2015 are now in full swing and District
Councils are urging local traders to apply
FICTION
Three well-known authors have new novels out this month. The everpopular Santa Montefiore sticks to her well-trodden path of stories
about love and secrets in Songs of Love and War. Equally, Philippa
Gregory continues her fascination with the Tudor period with The
Taming of The Queen about Henry VIII’s last wife, Kateryn (sic) Parr.
Pat Barker, the Booker-winning author of the celebrated WWI trilogy
Regeneration, turns for the first time to WWII in Noonday, continuing
the story of the characters in Life Class and Toby’s Room. Who can
forget the Millennium trilogy by Stieg Larsson, which began with
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? Larsson died before the trilogy was
published, and now David Lagercrantz has written a continuation
of the series, The Girl in the Spider’s Web. Will it have the same
phenomenal success?
Now in their second year, the awards celebrate local retail
groups up and down the country who are working together
to support their high streets and make them even better
places to shop and socialize.
£80,000 prize pot
This year, not only will the entrants vie for the best in
category awards, but they will also benefit from a share of
an £80,000 prize pot.
Nominations for this year’s awards will run until 1
September then entries will be judged by members of the
Future High Streets Forum, drawn from industry leaders
from across retail, property and business.
They will be looking for the nation’s best high streets across
seven categories:

NON-FICTION
There are lots of very serious history books this month as well as a
number of new cookery books; there will be plenty more of both in
the coming months! Other books to catch our eye include A House
In St John’s Wood by Matthew Spender, an intimate portrait of
Stephen Spender’s complex life written by his son; The Princess’s
Garden by Vanessa Berridge, a tangled tale of royal intrigue,
scandal and determination in the Georgian court which draws us
into the politically-charged world of garden design; and, on a much
lighter note, Word Play by Gyles Brandreth, which, as the subtitle
says, is a cornucopia of puns, anagrams and other curiosities of the
English language! We also hope to have some fascinating country
books, including Game Shooting: An Illustrated History by David
S D Jones, and A Year on the Moor by Tarquin Millington-Drake,
a photographic account of life on and around a grouse moor through
the seasons.
DIARIES AND CALENDARS FOR 2016
To our usual selection we have added a lovely fold-out Emily Sutton
calendar with pictures of Victorian crockery that have already been
popular on greetings cards.
TEENAGE AND CHILDREN’S
What to read in the holidays? For teenagers, we suggest Running
Girl by Simon Mason, a murder mystery for fans of Sherlock that will
keep you guessing right up to its stunning conclusion. For younger
readers (7+), there’s Dindy and the Elephant by Elizabeth Laird, a
beautifully-written story set in 1940s India about a young English girl
faced with leaving the only home she has ever known. And for really
young readers, we like Albert and Little Henry by Jez Alborough,
the perfect picture book for a family preparing for a new addition.

Two chaps who know their wheat from their chaff
The Fabulous Baker Brothers are set
to show how to transform a humble
hectare into beautiful bread at
the Big Feastival from August 28 to 30.
The TV celebs are hosting children’s
workshops at the three-day music and
food festival presented by Blur bassist
and cheesemaker Alex James at his
Kingham farm with chum chef Jamie
Oliver.
Henry Herbert, a butcher and chef, and baker brother
Tom, planted 20mx10m wheat and some rye at Alex’s
farm on a cold day in March. The crop was set to ripen
this month so the charismatic twosome can demonstrate
the ‘Field to Fork’ concept.
“We’re going to take 20 kids at a time at our Feastival
sessions. They’ll see exactly what wheat looks and feels
like and be told about it, the soil and how it grows by an
expert from Cirencester’s Royal Agricultural University.
Then they will mill harvested wheat into flour with
Matthews Flour Millers. They’ll see flour is coarse when
first milled, which makes a wholewheat loaf for
instance, but when you mill it three times, it’s smoother
for white and brown bread.
“Then they’ll bring the flour into our next-door tent.
Adding water, salt and yeast, we’re going to make a
dough and bake flatbread as a pizza base.”
With the seeds of the process firmly germinating in
their minds, youngsters up to about 15 years will
choose from a variety of toppings for their pizzas.
Henry, who runs regular cookery schools for children
and adults, enthused: “The other side of this is it’s fun –
there will be flour everywhere and lots of laughs. The
kids will be really proud of their achievements, get a
photo and badge and leave as happy as punch.”
“It’s really important for kids to have an understanding of
where food comes from – that milk doesn’t come from a
bottle for example,” said Henry, who specialises in
handmade bread with Tom in their three Cotswolds’
Hobbs House Bakeries. “When you show kids the truth,
time and time again they take it on and don’t freak out.
When they’re driving past crops in the fields they
appreciate they’re part of an agricultural cycle.
The hands-on approach has reaped rewards with
Henry’s own daughter. “Because we pick vegetables
together from the garden and cook them, she will eat
them,” he explained. “She doesn’t just have them
presented to her and think ‘that’s that nasty old
vegetable’. It’s about building those bridges.”

The brothers will also promote their artisanal approach
with a food stand selling their signature bread – the
award-winning 60-year-old sourdough. Henry said: “It’s
a celebration of cheese and bread as we’ll be making
cheese toasties – fried in butter so they’re crispy on the
outside but melt in the middle – with a variety of
different fillings such as smoky brisket and ham.
In collaboration with Alex, we’ll be using his Farleigh
Wallop goat cheese, for a one-off Feastival toastie.” The
cheese comes from the Evenlode Partnership, between
Alex and cheese expert Juliet Harbutt from
neighbouring village, Churchill. Added flavour comes
from the thyme sprig pressed into the top of it.”
The dynamic duo will also use Guernsey Goddess
cheese. “It’s like Camembert and the rind is washed in
Somerset cider brandy,” drooled Henry. “It’s a strong
heady, gooey cheese, which we’ll bake in a pot with
rosemary and garlic and serve with sourdough soldiers
like a fondue.” The stalls will be in full swing from 11am
to 11pm .
Education and enjoyment are by-words. Henry
elaborated: “People think bread is bad for them and
cheap supermarket bread is highly processed with
loads of yeast, fats and salt. It’s made really quickly
which doesn’t break down the proteins.
Our bread is better for you as it’s made much slower –
even our fastest loaf takes six hours – as opposed to the
two it takes a supermarket. The gluten in the flour
breaks down much more and after eating, you don’t get
that bloated feeling. Some of our loaves take 24 hours to
make and that also develops a really great flavour.”
So why choose Feastival to spread their gospel? Henry
revealed: “Lots of festivals are just about indulgent foods
– hog roasts and donor kebabs with lots of carbs and
fats. Feastival has a real mix of ‘dirty’ foods as well as
healthy. Although a cheese toastie is about the
naughtiest thing you can eat, if it’s made with the best
ingredients it’s good for you and pretty tasty –
everything’s good in moderation. And when you’re at a
festival you’re outside, tramping round and dancing and
you need more food to keep up your energy, not just a
green diet.”
Hobbs House is based in Chipping Sodbury, with shops in
Tetbury and Nailsworth. Despite the Cirencester shop closing,
plans are afoot to re-launch in a bigger retail space –
meanwhile the brothers’ bread is currently sold in The Market
Garden, Cirencester.
The Fabulous Baker Brothers featured on A Bite of Britain on
Discovery’s TLC channel shown in the UK from March and
aired in 220 countries. The brothers toured the country finding
the greatest food producers and vented their sibling rivalry in
cook-offs. They hope the series will be re-commissioned.

ball in as many fun and inventive ways as possible in the buildup to the Rugby World Cup in September, each pass raising
vital funds for local charity Kate’s Home Nursing.

Under-20s World Cup winner Elliott Stooke, coached at SRFC
as a lad, returned to the club with his Gloucester Rugby
teammates Tom Savage, Mark Atkinson and Jacob Rowan. The
guys were joined by ex-Stow player and BBC’s Countryfile
Adam Henson, with sheep dog Peg, together with a Who’s
Who of local professionals - all backing Kate’s. The charity has
to find £250,000 a year to continue caring for local people who
are terminally ill in their own homes.
#CarryMeHomeKate campaign chairman Sean Clarke said: “We
want wild and wacky ideas which involve as many people as
possible. It can be any individual or club – from beekeepers to
wine drinkers, groups of all ages, and public bodies such as
firefighters and council workers – and they can be as
imaginative as possible!” Local primary and secondary schools
are encouraged to come up with novel ideas to pass the ball.
Other eager fundraisers are already on the ball - giant diggers
have daringly passed the ball at Cotswold Hill Stone & Masonry;
Stow Mayor Mike Curtis tossed it to shopkeepers at the Stow
Cotswold Festival and Sheila Price’s ballerinas daintily
exchanged it at Bourton Leisure Centre.

Each pass is ‘clicked’, and the final total will be revealed at
Stow RFC’s Family Fun Day on September 6. The well-travelled
ball, signed by celebrities along the way, will then be auctioned
at a special Stow RFC event on September 18.
The iconic ball was specially made by Gilbert Rugby, World Cup
suppliers. It features the #CarryMeHomeKate slogan, logos of
the rugby club and the campaign’s main sponsors and is edged
in Kate’s pink and blue colours.

Kate’s Home Nursing played a vital part in the life of Sean
Clarke, whose father Christopher received palliative care for
six weeks before passing away in 1998. “A lot of people
aren’t aware of these nurses before it’s too late,” stressed
Sean. “But they offer a safety net and a warm embrace.
“They don’t just do wonderful work looking after the patient
but also support the family, taking a huge weight off your
shoulders with practical and emotional help, without being in
your face. With Dad, they typically came in twice a day and
then, closer to the end, they were there for longer. If you
know your loved one is getting the best care, and it’s from a
local charity, that takes off an awful lot of pressure too.”

Sean and his brother Simon run Christopher Clarke Antiques
in Stow and have raised funds for Kate’s Home Nursing for a
decade, together with Manfred Schotten Antiques in
Burford. “Most of our rugby club members come from the
Stow, Moreton, Bourton, Northleach, Winchcombe and
Burford area, which is also covered by Kate’s, so supporting it
has a natural symmetry,” said Sean. “This time I wanted to
unite all the club’s sections and past members in one major
fun event.”

one to be auctioned and the other for permanent display at
Stow RFC.

Cotswold CAB Need More
Volunteers
Cotswold District Citizens Advice have now been
open in Moreton for three and a half months and
have helped 91 households resolve their problems in
that time. The busiest enquiry areas have been
money, benefit and employment problems.
The CAB is looking for people who can spare 8 hours a week to join their advisertraining course on the 23 September. The training is very comprehensive and
travel expenses are paid.

REPORTS
Police Report (PSO Fiona Walsh): 1) Crime figures year:year
are generally down, with goo intelligence from the public.
PSOs attendance at the weekly market appears to have
contained pick-pocketing. 2) BOBS scheme is effective. 3) 5
PSOs are currently working north of Stow.

Cotswold District Council (AC): 1) The revised Local Plan
Development Scheme (LDP) -2020 Vision is open for Public
Consultation. This is a long-term plan and it is important that

2) Planning – application for 2 houses on the scrapyard N of
MIM requires the removal of a development restraining order.
3) MIM Development Plan- Batsford Parish has been invited
to join the team.
Cotswold District Council (RD): 1) Parking Consultation - it is
important for people to have their say. 2) CDC Environment
Award of £2K per Cllr – available for appropriate projects.
Glos County Council (NM absent): Following the Transport
survey the bus route is being extended to the Fire College – it
is important that the public use it – or lose it!

COMMITTEE REPORTS
PLANNING (AC) 1) White House Surgery application for 4 flats,
with 4 parking spaces. 2) Ongoing work on The Bell – a
reminder that the building is listed.
RESILIENCE (ML) 1) Attended the Qtrly GMTF meeting in
Churchdown and recommends that MTC joins GMTF. 2)
Meeting with Police re speed in London Road – considering
hard landscaping to reduce speed. Highways support
extending the 30MPH limit to beyond the Business Village and
Moreton Park. This is also an opportunity to improve this
entrance into MIM – GCC would split the cost 50/50 with MTC.
3) ideas will be considered (using MUGA funding due from
S106 funds) for a zebra crossing from the footpath on London
Road to the entrance to the Recreation Ground, with hard
landscaping to increase awareness and reduce traffic speed.
MTC agreed to support GCCllr NM to progress these ideas.
Clerk will investigate & request quotes, etc for VAS signs along
London Rd (subject to quotes) and providing 30MPH stickers to
all households along London Road.
FLOOD MEETING (NM report): 1) Moreton East Flood
Measures. The Flood Alleviation Board have approved a joint
project encompassing Evenlode Rd, Croft Holm and past
allotments to re-profile the river bed to speed up flow of water
off the area – AJ questioned the possibility of water backing
up as there is nowhere for this flow to go. MTC have been
asked to support the project – AC expressed concern about
managing expectations as MTC do not have a budget for this
project. MTC will wait for the presentation by Laurence King
(CDC Engineer) and assess the proposal.

Many residents will have received a letter from
Gloucestershire County Council with regards to a
review of parking in the town.
The Town Council would like to make it clear that
this review will not include or affect the Town
Council owned car park in the town centre.
The Town Council will fully engage with the County
Council to support the best interests of the town of
Moreton in Marsh and would strongly encourage all
residents and users of the town to voice their
opinions to this review.
The Town Council fully acknowledges the concerns
about parking in the whole of our community, and
will work for the right solution for our land and
Moreton in Marsh.

Cotswold District Council is inviting local
residents to have their say on proposals
that it says will reduce its running costs
without the need to cut services.
The council is working with the local authorities at Cheltenham,
Forest of Dean and West Oxfordshire on the 2020 Vision
Programme, which is aiming to reduce the cost of providing
services through sharing management and staff and making
better use of IT. At the same time, the council says it would
maintain the full range of services it currently provides and
would also retain its own distinct identity.
Elected Cotswold district councillors would continue to decide
what is best for residents they serve, and also ensure
continuing local access to services.
As a result of the work on 2020 Vision so far, the partner
councils will be building on their shared HR, finance and
payroll shared service which has already been established,
and are proposing initially, that the following services would
also be shared:

young people to participate in democracy and
have an experience of voting for issues they
feel passionate about. The initiative runs from
the 12th August until the 9th October 2015
and our target is a voter turnout of 1 million.”

ABOUT UKYP
THE UK YOUTH PARLIAMENT ENABLES YOUNG PEOPLE TO USE
THEIR ENERGY AND PASSION TO CHANGE THE WORLD FOR
THE BETTER.
Run by young people for young people, UKYP provides
opportunities for 11-18 year-olds to use their voice in creative
ways to bring about social change.
HOW DOES THE UKYP WORK?
The UK Youth Parliament has over 364 representatives (369
seats for elected Members of Youth Parliament).
MYPs are usually elected in annual youth elections throughout
the UK. Any young person aged 11-18 can stand or vote. In the
past two years one million young people have voted in UK
Youth Parliament elections.
Once elected MYPs organise events and projects, run
campaigns and influence decision makers on the issues which
matter most to young people. All MYPs have the opportunity
to meet once a year at the UK Youth Parliament Annual
Sitting.

CAN I BE INVOLVED WITHOUT STANDING AS A CANDIDATE?
Yes absolutely. There are a range of things you can do, e.g.
support our campaigns, debate in our online forums, and take
part in consultations.
The public consultation closed in March 2015 with 86
representations received from a variety of local stakeholders.
These have been reviewed and used to populate a
Consultation Response Report, which summaries the key
points and outlines how these points will be considered
when updating the LTP. This report will be published shortly.
The broad messages from the public consultation include:
 The importance of understanding the needs of all
transport users;
 The role of transport as an enabler for economic growth,
whilst managing congestion and journey time reliability;
 The need to seek mitigation measures to maintain a
functioning transport network, which offset the projected
increase in transport demand derived from planned
development; and
 The priority for delivering a safe and sustainable transport
system, integrating all modes, within the financial limits
that exist.
A number of Transport studies have been commissioned to
consider the role of different types of transport as part of the
wider transport network. These consider the role of: Bus,
Rail, Cycling, Freight and Thinktravel (Gloucestershire's
smarter choices programme). To include these studies and to
respond to the representations made through the public
consultation, there will be a further round of public
consultation based on the draft plan.
Officers are working to finalise the LTP by August with a
report going to Cabinet on September 30th and Council on
the 11th November. Public questions can be asked at both
meetings.
Cotswold Councillors have identified a number of failings in
the Draft plan, which include amongst other points:




The plan does not recognise the impact of traffic
congestion and how it is inhibiting economic growth,
especially in the important tourism sector.
Lack of consideration for the cumulative impact of
development on the transport infrastructure and in
particular on the A429 Fosseway.
It doesn’t address the current poor state of roads on the
North Cotswolds
The cost of parking is detrimental to business.
Public transport in this area is too expensive and too
infrequent to be a viable alternative to using a car, so any
future planning needs to recognise that additional
housing will generate considerable additional traffic.
Aware that some members of the public are keenly
interested in the outcomes of this Review and Plan,
councillors are encouraging the public to take an interest in
developments over the next few months, with a view to
commenting and possibly affecting the results.
A new Local Transport Plan will be in place by May 2016, to
run until 2031.

Cotswold District Council approve
new surgery in Stow
Cotswold District Council’s Planning Committee have
approved an application for a new doctor’s surgery in Stowon-the-Wold, which should bring an end to concerns about the
future provision of medical facilities in the town.
The surgery and associated parking will be located at the
brownfield site of Tall Trees in Oddington Road, within Stow’s
building line. It was approved subject to amendments to the
layout, parking, landscaping and detailed design. At the same
meeting, the Committee rejected an alternative application
for a primary health care centre on a greenfield site off
Maugersbury Road, which also included the erection of five
new residential units.
Commenting on the approved Tall Trees application, Cllr Sue
Jepson, CDC’s Cabinet Member for Planning and Housing, said:
“I am very pleased that local residents in Stow can now look
forward to seeing the establishment of a modern new surgery
to serve the needs of the town. Patients will now be able to
benefit from a larger surgery with adequate car parking.
“Both the sites we considered fell within the Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty, but most of the Committee felt
that the Tall Trees proposal was less intrusive than the
Maugersbury Road option, especially because the latter also
involved the erection of five houses.”
Transport for an ageing
rural society

Viable alternative transport options to the
car is important for the health and wellbeing
of an ageing population.
There are now more than 200 centenarians driving on UK
roads – a statistic drawn from a new report, called ‘The Future
of Transport in an Ageing Society’, by the International
Longevity Centre and the charity Age UK.
Across England only 30% of the 65+ age group can be called
regular (i.e. at least weekly) users of public transport; 32% of
them never use public transport. Its use peaks for those in
their 70s, before falling off again for older age groups (an
unfortunate phrase, perhaps! Ed). This probably reflects higher
car use among those still in their 60s and reducing travel
within the 80 plus age group.
Disaggregation of this data indicates that older people living in
rural areas are half as likely as those in urban areas to be using
public transport on a regular basis; 18% of older people living
in rural areas said they did not use public transport because
none was available. Only 2% gave this answer in urban areas.
Some of the report's most telling findings are for older people
who have no access to their own private transport and have
difficulty in walking. More than half this group don't use public
transport, surely indicating that the needs of a core group are
not being met.
A sizeable share of the elderly population struggle to access
healthcare facilities. Scaled up, this implies that 1,450,000
million over 65s find it difficult to travel to hospital and
630,000 find it difficult to travel to their GP. They are more
likely to be very elderly, in poor health and on low incomes –
and they are also more likely not to hold a free bus pass.
The two most common reasons given by older people for not
using public transport are that it is inconvenient or doesn't go
where they want to go. Of course, some of this may be based
on perceptions and the convenience of a car. However, many
of those without a car still cite inconvenience and driving is
easily the most common transport mode for older people.
(There is a growing proportion of older women drivers.)
Reasons for giving up driving are largely concerned with
deteriorating health or worsening vision. The report draws
the fairly obvious conclusion that viable alternative transport
options are needed for when driving becomes difficult, and
refers to new technologies such as auto-parking and rear view
cameras, which might help those with limited upper-body
mobility to drive for longer.
The report also looks at walking and cycling, citing its health
benefits. Walking and cycling groups aimed at older people
can broaden the appeal of these activities. For those with less
stamina, the availability of public benches can be a key to
enable walking. One specific suggestion is to allow pedestrians
longer at pelican crossings, which are generally calibrated
based on pedestrians crossing at 2.7 miles per hour - faster
than the average walking speed of older people.

(9/07/15) I’m looking for archive information on Gerald
Clifton (my uncle – married my mother Marys’ sister Vera
Page)they had a son Martin (my cousin) who became a
Doctor. Gerald Clifton was a prominent citizen in the early
60’s.
Any information I could find would be wonderful. I live in
South Africa and am very far away from my whole family and

Waterloo by numbers
(8/07/15) Referring to the correspondence in respect of the
Waterloo celebration, the contributor asserted that ‘we’ won
the Battle of Waterloo. By ‘we’ I presume she means the
British Army.
In terms of numbers the Allied army consisted of the
following (from Wikipedia) – ‘His (Wellington) troops
consisted of 67,000 men: 50,000 infantry, 11,000 cavalry, and
6,000 artillery with 150 guns. Of these, 25,000 were British
(including a disproportionate number of Irishmen), with
another 6,000 from the King's German Legion. All of
the British Army troops were regular soldiers but only 7,000
of them were Peninsular War veterans. In addition, there
were 17,000 Dutch and Belgian troops, 11,000 from Hanover,
6,000 from Brunswick, and 3,000 from Nassau.
In addition, towards the latter part of the battle Marshal
Blucher arrived with 50,000 Prussians, to save the day. So
there would be 76,000 Germans,17,000 Dutch and 25,000
British in the Allied army. There were 70,000 French troops.

(9/07/15) Dear Sirs,
I won't be able to attend the drop-in sessions but I have some
suggestions:
1. BUS BAYS BY REDESDALE HALL
Last Sunday there were five cars parked there which would
prevent a tourist bus from using the space. Within a few yards
there were plenty of vacant spaces;
9 spaces in the first section of the car park between
Corders Lane and the pedestrian lights.
2 spaces outside Tesco
- Only one car parked on the offside of the service road
between Victoria Tea Room and the war memorial.
Also, the signage on the road adjacent to the bus bay needs
revising and possibly being separated by a low wall. On that
short stretch of road you can regularly witness
motorists driving on the wrong side of the road or parked on
the car park side. A heavy fine for bus bay parking and regular
monitoring would seem appropriate.
2. LAND IN FRONT OF FIRE COLLEGE
I believe this was recently offered to the town council. Here's
a chance to kill two birds with one stone by creating a car park
for town centre workers/long stayers and getting Pulhams to
extend their bus service to a new terminus at the fire college.
This bus service would also benefit Moreton residents east of
the railway bridge who'd be encouraged to leave their cars at
home when coming to the high street.
3. METERED PARKING
Allow two hours free (only with a timed ticket from machine)
and then £1 per hour. This gives plenty of time for shopping
and coffee with friends and is not too expensive if you need
just a bit longer.
4. RESIDENTS PERMITS
Probably essential but should not include businesses.

SWAN CLOSE
I have raised this before with no success. I live at No.24 on a
bend halfway up the close and can't understand why parking
is allowed on the bend. On market day vans, lorries and
ambulances have to bump up the kerb outside No.10 to pass
cars parked opposite and this will eventually break up the
pavement. The owner of No.10 also has to reverse out of his
drive partly on the pavement. You may think that ambulances
are not regular traffic in Swan Close but it's not called "God's
Waiting Room" for nothing.
Also on market day we try to avoid setting our homes on fire
because the fire hydrant sign is always obscured by cars
parked outside my house.

Emma’s Trust was founded in 2005
following the sudden and tragic death of
18 year-old Emma Curtis-Smith. Emma
had been an asthma sufferer from an
early age but never found it debilitating.
She was having difficulty breathing on the
day, and suffered a collapsed lung leading
to a major heart attack (spontaneous tension pneumothorax).
Emma was seen immediately by medics and rushed to Frimley Park
hospital where she was resuscitated but sadly lost her fight three
days later on Friday 24 June.
Emma was a bright, cheerful and beautiful young woman who went
about her life with verve and enthusiasm. She had been a student
at Chipping Norton School and was studying Sports Science at
college in Henley-in-Arden. Emma worked in the community as a
lifeguard at the local outdoor pool, teaching children to swim. As
a member of Chipping Norton School of Dance for over 10 years
she choreographed a number of children’s shows at The Chipping
Norton Theatre and undertook a Sports Leaders course, helping to
organise numerous festivals for young people.
Since inception, Emma’s Trust has awarded
over £100,000 to more than 9,000 local young
people and organisations that, like Emma, have
a passion for sports and performing arts
2015 will see the Trust brought to an end, and in true Emma’s
Trust style, we aim to go out with a bang, celebrating with one last
festival!

Hosted by Taste of the Country, Shipston’s top quality
provider of local produce and handmade food, will be
unveiling their new shop and expanded product range and
free hot and cold tastings as well as selling snacks, drinks
and lunches throughout the festival.
This year’s event kicks off on Friday 18th September with
the Shipston Beer Festival, hosted by Shipston Rugby Club,
and features a unique ‘Taste Trail’ on the 19th and the main
Food Festival from 10am to 4pm on Sunday 20th. This will
feature over 40 stalls from businesses in the Cotswolds,
Stour Valley and West Oxfordshire featuring locally
produced artisan foods, beers and hot food. Many Shipston
businesses will be open and local wine retailer, Edward
Sheldons, will be offering wine tastings and cellar tours.
Exciting Events Our 14th Century Church in South Warwickshire is staging a show-stopper,
roof-raiser of a weekend to raise money for vital repairs to the roof.
St George’s Church in Brailes is holding a four-day flower-festival in August
with more than a million flowers and concerts to bring show-stopping songs
from the shows to a medieval setting. Villagers and friends will be creating
huge flower dispays themed on stage musical hits and concerts will bring local
talent together with stars of the stage who will be contributing their time to
support the event.
The flower arranging alone will take hundreds of hours and the festival is a
unique collaboration between villagers and performers. St George’s is a large
medieval church which is known as the Cathedral of Feldon. Local flower
arranging clubs, enthusiastic amateurs of flower and song will combine their
skills to put on a show-stopper of an event. Nine years ago a flower festival at
the Church brought hundreds of visitors, many of whom had never seen the
village of Brailes before and it was a draw and a boost to local businesses. This
time the event will be bigger than ever.
Brailes, by the time of the Domesday Book, was a well-established town,
probably the third largest in Warwickshire. In the 13th century it was an
important market centre, wealth from which prompted enlargement of the
parish church. Today the village is thriving and the church is well-attended and
loved by the villagers and visitors alike.
The flowers for the festival are to be arranged by members of the parish
church, friends from other churches and members of local flower clubs. At
our last festival in 2006, many visitors commented on the excellence of the
dispays.
The parish church of St George is a magnificent Grade 1 village ‘Cathedral’
dating mainly from the 14th Century, with its 120 foot tower providing an
important landmark. The church is well known for its fine stone carvings,
heavy peal of bells, carillon and items of interest ranging from the patternbook font to its matchstick model, millenium frontal and the modern tapestry
depicting village life (featured on BBC Songs of Praise).

Some of the most handsome animals in the farming and equestrian world will be heading to Moreton
Show on Saturday, September 5th. More than 2,000 cows, horses, sheep, pigs, dogs and goats will be on
show at one of the country’s biggest one-day agricultural show.
‘This is the Olympic Games of farming and the countryside,’
said Moreton Show livestock secretary, Lynne Parkes. ‘The
livestock and animals are a huge attraction for both the
farming and non-farming visitors. They’re the heart and soul
of the show.
‘If you’ve never seen a Hereford bull having a shampoo and
blow dry - this is the place to be,’ she laughed. ‘Our livestock
classes include some of the most pampered prime beef in the
land and it’s wonderful to see them on parade. It’s a great
display of traditional farming and showcases the very best in
modern agriculture.’
The show jumping and horse showing classes include
qualifiers for the prestigious Horse of the Year Show at the
NEC in Birmingham in October and attract leading riders and
equestrian enthusiasts from all over the UK.
Head of Equestrian Classes, Liz Day said: ‘We’re looking
forward to one of our best ever years. The popularity of
equestrian sport is growing fast and there’s a real
enthusiasm for showing horses and ponies amongst people
of all ages. We have classes for almost every type of horse,
from hunters and top sport horses to Dartmoor and
Shetland ponies. The side saddle class where riders wear
traditional costumes look so elegant and all the riders and
horses are
beautifully turned
out.

LOOK UP – LOOK DOWN – LOOK BEHIND YOU!
Inside the August editions of Stow Times, Moreton Times, Bourton Times and Chipping
Norton Times are a set of numbered photographs, all taken recently, one in each of the
communities where we deliver the magazines every month. But – these are not average
picture postcard images, and you may need to look carefully!
The Challenge . . .
To identify the communities where the photos were taken. You will need to get out and about in our
stunning corner of the Cotswolds and look for something or somewhere which is on our doorstep – and
which you might not have noticed before! And EVERYONE can have a go!
There will be LOTS of winners
for the most correct answers of course, and for the
youngest/oldest entrant, the best family entry, the best
local business entry, the best pub or club entry and more.
Timetable
The competition will run for the whole of August. Answer
Sheets must be returned to the Editor by Wednesday
2nd September 2015. . . . Please don’t be late as late
entries won’t count! The winners will be notified early in
September and sent a voucher to claim their prize. An
A-Z list of all the prizes is overleaf, and with no specific first
prize, the first winner has first choice.
NB. Only 2 of the Cotswold Times team know where the
photographs were taken – so everyone can join in!
That includes our contributors, our deliverers and editorial
team, and everyone who has contributed prizes too. Noone needs to be left out! So,

There are 6 pages of numbered photos in every copy of Stow Times, Moreton Times, Bourton Times & Chipping Norton
Times. The answer sheet over the page has numbered boxes - write down the name of the community (eg. Naunton)
against the correct number, and send the answer sheet or a copy into the Editor to arrive before 2nd September, either via

Every photograph was taken in the last few weeks, within the 30 mph signs for each community, from public land/a road,
pavement or footpath, and not on private land. All the items photographed are expected to still be visible, without ladders,

The Rotary Club of the North Cotswolds
Club celebrates 50 Years of Service On a glorious June evening at the Hyde Barn Hotel, ninety members and friends of North Cotswolds Rotary Club met to celebrate their fiftieth anniversary. Dinner was attended by national President Peter King, District Governor Martyn Harwood, representatives from other clubs, past members, and widows of former members. Following a welcome drink, photographs were taken as a memento of the occasion. Guests were entertained by master magician Sam Strange who dazzled everyone. After dinner and speeches, a beautifully decorated birthday cake was served with coffee, while t he m ain room was p repared for live music and dancing to The Occasional Big Band. It was a splendid evening and the club looks forward to another 50 years of service in the community. A display of photographs summarised the history of the club with copies of original documentation and pictures of founder th

Geoff Matthews earned
his wings!
Last month we carried a short piece on Geoff Matthews, who
was booked to do a Wing Walk on 16th July. You may not
recall all the details - but Geoff does!
In 2013 Geoff lost his wife to Alzheimer’s and Cancer. All her
life she had been a big charity supporter and he wanted to
continue the support. So last year, aged 82, he did a sky dive,
and with local support from residents in Moreton in Marsh,
raised £2,850 for the Alzheimer’s charity.
This year, with the support of his daughter Caroline, Geoff
decided to go Wing walking, raising money for Save the
Children. He was scheduled to do the Wing Walk on 16 July
2015 at Gloucestershire airport – subject to the weather
being up to it! Geoff was up to it – and here are some photos
to prove it!

At long last Robert Plant seems to have completely
settled into the skin of a solo artist – it’s taken a
while! In the 35 years since the demise of Led
Zeppelin, the singer with the most recognisable voice
in rock has unapologetically indulged himself in
dalliances with a succession of different musical
genres, drawing from the ubiquitous presence of the
delta blues to the African rhythms from whence they
derived, and from country to bluegrass and back
again via folk to the blues.
Indeed, Westonbirt Arboretum provided the perfect
backdrop for Plant’s return to the Cotswolds as part of
the Forestry Live series, its wide variety of plant and
tree species (many beautifully lit) perfectly mirroring
the singer’s eclectic, organic repertoire on this night.
Having previously eschewed the delights of his Led Zep
back catalogue, Plant now plunders it freely, adding
new arrangements and hitherto unheard
instrumentation, or stripping songs bare for ultimate
effect. From the moment he barrelled into a gritty
version of The Wanton Song from Zeppelin’s ‘Physical
Graffiti’, it was clear that recent problems he’d had
with his trademark voice had completely dissipated as
he launched into a series of goosebump-inducing vocal
acrobatics.
A rollercoaster ride through newer solo songs including
‘Rainbow’, ‘Turn It Up’ and ‘Little Maggie’- all destined
to be classics in due course – also took in versions of
songs from his Zeppelin days that are now as familiar as
a favourite pair of old trainers. ‘Black Dog’ sat
comfortably alongside the vintage bluesy refrain of
‘Spoonful’, while ‘Trampled Under Foot’, a haunting
version of ‘The Rain Song’ (complete with more than a
few drops from above!) ‘Dazed and Confused’, ‘The
Lemon Song’ and, of course, ‘WholeLotta Love’ segued
seamlessly with standards such as ‘No Place to Go’ , ‘I
Just Want to Make Love to You’ and ‘Who Do You
Love’. In some instances these segues were so subtle
that the songs almost seemed to have been written
together as one.
This is a man content in his work, doing what he wants
whether you like it or not. But, if the delirious
Westonbirt audience, reclining in the balmy Cotswold
evening air, is anything to go by, it seems he can do no
wrong. Whatever he does he now has an uncanny
knack of keeping himself and his audience on their toes
and happy. Continuing to move forward on his musical
journey, Robert Plant is now clearly more than
comfortable to shoot the occasional backward glance –
long may he continue.

“My, my what a term!” as Mole would say. I have just enjoyed
a performance of the musical play, ‘Wind in the Willows’,
produced by Mrs. Dodgson-Hatto and performed by all the
children in Key Stage 2 at a dress rehearsal for the rest of the
school. There were two further excellent evening
performances. Singing, scampering, acting, all very engaging
and a wonderful achievement.
Class 1 were excited by their visit to Warwick Castle which led to some
good work. They also invited grandparents to a tea party to talk about
what childhood was like in their day.
Class 2 worked with a potter at the Court Barn Museum,
learning how to throw a pot and to make a decorated tile.
They also gave a charming assembly around the theme of
The Beach, including reading their own poems and showing stunning
photographs of the sculptures they made in the forest area.
All the classes had a session in the Life Caravan, theatrical
in concept, learning according to their age about various health,
hygiene, friendship and decision making issues. The Midlands Air
Ambulance has featured in the children’s charity work this term and
they raised £2000 in sponsorship from the Bounceathon.
Class 4 had a very hi-tech assembly showing their clever and amusing
films about friendship and product advertisements.
The school has taken part in many sporting activities ranging from
archery to floorball and they performed brilliantly in a mini tennis
tournament, a mountain biking competition where they won a gold
nd
medal, and gained 2 place in tag rugby and athletics tournaments.

The summer term at Condicote has
been great fun with lots of outdoor
play including our climbing frame,
sand and water play, role play,
growing vegetables and lots of racing
and chasing. We have said farewell and good luck to 14 children who are
moving on to various local schools and are looking forward to a new year
and welcoming new children. If you would like to join us please arrange
to visit us soon. Many of our families get to know the group by joining
our Toddler Group first. We meet from 10 – 12 on Fridays during term
time and welcome children from birth to school age and their parents /

Catholic Primary School
Class 1 have enjoyed the sunshine and ‘cooling off’ with their waterthemed topic work. They visited Brandon Marsh Wetlands Centre to
explore plant and animal habitats, participating in pond dipping,
woodland art and sensory activities. The hail storm, when in the bird
hides, added to the excitement of the day!
Class 2 have been learning about ‘Heroes and Cities’. Spiderman
complete with web is swinging across the ceiling, while Welsh dragons
cover the walls alongside Tower Bridge and Big Ben. A highlight was
learning about The Great Fire of London and acting out the story in
assembly. An end of term trip to All Things Wild was enjoyed by all.
Class 3 finished their year in science by visiting the Physics Lab at
Chipping Campden School. They were tasked with working out which
magnet would be best to attract a lost ring from behind a fridge! There
was an investigation in to which kind of machine (using levers) would
use the least force to move a sick elephant to the vets! Their final
session involved pretending to be the sun and all the planets, to
understand the concept of night and day.
Class 4 have been discovering the history of Chipping Campden. They
have been out sketching local buildings, researching famous people
from the past, and presenting their work imaginatively in Topic books.
In DT they have been designing and making models of storage systems
for the school headphones, so they don’t get all tangled up!
Class 5 have had a very exciting term rehearsing for our school play
‘Robin and The Sherwood Hoodies’. They delivered three performances
enjoyed by a full house of family and friends. The school choir sang at
nd
the Education Mass held at Clifton Cathedral on 2 July and we have
sold lots of copies of our CD ‘St Catharine’s Favorite Hymns’.
St Catharine’s Sports Day was a huge success! The event concluded with
year group sprints and cross country races before Dunstan were
announced House Champions, and went on to lift the 2015 trophy.
Swell School

The Year 2 children had a fun day at Sherborne School and in the
surrounding woodlands. The Reading for Pleasure Day included, reading
books from around the world and painting and activities in the woods. The
children joined pupils from several local primary schools.
The year 5 children have spent a morning at The Cotswold School
attending a technology workshop. During the morning the children
studied textiles and made animals. They went on to make parachutes for
eggs, the highlight of this activity was dropping them from a height and
seeing if they cracked. The winners of this challenge were Lucy Major and
Frankie Kelly. I am not sure if they took them home for breakfast!
The Junior class travelled to Cheltenham Music Festival and thoroughly
enjoyed listening to a string quartet and brass band, this was linked to the
BBC Ten Pieces project . The children then had the opportunity to play a
selection of orchestral instruments.
The Year 6 children have be busy selling their
handmade crafts to school friends as part of
their Enterprise project. They also baked cakes
which they sold at the village coffee morning.
The year 2 children have made delicious
Elderflower cordial which they have shared with
their class mates. They have also harvested a very fine crop of potatoes.
We send Lilly, Luisa, Niamh, Natasha and Guy our very best wishes for
their new start in September at Secondary School.

In July we celebrated the end of our school year with performances
from our Performing Arts departments: Music, Drama and Gym and
Dance. Pupils from all year groups gave superb performances to
appreciative audiences. Our Jazz Band, Back in Black spent a busy
month performing not only at school events, but also took part at
th
Stow’s 4 July celebrations and the Condicote Jazz Festival.
More celebrations took place at the school’s annual Sports Awards
which honoured the sporting achievements of teams and individuals
throughout this academic year. Cotswold School pupils have been
competing at district, county, regional and national levels in a wide
variety of sports – with several pupils representing Great Britain in
sports as diverse as equestrian eventing, fencing and even rollerhockey at the Junior Olympics in California.
As the final week of term rolled around, our Year 10 and Year 12
students took on the opportunity to gain some work experience.
Organising the work experience week is a mammoth task but hugely
important to our pupils – especially as it provides an addition to the
‘personal statements’ that are a vital component of any application
for work, college or university. The school is therefore grateful to all
the employers who have taken students on, given a little of their time
and helped inspire these young people for the future.
Over the summer our grounds, buildings and sports facilities are
available to our community with activities running throughout the
school holiday period (including Badminton, Zumba and Karate to

This month, our hopes and best wishes are with our upper school
students. We wish them ‘Good Luck!’ for their upcoming GCSE and A
Level results and bid a very fond farewell to those who are moving on

By the time you are reading this, we will be on our summer holiday,
celebrating another successful year in terms of our excellent test
results at both Key Stage 1 and 2. Perhaps, more importantly we will be
celebrating the successes in terms of our ever developing ethos and
quality of teaching.
We are looking forward to the new term which will open with a wholeschool project on the Rugby World Cup and linking this to our core
values as a School and a Country. CARE - Challenge, Amaze, Respect
and Enjoy are the buzzwords that you will hear often in the School and
these link to our national values of respect, rule of law and equality.
This initial project will link the curriculum to this global sporting event
and we hope this will provide an enjoyable start to the year.
We value both the social and emotional development of a child as
much as the academic, creative and physical journey. We use
counsellors, advisers, a mental health nurse, specialist music, French
and PE teachers and from September, a nurture hub to illustrate the

dealings in the Wild West. Audiences thrilled to see plucky Billie-Jo
Brisket take on Howling Mad Dog McNutt to save the town from the
evil clutches of mayor Tex Truman.
ISingPOP at Temple Guiting Church
Pupils made a CD of seven Christian themed high-energy pop songs
then performed them, complete with very sharp dance moves. The
church was filled with thumping bass riffs… and wonderful singing!

CHIPPING CAMPDEN SCHOOL

On Friday 26 June 2015 Chipping Campden School’s Art department put on
its annual A-Level Art Exhibition which was open to members of the
public. This year’s exhibition was particularly notable thanks to the
inclusion of selected entries from a whole-school Art competition judged
by Broadway-based artist Jeremy Houghton.
The competition tasked students to produce a piece of artwork in any
media on the theme of ‘local environment and architecture’, a subject
close to the core business of the Stow-on-the-Wold branch of property
consultants Knight Frank who sponsored the exhibition. It was a theme
equally close to the heart of royal and Olympic artist Mr Houghton, whose
latest work, ‘Glassground’ explores a local architectural structure and the
effect that light, space and motion have upon it and the local
environment. The winners of the competition
were Sophie Neville aged 12, Angus Grelak
aged 13, Ambrose Loader aged 14 and
Matthew Young aged 16, each of whom
received a limited edition print by Jeremy
Houghton, £30 worth of art equipment and a
goodie bag from Knight Frank.
Jeremy Houghton said: “I was very impressed
by the standard of art work that I judged at Chipping Campden School for
their annual summer competition. The amount of good work was
remarkable, so it’s a big pat on the back to all the teaching staff and
students. The variety, time, effort and skill that went into creating all the
pieces were a real pleasure to see. It made the judging really difficult,
which is a nice problem to have!”
Rupert Wakely, Office Head from Knight Frank said: “The evening was a
huge success due to the exceptional standard of art but more importantly
the individuality of the work produced. The Art department at Chipping
Campden School and its students should be very proud.”
The exhibition was hugely successful and the best attended that the art
department has run.

Hill End
Both Year 4 groups arrived safely back at school utterly exhausted by the two and a half days of
activities at Hill End in Oxford. In that short time they and their teachers enjoyed exploring some
of the beautiful and interesting wildlife that inhabit the fields, ponds and woods. They
encountered a badger, a fox and snakes, luckily from a safe distance, but got closer to butterflies,
newts and insects. Do you know the difference between a cricket and a grasshopper, a moth and a
butterfly, a slow worm and a lizard? The youngsters enjoyed sharing dormitories more than the
adults but all were enthusiastic about night walks, eating marshmallows toasted on the campfire,

With an enormous amount of support from the whole school community
and other willing volunteers, the Race Committee put on an absolutely
fantastic Fun Run and 10k. This event is always popular with families and
the 10k race once again attracted a field of high calibre runners. In spite
of overnight rain, the conditions were good and feedback from runners
was very positive. Tegs Jones from Witney RRC crossed the line in first
place in a time of 36.04 minutes, 30 seconds off the course record,
followed by Tim Hughes (White Horse Harriers) in second place on 39:45
and first lady Shona Crombie-Hicks in 40:19. A packed field of entrants
for the Fun Run enjoyed the safe course, with local juniors Dylan
Williams and Joshua Angus of Bourton Roadrunners coming home in first
and second place in 9:44 and 9:51 minutes respectively.

hottest day on record in July saw us leaping into the outdoor swimming pool and our thanks go to
our lifeguard George Sabin. When maths and English lessons fade into our pasts, this memory and
all that was gained will be with us forever.
Princess and Pirate Day
In the last few days of term, in the foundation unit we had an amazing Pirate & Princess Day. We
all had to dress up as either a Princess or Pirate and the outfits were brilliant. We went on a
treasure hunt to find Albert (our bear, who was lost!) we had lots of clues to work out but as
clever problem solving princesses and pirates we worked out the clues and found him, ‘yo, ho, me
hearties’!
County Swimming Finals
During July four Year 6 pupils travelled to Abingdon White Horse Leisure Centre to take part in the
County final swimming gala. There were 18 races in total but we only competed in six. We each
did an individual race in medley order, and we also did two relays. Overall we came fifth out of
eight and in between all of the nerves we had lots of fun.

progressed as winners of the North Cotswold Area to the GWT quiz semifinal held at Robinswood Country Park. Despite a terrific performance
and a close finish they were just beaten into second place. We are so
proud of their team spirit, hard work and determination and, considering
that the quiz started with 150 county schools, to have got this far is a
remarkable achievement.

Over the last two months a crew of year 3 and 4 pupils (with Mr Rhys and
their parents) have been going down to Fladbury Canoe club, to practise
their paddling with the aim of competing in a Regatta, which took place

on 27 June. On the day of the competition the children paddled hard,
which resulted in St. David’s Bell Boating team being placed in the ‘Ateam’ final… in their very first regatta! They were placed alongside 16

other boats and managed to come in 4 place and clocked up the second
fastest time of the whole event - what an amazing result! We must not
forget to mention the parents who came to watch; they had the
opportunity to take part in a parents’ race and a competitive edge was
clearly visible. Thank you to Mr Rhys for enabling St. David’s to take part
in such a unique event.

Sports Day on 9 July. The children enjoyed the day and worked
incredibly hard throughout the day to achieve the best they could for
their Houses. Congratulations must be given to Hargreaves House for
winning the Sports Day cup….three years in a row! As the school year
ends we say goodbye to all of our Year 6 pupils and we wish them well as
they move on to secondary school. Their end of term performance was
amazing – a truly wonderful way to end their time in primary school.
At the close of another busy and successful year our students continue to
make the most of the opportunities afforded to them.
The Art department took all Year 9 students beginning to study GCSE Art
and Design to the Pitt Rivers and Natural History museum in Oxford. It was
a fantastic day and the students got to explore the eccentric Pitt Rivers,
listen to a talk from the Head of Museum Education about the uses of
some of the items on display, and have a picnic lunch! Students spent time
drawing from the objects that included shrunken heads, full sized totem
poles, shadow puppets and a mummy with their little toe exposed!
A group of Year 7 students have been
working hard on a Sky ‘Living for Sport’
project. This gives students the opportunity
to work together developing their leadership,
communication, team work and planning
skills. The students led a number of Year 4's at Holy Trinity School
through a Rugby World Cup themed festival and even introduced them to
the New Zealand Haka! It was a fantastic afternoon and the result of a lot
of hard work from students who should be really proud of their efforts.
As part of our Year 12 Future Days Programme, students took part in a
Speed Interviewing session. After a presentation from recruitment
consultant Emma Goodman on effective interview skills, students were
given two 7 minute interviews by local business people. Although they
found the process quite daunting, they certainly learned a lot from the
experience and impressed their interviewers greatly.
Our Year 10 students enjoyed a week of work experience. Most of the
students were placed with businesses in Chipping Norton and the
surrounding areas and experienced work in areas as diverse as working at
Quite Interesting Limited (Q.I), Daylesford Cookery School and Chastleton
House National Trust. Thank you to all the companies that volunteered
their time enabling us to provide students with this opportunity.
The school sports teams continue to do well. The Year 7 and 9 Girls’
Rounders’ teams recently won the District tournament. At the Oxfordshire
School Games in July the Year 9 team came first and the Year 10 team took
third place in their respective competitions. The Year 8 boys’ cricket team
continues to do well in the league and will meet Burford School in the
County Cup final at the end of term.

The Governors were delighted to present their now
traditional awards in a special assembly. The children
had all been nominated by staff and governors for the
categories of HEART, HAND, MIND our three school
interlocking rings and PERSEVERANCE, one of our
values, and were presented with a certificate. Those
who had received the most nominations were awarded
blue trophies
The Summer Fair was a magnificent occasion. Everyone had a super time and one
of the highlights was the tug of war with the rugby ball passing along the line in aid
of the local charity Kate’s home nursing. We would like to say thank you to the PTFA
and staff for their hard work and fresh ideas making this evening such a wonderfully
happy community occasion. The profit on the evening was £2,412.92. This year
we took the raffle to higher levels with our fabulous grand prize draw. Thanks to
the businesses that donated prizes, particularly Lords of the Manor, Daylesford,
Lambournes and Cheltenham Racecourse, Cotswold Farm Park, Sudelely castle,
Cotswold Wildlife Park and the Sivalingam family.
We must also say thank you to Tesco for letting us sell tickets in their lobby and
other local businesses -Lambournes, Post Office, New England Coffee House, British
Legion, The Talbot that sold tickets on our behalf.
We had a surprise visit from Wendy the black Labrador guidedog puppy in training
who came to present a certificate and toy guide dog to
Lee Smith in class five. Lee visited their HQ and decided
to raise money for the charity by selling cakes in school.
He was delighted by the visit as were many of the
children who gave Wendy a stroke. Well done Lee.
The children had been practising hard for this years
talent show last Friday. We were treated to a range
of talent from entertainers who showed their circus skills, gymnasts, dancers,
musicians, and singers. Even the teachers had a little turn singing Summer Nights
from Greece in an impromptu performance. Our judges Lois, a local cellist,
Matthew, a local composer, Dr Dilys and Mrs Bernice Magson and vice Chair Dick
Glazier had a tough job. We had winners for each category and then an overall
winner EMME LUNEY who stunned us all with her gymnastic/ dance routine. Well
done to everyone who took part.
The Juniors show Scheherazade was a lovely culmination to the term for the
juniors who had been practising their songs for a few weeks. The children enjoyed
themselves so much an dsang beautifully.
Class Five had a great treat day out to West Midland safari park as part of their
African studies. Class Four had a wonderful time as part of their science studies
when they visited @bristol and Class Three enjoyed their day at Birmingham
Museum finding out about the Egyptians. Class Two have been to the Cotswold
Wildlife Park and Class One had an informative trip to The Dinosaur museum in
Oxford.
The year six children will be enjoying an evening with homemade tea cooked by
Mrs Lancaster followed by games and fun, bedtime stories with their teacher and
teddies before a sleepover in the hall. Thanks to Mrs Lancaster, Mr Cox, and Miss
Tuck.
Year 6 leavers assembly is taking place on Friday 17 July, as we celebrate their
individual achievements and memories. Congratulations must go to all year 6 pupils
on their SATs achievements this term, we are very proud of you all and wish you
success in your new school.

Play Gloucestershire believe that children need and want to take risks when they play. Our
Play Rangers aim to respond to these needs by offering children stimulating, challenging
environments for exploring and developing their abilities. In doing this, we aim to manage
the level of risk so that children are not exposed to unacceptable risks. Our experience tells
us that whilst children play outdoors they are likely to have accidents. If this causes concern
please come along and speak to us about it.
All our activities are outdoors and include den building, fires, arts and crafts, sports and a
range of playful games. We encourage children to play freely and choose what they do.
They do not have to do anything if they don’t want to.
Children will get wet, hot, cold, smelly and dirty and need to wear appropriate clothing and
footwear. Better to wear old play clothes than ruin your best!
Our Play Rangers will provide drinking water at all sessions. We promote healthy eating
and sometimes will provide free fruit.

TH LADIES OPEN – 8 JULY Naunton Downs Ladies flagship event, the Ladies Open, took place on 8th July. It was a great success attended by 96 ladies from 20 different clubs. The ladies of Naunton Downs not only baked delicious cakes for the refreshments tent but also turned out in force to help with all the other jobs. Special thanks to Victoria for providing all the lovely flowers at the front door, on the 1st and 10th tee boxes and for the prizes. July saw a return to winning ways in the League for both
Chippy’s teams, although the mighty Oxford United Legends
XI won away at Chippy in the great Charity match played on
Sunday July 5th.
Following on from “The Ashes” Youth game in the morning,
Chippy’s successful bidders for a place in the charity game
strode out to take on the “Legends” in a 25 over game.
Chippy, the players having donated an average of £27.50 to
gain selection, only collected 99 runs in total. Top scorers
were Dan Stafford 24 and Adam Wallington 21. The Legends
managed to pass Chippy’s score in their penultimate over,
with Phil Heath 21 not out and Mickey Lewis retired on 26.
Malcolm Macintosh took 3 wickets for only 4 runs in the
Chippy innings.
In League cricket, the 1st XI beat Wantage, with Jim
McGeown taking 4-24 and Dan Stafford, 38 * and Dave
Brassett 32* seeing Chippy home. The Seconds beat nine –
man Broughton , after reducing them to 58-8, the Molyneux
brothers taking 3 wickets each. Against Shrivenham, Rhys
Warner- carter scored 55 * in a losing cause.
In Youth cricket, theU17s started their season but found it
hard going against Cumnor in their first game.

Moreton in Marsh Cricket Club has
been awarded a grant to enhance
its facilities
The financial boost will enable the club to protect its ground
from bad weather and clear the water quickly to ‘Get the
Game On’, using a Bowdry Water Remover and a Stuart Canvas
protective sheet.
Waitrose, the England Team sponsor, supported the Scheme
by pledging £100 for every four or six scored across the entire
home international summer in 2014. The Waitrose donation,
together with investment from Sport England and the England
and Wales Cricket Trust, has meant that more local communities
will benefit from refurbishments to kitchens and social areas,
the purchase of covers, supporting ECB’s Get the Game On
campaign, and environmental sustainability in cricket clubs.
Martin Jones from Moreton Cricket Club said “We are really
delighted to receive this grant to upgrade our facilities. It’s
provided valuable support for what would have been an
expensive project and helps provide a long term investment to
benefit the local community here.”
Mike Gatting, ECB Cricket Partnership Ambassador, said: “We’re
passionate about creating a sustainable future for cricket clubs
and their communities across England and Wales. Small grants
to clubs like Moreton in Marsh make a huge difference to their

Chedworth 8-a-Side Festival
The winning 8-a-side squad from Slaughters United cheered on by members of our Under 9 team.
Our men retained their festival
crown as they became champions
of the annual 8-a-side tournament
at Chedworth once again.
The team secured their place in
the knockout phase after topping
their group with two wins out of
two - against Chedworth and
Stowell Park.
They went on to win their semifinal against Langford by 30 runs,
with Angus Hayward and John
McPhilimey both scoring 25 not
out.
In the final they took on hosts,
Chedworth. An excellent bowling
display, in which Joe Boote took
two wickets, restricted Chedworth
to just 50 runs. This target was
achieved with two overs to spare
with Tim Williams-Ellis scoring 25
runs.
Men’s Team Update
Unfortunately our 1st XI have had a very disappointing run of results and have been unable to manage a win this month. They
lost to Cranham, Shurdington and Frocester and their match against Stone was abandoned because of the weather. Despite
slipping down to 9th position in the league and into the relegation zone, the players are working hard to get back to winning
ways and to earn the team vital batting and bowling bonus points in the league. Angus Hayward batted well to score 77
(Cranham home) and 61 (Frocester away), and Tim Williams-Ellis finished on 79 (Cranham home). Skipper, Stephen Stroud,
showed good bowling form against Cranham: 9-2-33-3.
Our 2nd XI have only played two games this month. They achieved an impressive victory to beat league leaders Central Hall by 4
wickets. Theo Hayward was the top batter with 78*, including 12 fours. However, in their local derby against Great Rissington
there were several regular players missing and our team were unable to match the batting strength of their opponents and
failed to reach the target of 238 that had been set. Mark Saunders returned from injury to bowl and took some crucial wickets:
4-2-4-3. With a shortage of players available to bowl, this season’s wicket keeper Diddle Keen and last season’s wicket keeper
Andrew Herbert took a turn to bowl and took two wickets each. Ladies’ squad member Michelle Kilmister was also called up to
play in the team so that they could field a full side.
Our T20 XI’s season has now ended as the team were knocked out of the plate semi-final by Poulton, losing by 25 runs.
