail conditions, more breathtaking scenery, and increasingly nicer accommodations. The grand finale was the castle Le Manoir de Richelieu and it 2012 pssa snowmobile tour was truly grand. If you’ve never been, I’d highly recommend this destination. It is off the charts. Our group totaled 40 with guides. On the first morning, we all met for breakfast to discuss a few housekeeping items and to start breaking off into our riding groups. Several of the riders had been with Don previously and knew the routine. For those of us new to the group, the meeting was filled with nervous energy. Luckily everyone in the group was an experienced rider. We broke into four groups of approximately ten each. The groups all took the same trails, but at different rates of speed. Since everyone has different riding styles, it was nice to have the option to ride in the group of our choice. My wife and I chose to ride in the “D” group with our customers who had joined us on this trip. This group was led by Don himself. While this was traditionally the slowest of the four groups, we still rode at a respectable pace. This group offered the most opportunity for picture taking. Since my wife is a “scrapper”, lots of pictures were a must from this adventure. Our ride started at Four Points Sheraton near Quebec City. I must admit, I was nervous about leaving my vehicle for a week, but it was a nice hotel with secure parking. Don assured us that he had used this location previously without incident. On our first day, we rode to Les Eboulements and Auberge de Nos Aieux. We found good food at this motel with beautiful views. The trails were rough getting out of Quebec City, but not as bad as I had expected since it was the southernmost point of our trip. On our second day, we rode through the Charlevoix Region where we crossed the Saquenay River on a ferry boat. That night we stayed at Hotel Coronet at Sacre Coeur. This hotel had even better food and a secure lock up for the machines which was a welcome sight. On the third day, we rode to Cap Au Leste. This location had very nice accommodations. We stayed in a newly built cabin, located on a cliff, overlooking the Saquenay River. The views were gorgeous and I know I›m sounding like a broken record, but they had excellent food. In case you can›t tell from my description, we came home a bit heavier than when we left! We were well fed at every stop. On the fourth day, we rode to Auberge des Battures. This hotel had very nice accommodations and was overlooking the largest ice fishing village in North America, in Baie de Ha Ha. They used the tennis courts as a sled lock up which worked well. It had a billiards room which provided us a nice place to unwind from our day. On the fifth day, we rode to the castle, Le Manoir de Richelieu at Charlevoix . As mentioned previously, this was an incredible hotel. It is located on the St. Lawrence River, so the views are breathtaking. There is a casino if that tickles your fancy. Personally, I enjoyed the state of the art fitness facility and outdoor hot tubs. To say that we were pampered is an understatement. On par with the rest of the experience at this location, the food was the best of the trip. The machines were parked in the underground parking garage which was totally secure. We did not want to leave this gorgeous location, but our trip was nearing its end. On the sixth day, we rode back to the Four Points. I was greatly relieved to find all our equipment parked just as we had left it a week earlier. That evening we took a shuttle to the nearby Ice Hotel for a tour. This is really something to see. Every year this massive structure is built and it is really well done. There is a functioning bar, a church sanctuary, and dozens of elaborately decorated rooms. The ice carving in this place is awe inspiring; even the chandeliers are made of ice! We found Don and his guides to be very attentive to our needs as a group. One of the nicest things about this kind of trip is the lack of planning required for the riders. As a person who tries to plan for everything, I find taking big trips to be an almost overwhelming task sometimes. It is especially difficult when trying to plan a new destination out of country. It was nice to have the guide service take care of lodging, meals, and route planning, but the thing I appreciated most was having a chase truck haul our luggage and supplies. This made the trip so much more enjoyable. If you have never taken a guided tour, I would highly recommend the experience. It may not be for everyone, but we certainly enjoyed it.
