For stockist details, call 020 7823 1051 or visit jimmychoo.com Winter The Autumn/Winter collection from Jigsaw is one of the highlights of the high street this season, with a mixture of wardrobe classics and on-trend pieces such as leather dresses and chunky knits. We love this very modern take on the country casual look: a Lucinda trilby (£42) paired with Oak tweed coat (£298), lace-up boots (£165) and long, cable wristwarmers (£29) worn here as leg-warmers. Jigsaw, Bath: 01225 461613 / BA1 1BA; Jigsaw, Cheltenham: 01242 525849 / GL50 1LY; jigsaw-online.com COATS There are so many different styles of coats this season, it is hard to know where to begin. Here, we point you in several of the right directions... Editor’s Choice From high street to high fashion – our editorial selections span country style and evening glamour... That is why our corper edited faux fur selection might fit the bill. Other trends include military, camel and shearling which you will have seen in various incarnations on the catwalks, in the boutiques and on the high street. There are also some wonderful, unique looks from Cotswold designers for evenings as well as hard-wearing and rugged country coats for outdoor types. While coats from designers such as Burberry, Prada and Ralph Lauren might exceed your seasonal budget, there are similarly stylish versions of these from more affordable labels such as Hobbs, Betty Jackson, Biba and Monsoon. Marks & Spencer and Next also have very on-trend coat collections this winter, so the high street should be right up there in 4 your search... These Rope details boots (£238) are by Kat Maconie, an up-andcoming British designer who has a genius for making towering heels look elegant. Another of her styles to look out for is the Sylvia sheepskin clog-boot, which is ideal for wearing with jeans. Kat Maconie shoes are available from selected Whistles stores, or online from Javari.co.uk. Schoffel countrywear – for both men and women – is beautifully tailored in understated styles. A new addition this year are these men’s check shirts which come in three colours: olive, red and blue. For sporty types, Schoffel also has an excellent ski range. Local stockists include Landmark in Broadway. Schoffel: 01572 770900 / schoffel.co.uk Leopard print is everywhere this season. However, the question for all but the youngest and bravest is how to wear it without looking scary. For a discrete nod to fashion, this clutch from Coccinelle gets the balance just right. The winning feature of a camel coat is that there is a shade to suit practically everyone, with tones varying from cream through to toffee. Our choices in this category include a stylish camel cape (shown left) from House of Fraser (houseoffraser.co.uk), a classic, red-belted three-quarter length coat from Debenhams (debenhams.co.uk), as well as Marks & Spencer's collarless fitted coat and its pebble-buttoned sandy-camel belted design (marksandspencer.com). CAPES Capes, often considered a stylish alternative to the chunky, outwear cardigan, have successfully made the transition from catwalk to high street. They range from feather or sequin bolero-styles to cosy woollen capes. Their layering effect can work wonders on proportions – look for short, fitted pieces. Our top picks include Warehouse's black cape with grey trim (shown right, warehouse.co.uk), Vivienne Westwood's luxurious tartan drape (harveynichols.com), a quirky feathered number from Accessorize (monsoon.co.uk) and a frill-ruffled vintage cape from Beyond Retro (beyondretro.com). There are some beautiful coats on the high street with traditional country looks. Standard countrywear may also be subtly practical, waterproof and reversible. Here, left to right, we have chosen this ultra-feminine Francis Pendeville coat available locally from Blue Womens Clothing (bluewomensclothing. com), a cool-toned Glamis frock coat from Hobbs (hobbs.co.uk), the Hampton Tweed from Gilinix (gilinix.co.uk) and Barbour’s Madge Tartan Coat available from Mangan and Webb in Stow-on-the-Wold (manganandwebb.com). Evening Evening coats need to be versatile enough to work with dresses or slacks, high heels or flats, as well as jewellery and clutch bags. The main tenet of the evening style is understated glamour, so velvets, brocades and damask patterns are ideal. Our selections (from right to left) are: Next's damask patterned coat (next.co.uk), this stunning, rich green velvet coat from Cotswoldsbased Frangipani (frangipanicollection.com), a ruffle cape from Biba at House of Fraser (houseoffraser.co.uk) and Nicole Farhi's Plume coat from Foundation in Stow and Cheltenham (shopfoundation.com). Each year there is a new style, length or colour to emerge on the catwalks and this year it’s all about returning to the 1960s Marilyn Monroe look with decadent, three-quarter length furs in fawn, grey and dark brown. Our favourites include two cosy designs from Next, Biba’s uber-cool 1960s Limited Edition fur available from House of Fraser (houseoffraser.co.uk) and Per Una’s Collins faux fur at Marks & Spencer (marksandspencer.com). Military The military look has grown and grown over the course of this year. Items now come in all different shades (no longer just army greens, navies and blacks) and with some fabulously quirky twists on standard styles. If you want to get military, there is this doublebreasted, fitted coat (shown right) from D EFECT at Qetty Bang Bang in Tetbury (qettybangbang.co.uk). From left to far left, Red Herring's military-style coat with faux fur, Jane Norman's white hooded coat (both available from Debenhams) and this classic grey, belted coat available by mail order from Esprit (esprit.co.uk) also caught our eye. This season’s shearling coats are chic aviator-style jackets in rich brown or taupe. For high-end shearling, it is hard to upstage Burberry's portfolio of outerwear (available from net-a-porter.com) or Acne's shearling biker jacket (available from Boutique 3 in Cheltenham). Where the designers have gone, the high street has followed: two of our favourites are Hobbs' chocolate brown shearling with detachable waist (hobbs.co.uk) and Own the Runway's belted black shearling (owntherunway.com). Feva, on Regent Street, has found its unique place in the market by providing a holistic fashion service to women from across the Cotswolds... Feva purposely stocks collections with substantial breadth but not volume. The shelves are full of a comparatively small selection of handpicked designer clothes, jewellery, evening wear and shoes, which – because of this – come with a guarantee that you will not see the same item on lots of other people. Feva also places a strong emphasis on the importance of change in the fashion industry by making a concerted effort to stay one step ahead of current fashion trends, as well as an urgency to expand and be able to offer several different fashion and beauty services. With so much to choose from, 140 the boutique is like a department store, providing an entire ‘shopping experience’, rather than just a drop-in shop for quirky one-offs. “It all started when I felt there was something missing in Cheltenham and I wanted to bridge the gap between top-end designer labels and ubiquitous high street brands,” says Jan Clift, the founder and owner of Feva. “We first opened in 2002, and since then we’ve been aiming to retain that independent boutique feeling whilst at the same time offering women a very large selection of brands, styles and items.” For daywear, Feva stocks European designer NovembeR 10 Cotswold preview gems like Italian label Legatte with its bold, cultured casual wear and Leo Guy’s feminine French dresses and skirts. For evenings, there are fitted bustiers and flattering corsets in different colours from Catwalk Collections and Faviana’s glamorous, Hollywood-style floor length gowns. The accessories shelves are filled with chunky silver and crystal jewellery from Bibi and Nour’s highimpact costume jewellery among others. “When I source the items we sell,” says Jan, “I have individual customers in mind. If I see something nice, I often think, “Mrs Jones would definitely like that”, so I buy it and make sure she sees it when she’s next in the boutique. Most of the time I’m right.” “I get a lot of satisfaction out of helping women rediscover their style, especially after having children,” says Jan. “It’s great to be able to help them look and feel fabulous again.” Feva’s close relationship with its customers is its strength, and is enlightened by the annual calendar of colourful events which showcase new services, fashion shows, anniversaries and designer label launches. On 3 November Feva is celebrating the opening of its new showroom and a personal shopping service by gathering local fashion designers and beauty experts to share their style secrets for flawless skin and clothes to flatter your shape. The event includes a range of talks, competitions and personal consultations. If you would like to attend, please contact Jan Clift at Feva on the number below. This season it’s all about Hakaan… Very rarely are designers plucked out of obscurity suddenly to find themselves at the epicentre of London’s fashion elite. But Hakaan Yildirim, a 37 year old designer from Turkey, has experienced just this over the last six months, with the label bearing his own name: Hakaan. Now famous for having enticed Carine Roitfield, editor of French Vogue, across the Channel to see his show in February, Hakaan was previously just another person on the long list of international designers who had come to make their debut at London Fashion Week. His show had not even been advertised in the programme by the day it was due to take place, but the steady flow of hype and secrecy that surrounded it saw Hakaan opening to a packed audience. His look mainly consists of strong, super-sexy sculptures of short dresses and skirts in black, white, camel and beige. His fabric tastes are extravagant and wild, incorporating leather, ostrich feathers and rubber ribbing in some pieces, while still managing 142 Welcome designer profile… Hakaan to retain a sophisticated look. When you first see the collections they might appear to be only for the very young or the brave due to their thigh-skimming hems and figurehugging fabrics. But on closer inspection, the styles have an architectural structure within their contours, which is more universally appealing. Hakaan’s place in next year’s fashion diary has been confirmed by the label winning the 2010 ANDAM Award, which champions designers from around the world. Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Lara Stone are already avid fans as are an increasing band of fashion magazine editors who are listing the label in their season’s highlights. Hakaan has been exclusively snapped up by Harvey Nichols and pieces are now available with prices ranging from £660 to £2,500. Simple, chic and very now, Hakaan is definitely one to watch. Available from Space NK in Bath, Cheltenham, Leamington Spa and Stratford-uponAvon: spacenk.com on During the winter, the best ingredients for helping your skin to retain its moisture reserves are plant oils which mimic sebum, the skin’s natural moisture barrier. Spacenk.com 144 NovembeR 10 Cotswold preview Trend Professional make-up artists give their top tips – and shortcuts – for some of season’s most glamorous looks... It is often reported that British women refuse to experiment with different make-up looks. Research is cited stating that the average woman fixes on one or two make-up trends throughout her life and sticks with them. A sample of one is unscientific, of course, but if this sounds like you then there is some truth to the research. Given most women’s everyday schedules, it shouldn’t come as a surprise: most jobs require moderate, natural-looking make- Cotswold preview NovembeR 10 up, and during motherhood it can be quite an achievement even to put a quick coat of mascara on in the morning. But as summertime complexions fade, clever make-up is one way of avoiding winter pallor. What better time of year to experiment with new make-up techniques? Here, Kate Jarratt has canvassed several of the Cotswolds’ best make-up artists to find out the latest, wearable winter trends: 4 145 health & beauty feature… ON trend curve of your lips. My favourite liner is Estée Lauder’s Double Wear Stay-in-Place lip pencil in Red (£15). Matte reds can have the effect of thinning the lips. If you have thin lips, try Chanel’s new lip gloss Rouge Allure Extrait de Gloss (£22.50) in 60 Excess or 61 Fatale, the shine automatically plumps the lips and gives a fuller look. If you go for strong lip colour, tone down the rest of your make-up and let the lips do the talking. Too many trends going on at once can ruin the look. Make sure that your eyebrows are tidy – pencil in the colour if necessary to frame the eyes – and use lots of black mascara to finish. Very Red Lips With Christmas approaching it is the time of year when very red lipstick becomes a party essential. It’s easy to assume that this is a high maintenance look with lots of smudge risks, but you can pull it off by following certain rules. Netia Hibbert, a make-up artist based in Tetbury offers her top tips: Netia adds that, “I advise my clients to ease themselves into ‘brave lips'. If you want to get used to this look gradually, Clinique has a range of Buttershine lipsticks (£14.50) which are a cross between a lipstick and a lipgloss which means you can smudge a tiny bit on to stain the lip and build it up as you get braver. Once you are confident and ready to be bold, try Clinique’s High Impact Lip Colour in Red-y to wear (£14.50) or Estée Lauder’s Double Wear Lipstick in Stay Scarlet (£17).” Smoky-Purple Eyes The eighties have come and gone taking purple eye shadow with them, but there is no harm in having a hint of smoky-purple colour to raise the intensity and make your eyes more glamorous. One colour does not fit all: you need to find the perfect colour for your skin tone. Fair skins suit bluer, cherry reds; olive skins tomato reds and darker skins anything with a gold undertone. 146 Red lipsticks are notorious for ‘bleeding‘. Apply lip liner before the lipstick and follow the natural Because smoky eyes are dark, make sure you have no other dark areas on your face by mixing your natural colour foundation with a highlighter and apply using a brush or sponge, starting in the centre of the face and moving outwards. The ‘countryside chic‘ look can be as natural or as strong as you like, but the first rule is to only use matte powders and foundations. For the basis of this look, MAC produce a fantastic matte powder called MAC Mineralise Skinfinish (£17.47) Using a cream purple eyeliner, draw a thick line above the lashes with a flat angle brush and top with the same colour eye shadow and blend upwards to the outer corner of the eye. Use a dark brown eye shadow over the entire eyelid and beneath the lower eyelash line and blend it out with a powder that is a couple of tones darker than your skin. This creates a natural but striking transition between the eye and the rest of the face. Then use black cream liner but in a thin line sitting on top of the lashes and finish the outer corner of your eyes with black shadow (pictured.) On the bottom lid use black eyeliner inside the eye, and follow with the same colour shadow starting in the middle of the eye to the outer corner. To finish, apply a light coat of mascara top and bottom. Countryside Chic In the country, the tweed, fur and shearling trends from the catwalks will come into their element when the chill of winter really hits. There is a natural make-up look that you can wear with these trends: Donna Banfield, a make-up To draw out the warmth in the eyes use black eye liner on the lower lash line and then apply lots of black mascara to define them against your matt foundation. Apply a peachy blush to the apples of the cheeks and a small slick of lipgloss on the lips to bring the natural look to life. Cool Colours There are some trends that are not so much about looks, but about shades. And there are certain cool colours on the market at the moment which will suit both warm and cold skin tones. Cornelius Kwackernaak is a hair and make-up artist who provides consultations at Bibury Court for weddings and special occasions. Here, he gives his top tips for wearing icy-cool tones. Colours like gold and coral are right on trend, as they were favourites at Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Dior shows this autumn/winter. Winter make-up trends are all about having fun and being unique, so use an eye-liner to create a smoky effect with a hint of purple, which is one of the best colours to make your eyes stand out. NovembeR 10 Cotswold preview artist based near Cheltenham, tells us her rules for this look: Julian Castenada, a make-up artist based at All Your Life in Cheltenham who has worked worldwide, has the following top tips to create this season's partyperfect look: Make sure that your lips are in good condition – if you are making a statement, you need to show them off to their full potential. Jo Malone’s Vitamin E Lip Conditioner (£22) is one of the best ways to prepare the lips for lipstick and gloss. Estée Lauder has brought out a great ‘Christmas Palette‘ (£34) full of gold shades for eyes which 4 suit all skin tones. Cotswold preview NovembeR 10 147 health & beauty feature… ON trend Hairdressing in Stow-on-the-Wold gives us her top tips for a Baroque-looking Blush: The Baroque look this season is made up of rich bronzes, tawny reds and deep orange golds which suit different skin tones for a sumptuous evening look. Fair skin looks great in rose and orange gold, olive in peach and bronze, and dark skin in apricot or tawny red. Don’t forget to put a primer on your skin as a base for your eye shadow so that your make-up will last all day and not get absorbed by any areas of dry skin on your face. To live the look, reflect the cool tones in the clothes you wear, by wearing colours like pewter, taupe, mauve and khaki. Try Dr Hauschka’s natural range of rouge cheek powders for the fiery cheekbone look. Find a large brush, sweep it through the blush and dab off the excess. Smile and apply the blush across the apples of your cheeks. Keep the colour light and blended. It’s always very important to match your lip hue with your blusher. Try dabbing your chosen lip colour in the centre of the lip and then blend out to the edges. If you want a glossy finish, apply lip balm first and then dab the lip colour on to it. If you wet your brush with water before applying gold eye shadow, the colour will be more intense and last for longer. Baroque Blush In Tudor times, it used to be vegetable dyes that were used to redden cheeks. Thankfully, we now have rather more efficient make-up products to create that highbrow, regal look. This winter it’s all about fire-burnt colours on the cheekbone.
