CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS
Shop Safely Online
During the holidays, when stores are crowded and
lines are long, many people turn to their computers
to shop online in the comfort of their own homes.
This is a popular way to shop these days, but here
are some important considerations if you are
ordering gifts online.
Suzanne, Louisa & Turkey Time kids
Family Game Time
The Turkey Time family
Storytime in November
was such a success that a
family Storytime event
has also been planned for
December. Details follow.
The Turkey Dance!
Shop from a Secure Location: Shop only
from your own computer, not one used by
others or where others may potentially see your
private information. URLs should begin with
https: - the “s” indicates a secure site - and
look for a padlock symbol in the browser
window as well.

Shop at Trusted Sites: A good choice is an
online version of a “bricks and mortar” store
familiar to you. Avoid sites with misspelled
words, particularly in the URL. Those sites are
most probably not legitimate!
Don’t Use Debit Cards Online: Thieves
could conceivably access private information
and hack into your bank account! Debit cards
are not typically protected for fraud the same
as credit cards. Use a PayPal account instead
that offers some consumer protection.
Trust Your Gut: If something seems too good
to be true, it probably is!
Friends of the Library Book Sale
The quarterly Friends book sale is
scheduled for January 15-17 in the library
Community Room. The Friends invite you to come
and browse a wide variety of hardback and
paperback books, music CDs, movies on DVD or
VHS, and audio-books. The hours for the sale are as
follows:
Thursday, January 15
5:00-7:30
Friday, January 16
10:00-4:00
Saturday, January 17
10:00-2:00
Hope to see you there!
Christmas Decorations
The library staff extends a special thank-you
to the Friends of the Library for donating
their time and talent to decorate the library for the
holidays. The Christmas trees really create a festive
atmosphere!
December 2008-January 2009
Book Discussion Group - December 16
The selected title for the December Book
Discussion Group is Sugar Cookie
Murder by Joanne Fluke, “a Hannah
Swensen holiday mystery with recipes”.
This book is from a popular series and is a perfect
choice for this time of year. The group will meet
Tuesday, December 16, in the library Community
Room. Come and join us for this fun holiday book
discussion. Everyone is welcome, and you do not
have to “join a club” to participate. Everyone is
welcome!
It’s a Mystery Book Club
It’s a Mystery Book Club will resume in
January for another three month session.
The January book has already been
selected, and the group will be
nominating titles for consideration and choosing the
remaining two titles when they get together. The
book club will meet the first Wednesday of each
month from 7:00-8:00 p.m. in the library Community
Room: January 7, February 4, and March 4.
Everyone is invited to join the group, for one or all
of the discussions. Please come!
Featured Book: Dewey: A Small-town
Library Cat Who Touched the World by
Vicki Myron and Brett Witter
The Perry library has acquired copies of
the new book about Dewey Readmore
Books, the library cat; a story about a stray kitten
who was abandoned in the Spencer, Iowa Library
book drop. Spencer Librarian Vicki Myron coauthored the book, which is a true story about
hardship and survival, small-town values, and
relationships. This book has captured the attention
of the entire country and is currently on the New
York Times Bestseller List for hardcover nonfiction.
It is also rumored to be in development for a movie
starring Meryl Streep. Stories about Iowans are
always popular locally, but this book has become a
national sensation approaching Robert Waller’s The
Bridges of Madison County, endorsed by Oprah
Winfrey back in the nineties. The book is also
available on audio CD at the library or downloadable
online through our Wilbur consortium.
