Chairman’s*Update*
I!hope!everybody!has!enjoyed!the!World!Cup!
(assuming!you!like!rugby!of!course).!!
Congratulations!to!the!All!Blacks!–!what!a!fantastic!
run!through!the!quarters,!semis!and!final!with!an!
amazing!back!to!back!win!!!!
As!we!enter!the!summer!season!and!hopefully!BBQs,!
beaches!and!a!bit!of!rest,!I!guess!we!should!reflect!on!
the!winter!just!past.!!Boy,!was!the!2015!winter!cold!or!
am!I!just!getting!old!–!probably!a!bit!of!both.!!Our!event!
calendar!continues!to!be!full!and!we’ve!still!got!a!bit!on!
for!the!rest!of!the!year!!
To!that!I!need!to!express!(on!behalf!of!you!all)!my!
thanks!again!to!the!tireless!committee!members!and!
helpers!who!make!the!Centre!run!so!smoothly!and!
make!my!role!that!much!easier!–!a!very!big!thank!you!
for!your!help!on!this!list!of!events!and!activities.!!I!
won’t!list!all!of!them!–!as!they!will!be!mentioned!
elsewhere!in!the!newsletter.!!!
I!guess!the!point!is!that!June!through!to!September!is!
our!busiest!time!of!the!year!with!sports!events,!cultural!
events,!interspersed!with!catering!undertakings!and!
our!business!as!usual!activities!(now!stretching!into!
October).!!Our!relationships!with!the!Wellington!
Chinese!Community!are!important!and!we!engage!with!
all!the!groups!frequently.!!
make!it!all!happen.!!This!was!especially!noticeable!
when!a!key!person!was!unavailable!through!
sickness.!!On!behalf!of!the!Centre!and!personally,!I!
express!our!warmest!regards!and!best!wishes!to!
Rita!and!Robert!Dong!and!the!kids,!as!Rita!continues!
towards!full!recovery.!!!
We!were!very!pleased!with!the!success!of!the!oneV
off!event!hosting!the!Taipei!Youth!Ambassadors!and!
TECO!in!September.!!They!approached!us!to!have!
the!exchange!where!our!groups!performed!
followed!by!the!Taipei!Youth.!!I!thought!they!were!
pretty!slick!performances!and!similarly!the!catering!
team’s!performance!was!pretty!slick,!despite!a!
couple!of!newbie!chefs.!!(How!many!guys!does!it!
take!to!light!a!gas!ring?)!
If!you!have!been!up!at!the!Centre!recently!you!will!
have!noticed!we!have!replaced!the!old!carpet!with!
new!–!thanks!to!Nigel!Dong!for!organising.!!
Secondly,!we!are!on!the!lookout!for!a!new!cleaner,!
if!you!know!of!somebody!who!might!be!interested!–!

From!a!sports!perspective!–!an!all!of!clubs!initiative!has! !
been!in!place!for!the!past!few!years!to!manage!
eligibility!i.e.!a!person!has!to!prove!their!Chinese!
descent!in!order!to!play!in!our!Chinese!sports!
tournaments.!!Ironically,!around!August!Labour!was!
banging!on!about!Auckland!house!prices!escalating!due!
to!Chinese!buyers.!!They!used!a!sale!list!and!based!on!
the!surname!determined!if!the!house!purchasers!were!
of!Chinese!ethnicity.!!!
I!think!I!might!check!with!Andrew!Little!and!see!if!
Labour!can!improve!our!eligibility!process.!

Fundraising*
The!catering/fundraising!group!has!been!very!busy!
this!year!with!a!few!more!functions!on!than!the!
usual.!!
• We!started!the!
season!off!with!
Dim!sum!
making/selling!in!
May!where!we!
presold!and!made!
over!3000!dim!
sum.!!
• The!Queens!birthday!basketball!tournament!
canteen!was!very!successful,!we!actually!sold!
out!of!food!by!Monday!afternoon!!!
• Then!the!annual!NZCA!conference!over!the!
weekend!of!20V21!June!is!always!a!busy!time!
with!lots!of!helpers!V!thank!you!!The!delegates!
were!again!very!pleased!with!the!food!and!
catering!and!are!keen!to!return!for!another!
dose!next!year.!!
• As!the!first!dim!sum!fundraiser!sold!out!so!
quickly!we!decided!to!run!a!second!one,!this!
time!making!over!5000!to!sell!!!Another!band!of!
wonderful!helpers!whipped!up!the!dim!sum!in!
record!time,!special!thanks!to!the!Line!dancers,!
YYY!parents,!and!basketball!and!cultural!
parents!and!ballroomers!that!came!and!helped!
out.!!
• Providing!afternoon!tea!at!the!Goodwill!Games!
in!August!for!all!the!hungry!players!and!
supporters!went!down!well.!
• Following!on!we!hosted!and!catered!an!
invitation!event!with!TECO!–!Taiwan!
Economic!and!Cultural!Office!with!25!
Taiwanese!dancers!coming!over!to!
perform.!!We!also!had!our!very!own!
dragon!and!lion!dance!troupe,!along!with!
two!of!our!gorgeous!groups!of!dancing!
girls!participate.!!Over!300!people!attended!
the!afternoon,!and!the!catering!group!put!
!

on!a!fabulous!spread!to!make!sure!
everyone!was!well!fed.!!
• We!filled!17!tables!for!The!Moon!Festival!
dinner!in!September,!and!had!sales!of!
$700!in!raffles!!V!thank!you!for!all!the!
contributions!to!the!fabulous!prizes!!!
• Our!final!event!was!just!held!in!the!
weekend!–!annual!Ballroom!Dance,!
hosted!by!the!WCSCC!ballroom!dance!
group!and!catered!again!by!us.!!The!gym!
was!transformed!into!a!fairy!wonderland!
with!so!many!beautiful!fairy!lights!and!a!
band!playing!music!so!they!could!all!
dance!the!night!away.!The!catering!
group!fed!140!hungry!mouths!for!a!lavish!
supper!that!kept!them!well!nourished!to!
the!end!of!the!evening.!!

We!have!had!a!busy!and!successful!basketball!
season!with!a!very!good!number!of!kids!continuing!

It!was!our!turn!to!travel!to!the!Kapiti!coast!and!we!
had!a!full!bus!with!9!teams!from!the!Centre!
participating.!!This!included!2!Tini,!2!Mini,!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2!Intermediates,!MU18!A!&!B!and!WU18.!!We!had!a!
very!successful!exchange!winning!all!of!our!games!
except!one.!!Whilst!being!smaller!in!most!cases!we!
continued!to!show!that!skill!and!speed!make!up!for!
size.!

At!the!Central!U13!Regional!tournament,!Ryan’s!team!played!7!games,!
winning!3!and!losing!4,!coming!5th!overall.!!The!tournament!was!held!in!
Napier!from!Wed!7!to!Sat!10!October.!They!played!teams!from!Levin!(who!
came!1st),!Palmerston!North!(2!teams),!Hawkes!Bay,!New!Plymouth,!
Taranaki,!and!Gisborne.!The!games!were!very!close!with!an!overall!pointsV

Twenty!two!kids!and!four!hardy!
parents!braved!an!August!
Saturday!evening!(Bledisloe!Cup!
night!no!less!)!for!the!2015!kids!
sleepover!at!the!Centre.!
The!lounge!was!a!scene!of!colour!
and!comfort!as!all!the!sleeping!bags,!
beds!and!pillows!rolled!out!to!fill!the!
room.!!Heating!wasn’t!required!with!
so!many!people!in!there!!!The!kids!had!
a!great!time!playing!in!the!hall!before!
their!dinner!of!Chinese!fare!and!fish!
and!chips.!!
evening!movie.!!Order!was!restored!
when!the!real!movies!were!shown.!!
Popcorn!and!iceVblocks!were!served!and!
quite!a!bit!later!everyone!got!to!bed.!!
The!parents!were!very!impressed!
when!some!children!decided!straight!
after!dinner!to!get!into!their!pyjamas.!!
From!there!a!steady!stream!of!kids!
filed!through!the!kitchen!from!the!hall!
to!the!bathroom!to!get!ready!for!bed!

unforeseen!event!gave!the!adults!

Under!18!Men:!
This!year’s!annual!Dragons!tournament!was!a!
successful!one!for!us!U18!Men.!With!some!
players!unavailable!for!the!entirety!of!the!
weekend,!we!went!into!the!first!day!
undermanned.!!
A!good!win!against!ACM!A!was!followed!by!a!
big!defeat!by!a!strong!Dragons!A!side.!Placing!
second!in!our!pool!meant!we!played!the!same!
ACM!side!in!the!semis;!the!winner!would!
advance!to!play!the!already!qualified!Dragons!
team.!A!20Vpoint!victory!in!Sunday’s!semi!final!
secured!us!a!spot!in!the!finals!–!this!time,!we!
would!play!them!with!a!full!squad.!In!front!of!a!
big!crowd!on!Walter!Nash!Stadium’s!centre!
court,!the!game!was!as!close!as!it!could!be.!!
A!hard!fought!fourth!quarter!was!nearly!offset!
by!some!dodgy!free!throw!shooting,!but!it!was!
enough!to!take!home!the!trophy.!With!a!young!
team!and!many!boys!returning!next!year,!the!
stage!is!set!to!defend!our!crown!come!2016.!

This!year!the!women's!u18!team!was!
very!small,!with!only!4!members!we!
often!struggled!to!form!a!team!(Tara,!
Jacqui,!Brittany!and!Jordy).!When!we!
went!up!to!Kapiti!there!were!only!3!
official!u18!women!members!so!we!
brought!up!two!intermediate!players,!
Kelly!and!Christina,!and!two!friends!to!
play!with!us!!(Nicole!and!
Flora).!!Luckily!these!girls!were!
extremely!talented!and!we!came!out!
with!a!convincing!win!against!the!
Kapiti!girls.!!
We!also!played!in!the!midweek!league!
on!Thursday!nights!along!with!some!
senior!players.!It!was!very!fun!and!
social!and!a!good!way!to!meet!new!
friends.!We!were!quite!successful!as!
we!came!fourth.!!

The!Centre’s!very!own!Zach!Young!had!a!chat!with!Peter!Gosnell!during!his!offVseason!from!
College!basketball!in!the!States!and!talked!about!his!journey!to!playing!in!the!big!leagues!
Zach,*I*know*you*took*an*unusual*route*
to*eventually*playing*NCAA*division*1*
basketball*and*being*a*starting*point*
guard*as*a*freshman.*Can*you*tell*the*
players*at*home*a*little*bit*about*your*
journey,*and*what*sort*of*decisions*you*
had*to*make*to*get*to*where*you*are?!
I!graduated!Wellington!College!in!2011!and!
had!always!dreamed!of!playing!college!
basketball!in!the!States.!The!following!
year!the!chance!to!play!for!the!Junior!Tall!
Blacks!(JTB’S)!team!arose!and!I!chose!to!
keep!my!college!dreams!on!hold!as!I!took!
advantage!of!the!opportunity!presented!
to!me.!After!having!the!privilege!to!play!in!
both!Germany!and!China!with!the!JTB’s,!
and!also!in!my!hometown!of!Wellington!
against!Australia!and!NBA!rookie!Dante!
Exum!the!search!for!a!college!team!
begun.!
!
Throughout!2013!I!sent!countless!emails!
and!film!to!numerous!Colleges!at!every!
level!and!only!then!found!out!how!hard!
the!journey!was!going!to!be.!August!was!
coming!up!fast!and!the!realization!that!
college!basketball!may!not!be!possible!for!
me!was!daunting!until!Mike!Moreau!from!
Impact!Academy!rolled!into!town.!After!
the!weekend!camp!I!discussed!my!
situation!with!Coach!Mike!and!he!invited!
me!to!enroll!in!their!Las!Vegas!Academy!
from!September!2013!to!May!2014.!!
After!8!months!of!grinding!the!dream!of!
playing!college!basketball!was!becoming!a!
reality.!After!I!few!visits!and!offers!I!made!
the!decision!to!play!Division!1!basketball!at!
Nicholls!State!University.!!
My!three!year!journey!to!get!to!where!I!am!
now!included!many!setbacks!but!I!kept!
striving!for!what!I!wanted!until!I!made!it!
happen.!!
There!were!many!decisions!I!had!to!make!
on!a!dayVtoVday!basis!but!my!motivation!
kept!me!in!the!right!direction.!!
Only!with!the!support!from!my!family!and!
coaches!has!my!dream!come!true!and!for!
that!I!am!forever!grateful.!

What*was*the*highlight*for*you*personally*
from*your*first*year*of*playing*at*college?!
My!highlight!for!me!personally!was!getting!
my!first!start.!Being!a!Freshman!I!had!to!
fight!for!everything!and!had!to!continuously!
prove!myself!to!my!teammates,!my!coaches!
and!most!of!all!myself.!At!the!start!of!the!
season!I!was!one!of!the!last!off!the!bench!
and!was!barely!seeing!the!court.!Although!
discouraged!I!continued!to!work!hard.!A!
few!games!into!conference!the!coach!
wasn’t!getting!what!he!wanted!out!of!the!
Point!Guards!ahead!of!me.!He!made!the!
decision!to!give!me!the!chance!I!so!
desperately!wanted.!I!was!thrown!into!the!
starting!line!up!in!practice!and!although!I!
hadn’t!seen!too!much!action,!staying!
mentally!in!check!and!always!observing!
gave!me!the!ability!do!what!was!asked!of!
me.!Finally!my!time!came!and!after!the!
National!Anthem!my!name!was!called,!“6ft!
freshman!from!Wellington!New!Zealand,!
number!10!Zaaaaaacchhhh!
Yoooooounnngggg”.!Running!down!the!
middle!of!my!teammates!for!the!first!time!
was!the!highlight!of!my!freshman!year.!
!
It*has*been*said**“attitude*determines*your*
altitude”.*What*sort*of*
attitude*does*a*Kiwi*
prospect*have*to*have*if*
they*want*to*be*
successful*in*the*USA?!
One!of!the!main!attitudes!any!aspiring!
college!athlete!needs!is!the!mindset!to!
work!your!hardest!regardless!of!what!is!
happening!around!you.!Holding!yourself!
accountable!for!your!actions!and!your!
training!is!most!important.!Even!if!no!one!is!
there!to!see!you!train!only!you!need!to!
know!the!work!you!put!in.!Things!may!not!
be!going!to!plan!but!you!can!only!control!
what!you!have!control!of,!and!as!long!as!
hard!work!is!a!constant!you!will!have!no!
regrets!and!success!is!more!likely!to!come!
your!way.!
If*you*could*give*your*15*year*old*self*some*
advice*and*encouragement*what*would*
you*say?!
The!best!advice!I!could!give!myself!at!15!
would!be!to!work!hard!regardless!of!
anyone!or!anything!else.!Don’t!get!
discouraged!when!things!don’t!go!your!
way,!setbacks!are!inevitable!but!depending!
on!how!you!go!about!it!determines!your!
character!and!who!you!are.!Be!confident!in!
everything!you!do!and!don’t!let!negativity!

Cantonese*Class*
Cantonese!classes!are!held!on!Sundays!over!all!4!
terms!during!the!course!of!the!year.!!!Currently!
classes!are!held!as!2!sessions!V!one!class!for!under!
8!years!and!another!for!8!years!and!over.!!
!
2015!finds!Cantonese!Classes!in!good!health.!
Classes!are!well!attended!with!around!8!V!10!
students!attending!each!class.!Classes!are!very!
lively!V!and!noisy.!It!is!a!Cantonese!language!class!
after!all!!!!!

Currently!most!of!the!students!are!graduates!
from!Yau!Yih!Yun!preschool.!!These!language!
classes!run!by!the!Centre!are!unique!in!teaching!
Cantonese!and!we!see!an!opportunity!to!market!
these!classes!(both!for!children!and!adults)!
to!the!greater!Wellington!community.!How!this!
can!be!achieved!effectively!needs!further!
investigation.!
Additionally!some!of!the!adult!members!of!the!
Centre!have!also!expressed!an!interest!in!learning!/!
refreshing!their!Cantonese.!Interested!members!
should!contact!me!and!if!there!is!sufficient!interest!
additional!classes!could!be!scheduled.!

Classes!focus!on!the!development!of!basic!
conversational!and!written!skills!in!an!
interactive!and!fun!environment.!Subject!matter!
is!topical!to!the!students!with!discussions!on!
Chinese!festivals;!customs!and!food!among!the!
many!topics!discussed.!

Over!the!last!few!months!YYY!has!focused!on!running!
both!Wednesday!and!Saturday!classes!including!term!
trips!and!social!activities.!Highlights!include!a!zoo!trip!
by!the!Wednesday!class,!a!combined!performance!with!
the!Cantonese!class!for!the!Taiwan!Economic!and!
Cultural!Office,!and!our!annual!Moon!Festival!potluck!
dinner!and!lanterns!upstairs!in!the!WCSCC!hall.!!

We!have!also!run!a!few!very!successful!fundVraising!
activities.!We!held!a!sold!out!movie!fundraiser!for!'A!
Royal!Night!Out',!organised!a!raffle,!and!held!a!Chinese!
cooking!demo!(recipe!attached).!Thanks!to!all!those!
families!who!have!taken!time!out!to!organise!these!
activities.!

We!have!also!helped!out!at!the!WCSCC!dim!sim!making!
fundraiser,!setting!up!for!the!yearly!NZCA!confeerence,!
and!participated!in!the!WCSCC!annual!Moon!Festival!

The!WCSCC!Ballroom!dance!
group!has!continued!to!grow!
this!year,!and!has!participated!in!
a!number!of!dance!events!which!
have!now!become!more!and!
more!popular!and!provide!many!
opportunities!for!us!to!socialize!
and!improve!our!ballroom!
dances!which!we!have!learnt!
over!the!year.!
