YMCA of Brockville and Area
2015 Community Impact Report
Community starts here...
Brockville is a gem of a community where people truly take part to make it a
better place. We appreciate all who come to the YMCA to become healthier,
to find friendship, to make a difference, to be cared for or to provide care for
others. At the YMCA, the social fabric of our community is strengthened.
Together as volunteers, donors and staff we ensure our doors are open to
ALL. We believe a healthy community starts here.
We are “that place” that so many call their “second home”. Our volunteers
commit thousands of hours to ensure our YMCA is well run. We thank our
Board of Directors, and our hundreds of program and philanthropy volunteers who make this happen. We would like to take this opportunity to also
thank our incredibly talented and dedicated staff team.
We are so much more than a “gym and a pool”, but we need these tools to
create the place for all of us to come together as a community. In 2015 we
invested in a number of capital items to ensure our YMCA asset remains
strong.
L-R Catherine Deplaedt & Diana Deakin-Thomas
Daily, we welcome many collaborative partners who support many individuals in our community making a difference in the lives of those who
require help. We celebrate all the work that these partners do and appreciate working with each and every one of them! We are proud of the
work we collectively do in our communities and of the impact we are having; be it within our four walls at Park Street; at camp; or a Y on the Fly
location. We are honoured to fill this role in the community and take great pride in the work we do. We trust that you will enjoy this 2015
Impact Report and the stories within. We look forward to working with ALL of you to continue to build and support this wonderful community
of Brockville and Area. It starts here!

Family starts here...
As a single parent of five children ranging in ages 1-16 years, I
want to be like other parents and give my kids everything. But
as a sole support parent it’s not possible. My three older girls
began at the YMCA with the local community outreach
program “Y on the Fly”. Through this program I learned that
the children could receive memberships through the YMCA and
the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Program. They have participated
in many programs such as swimming, running club and camp to
name a few. They have since volunteered in programs
including Youth Night (Tomorrow’s Leaders Today) and at the
Bartholomew Street Community Hub.
My son, Ryan is so eager to go to camp this summer. He too is a
member and enjoys karate and swim lessons. Initially he was
afraid of the pool and now he swims across the pool and has so
much fun! A true sense of accomplishment. Ryan has made
many great friends at the YMCA Before and After School
program.
L-R: Ian McFall with Samantha Bronkhorst, Reanna Bronkhorst & Ryan Bronkhorst,
Catherine Deplaedt, Mary Mansworth & Sarah Hurst
My youngest, Samantha, is cared for in the YMCA Infant Child
Care. She had separation anxiety to say the least when she first
started at the Y but within a week she was happy come play
with her new little friends!
Thank you to all the donors and the fundraising committee for
making this possible for so many families not just mine.
~Sarah Hurst
Belonging starts here...
The YMCA gives me a sense of
community and belonging.
Two years ago I felt isolated and was looking for a place to belong.
I thought I would try the YMCA. I now have a place I call my own.
The YMCA gives me a sense of community and belonging.
As an added bonus, I even lost 50 lbs throughout my journey.
I have always felt supported here, Jenni, Louise and Tony have
helped guide me, I truly thank the YMCA for every thing everyone
has done for me.
If you're looking for a place to get healthy and feel a sense of
community, then the YMCA is where you need to be!
~Meredith Armstrong
L-R: Mel Shaw, Meredith Armstrong & Heike Grill
Friendships start here...
I've developed friendships here;
I know I have someone to turn to
when I need someone to talk to.
Margaret and I started in Charlottetown, PEI, which is where I
retired. I then moved to Bobcaygeon and began a two year
journey finding the next place to call home.
After a weekend trip to Brockville I was charmed and moved
here shortly after.
I joined the YMCA 4 1/2 years ago now, when I relocated to this
beautiful community. When I started I did a Y Connect with one
of the trainers, Desirae. I began at a weight of 245 lbs and am
now 185 lbs, and most importantly I was able to reduce some of
the medication I was taking.
Karen greets me every morning. Tina addresses my concerns
promptly when something isn't working. All of the staff here are
phenomenal.
I've developed friendships here; I know I have someone to turn
to when I need someone to talk to. The YMCA has been great to
me. I am excited for what's to come.
~Jim Lefebvre
Partnerships start here...
SENS Day at YMCA Brown’s Bay Camp July 2015
Jane Fullerton, the Big Brothers Big Sisters Team & YMCA Volunteers
At the YMCA we believe strongly that together we can build a healthier community. A recent chat with Jane Fullarton of Big Brothers/
Big Sisters comes to mind where Jane reminds us that “Bigs and Littles” come to the YMCA to enjoy a shared experience. She tells us
“the sharing of the YMCA resource allows for their special friendships to thrive as they work out and play together.” The BB/BS team
participates in our Wednesday community lunch program where proceeds are raised to welcome those not able to participate on their
own. Jane shares our sentiment; “No one organization can do it alone”…our YMCA is proud to partner with many community partners…
together we can impact so many in our communities.
Teamwork starts here...
Whether it’s a
shared challenge
or leading others
to meet a specific
goal, the YMCA is
here to facilitate
action…
Making a difference starts here...
Volunteer co-chairs of our YMCA Strong Kids campaign:
Mary Mansworth and Ian McFall value the opportunity to
make a difference. Together with their team of 122
philanthropy volunteers who work tirelessly to raise the
resources that enable the YMCA to open our doors for ALL.
Every child deserves a chance to experience fun in the water, to meet new friends at camp, to feel safe at the YMCA;
all youth deserve a chance to develop their leadership
skills, to “hang out” at the Y, or to become a lifeguard or
swim instructor; all ages, all stages and all abilities deserve
the opportunity to grow in spirit, mind and body at the
YMCA. The $368,529 raised* from our 387 supporters in
2015 has gone a very long way to support a variety of
programs and the 3,473 individuals we were able to
welcome to YMCA programs throughout the year. There
are so many ways to be involved in the YMCA.
Engagement is key to building our healthy community.
