elcome to Visual Art Exchange’s 27th Annual Auction and Gala,
For the Love of Art. We hope you enjoy the evening and have a
chance to see what our artists have been creating in their studios.
This has been an amazing year for VAE and for the gala. We are again
setting records for number of sponsorship and art donations. Thank you!
We would like to thank the event committee, our board of directors, our
advisory council, our dedicated volunteers and our staff. They have done so much
for VAE! We would also like to thank the sponsors who help VAE to foster the
advancement of and provide opportunities for all visual artists.
We would like to thank our honorary chairs, Trish & John Healy and
Scott & Lisa Ralls, for their support and their significant contributions to the arts
in Raleigh.
This annual auction and gala is our major fundraiser. Your support will reach
so many people including our members, the teacher, the student, the emerging artist;
the at-risk youth in the community who participates in our education programs;
the company who welcomes new employees to the area; an artist new to the
community. Thank you for appreciating the arts and understanding the value
art brings to our lives.
We hope to see you at next year’s event and hope you bring home artwork
to add to your collection!
Enjoy!

ABOUT THE JURY
Linda Johnson Dougherty is chief curator and curator of contemporary art at
the North Carolina Museum of Art, where she is currently organizing exhibitions
of contemporary art and developing artists’ projects for the Museum Park. She
codirected the public art program for the state of North Carolina for several years,
and prior to that she was a curator at the Phillips Collection, a research associate at
the National Gallery of Art, and a research assistant at the National Museum of
American Art in Washington, D.C.
As an independent curator and critic based in Chapel Hill, she contributed
reviews and articles on contemporary art to numerous national art publications. She
has also written exhibition catalogues and guest-curated exhibitions for museums
and contemporary art centers in North Carolina and throughout the United States.
She has a BA in art history from Wesleyan University and an MA in art history
from Williams College.
Adam Cave, owner of Adam Cave fine art, has degrees in both Fine Art and Art
History from Connecticut College. He began his art career in Santa Fe, New
Mexico in 1992 and spent over ten years as the director of Gallery C in Raleigh.
He has served on the Town of Cary Public Art Advisory Board as well as lectured
for The Visual Art Exchange and The Fine Arts League of Cary. Most recently
Adam was asked to be a juror for Artspace in Raleigh and, in 2010, he served for
the third year in a row as art chair for the Alliance of Aids Services — Carolinas
“Works of Heart” auction, the largest art auction and fundraiser in the Triangle.
Roger Manley, Director of the Gregg Museum of Art & Design at North
Carolina State University, has worked as a curator with more than forty institutions,
including the Asheville Art Museum, the Atlantic Center for the Arts, the Center
on Contemporary Art/Seattle, the Collection de l’Art Brut in Switzerland, the
Columbia Museums of Art & Science, Duke University, Green Hill Center for
NC Art, the Haggerty Museum of Art, the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art,
the Illinois State Museum, Intuit/Chicago, the Jargon Society, the McKissick
Museum of the University of South Carolina, the NC Museum of Art, the
Sawtooth Center for Visual Design, and the Southeastern Center for Contemporary
Art. Manley curated the inaugural exhibition for the opening of the American
Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore.
As an artist (photographer, filmmaker, writer), Manley has been a fellow of the
Headlands Center for the Arts in California, the Fondation d’Art de La Napoule in
France, and Mishkenot Sha’ananim in Israel, as well as a Visiting Artist with the
NC Arts Council’s community college programs. He is a recipient of both the
NEA Artists Fellowship and the NEH Scholars Fellowship, and of grants from
the Watson Foundation, the NC Arts Council, the Laurie Foundation, the
Bunnen Foundation, and the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation. His feature documentary film Mana—beyond belief premiered at Lincoln Center in New York in 2005
and has won awards at several international film festivals. The NC Independent
newspaper awarded Manley its Community Arts “Indy” Award for service to the
arts in the Triangle.
SILENT AUCTION
RULES
1. The Silent Auction will begin at 6:00 p.m. and closes in three phases. The
white section will close at 7:45 p.m., the yellow section will close at 8:00 p.m.
and the red section will close at 8:15 p.m.
2. Each item will have a bid sheet. Establish your bid by writing your bidder
number, name and bid amount in $10 increments on the bid sheet. Please print
legibly. Illegible bids or bids that are not in $10 increments will be voided.
3. The volunteers will strike the last bid starting at closing time, and the last bid
written before the bid card is struck will be the winning bid.
4. All items will be sold to the highest bidders in excess of the minimum bid
noted on the bid sheet unless a buy it now guaranteed bid has been performed.
“BUY IT NOW” GUARANTEED BIDDING
1. All items in the Silent Auction have been designated for the GUARANTEED
BID program, meaning one can “BUY IT NOW” rather than bidding on the
item. See the bid ticket for the GUARANTEED BID price.
2. Any bidder may purchase an item for the GUARANTEED BID price at any time.
As long as the bid amount has not surpassed the GUARANTEED BID price.
3. To signify your decision to purchase, fill out the GUARANTEED BID section
of the bid card and locate the nearest volunteer.
4. All artwork remains in its display position until the Silent Auction is closed
and bids are processed. Buyers must check-out at registration before retrieving
their purchased art.
