Synopsis
Dedicated home care nurse Vlasta attends her capricious patients in the
Czech wine country, and lives for her husband Lada and her daughter, giving
them more than they are asking for. Then, one day, things change and Vlasta
is forced to step outside of her comfort zone. Drama and gentle humor
intertwine as Vlasta realizes, for the first time in her life, that she might need
some care, too.
Director’s Statement
My aim was to create an honest film about universal subjects that people are
hesitant to discuss, in this case the subjects of compassion and dying. I wanted
to infuse an emotional drama with specific humor, to tell a story that will remind
viewers about their mortality, in order to better appreciate their loved ones, and
also to remind them to take better care of themselves.
As our heroine fights for her life, she contends with the ordinary daily life of
her picturesque southern Moravia village, her husband‘s dismissive humor and
the spiritual mentality of her younger friend. These tensions create powerful
dynamics as three different worldviews clash against each other.
I chose to play the journey of self-discovery with a very particular local twist;
drama and comedy always balancing each other. This specific approach
enriches the emotional experience – and this was my vision, to communicate
subtly, yet directly “from heart to heart”, even if the film risked bordering on the
naive. After all, it is a story of a good-hearted, simple character getting to know
herself late in life, so a certain bittersweet kindness and my fondness for these
characters were absolutely crucial for finding a true feel for this film.
The biggest challenge was to make the film come alive, with a big, pulsating
heart. You can tell us if we succeeded with this labor of love called “Home Care”.

Synopsis
In a life filled with clubs, cars, cocaine and booze, Vittorio and Cesare can’t be
separated. When the call to find a greater purpose threatens to pull them and
their lifestyles apart, they struggle to keep their bond strong.
Having made Amore Tossico in the early 1980s on the colonisation of
Pasolini’s working-class suburbs by heroin – a film which became a cult,
capturing generation after generation, and is constantly talked about on
the internet, on blogs and in forums – I confess that I have often cherished
the idea of returning to those locations with the aim of recording the change
in the consumption and selling of drugs (in those suburbs, as is common
knowledge, it is never a question of just consumption). But only a series of
recent trips into what remains of those worlds and the related discoveries
helped me grasp what could really be done: not a simple factual slice of the
new junkie world, but a more ambitious snapshot of the final outcome of
Pasolini’s world.
A wealth of facts and stories came out of the twenty years – and more –
which range from the period in which Amore tossico is set out onwards: a
striking anthropological framework in terms of both quantity and truths. A
framework which, to keep playing with the references, rather than a new
Accattone or a new Amore Tossico, could produce a new Mean Streets.

Synopsis
Eastern Europe, 1835. On a barren landscape in the middle of Wallachia,
gendarme Costandin and his son are searching for a gypsy slave who has run
away from his nobleman master after being accused of having an affair with
the nobleman’s wife. While the unflappable Costandin comments on every
situation with a cheery aphorism, his son takes a more contemplative view of
the world. On their odyssey they encounter people of different nationalities
and beliefs: Turks and Russians, Christians and Jews, Romanians and
Hungarians. Each harbors prejudices against the others which have been
passed down from generation to generation. And even when the slave Carfin
is found, the adventure is far from over...
I don’t know which psychologist said that a person is mentally healthy only if
they know where they come from, where they are and where they want to go. I
believe this applies to societies too, not only individuals. The Romanian society
will not be truly healthy until it faces its past with honesty and lucidity – be it the
recent or the remote past.
The movie Aferim! is an attempt to gaze into the past, to take a journey inside
the mentalities of the beginning of the 19th century – all epistemological
imperfections inherent to such an enterprise included. It is obvious that such
an effort would be pointless should we not believe that this hazy past holds the
explanation for certain present issues.
“We research each period firstly for the promises they contain for the following
period” says cultural historian Johan Huizinga. More than anything, I want this
film to be a stimulus that makes the audience question in a deeper and more
systematic way the issues I was only able to bring up.

Synopsis
In war-torn Kosovo, Nenad’s family lives in a Serbian Christian enclave
surrounded by a large Albanian Muslim community. When his beloved
grandfather dies, the ten-year-old boy is determined that he should have a
proper burial even if the cemetery is outside the enclave. His quest will take
Nenad across enemy lines and he will find friends in unlikely places.
With this film I want to explore the essence of the Serbian/Albanian dispute,
which resulted – fifteen years ago – in war, destruction and crimes. But I
want to raise the following question: is coexistence still possible between
these two communities in a reality marked by the presence of enclaves,
isolated islands of Christian minority surrounded by a sea of Muslim
majority?
My answer is crystal clear: hated based on fear of what’s different and
diverse still lingers between the two ethnic communities. And fear is the
absence of love... That’s why the hero in this story is a ten-year old boy who
dares to do something unimaginable for both communities in Kosovo –
Christian and Muslim: to gain a friend on the opposite side!
I want to make a film based on the eternal and edifying story about
forgiveness and love.

Synopsis
After Mamuka is released from prison, he tries to rescue his family, who live in a
seaside town, from poverty. His mother is working abroad, father is confined to

Synopsis
Peter “Koza” Baláž is a former Olympic boxer. He and his girlfriend Miša live
in a dilapidated housing estate, constantly struggling to make ends meet.
When Miša learns that she is expecting a baby, she decides to terminate her
pregnancy and asks Koza to find the necessary money. Koza, who has not
trained in a while, steps back into the ring, hoping to earn some much-needed
cash and possibly change Miša’s mind. He and his manager, Zvonko, embark
on a “tour” through uncountable fights, where success seems impossible.
How many blows must Koza take, in order to earn a decent family life?
Koza is a simple guy from a special school for kids with learning disabilities and
disorders, but what I really respect about him is that considering the situation
he grew up in, he worked his way up. His parents left him with his grandmother
and since Koza’s father was a boxer, too, Koza wanted to impress his dad and
started boxing because of him, hoping the parents would take him back. Koza is
a nice person, but he’s somehow struggling to get control of his life. I knew that
hiring him to do the film would also make his life a bit easier – he would get paid
and would get some extra cash beside his low disability pension. He was glad
to have this opportunity and he hoped his life would change.Of course, nobody
can change your life for you. You only can do it on your own. But what helped
Koza is that for four years, during the time we were preparing and shooting the
film, he was in contact with a different reality, which, of course, influenced him,
changed his perception of life, moved him into a different direction.
Koza’s story is tough and sad, it deals with several pressing and complicated
issues, but that was not the storyline we wanted to emphasize. On the contrary,
we even wanted to repress it to avoid the pathos which usually emerges when
one stresses pain, misery and misfortune. To express the “step-back” formally,
as well, with cinematographer Martin Kollár we decided to shoot the film with a
static camera and in long shots. That gives the audience a bit of a psychological
distance and emotional freedom in the film.

Synopsis
Jesus does make up for a troupe of drag performers in Havana, but dreams
of being a performer. When he finally gets his chance to be on stage, a
stranger emerges from the crowd and punches him in the face. The stranger
is his father Angel, a former boxer, who has been absent from his life for 15
years. As father and son clash over their opposing expectations of each
other, Viva becomes a love story as the men struggle to understand one
another and become a family again.

Synopsis
Experienced geologist Kristian Eikfjord has accepted a job offer out of town.
He is getting ready to move from the city of Geiranger with his family, when he
and his colleagues measure small geological changes underground. Kristian
gets worried, and his worst nightmare is about to come true, when the alarm
goes off and disaster is inevitable. With less than 10 minutes to react, it
becomes a race against time in order to save as many as possible including
his own family.
With «THE WAVE» I wanted to bring a traditional Hollywood genre closer
to home. Moving away from president’s speeches and megacity mayhem,
I wanted to experience the destruction through a normal family and the
small community they live in. Working from the thought that the closer you
feel to the characters, the more impact the imposing disaster will have.
This choice also influenced our visual approach to the story, shooting most
of the film in a handheld almost documentary style. I wanted the audience
to feel like they were thrown into this world with our characters - running
for their lives, gasping for breath.
And although we of course wanted to create spectacular action sequences
through practical and visual effects, the biggest impact should always
come from the emotions of the human drama.

Synopsis
Mityo has lost everything that matters to him: his wife, his work and his son’s
trust. Out of desperation, he agrees to smuggle illegal immigrants from Syria
into Bulgaria. On his final trip, Mityo’s left at a mercy of Judgment Mountain.
Can he be forgiven for a terrible sin committed 25 years ago?
I arrived at the idea for this film while shooting three documentaries in the
Southeast of Bulgaria, near the spot where three borders meet – Bulgarian,
Greek and Turkish. I spent quite a bit of time there – I found many real stories
and interesting characters. They are now in the film. During the communist
period, up until twenty years ago, would – be defectors from the communist
bloc were trying to escape to the West by illegally crossing Bulgaria’s southern
border. Today, thousands of migrants from Syria also try their luck crossing
the same border, but in the opposite direction – to the “Promised Land” of
the European Union. This strange correlation between different time periods
and one and the same place was what inspired me to make this film.

Synopsis
Ane’s life takes a turn when a bouquet of flowers is delivered to her house
every week, always at the same time and always anonymously. A similar
mysterious delivery of flowers also affects the lives of Lourdes and her
mother-in-law Tere. A weekly bouquet, left by a stranger in memory of
someone important in their lives causes subtle changes in their relationships.
This is the story of three women, three lives altered by the mere presence of
bouquets of flowers. Flowers that will make feelings blossom inside them that
had seemed long forgotten ...
We live surrounded by flowers. Flowers at weddings, and at funerals, flowers
on the table, flowers on walls, in a garden, or by the road. It’s as if we’re
constantly turning to their image to say what often can’t be expressed in
words. Few images serve to convey such a large variety of things. Depending
on the context in which they’re given, the meaning of these flowers can
change dramatically. And depending upon who sees them, or who receives
them, the meaning can also differ.
“Loreak” arose from this ambiguity and these possible meanings. We found
it interesting to explore how something like a bunch of flowers, at first so
stripped of meaning, can become the clearest of messages. And with that,
can change the reality of its recipient.
“Loreak” is a film packed with flowers. Flowers in different contexts and,
therefore, flowers that tell different stories but that, in the end, converge
into one single message.

Synopsis
In Portugal – one European country in crisis – a film director proposes to build
fictional stories from the miserable reality he is immersed in. However, failing
to find meaning in his work, he cowardly runs away and leaves the beautiful
Scheherazade to stand in his shoes. She will require enthusiasm and courage
so as not to bore the King with sad stories of this country! As the nights pass,
restlessness leads to desolation and in turn to enchantment. Therefore
Scheherazade organises the stories she tells the King in three volumes. She
begins like this: “It hath reached me, O auspicious King, that in a sad country
among all countries…”.
As Mil e Uma Noites is inspired by the structure of the book Arabian Nights.
Every night, in danger of being beheaded, Scheherazade tells King Shahryar
unfinished tales to continue them the following night, hence defying his
promise of murdering his new wives after their wedding night.
But the stories narrated here are not the Persian, Egyptian or Indian tales
of the book. They are stories that originate from the reality of a disgraced
country, Portugal, over one year. This country lives the effects of an
economic crisis that spurred a financial aid programme coordinated by
the self-named “troika”, consisting of the International Monetary Fund, the
European Commission and the European Central Bank.
As in the book, these stories will be tragic and comical, with rich and poor,
powerless and powerful people, filled with surprising and extraordinary
events.

Synopsis
XENiA follows two young brothers in search of their birth father across
the colorful landscape of Greece. Dany, 16, leaves Crete to find his brother
Odysseus who lives in Athens and they journey to Thessaloniki where they
think their father is living. When the handsome Odysseus isn’t protecting his
daydreaming, gay younger brother, he auditions for the television talent show
“Greek Star” where he pursues his fantasy of becoming a singing star. A comic
and touching road trip of two brothers connecting and searching for their
dreams.
The main characters of this story Danny and Odysseus could easily belong to
those fairy tales about children who get lost in the woods or they are forced
to grow up on their own in a hostile environment, abandoned by adults who
have already rejected them long before. They are born and raised in Greece
in the last breath of the previous century, the two brothers are missing the
all-important Greek ID. In a country where nationality is defined by bloodline
rather than birth place, Danny and Odysseus are still considered foreigners,
growing up in a country in a financial turmoil, amidst violent change, racism
and broken dreams.
As they roam through the country, the two brothers will test their limits and
conquer their fears, make friends and enemies and come face to face with
themselves.
Their weapon is a song their mother taught them when they were young and
that they never stopped singing. A song that bids farewell to a world that
ends, celebrating a new age of possibilities, values and understanding for
those who dare to sing it.
XENiA could be a love song for those few brave men from the first generation
of the 21stCentury.

Synopsis
Three different love stories, set in three consecutive decades, in two
neighbouring Balkan villages burdened with a long history of inter-ethnic
hatred: this is a film about the dangers – and the enduring strength – of
forbidden love.
As a filmmaker, I have been long intrigued by the ever-present inter-ethnic
hatreds in the Balkan region, and conflicts rooted in war, religion or politics.
With this film, I wanted to explore three separate stories of a Croatian boy and
a girl from a Serbian family, across three decades. The stories all take place
in the same location, in the sun-scorched villages, and the young lovers are
always in their early twenties. Using the lens of these three stories, I wanted
to tease out the accumulated atmosphere of evil that smoulders among the
damaged communities in this region. My aim as a director was to contrast the
lush natural world and the carefree certainty of youth with human actions
that are the fruit of long-standing hatreds, history, tradition, confusion and
fear, and to use cinematic storytelling to analyze the conditioned changes
that influence the lives of young people in this region.
I have always wanted to make a film that would act as a mirror for all of us
in these regions; that would bring us face to face with the moments when
we allowed ourselves to act, not as ordinary people, but as a community
controlled by darker, pre-conditioned urges. I want to show what happened
when people followed a path that led to shameful euphoria in the short term,
but that ultimately caused deep unhappiness and unnecessary suffering.
The High Sun celebrates selflessness and love – the very best of human
nature that is still struggling to re-emerge victorious in our region. Because
there is one thing I am sure about: at the end of the day, politics and extreme
nationalism never win. Love does.

Synopsis
God exists. He lives in Brussels. He’s odious to his wife and daughter and

Synopsis
THE PARADISE SUITE is a story about six people finding each other and,
sometimes with just one glance, influencing each other’s lives irreversibly:
For the beautiful young Bulgarian Jenya, her journey to Amsterdam turns out
to be the opposite of what she hoped for. Her grueling captivity forces the
angelic African, Yaya, to fight for her freedom - a dangerous fight in which
he loses everything but his beloved faith. The Serbian war criminal Ivica, who
has just become a father, is painfully confronted with the fact that crimes
will never go unpunished. Bosnian Seka has nothing left to live for except
her vengeance but as it turns out, it’s that same vengeance that brings love
back in her life. And when the Swedish piano-wonder boy, Lukas, runs away
from his new temporary home, his father Stig finally realizes that their mutual
passion for music is damaging to their relationship.
Although I know I can’t change humankind, hopefully the film will create some
awareness about the complex and sometimes ruthless society we live in. The
storylines and characters are based on true stories. We all are able to relate to
these stories somehow. The Paradise Suite is an observation of a period of time
but is a poetic interpretation of that reality. The Paradise Suite is a both raw and
poetic praise to human strength for survival.

Synopsis
In Skopje, at the beginning of the 90’s; the national celebration the newlyestablished independent state of the Republic of Macedonia, coincides with
the tenth anniversary of Deputy Minister Nikola and his wife Ana.
Throughout a single night, during which their marriage faces a crisis
flashbacks reveal that Nikola is involved in a political scandal at his Ministry
related to the privatization of a state-owned company. Heated arguments
between Nikola and Ana, bring all of their problems, frustrations, and secrets

Synopsis
Three daughters battle for acceptance, redemption and new opportunities.
All three carry their fathers, yet they need them to confront themselves. It’s a
story about empowerment, love and internal strength.
Some societies prize sons more than daughters, with fathers who traditionally
still wish for a male offspring to carry on the family name and often inherit
them. At the same time, the role of daughter in many societies often includes
being a primary caregiver to aging, frail parents. In the societies with high life
expectancy, daughter‘s identity of a „mother“ is in a way extended on her own
parents in their old age. Daughter – the „inferior“ offspring in father‘s young age
– becomes the „more important“ offspring in his old age.
This story explores woman as daughter, and what that role may imply. That‘s why
I decided upon a tryptich, three different stories about daughters of different
age, status and families, in order to show more than one intimate relationship
and cover a wider range of relations. One daughter is just starting to build her
relationship with her father; the other is irretrievably losing her established
relationship with her father; and the third one is confronting her broken
relationship with her father in order to accept her future more easily.
Their stories take place simultaneously, but independently, because they are
all intimate and authentic. They brush without knowing how much they have in
common. All three daughters carry their fathers, yet they need their fathers as
well in order to confront themselves. The daughter-father relationship is strong
even when it is under strain, just being built, or deeply marred by past events.
Daughters in this story are strong personalities with many flaws, limitations,
fears and defeats, daring to deal with their own mistakes and transformations.
They are antiheroines who have no illusions about themselves, but they never
give up and never surrender their dreams about a better future.

Synopsis
Based on a true story, MODRIS depicts the downward trajectory in the life of
a 17-year old boy. A conflict with his mother proves to be a fatal turning point
when she turns him over to the police to teach him a lesson.
Modris’ story is based on real life events. It was told to me by a lawyer who
worked on the case and as same as him, I just couldn’t forget it. I couldn’t
forget it because after hearing this, how an individual, a young boy, had
all his life more or less destroyed fear arose in me how easy it is in Latvia
to lose someone in the justice system. What happened at first seems very
simple: a mother tried to teach her son a lesson and went a little too far. But
what struck me the most was that the Latvian justice system just didn’t, or
didn’t want to see the bigger picture. Besides the conflict of the governing
system and the citizen, another conflict – the one of the parent and child
touched me in this story. It seems that at some point – maybe the absence of
the father – the relationship of the mother and son turned so bad, that they
couldn’t return to a beginning point and try to solve this. It seems that today
more and more families are living with this – the helplessness of dealing with
their relationships and problems within them. A complete opposite are the
relationships between Modris and his teenage peers. And that’s what makes
this story so beautiful. We see that just one person has so many angles to
his ways of communicating, living and co-existing with so many sides of the
everyday life. The question is, why are they so drastically different? With
the story of Modris we show this. Every person has at least one story worth
telling – Modris’ one is special and I hope that the cinematic experience after
watching the film will be as great as the realization of the social problems
around us.

Synopsis
In a remote Albanian town where the residents claim nothing ever happens,
down-to-earth Juli, entrepreneurial Ben and free spirit Nora run a quirky cafe/
bar called Bota. But progress is coming in the form of a highway construction
project which also brings a secret from the villages traumatic past.
No matter how hard we try to forget, our past is always present. It is
inescapable. The most we can do is comprehend and try to live with it and
ourselves. Growing up in socialist Albania, I experienced first hand the
immense transformation the Balkans have undergone these past twenty
years. Myself and my co-director have felt compelled by this same inquiry.
What are the daily confrontations and lingering traumas of men and woman,
born and raised in extreme circumstances? How does one survive? How do
we go on? For many years, we have immersed ourselves in Balkan heritage
and history. But more importantly, we met many people who lived through
these times and collected their stories.
Our goal with BOTA was to capture not only the surface dramas but also the tiny
nuances that reflect the lasting truth of these radiant and desperate people.
BOTA is a metaphor for Albania’s journey from totalitarian dictatorship to socalled democracy. The main character, Juli, sees the future staring right at
her, yet weighed down by the past, prolongs the necessary leap into real life.
The challenge with BOTA was to create a uniquely Albanian vision illustrating
that even in a desolate swampland there is something vital and alive.

Synopsis
X and Shirley are only 13 years old. But they know all about violence, drugs and
pornography: they are experiencing these every day at school. Among those
hopeless and too fast growing children, they will come together as a unique
couple. Loneliness is indeed easier when somebody shares it. Sometimes you
even feel like being understood … Along the film, these two preteens will try to
create themself a world of illusion and hope. A rush forward to find love they are
desperately lacking…A violent and rough journey with some intense moments of
genuine childish happiness like they have never experienced.
A perpetual Move – I have been working for several months with Tullio Forgiarini
and Nicolas Steil to make this film. Tullio is the author of the original novel: “Amok”
and also a teacher. Nicolas is the co-writer and producer of the film. This film wants
to be the voice of a young adolescence in need for love.
The urgency of filming – The children we casted were totally inexperienced. They
had no theatre background nor had acted in a film or television production. A child
is physically and psychologically constantly changing. Therefore, we had to shoot
quickly. We started shortly after the finalisation of the casting and some workshops
with the young actors. I helped them to discover and construct their character. They
had to work hard. Everything was new for them. Technically and psychologically
they had everything to learn. The scenes they had to play were sometimes violent
and tense. It was hard form them to cope with this. I needed them to interpret this
violence as I did not want them to be just physically violent on screen.
Technically – Keeping the children’s focus into the filming process was a challenge.
I tried to keep them into the center of the image. I avoided any technical cut of film
sequences to let them work freely. Along the shooting days, their coming of age
awkwardness found its place into the film narration. Their lack of experiences
became a real plus for the credibility of the story. The way they walk with
hesitation, their childish way of talking, the fear they had of holding each other’s
hands, all these details found a place into the film narration. I was almost afraid
they would turn into real actors as I did not want them to lose their naivety.

Synopsis
Ten-year old Nori and his father Gezim earn their living by selling cigarettes
in the pre-war Kosovo of the nineties. Gezim wants to hear nothing of Nori’s
mother. He is an expert at escaping the past, and now he wants to flee
Kosovo without Nori. But the boy tries everything in his means to prevent
his dad from leaving. An accident lands Nori in the hospital, and when he
gets out, his father is simply gone.
Angry, yet determined, Nori sets out on a perilous journey to find his father
and indeed finds him in Germany. With the persistence only a child can
have, he confronts his father whom he cannot forgive for his desertion.
BABAI depicts a pre-war atmosphere in which people become the playthings
of abstruse political powers. They sit, a bomb beneath their asses, and talk
about the weather. It is precisely this feeling and its naturalness that I want
to capture - without comment or condescension. The film’s core is Nori’s
personal story. I imagine the figure of the father as a centre point around
which Nori revolves and through which Nori is introduced to life. His absolute
trust is destroyed when the father leaves. From Nori’s perspective there is
nothing that would justify this separation. Nori fights against it with all his
strength. His behaviour is an attempt to maintain his own innocence. The
pain he feels from separation is less due to the fact that he has to live without
a father and more that he must live without trust.

Angry bearded men, veiled women, demolished cities: Iraq, as seen through
the eyes of the western media. What happened to the enlightened society
of the 1950s and 1960s? How did it come to this? A globalized middle-class
Iraqi family in diaspora speaks.
I spent my childhood in Baghdad in the early 1960s in a typical middle class
family at that time in Iraq. My grandfather was a judge. My aunts and uncles,
engineers or doctors. I grew up with Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Shakespeare
and the modern sciences and, of course, the Arab classics and the singers
Fairuz and Umm Kulthum. When the army staged a coup, I first heard the
name of the future dictator: Saddam Hussein. He was then an assassin. We
fled to Switzerland, where I grew up. During my childhood, I was irritated by
the fact that I knew about many European artists while my classmates didn’t
know anything about the Arab world. At best, they confused Iran with Iraq.
Later on, when I visited my aunts and uncles in exile, we used to make fun of
the ’ignorant western people’. In 2003, the invasion of the US troops wiped
that smile off our faces.
Now, my family is scattered all over the world. From Auckland to Los Angeles,
from Moscow to Paris and London: we belong to the 4-5 million Iraqis who
do not live in their home country anymore. Like many other Iraqi middle-class
families, we’ve become a globalized family that is now well integrated into the
western society. Only a few old aunts have stayed in Iraq. Thanks to them and
the modern information technologies and social media, we now know more
about the developments in Iraq than we ever wished for …
How did it come to this, that all our dreams of a renaissance of the Arab world
and the wish for a transformation into a modern, just society were so abruptly
and brutally destroyed? Is there a possibility to reconstruct this dream by
building on our experiences of migration? «Iraqi Odyssey» tells this story.

Synopsis
A young man, Endel Nelis, arrives in Haapsalu, Estonia, in the early 1950’s,
having left Leningrad to escape the secret police. He finds work as a teacher
and founds a sports club for his students, where he starts teaching them his
great passion – fencing. Disapproving, the school’s principal starts investigating
Endel’s background.
Fencing becomes a form of self-expression for the children, and Endel becomes
a role model and father figure. He learns to love the children, many of whom
have been orphaned as a result of the Russian occupation. When the children
want to participate in a national fencing tournament in Leningrad, Endel must
make a choice; risk everything to take the children to Leningrad or put his safety
first and disappoint them.
Stories about encounters between children and adults have always interested
me. Almost all of us can remember an adult whose presence or words at the
right time in our childhood have inspired or given the crucial nudge in the right
direction, helping us to realize a dream or pursue our dream job. I had teachers
who encouraged me to make films, and I don’t think I would be a director
without them.
The core theme of THE FENCER is the role of adults in children’s lives, how
adults see children and their interests, and how adults can steer children in
the right direction. It’s a question that fascinates and puzzles: how do people
become who they are?
I want to tell stories that tell the truth about life.

Synopsis

When I was 17, like most teenagers, I was in a hurry to make choices while all
the while being filled with doubt and fear. I wrote the story for The Summer of
Sangailė with the guiding idea that sometimes it only takes a chance encounter
with someone who helps you see yourself in a different light to overcome certain
difficulties. I wanted this kind and caring individual to be another young girl of
the same age, but whose personality was diametrically opposed to Sangailė’s in
order to bring out her flaws and contradictions. Setting aside the issue of gender
while highlighting the symmetry of bodies seemed indispensable in order to
focus on the narrative of human beings in the making, which is at the heart of
this story. From the writing stage I had envisioned a film that would be bright
and light, even if the movie addresses adole scent unrest and self-destructive
behavior, for with hindsight, obstacles that seemed insurmountable at the time
are now put in their proper perspective. Yet, the joys of adolescence remain
intense. Moments of fear and suffering appear to us today as necessary steps
to find balance in our lives, emancipate ourselves and grow up. Talking about
adolescence, I wanted to make a very musical film that was also a love story with
a sensorial, sensual dimension and which had a strong emotional impact. I spent
my adolescence in Lithuania, a country with a special, practically obsessive
relationship with aviation. Every summer, like everyone, I went to see a great
number of air shows. It seemed to me that this popular Lithuanian pastime would
be the perfect metaphor for Sangailė. Aerobatics, an extreme sport, requires true
self-control and that is just the thing that Sangailė seems to lack the most. She
has to struggle within to free herself and achieve her dream.

Synopsis
A man dies of a heart attack while his oblivious wife noisily prepares dinner;
a dying woman clings to her money and jewels; a ferry passenger collapses
after paying for his lunch. Death, like life, is often absurd.
Reminiscent of a modern Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, Sam and Jonathan,
two travelling salesmen peddling novelty items, take us through a series of
surreal, kaleidoscopic vignettes. A trip that shows us the beauty of single
moments, the pettiness of others, the humor and tragedy that is in us, life’s
grandeur as well as the humanity’s frailty.
With this project I have the ambition to take the spectator on a kaleidoscopic
wandering through human destinies. A trip that shows us the beauty of single
moment, the pettiness of others, the humour and tragedy that is in us, life’s
grandeur as well as frailty of humanity. Above all my ambition is to create
all this with utmost visual power combined with a very simple but distinct
dialogue.
