Ways to Deter Sun Damage There are 10 Top Reasons
to Have Reflexology Done
(NAPSI)-On the one
hand, exposure to the
sun’s rays induces the production of vitamin D in the
skin, promoting calcium
absorption and even protecting against the development of cancer. On your
hair, however, sunlight can
have a dulling effect.
Here are hints to help
you take advantage of the
sun’s healthful properties
while saving your hair and
skin:
• Skin Protection:
Overexposure to UV radiation can cause sunburn
and some forms of skin
cancer; however, it can
also cause direct DNA
damage and affect the immune system. Researchers
at the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill
found that melanoma cases on the scalp or neck are
twice as deadly as melanoma elsewhere on the body.
To help protect against
scalp burning and peeling,
use a scalp product with
SPF such as Nioxin Scalp
Shield Sunblock with SPF
20. This product is carefully formulated to protect
sensitive scalp skin, blocking UVA and UVB rays,
You don’t have to let the sun take the shine out of your hair if you
heed a few hints.

and it doesn’t clog pores
or leave a sticky residue.
• Hair Protection: Exposure to summer elements can take a toll on
your hair, which can lead
to color fade, dryness and
cuticle separation. Use a
clarifying shampoo regularly to eliminate buildup
of oil, chlorine and salt
water. Additionally, try
using a daily leave-in conditioner before heading to
the beach or pool. Hair is
porous like a sponge and
will soak up less water if
saturated with conditioner.
• Hair Color Protection:
UV rays can destroy mela-
nin and color molecules in
the hair, causing it to dry
out and fade…a frustrating experience for those
concerned about making
color services last. To help
protect against damage
and safeguard your investment, use styling products
that contain UV filters
for added protection and
moisture. Shine-enhancing sprays can also add
sheen by creating a glossy
surface that reflects light.

Question: I have heard
that celebrities get eyelash
extensions. What exactly
is an eyelash extension?
Answer: Eyelash extension is a technique that
started in Asia. This type
of service is referred to as
semi-permanent because
the extension if done properly should stay attached
to the natural lash until
that lash falls out. When
it does, the extension will
fall out with it.
Natural lashes provide
the anchor or weight for
ing. Do realize if you opt
for this procedure that
you’ll need to be sure the
spa you go to does a lot of
these and knows the ropes.
You’ll need education
about how to care for your
expensive lashes at home
too. All that said: the reason celebs are getting this
done is because for most
folks the results are beautiful!

the extension. A plastic tip
is attached to the edges of
tweezers and the extension
is applied with a bonding
agent. The service is pricey. For most initial applications the fee will range
from $150 to $300. Some
spas will offer a lesser fee
for maintenance, ranging
around $75 to $100. The
process is great for many
people but some will find it
unsuitable. Due to the fact
that the natural lash is the
base that carries the weight
people with very sparse or
thin lashes may not get
great results. Some clients
find that the hour long process is not too confining
and have trouble sitting
still or feel claustrophobic.
Most people can relax and
some even fall asleep. If
the cost or method of this
service is prohibitive for
you there are some other
options available for eyelash enhancement. Eyelash tinting and temporary
(false) eyelashes are two.

You Can Help Your Spleen Veterans Can Help Veterans
Fight a Hidden Enemy
Keep Your Blood Clean
Some of the organs inside of our bodies are mysteries to most of us common
folk. We know we have
them, and we know they
are important to maintain
and protect, but we aren’t
always sure what they do.
One of these important,
mysterious organs lies in
your abdomen just underneath the left rib cage. It
is your spleen. The spleen
is similar to your lymph
nodes, in that its main purpose is to act as a filter. It
filters the blood, and the
filtered material is then attacked and broken down by
this important organ so that
you can have a good supply of clean, healthy blood.
You can survive without
your spleen, but you will
be much more vulnerable
to blood-carried infection if
this organ is not functioning
properly.
A sick or swollen spleen
often has much to do with
digestive disorders, immune system weaknesses,
or circulation problems.
Sometimes, it is a symptom of these things gone

badly, and sometimes, it
is the cause of them going
bad. For this reason, one
of the best ways to protect
and stimulate your spleen to
function properly is to focus on improving digestion,
immunity, and circulation.
Many herbs commonly used
in Chinese herbal medicine
can be trusted to help you
with these issues.
To improve digestion,
you can rely on many of
nature’s historically trusted
herbals. Atractylodes Rhizome, Chaenomeles Fruit,
Galanga Rhizome, Ginger,
Licorice Root, and Magnolia Bark will help stimu-
late the digestive system,
improve overall digestion,
and balance the enzymes in
the digestive system so that
your food is digested properly. Poorly digested food
can leave the blood filled
with toxins, and this can
overburden the spleen, so
digestion is important.
For circulation and
blood pressure concerns,
some of the best Chinese
herbs include Cardamon
Fruit, Citrus Peel, Lotus
Seed, and Saussurea. These
herbs will stimulate blood
flow, reduce or regulate
blood pressure, cleanse the
blood of toxins, and help
the overall circulation.
To boost the general
immune system, one of the
best herbs is Astragalus
Root. Another great immune booster is Panax Ginseng Root. Some herbs that
are particularly beneficial to
the spleen include Dolichos
Seed, Dang Gui Root, and
Zanthoxylum Fruit.
Whether we understand
all of our internal workings
or not, it is important to remember that each piece of
us was divinely engineered
for a reason, and it is our
duty to take care of every
nook and cranny as best we
can. Protect your spleen

(NAPSI)-America’s
veterans are helping past
and present service members fight a subtle enemy
that’s devastating in the
field and at home. That enemy is stress.
Despite the best of

need has overwhelmed the
capacity of government

some people simply refuse
to admit they need help.
More needs to be done
to overcome the stigma
that’s unfortunately attached to seeking help,
which Army Secretary

Q: I hear a lot about
filing for Social Security
retirement online. How
long does it take to apply
online for benefits? And if
I file at age 62, will it tell
me when my benefits are
going to start?
A: Although it does
vary for each individual,
many people find that they
can complete their online
retirement application in as
little as 15 minutes. There
are no paper forms to sign,
and usually no additional
documents are required.
Regarding when you
will receive your first
check: you are eligible
for a benefit for the first
calendar month in which
you are age 62 for the entire month--from start to
finish.
Social Security ben-

the full month of April,

the 1st or 2nd of a month
(ie- March), you would be
considered age 62 for that
month-in this case, you’d
receive a check in April.

Social Security benefits

when his or her captain or
colonel or general won’t
do it,” he said. Our government cannot battle this
enemy alone, nor should
a troubled young veteran.
Every combat veteran has
one thing in common that’s
very relevant to a new generation of warriors: We’ve
walked in their shoes.
We need to lend a
sympathetic ear, tell them
that we were once 20something and that we
understand their fears and
emotions. What’s most
important is that we were
able to overcome our internal demons and successfully move on.
Trust is king, so ideally this needs to be done
in one-on-one meetings
and small groups away
from military installations for privacy and to
help eliminate real or perceived fears of retribution
from civilian employers
or military commanders.
We have to guide
them to seek help with
the maze of required paperwork that entitles them
to professional help and
compensation if service
connected. The faster we
do this, the better. Many
suicides occur during the
waiting period between
claims filing and adjudication. VFW will do everything it can at the national
level to speed up that
process. Our comrades in
arms need our help. The
VFW can be a vehicle for
delivering it.

Jalapeño Corn Muffins
INGREDIENTS:
Dry Ingredients
• 1 cup unbleached white flour
• 3/4 cup cornmeal
• 1/3 cup sugar, or to taste (see note)
• 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
• 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
• 1 cup fat-free yogurt
• 1 cup well-drained canned corn
• 1/2 cup pickled jalapeños, drained, seeded,
and minced, or to taste (see note)
• 3 tablespoons butter, melted
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Then: In a medium bowl,
combine all dry ingredients—the flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt, and stir to
mix thoroughly.
In a large bowl, combine the yogurt, corn, jalapeños,
and butter. Stir the dry ingredients into the wet, using
as few strokes as possible to combine.
Spray a 9-cup muffin tin or 4 mini-loaf pans (6 x 3 x 2

Families Can Thrive Financially on One Income
FOCUS ON
THE FAMILY
Dr. James Dobson
Question: Do you
have any practical suggestions for couples who
are serious about making
the effort to live on one
income? How can they
avoid bankruptcy?
DR.
DOBSON:
There may be a way to
get it done. Donna Partow, author of “Homemade Business,” has of-
fered specific advice about
starting your own business,
which could involve desktop publishing, pet grooming, sewing, consulting,
transcribing legal documents or even getting into
mail-order sales.
Choosing the right
business is the first of three
preparatory steps. Consider taking a personal-skillsand-interest inventory to
identify your abilities and
to discover what you might
enjoy doing.
The second step is to do
your homework. Begin by
using the Internet to help
you research your chosen field. Look up books,
magazines, and newspaper
articles. Talk to other people who have done what
you are considering. Join
an industry organization
and a network. Subscribe
to industry publications.
According to Mrs. Partow,
the third step is to garner as
much support as you can.
Get your children, your
spouse and your friends on
your side. Then marshal
your resources and go for
it.
Before telling me why
this alternative is impossible in light of your circumstances, let me tell you about
the Van Wingerden family
in Colorado Springs. They
have 22 children, twelve of
them adopted and ten born
to Lynn, the mother. They
own a strawberry farm and
all the children old enough
to work are involved in it.
Believe it or not, Mrs. Van
Wingerden homeschools
all the kids personally.
The family is highly
organized and structured,
with the teenagers having
specific and rotating responsibilities for routine
tasks and for the care of
the youngsters. Visiting
their home is a delight.
The Van Wingerdens prove
that many things are possible for those who set their
minds to it.
QUESTION: Just how
much opportunity do parents have to remake the personalities of their children?
Can they change characteristics that they dislike? My
son is painfully shy and I’d
like him to be strong and
assertive. Can we redesign
him?
DR. DOBSON: You
can teach new attitudes and
modify some behavioral
patterns, but you will not
be able to redesign the basic personality with which
your child was born. Some
characteristics are genetically programmed, and
they will always be there.
For example, some kids
appear to be born to lead,
and others seem to be made
to follow. And that fact can
be a cause of concern for
parents at times.
One mother told me
that her compliant, easygoing child was being picked
on and beaten up every
day in nursery school. She
urged him to defend himself, but it contradicted his
very nature to even think
about standing up to the
bullies. Finally, his frustration became so great
that he decided to heed his
mother’s advice. As they
drove to school one day he
said, “Mom, if those kids
pick on me again today ...
I’m ... I’m ... I’m going to
beat them up -- slightly!”
How does a kid beat up
someone slightly? I don’t
know, but it made perfect
sense to this compliant lad.
Like you, some parents
worry about an easygoing, passive child -- especially if he’s a boy. Followers in this society are
sometimes less respected
than aggressive leaders and may be seen as
wimpy or spineless. And
yet, the beauty of the human personality is seen in
its marvelous uniqueness
and complexity. There is
a place for the wonderful
variety of temperaments
that find expression in
children. After all, if two
people are identical in
every regard, it’s obvious
that one of them is unnecessary.
My advice to you is
to accept, appreciate and
cultivate the personality with which your little
child is born. He does not
need fit a preconceived
mold. That youngster is,
thankfully, one of a kind.

Law You Can Use...Citizens Have Right to Attend Most Public Meetings
Q: Are all meetings of
public bodies open to the
public?
A: Most of the time,
most of the meetings are
open when the members
are discussing the public’s
business, but there are exceptions. The one absolute
is that ALL votes must be
taken at open meetings.
Q: What are those exceptions?
A: The law permits

any legislative-type, or decision-making authority.
Q: What kind of public
bodies are covered by this
law?
A: The law covers just
about every decision-making body at every level of
government that you could
imagine from township
trustees to school boards
to the city council subcommittee on parades and celebrations. The body doesn’t
have to make the “final”
decision on an issue. It is
enough if the body makes
a recommendation to another public body. The law
does not apply to all meetings of groups of public officials, though. The

Q: What is the reasoning behind the exceptions

Mulan: This 1998 animated adventure is based
on a Chinese folk tale about a girl who disguises
herself as a soldier to save her feeble father from
death after an edict is given for each able man to
defend the kingdom. With the help of her ancestors and a few friends, brave Mulan manages
to fight the invading Huns and in the process
becomes a national hero. Ming-Na Wen (“ER”)
provides the voice of Mulan, with Eddie Murphy
lending support.

Williams Eatery & Gathering Place:
Serving American & Peruvian Cuisine Daily
By CAROL ARMBRUST
Staff Writer
YELLOW SPRINGS,
Ohio — Williams Eatery
& Gathering Place celebrated its first anniversary
on July 4—an anniversary
that also marks the first
year of independence for
a husband and wife who
dreamed of owning their
own restaurant after working so many years for other people.
Lawren and Diana
Williams had worked for
several corporate restaurants before deciding they
wanted to launch their
own place. They opened
Williams Eatery here last
year because, as Lawren
explains, “We believe Yellow Springs is a unique
little town, and what we
are offering is unique, and
so we thought it would fit
in.”
Diana and Lawren Williams stand inside the dining room of their restaurant, Williams Eatery & Gathering Place in Yellow Springs, Ohio.

Lawren and Diana met
while working in a restaurant in Cincinnati. This is
their first time owning a
restaurant, but they knew
exactly what they wanted
to concentrate on when
Williams Eatery, located at 101 A Corry Street in Yellow Springs,
Ohio, serves both American and Peruvian cuisine. Photo from the
restaurant’s website: <www.williamseatery.com>.
Garden Club will Meet
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio
- The Buds and Blossoms
Garden Club will hold its
annual potluck-picnic on
Tuesday, July 7, at 6:30
p.m., at Patricia Day’s
home, 3582 Heatherwood
Drive, according to President Theresa Mills.
A tour of “Pat’s Gar-
dens and Ponds” will be
featured. The annual review of the club’s constitution and discussion on the
club’s Adopt-A-Beds will
be included in the business portion of the meeting. Anyone interested in
the garden club should call
323-5865.
they opened. Lawren says
independent restaurants
“are more customer-oriented, guest-driven, and we
wanted to be like that.”
Lawren says, “We are
also unique because we
are heavily involved; from
the service we give to the
dishes we prepare—we
are very hands-on.”
Lawren, who grew up
in Fairborn, Ohio, comes
from a family of restaurant
owners; his great-grandfather and grandfather both
owned and operated restaurants in Indiana. In fact,
the American cuisine on
the menu comes from his
family’s time-tested recipes, from the restaurants
and his family’s home
kitchen, including the
Pineapple Upside-Down
Cake, which was his father Larry’s own special
recipe.
All the Peruvian dishes and drinks come from
Diana’s mother’s recipes
whose family was from
Ica, Peru, a town—where
Spanish is spoken—located on the desert coast near
the Andes, in the heart of
Peru’s Creole culture. For
a unique Peruvian taste,
several of the Peruvian
dishes are made with the
aromatic Aji (A-hee) Amarillo (yellow) peppers,
bright orange chilies from
Peru.
One of the drinks on
the menu us one called
Chicha, made with purple
corn, pineapple juice, lime
juice and flavored with
cloves-- mmm, delicious!
They were encouraged
to add Diana’s recipes to
their restaurant’s menu
by their friends’ reactions
to their Peruvian dishes.
“People are not exposed
to Peruvian dishes in this
area, but we prepared the
food for our friends and
they loved it.”
Williams Eatery has
had a great first year and
just like the couple’s
friends responded, always
asking for more, Williams Eatery has had a lot
of repeat business. The
Cincinnati Review and
Indianapolis Star both recently wrote very positive
reviews about Williams
Eatery & Gathering Place.
Part of the ambiance of
the restaurant is created by
an inviting color scheme,
the tropical plants, and the
art hanging on the walls.
The couple supports local
artists in a symbiotic relationship, giving artists a
place to display their work
and Williams Eatery its
unique atmosphere.
Besides its main dining area, Williams Eatery
has an atrium that can seat
up to 50 guests for special occasions like birth-
day parties and wedding
receptions. Their menu
includes breakfast items
and lunch and dinner with
appetizers, salads, sandwiches, entrees (Peruvian
& American), and desserts.
The restaurant is located at 101 A Corry
Street in Yellow Springs,
close to the bike path
and the downtown-shopping district. For breakfast, Williams Eatery is
open every morning at
8:30 a.m. and ends M-F
at 11:00 a.m.; Saturday at
noon; and Sunday at 1:00
p.m. Lunch and Dinner is
served M-F from 11:00
to 9:00 p.m., and Sunday
11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio
— James and Jo Ann
Bodenmiller, 1800 Providence Ave., are the fifth
winners of the Community Beautification Committee Home of the Week
Award this season, according to Chairman Marianne
L. Nave and Co-Chairman

selected by CBC members
Betty Jones and Heather
Hickle.
The Bodenmillers received their first year shield
award in 2008, after being
entered in the annual contest by CBC Judge Brian
Cason. They enjoy doing
their own yard work and
will receive a Home of the
Week plaque and numeral
award at the October 11th

at The Courtyard by Marriott - Downtown Springfield.

Beautification Contest this
summer and twelve Home
of the Week winners will
be selected from those
persons entered in the con-
test. Suggestions for the
Home of the Week may
be mailed to the committee for consideration, however only entrants already
in the contest are eligible.

not in the current contest,
the name will be held for
automatic entry in the next

Beware of Critters that
Live on Your Critters
During the hot summer
months, beware of critters
that live on your critters!
Bid those pesky fleas and
ticks adieu with a couple
of homemade remedies
along with some optional
prescribed ones.
For both dogs and
cats, brewer’s yeast and
garlic tablets may suffice.
It takes a while to get into
the pet’s system, but I’ve
heard it works.
Another homemade
remedy against a flea invasion is to put a small
amount of vinegar in the
pet’s drinking water.
For prescribed medication against fleas, the
ingredients found in Program, Frontline and Advantage work best. The ingredients are not absorbed
into the bloodstream and
are toxic only to fleas,
flea and tick natural ingredients to see what maybe
found.
Another suggestion is
to conduct a daily grooming routine for your pet
which includes a visual as
well as a hands-on inspection to detect if there are
any fleas or ticks.
In addition, it’s always
a good idea to keep grass
cut short and use a petsafe weed control on your
lawn, if possible.
Remember, never use
any flea or tick remedies
without first consulting a
veterinarian.
Got critters that live
on your critters? Then
send them packing by implementing the best flea
and tick remedies available. Always keep your
pet happy and healthy!
Always!
