COMPETITION RULES & CONDITIONS
1) Entry forms and fees to reach the Competition Secretary by closing date: Friday 15th May 2015
2) Competition pieces can be set up from 8.00am on the day of the exhibition.
All competition entries must be in place by 9.45am and may not be removed before 5.00pm
The committee will stage late exhibits, only if the judging of that class has not already commenced
Admittance for setting up of Group Classes S, T & U will be restricted to two people per table.
Staging of these group tables ONLY is available from 6pm - 8pm on Friday 12th June.
3) Entries will be judged under British Sugarcraft Guild Guidelines which have the same standard in every competition. New
copies of the Guidelines (Issue 1: August 2014) which give the marking criteria for each class, and rules and guidelines for
competitors, are available from the BSG National Office: Tel: 0161 222 9699 / E.mail: [email protected]

4) Care must be taken to comply with the specifications given for each class. Entries that do not comply will not be judged.
Please pay particular reference to use of dummies, artificial decoration and overall size of exhibit. “No artificial decorations”
– means NO stamens, wires, ribbons, thread, lace, dried materials, twigs, stones, etc may be used in or on the exhibit
(except for ribbon edging on boards). Everything must be edible.
5) Cakes will not be cut unless indicated, and dummies may be used unless otherwise stated.
6) Competitors will be issued with entry numbers for each exhibit, which must be clearly and securely attached to the front and
rear of the piece. No personal identification to be displayed.
7) All care will be taken of exhibits, but the organisers cannot be held responsible for any loss or damage.
8) All entries must be original, unaided, work of the competitor. The components must not have been used, either as a
whole or in part, in any previous competition
9) Wires must not be directly inserted into cake or dummy, posy picks or similar must be used.
10) Use of gold, silver or other metallic colour / dust must be edible and non-toxic, unless used solely on a removable piece,
which is not expected to be eaten. The product(s) used should be displayed beside the exhibit.
11) Where “Ribbon Insertion” is used, the ribbon must be made from an edible medium.
12) Each class clearly states whether artificial (non-edible) decoration may be used. The use of feathers or metallic cake
jewellery is not permitted.
13) Competitors may enter ONE exhibit only in each competition class.
14) ALL Competitors must hold a valid entry ticket for admission to the exhibition.
15) Boards/drums can be of any shape but must fit inside a square of the dimensions shown for each class. Allowance will be
made for normal manufacturing tolerances. Edges should be neatened. Eg with ribbon braid etc.
16) The competition entry form, child declaration and competition schedule together form the competition rules and conditions.
By entering the competitions you are deemed to have accepted these rules and conditions, any infringement could result in
your disqualification from the competition.
17) The decision of the Chairman of Judges’ is final and NO correspondence will be entered into after the exhibition has closed.
18) The Organisers have the right to use photographs they have had taken of Competitors items for non-commercial purposes.
ALL PHOTOGRAPHY TO BE FOR PERSONAL USE ONLY. Photographs of the exhibits may not be published either in
print or electronically, without the explicit permission of the Exhibition Organisers.

The exhibition is open to the public for entry throughout the day, please note when making travel arrangements:
ALL GROUP TABLES & INDIVIDUAL EXHIBITS MUST REMAIN IN PLACE
UNTIL THE EXHIBITION CLOSES AT 5.00PM
If after entering you find that you are unable to complete your competition piece – please do advise the
Competition Secretary at the earliest opportunity. No-shows result in empty table space on the day.

COMPETITION CLASSES
MASTERCLASS:
Open to all those who have won a Gold award in any Sugarcraft division of a major BSG
competition. Competitors are limited to winning a maximum of three Gold awards in any
one class in this division.
CLASS A:
A Royal Iced Cake or A Sugarpaste Cake – “Competitors’ Choice”
Please advise size of exhibit on entry form and details of piece
(e.g. Royal Iced or Sugarpaste Cake)
OPEN DIVISION:
Open to anyone, except those who have won three Gold awards in any one class in the
Open Division. The competitor can enter any other class in the Open Division and need not
previously have entered the Novice Division.
CLASS B: ROYAL ICING – “Fire & Ice”
A TWO tier cake or dummy, coated in Royal Icing.
All decorations to be made from Royal Icing. No artificial decoration allowed.
Not stacked. Tiers are to be supported on pillars, separators or a suitable stand.
Exhibit to be displayed in an area not exceeding 14” square.
CLASS C: FLORAL ARRANGEMENT – “Autumn Gold”
Must include Flowers, Buds, Berries and Complimentary Foliage. Made with gum paste
or flower paste. Wires, tape, thread, ribbon and stamens are allowed.
To be presented in a suitable container. Staysoft, Dryhard & Oasis may be used.
Exhibit to be displayed in an area not exceeding 12” square.
Please supply a list of the botanical and/or the common names of the flowers used
alongside the exhibit.
CLASS D: SUGARPASTE CAKE – “Summer Wedding”
A TWO tier cake or dummy to be coated with Sugarpaste and decorated with any edible
medium. Only wires, tape, thread, & stamens allowed. No other artificial decoration.
Tiers may be stacked, on pillars, separators or a suitable stand.
Exhibit to be displayed in an area not exceeding 14” square.
CLASS E: GELATINE FLOWERS – “A Fascinator for the Head”
To include flowers and foliage.
All flowers and foliage to be made with Gelatine – no other medium allowed.
Only wires, tape, thread and stamens allowed.
Exhibit to be displayed on a headband or comb, presented on a fabric covered board
not exceeding 10” square.
Please supply a list of the botanical and/or the common names of the flowers used
alongside the exhibit.
CLASS F: NOVELTY CAKE – “Character Figure”
A Novelty Cake depicting a character figure. Exhibit to be displayed in an area not
exceeding 16” square. The character depicted should not be subject to any copyright.
At least 50% of the mass of the whole exhibit must be either Fruit / Madeira / Sponge /
chocolate biscuit cake or rice krispie cake. If there is any doubt the cake will be cut or
dismantled.
No pre-shaped specialty tins allowed. No dummies allowed. The cake to be covered with
any edible decorative medium. No artificial decorations to be used.

CLASS G: PAINTED PLAQUE – “Messing About On The River”
A painted picture on a plaque with a frame all to be made from any edible medium.
Exhibit to be suitably displayed in an area not exceeding 10” square.
NB. A plaque is a thin flat ornamental tablet of any edible medium which can be lifted as a complete item
and used on a cake. A coated board is NOT a plaque
CLASS H: MINIATURE – “Jack In The Box”
Any edible mediums may be used.
To be displayed on a cake board or edible base. Any supports used must be edible.
No artificial decoration to be used in the exhibit
Exhibit to fit inside a 6” cube.
DECORATED FRUIT CAKE - SUGARPASTE
CLASS I:
An 8” (20cm) ROUND rich fruit cake to be covered with Marzipan and coated with white
sugarpaste. To be presented on an 11” (28cm) sugarpaste coated board. The base of
the cake to be neatened with shell edging or snail’s trail piped in white royal icing or letdown sugarpaste. The cake to be additionally decorated with embossing and/or crimping
skills only. All work to be directly on to the cake. Please supply a list of ingredients used
– for judges use only. THE CAKE WILL BE CUT AND TASTED.
NOVICE DIVISION:
A Novice is a beginner or someone new to a particular skill that has not won a Gold award
in ANY ONE class at a BSG competition.
CLASS J: SUGARPASTE CAKE – “Black and White”
A single tier cake or dummy of your choice, coated with sugarpaste.
Black and White only – no other colour permitted.
Decorative work may include Royal Icing, Brush Embroidery & Run-Outs, Sugarpaste,
Pastillage, Flower paste and UNWIRED hand-made sugar flowers.
No artificial decoration allowed.
Exhibit to be displayed in an area not exceeding 12” square.
CLASS K: FLORAL SPRAY – “Green and Cream”
Hand made wired sugar flowers made with gum paste, flower paste or any edible
medium. The item should include flowers with buds and complimentary foliage.
Green and Cream only – no other colour permitted.
Limited ornamentation can include beads, pearls. Also wire, stamens, thread and tape.
To be presented on a suitable display container or fabric base. Staysoft, Dryhard & Oasis
may be used. The whole exhibit must be displayed in an area not exceeding 10” square.
Please supply a list of the botanical and/or the common names of the flowers used
alongside the exhibit.
CLASS L: BAS RELIEF PLAQUE – “On The Beach”
A decorated plaque to be made from Sugarpaste, Pastillage, or Royal icing. The main
feature of the plaque to be completed in Bas-Relief. No artificial decoration allowed.
Plaque to be no more than 10” diameter and to be presented on a plate stand.
NB. A plaque is a thin flat ornamental tablet of any edible medium which can be lifted as a complete item
and used on a cake. A coated board is NOT a plaque. Bas Relief is a form of sculpture in which the figures
project from the background and should stand no more than 1 inch / 2.5cm high from the plaque.
CLASS M: AFTERNOON TEA FANCIES – “Vintage!”
A selection of 8 home-made Cup Cakes showing 4 different flavours and decorations.
Selection to be of competitor’s choice and should be presented in Medium paper cases
(2” x 1½“) and displayed on a board, plate or cake stand not exceeding 12” round.
An example of each flavour will be cut and tasted. Recipes to be displayed.

CHILDREN’S DIVISION:
Children are limited to winning three Gold awards in any one age group.
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR CHILDREN’S CLASSES:
TO ENSURE FAIRNESS, ALL ENTRANTS MUST SUBMIT A COMPLETED DECLARATION
FORM ON THE BACK OF THE ENTRY FORM; SIGNED BY A PARENT, TUTOR OR CYGNET
CO-ORDINATOR, TO DECLARE THAT THE EXHIBIT IS ENTIRELY THE CHILD’S OWN
WORK.
Failure to provide the correct documentation could result in disqualification.
CLASS N - TOTS:
Open to those under 7 years of age on the date of the competition.
Age to be displayed with the exhibit.
“HALLOWE’EN” 6 Decorated Biscuits
Biscuits coated and decorated with any edible medium to depict the theme.
NO artificial decoration allowed.
Biscuits may be shop bought or home-baked.
Exhibit to be displayed in an area not exceeding 10” square.
CLASS O - MINORS:
Open to those under 9 years of age on the date of the competition.
Age to be displayed with the exhibit.
“HALLOWE’EN” 6 Decorated Biscuits
Biscuits coated and decorated with any edible medium to depict the theme.
NO artificial decoration allowed.
Biscuits may be shop bought or home-baked.
Exhibit to be displayed in an area not exceeding 10” square.
CLASS P - JUNIORS:
Open to those under 12 years of age on the date of the competition.
Age to be displayed with the exhibit.
“HALLOWE’EN” 8 Decorated Cupcakes
Cupcakes decorated with any edible medium to depict the theme.
NO artificial decoration allowed.
Cupcakes may be shop bought or home-baked and will NOT be tasted.
Exhibit to be displayed in an area not exceeding 12” round.
CLASS Q - TEENS:
Open to those under 18 years of age on the date of the competition.
Age to be displayed with the exhibit.
“HALLOWE’EN” – Sugarpaste Cake
A cake or dummy, coated in sugarpaste and decorated with any edible medium to depict
the theme.
NO artificial decoration allowed.
Exhibit to be displayed in an area not exceeding 12” square.

GROUP PROJECTS:
CLASS R: CHILDREN’S GROUP PROJECT – “HALLOWE’EN”
An 18” board covered and decorated using any edible mediums
to depict the Theme.
No artificial decoration allowed.
The project may be completed by any number of Children.
Exhibit to be displayed in an area not exceeding 18” square.
CLASS S: PROJECT TABLE - TO BE JUDGED - Theme “LADIES’ DAY”
A display of items of work by a branch or group
(low member participation will not be penalised)
ALL LEVELS OF ABILITY ARE ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE
Work MUST NOT have previously been displayed.
Exhibits to show a wide range of skills and should not exceed more than 50% of any one
skill or items shown (e.g. 50% floral display). All items on display must comply with the
theme. Marks will be awarded for the overall display
The group name must not be displayed until judging has been completed.
Only one table per branch or group. (72” long x 29.5” wide x 30” high – ¾ “ top thickness)
CLASS T: BRANCH SHOWCASE – To be Judged by Public Vote & Honoured Guest
A display of members’ work. Previously displayed exhibits may be used.
All skill levels can be displayed.
Branch name must not be displayed until judging has closed.
Only one showcase table per branch. (72” x 29.5” x 30” high – ¾ “ top thickness)
CLASS U: COLLEGE / CLASS TABLE - NOT JUDGED
A display of students’ work from a college or class.
College / Class name and promotional literature may be displayed.
Only one table per College / Class. (72” x 29.5” x 30” high – ¾ “ top thickness)

CLASS V: IKEBANA – MORIBANA
Ikebana – Moribana: Upright Style
Hand-made Cold Porcelain flowers featuring ONE type of flower with buds and foliage,
arranged in the Upright Style Moribana.
To be presented on a suitable base or container – Fabric & Ribbon are Not Allowed.
Wires, paper covered / coloured metallic wires, floristry tape, stamens, cottons, Staysoft,
Dryhard & Oasis are all allowed. Exhibit to be displayed in an area not exceeding 14”
Square.
This class to be judged independently from the Sugarcraft Classes by two specialist Cold
Porcelain Judges
Judging of CLASS V – COLD PORCELAIN will be performed by two judges chosen for their experience
within the medium. They will judge each entry individually, without conferring in the first instance. Their
combined marks will then be totalled to find an overall winner of the class, plus 2nd and 3rd placing.
A maximum of 10 points will be awarded for each of the following aspects: (Total = 100 points)
Visual impact
Suitability of flowers for chosen design
Surface finishing
Use of colour
Highlighting & Shading
Accuracy of Modelling & Moulding
Assembly & Stability
Creativity
Proportion
Balance of display
