The 29th Annual Frederick T. West Lectureship was held on Friday,
March 13 at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco in conjunction with
the 116th Annual Alumni Meeting. Dr. Peter Sinclair was the featured
speaker and his all-day lecture, “Orthodontic Update: A Discussion
of Some Contemporary Clinical and Scientific Issues and Ideas in
Orthodontics” was well attended and extremely informative. His
lecture discussed in great detail the challenges for the science of
orthodontics; facts and fallacies of early treatment; predicting and
preventing root resorption; and retention.
Dr. Peter Sinclair speaks to a full room at the Fred West Lectureship.

This year the 115th Annual Session of the AAO was held in San Francisco at the Moscone Convention
Center. Drs. Jennifer Yau ’15 and Matthew Joosse ’16 competed in the College Bowl during the meeting.
Dr. Jay Whitley led two point/counterpoint debates by residents from UCSF, University of the Pacific,
Loma Linda University, and UCLA. The topics debated were (1) should asymptomatic third molars be
removed prophylactically and (2) is closed or open eruption more ideal for impacted canines. Our
team’s hard work paid off as they were definitely the most prepared, confident and polished group of
the session and the content of their presentation was superior to the other groups. They were excellent
representatives of our department and we are so proud of them.

DEPARTMENT CHAIR’S REPORT
By Dr. Robert Boyd
Dear Friends,
As most of you know or have heard by now, Dean Pat Ferrillo has
resigned. Dean Ferrillo spoke with a us at a town hall meeting recently and explained that he has been thinking of giving up his
Deanship for some time to pursue other professional activities such
as consulting with new dental schools to help them get started or
implementing changes to improve their school. He was a Dean for
almost 30 years at three different dental schools so he has a lot of
experience to draw upon.
He is on a one-year sabbatical leave and is moving back to Chicago. One of Dr.
Ferrillo’s major accomplishments was to build a new state-of-the-art dental school.
He was our Dean for nine years and was a positive supporter of our department’s
journey to continue moving forward to be the best we can be.
We certainly had a great AAO meeting this year in San Francisco. ABO Director and
Professor Steve Dugoni along with our Program Chair Dr. Heesoo Oh gave a wonderful presentation on the effectiveness and benefits to the patient of well-timed
early ortho-dontic treatment. It was supposed to be a debate with two English
professors showing their results with early treatment, but to most of the attendees
and others I spoke to, it was a clear win for Steve and Heesoo to the hometown
fans! The difference between the two groups positions was shown so effectively
with excellent clinical documentation of patients’ treatment backed up by comprehensive longitudinal data from the large pool of data that we have been collecting
for many years at the Dugoni School.
The other big event at the Dugoni School was the alumni reception on Saturday
night at the AAO meeting. In this issue you will see photos of this well attended
function. The food was great and the wine was good even by California’s standards. I believe there were more than 300 guests attending, including many of our
alumni, faculty, residents and friends from around the world. I had the pleasure
of introducing Dean Emeritus Arthur A. Dugoni who gave a reflective presentation
about how we got to this point with our already widely recognized, new state-ofthe-art dental school.
We have also recently received a large gift from Align Technology of $1.1 million
dollars over a four-year period to go towards our Building Fund Fundraising Campaign
and to recognize our school’s efforts over the last 17 years to clinically test and
help improve Invisalign clinical efficacy.
What a year we have had!

PROGRAM DIRECTOR’S REPORT
By Dr. Heesoo Oh, Class of 2005
It has been an exciting year for our department and school since we
moved to our new home at 155 Fifth Street. The AAO meeting was
held in May at the Moscone Convention Center and all of our residents and staff enjoyed attending the entire conference. In addition,
our school was well represented by both faculty and residents. Dr.
Steven Dugoni and I participated in the point/ counterpoint debate
on early treatment, which drew much attention from the orthodontic
community.
In addition, our residents competed in the College Bowl debate program, which focused on the topic
of prophylactic third molar extractions. Dr. Jennifer Yau (Class of 2015) and Dr. Matt Joosse (Class
of 2016) convincingly argued their viewpoints in their debate against the UCSF residents. We are very
proud of their accomplishment!
During the AAO, many past graduates attended the
alumni reception and had the opportunity to tour
the new school. We also hosted an open-house event
that enabled guests and faculty members from other
schools to visit our new facilities. Everyone was impressed by our state-of –the art dental school.
Taking advantage of having the AAO in San Francisco, we invited prominent guest lecturers from all
around the world to speak to our residents. Dr. Jose
Nelson Mucha, Professor and Chair of the Orthodontic department at UFF in Brazil, gave his lecture on “Top Ten Tips for Excel-lence in Orthodontic Finishing;” Dr. Hyeon-sik Hwang, professor and
chair of the Orthodontic department in Chonnam Drs. Joosse and Yau take their turn at the dais.
National University in Korea, presented “Effective
Use of Miniscrew Implant;” and Dr. Lysle Johnston, an esteemed scholar and educator in orthodontics, presented his lifetime research on many controversial subjects in clinical orthodontics and discussed Dr. Edward Angle’s innovative life.
There have also been changes in our clinical faculty team.
I am sad to report that after many years of committed service, our Thursday night clinic faculty has
decided that they are unable to continue their clinical instruction due to significant diffi-culties in commuting to the school’s new campus. However, they will continue to teach residents through seminars
and hands-on exercises with orthodontic appliances. I would like to express my sincere respect for and
appreciation to Drs. Robert Griffin, Garry Gast, Timothy Irish and Carol Bongiovanni for their dedication.
Since Thursday night clinic would not be the same without them, the Department has decided to extend
clinic hours to 6:00 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays in lieu of Thursday night clinic.
On the other hand, we have made some valuable additions to our clinical staff.

Farewell party for Drs. Carol Bongiovanni,
Robert Griffin, Garry Gast and Timothy Irish.
Dr. Paul Kasrovi
Dr. William Cole
Dr. Paul Kasrovi (UCSF, ’95) has joined our Wednesday afternoon clinic. He has successful practices in
Berkeley and is actively involved in many professional organizations where he holds leadership positions,
such as the Angle Society, PCSO (secretary/treasurer), and AAO (annual session committee member).
He is a diplomate of the ABO. Dr. Kasrovi brings a lot of energy and serves as a great role model for our
residents by giving back to our specialty as both an educator and leader.
Dr. William Cole (UCSF, ’84) is another great addition to our clinic. He practiced for a while with Drs.
Donald Poulton and Sheldon Baumrind before moving back east for a long and successful career in private practice. Dr. Cole is a diplomate of the ABO and has served as a clinical examiner since 2009. He
was an officer of the Edward Angle Society and has been a very active member. He also served as parttime faculty at both Harvard University and the New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry (recently
renamed by Rutgers University) until moving to San Francisco in 2014. His unique background as an
educator at two different schools on the East Coast will bring a different perspective to our residents’
orthodontic education.
The new Wednesday afternoon clinic faculty team, which includes Drs. Rouleau, Kasrovi, Walters and
Cole, will hold treatment-planning seminars twice a month.
Now, for some updates on our residents.
Our graduating residents, the Class of 2015, will have their last and most rigorous and demanding
quarter before the graduation. They will be busy preparing for their 10-year case presentations, ABO
mock exams, finished case displays, research presentations and masters theses, as well as finishing
cases for their ABO-Initial Certification Examination (ICE). Seven residents have already registered for
the 2016 February exam. The ABO-ICE is becoming a standard for our graduating residents, rather than
an exception. They are also working on their case reports for our second issue of the Journal of Pacific
Orthodontics, which will be available at the Graduation symposium.
The Class of 2016 has successfully advanced to their second year of residency. They demonstrated
exceptionally strong aca¬demic and clinical knowledge during their comprehensive oral examinations.
They are moving forward to more clinically focused second-year curriculum and will be devoting more
time to their research projects.
Finally, I would like to welcome our Class of 2017. Enjoy the New Class Introduction section!

Like my predecessor, Editor Emeritus Richard Remmel Rutter, I have a deep appreciation of history.
As our graduate program approaches its 45th year of training residents to become “safe beginners”, I
thought it would be nostalgic for those of us who have been around long enough to remember or know
about the beginnings of our program and enlightening for the newer generation of orthodontists to read
this article from a 1981 issue of the dental school’s alumni magazine, Contact Point.
The article describes the early days of the orthodontic department and eventual graduate program as well
as the key figures involved. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did when I was a first year dental student.

SECOND-YEAR RESIDENTS’ REPORT
By Dr. Laura Mancini, Class of 2015
What a journey it has been. It feels like just yesterday that we were transitioning from the old school’s location in Pacific Heights to the current building in SOMA. We cannot believe that we have less than three
months of our residency remaining. It has been a busy few months and the final stretch will be even busier!
Over the past few months, we dedicated much of our time to preparation for the ABO written examination, which was held in April. Dr. Oh’s ABO prep course must have prepared us well as all of us successfully passed the exam. Many of us have currently signed up to take the clinical component next February,
thanks to the generous support of the program, and we are working hard to complete our six cases.
Our Canadian residents, Dr. Vanessa Chong and Dr. Laura Mancini, along with Dr. Nicholas Thorpe (Class
of 2014) also successfully passed Component I of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada Orthodontics
Specialty Examination in March and completed Component II of the exam in Toronto this June.
This past May, the AAO conference took place in our very own San Francisco, organized in part by our new
faculty Dr. Paul Kasrovi. While attending the lectures, UOP residents, staff, and faculty showed their support for Drs. Heesoo Oh and Steven Dugoni who debated Early Class II Treatment with Drs. O’Brien and
Sandler. While many of those attending were exposed to and learned about the early treatment protocol
taught at UOP, certainly all will remember the final resonating comment by Dr. Arthur Dugoni stating that
40% of the phase I patients did not need phase II treatment. In addition, representing UOP in the College
Bowl Debate about asymptomatic third molars, were first-year resident Dr. Matt Joosse and second-year
resident Dr. Jennifer Yau, up against some UCSF residents. Our dynamic duo did not disappoint!
May started off with the Bay Area Brain Tumor walk for which our orthodontics department held multiple
bake sales and raised a whopping $2896!

Another May celebration included the Kuwait Cultural Luncheon hosted by Dr. Lateefa Al-Kharafi and
her husband Dr. Fawaz Al-Zoubi. While hearing about
Kuwait’s fascinating history, we enjoyed some delicious specialty dishes from the region.
The Thursday evening clinic has been changed to extended Tuesday and Thursday afternoon clinics. We
are sad to say goodbye to the Thursday evening faculty who have been an integral part of the education
experience here.
While we have been working hard to complete our Masters research projects, we have also been preparing
and learning more about practice management. Many have attended practice visits including the orthodontic offices of Dr. Marta Baird, Dr. Bert Rouleau, Dr. Thomas Marcel, Dr. Cameron Mashouf, and more.
Several of us also attended the Alumni/Graduate Banquet for an extravagant evening and celebration at
the Ritz-Carlton hotel.

SECOND YEAR RESIDENTS’ REPORT
(CONT’D)
Though we recently participated in the Commencement Ceremony for dental students at the Masonic
Auditorium, we eagerly await the Graduation Symposium coming up on September 18th. We especially
look forward to seeing the video that the first years are preparing in our honor — though we doubt it could
surpass the impressive video made by last year’s first years!
So what’s next for our class following graduation?
Dr. Lateefa Al-Kharafi plans on returning to Kuwait where she will work for the Ministry of Health. (Though
you can expect to see her for a few additional months finishing up her ABO patients).
Dr. Vanessa Chong plans to return to Toronto, Canada where she hopes to associate in private practice.
Dr. Daniel Frey is moving back to Philadelphia. He will be joining forces with his brother (Dr. Scott Frey,
UOP dental graduate of 2009) and father (Dr. Gregg Frey) at their family’s orthodontic practice.
Though staying in California, Dr. Cheryl Guerrero anticipates a move to the San Diego area where she will
be looking to associate.
Dr. Justin Maccaro will be moving back to Long Island, NY to start a joint Orthodontic/Pediatric practice
with his father, Henry Maccaro within his existing pediatric dental practice of more than 35 years.
Dr. Laura Mancini will be beginning a year-long Orthodontic Craniofacial Fellowship at NYU’s Langone
Medical Center in NYC.
Dr. Jesse Punch and Dr. Jennifer Yau both plan to remain around the Bay Area and hope to associate in
private practice.

FIRST YEAR RESIDENTS’ REPORT
By Dr. Jesse Punch, Class of 2015
We have done much in the last six months, and time sure flies! Now that we are in the second year of our
residency, we are beginning to get more autonomy in the clinic. We are able to accurately diagnose patient
problems and are really starting to get a grasp of what the likely treatment plans will be! Clinic is getting
busy as our senior siblings are graduating and we are beginning to treat their transfer cases. Additionally,
the new first-year class has been doing their orientation and typodont course, and are very close to joining
us in the clinic themselves.
We had an opportunity to visit Dr. Bob Fry’s office in Olathe, KS. Here, we do many outdoor activities including shooting guns, riding ziplines and driving ATVs. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your
outlook) it had just freshly rained when we arrived, and the fields we were driving the ATVs on were covered
in mud. Driving these powerful machines around in the mud certainly got us messy! Hours later, we were
tired and soaking wet from the mud, but we certainly had great bonding opportunities. It wasn’t all fun and
games, however, as we also had an excellent practice management course series from Dr. Fry.
The Annual Session of the AAO was in San Francisco this year at the Moscone Center, which happens to
be about a block from the entrance to our dental school. We had a great time attending the UOP alumni
event in conjunction with the Annual Session, which seemed to be attended by hundreds! Since the alumni
event was hosted at the Fifth Street campus, we had opportunities to give tours of the orthodontic clinic
and meet with many alumni of both the orthodontic and dental programs. We have a busy and exciting
year ahead of us, and while we are sad to see our senior siblings graduate, we are looking forward to the
next phase. No telling what the next six months will have in store for us!

Naphtali Brezniak ’86, Stephen Larson ’86, Jetson Lee ’86 and his wife Lisa, Braden Beck ’85 and his wife
Joyce, Jeffrey Wong ’85, Alan Marcus ’85, Craig Davis ’85 and his wife Karen in the Pope’s Room at
Buca di Beppo.
Joyce and I have two children, Shannon
(42 with 6 kids) and Todd (39 with 3 kids)
who both live in Idaho. I have been a Pacific
Dugoni Foundation board member since
2008 and am very proud of our school’s
new campus. Joyce volunteers weekly at the
Los Altos Cancer Discovery shop and sometimes at a friend’s dental office. My class
was very close and still gets together often. I
encourage graduates to support our school
and be thankful for the wonderful education
and the career choice they have made. My
only advice is to enjoy every day to the fullest because these past 30 years have gone Braden Beck ’85 on the Grand Cascapedia River in Quebec,
by pretty fast!
Canada with guide fishing for Atlantic Salmon.
Craig Davis — my wife Karen and I and our three boys have had a wonderful life. Orthodontics is a great
profession and has provided us well. The boys are all done with school and are starting their own lives.
As yet, there are no daughters-in laws and no grandchildren.
Alan Marcus — Well, 30 years ago seems like a very long time ago and at the same time, a short time
ago. I joined my dad, Irwin in practice on Ocean Avenue in San Francisco, and at a practice in Millbrae
which he had opened in 1983. Four years later he retired. I tried to incorporate the orthodontic philosophy
of Ron Roth after taking his course from 1991 to 1993. Sometimes I was successful at this.

I have been heard to make the statement that after 30 years, I thought, depending on your end goals of
treatment, orthodontics was the most challenging of the specialties. Just my opinion.
I never had the pleasure of being married, and to the best of my knowledge, I have no children. I love to
travel and am very thankful for everything that I have...especially my health... (knock on wood... all of you!)

Gerald Smith — Thirty years is a lot of ground to cover
in a paragraph. The vast majority of this time has been
spent treating patients and creating beautiful smiles—
such a rewarding career for the son of a World War II vet
and a German immigrant. My life’s greatest joy is my family: my wife Connie, my three great children, and, for most
of that time, a little fluffy dog named Milo. My little Milo
is gone now but was soon replaced by our first grandchild,
Kinley. Strangely, she does seem to be the standard by
which all other grandchildren are measured!
I am looking forward to the next thirty years, traveling a
little more and working a little less. As I reflect on my
time at Pacific Dugoni, the most gratifying aspect of my
ortho-dontic residency has been the strong lifelong bond
our class of five has had over the last three decades. Well
done gentlemen, well done indeed.
Jeffrey Wong — I have practiced in Fremont, CA for the
past 25 years. Sylvana and I have been married since
1987. We have three daughters and live in Castro Valley.

Brienne recently graduated from Loyola Marymount Unigranddaughter Kinley.
versity, majoring in art history with minors in business
administration and film studies. Kayley attends St. Mary’s
College. Lyndsey is a senior at Bishop O’Dowd High School and will be applying to colleges his fall. Needless to say, I will be practicing for a number of years before I can retire.
Update on the Class of 2005 from Drs. Chiappone, Cobain, Deukmedjian, Handelin, Oh, Nabipour, and Solomon.
Vincent Chiappone — Hi everybody! I live
and work down in Orange County. Before
I got here, I worked in Sacramento for a
number of years, including with fellow
UOP alumnus Dr. John Oshetski, Class of
1998. During that time I made the transition into military service. I commissioned
in the Air Force Reserve and my life got
adventurous. I volunteered multiple times
to deploy in support of Operations Iraqi/
Enduring Freedom, but was assigned
to go everywhere else…Africa, Central
America, Northernmost Alaska and Europe. I completed multiple humanitarian
missions, and earned a selection for the
best job I ever had: NATO delegate with a
reserve contingent of medical officers. I Airlift back from Central America.
was deployed to Europe six times, eventually lived there and traveled the continent for two whole summers. Some highlights: learned French
and taught English in Eastern Europe, taught combat first aid to NATO personnel, got knighted in the
Czech Republic, marched 100 miles through the Netherlands for an international training exercise.

Invitation from Dr. Gene Roberts to the Fourth Biennial
Burstone Biomechanics Symposium
Indiana and UOP Academic Alums
Last February we lost my mentor Dr. Charles Burstone. It is time for a big reunion to commemorate the
Burstone legacy. Everyone that I helped train at UOP and Indiana are his GrandStudents! On October 2324,
2015 the Fourth Biennial Burstone Biomechanics Symposium will be held at the Sheraton Indianapolis City
Center (http://go.iu.edu/kOj). Since the program was planned before the death of Dr. Burstone, it was not
organized as a memoriam. I feel it appropriate to have a fullday Presymposium on Thursday, October 22 to
celebrate the Burstone Academic Legacy. All UOP and Indiana alums will be invited once the program is
organized. To secure speakers for the program, I am contacting all of the former students who have achieved
any or all of the following: served as fulltime faculty, been a program director, and/or achieved a PhD degree. To
my recollection, three UOP and eleven Indiana graduates fit the bill (let me know if I forgot any others). This
is a very distinguished group (dean, chairs, program directors, scientists and eminent clinicians) that is providing orthodontics and basic science leadership all over the world:
o Donald (Skip) Ferguson
o Naphtali Brezniak
o HeonJae Cho
o Chris (HwaiNan) Chang
o Yeong Sim
o Sarandeep Huja
o Mattheos Sanoudos
o Toru Deguchi
o Riyad AlQawasmi
o Shaza Abass
o Jing Zhou
o Rodrigo Viecilli
o Wallace McCarlie
o Sumit Yadav

Location and Cost: The presymposium will be at the Capri Restaurant, 2602 Ruth Dr., Indianapolis, IN
46240, Tel 3172594122. This is an unsponsored, private event and we will split the cost: ~$35 each for
the room, lunch, coffee, refreshments and a reception at the end of the day. Bring your credit card, the restaurant will charge each of us individually. Look up the restaurant on the Internet and search for services in
the area. It is conveniently located just off N. Keystone Avenue, south of Keystone at the Crossing. There is
everything from luxury to very economical accommodations nearby (I465). To control ground transportation
costs, it is best to rent a small car at the airport. There is plenty of free parking at the restaurant.
Make plans to be with us for this historic event. The group photograph alone will be an academic treasure! I have
attached a crude attempt to organize the IUPUI
OrthodonticsPhD students into flow chart (attached), but I do not have adequate photos to do the same for
UOP. With good photos of everyone, we can do something outstanding. In edition, Chris Chang (our renaissance man) has produced a miniature bronze bust of Charlie Burstone for all of our speakers. In addition, I
will provide one the gold lapel pins with the biomechanics logo (the equivalent force system). Furthermore,
I plan to introduce you to two distinguished 90yr old orthodontists: Jim Baldwin and John Lindquist. John
was one of Charlie Burstone’s instructors and Jim introduced him to the principles of statics & equilibrium!
Please let me know as soon as possible if you plan to come, and send me a title for your lecture. As soon as
the program is set, I will contact the UOP and Indiana alums to invite their attendance. I am really excited
about this event and hope you are also!
Regards,
Gene

to the mystique of Art, with little-known stories of his colorful

and much more. Readers who think they know Art will be
delightfully surprised at what they discover.”
