Operation Runway featured fashions by Tommy Bahama, Christopher & Banks,
My Sister’s Closet and Dress Barn.
Orange Regional Medical Center’s Auxiliary held its first Operation
Runway, a fashion show held on Sunday, April 19 at the Inn at
Central Valley.
Among its top models were Scott Batulis, CEO & President, Jessica
Acosta, RN, and James Oxley, VP of Medical Affairs. The event,
attended by more than 200 fashionistas, raised more than $8,000
in funding for the construction of Orange Regional Medical Center’s
new hospital.
orange regional Auxilians recognized
On May 13, 2009, New York State Healthcare Auxilian Day
was celebrated.
As an integral part of our hospital, Orange Regional Medical
Center’s Auxiliary was publicly and privately thanked for
their time and dedication. This dynamic group, made of up of
nearly 70 members, raises funds through various initiatives,
including it’s first fashion show this year, that directly support a
wide range of clinical activities, patient and family comfort and
satisfaction and employee education. The Auxiliary generously
donates their time, overseeing one of the hospital’s gift shops,
a thrift shop and all community vendor sales. They offer support
throughout the year to many hospital functions, including the
yearly Golf Classic. Recently, the Orange Regional Auxiliary
completed payment on a $600,000 pledge to the hospital’s
Building for Excellence Capital Campaign fund. We thank the
Auxiliary for their dedication and generosity.

The Pension Protection Act requires that participants in pension plans receive an annual notice that
describes the funded status of their plan. This notice includes information about the Pension Plan’s
assets and liabilities, how the Plan’s assets are allocated among different categories of investments, and
your rights and protections as a participant. The Department of Labor also requires the annual notice to
include an explanation of what happens if a pension plan terminates. This notice replaces the Summary
Annual Report that you previously received and can be found on the Orange Regional intranet under the
“Human Resources” link and click on the “Annual Funding Notice” option.

The Respiratory Care Department, with tremendous support from the IT
Department and the Laboratory Department, has worked diligently to
implement a new technology called Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) Analyzers
– Siemen 405 Rapidcomm. The technology is now up and running at
both the Horton and Arden Hill Campuses. This upgrade represents a
milestone in Respiratory Care at Orange Regional. The new analyzers
will enable the department to improve procedures and provide more
timely and comprehensive results. For more information, call Frank
Salvatore at 342-7394.

Are you Joint
Commission ready?
Communication is Key to
Enhancing Patient Safety
Ineffective communication is
the most frequently cited root
cause of any issue. Effective
communication that is timely,
accurate, complete, concise
and understood by the
recipient reduces error and
results in a more productive
work environment. Recently,
Sue Hodgson, VP of
Quality at Orange Regional,
sent communication out
specific to our National
Patient Safety Goals
highlighting the importance
of care givers effectively
communicating with each
other and our patients. It is
strongly encouraged that all
Medical Center employees
– not just care givers –
revisit Orange Regional’s
Standards of Behavior in an
effort to be sure we are all
communicating appropriately
for the sake of our patients.
After all, if we are to be
the best regional referral
hospital in the state of New
York, we must continue
communicating effectively.

Physician’s recognition
celebrating Patient
Satisfaction Scores
In April, Orange Regional honored
two departments for reaching great
heights in patient satisfaction. At the
Horton Campus, the Tucker Center
for Cancer Care team exceeded
the Northern Metropolitan Hospital
Association (NORMET) average
for overall rate of care in patient
satisfaction scores every quarter
in 2008. The NORMET average is
derived from the patient satisfaction
scores of community hospitals and
health care organizations in the seven
counties north of New York City.

The Arden Hill Campus Critical
Care Unit also scored above the
NORMET average for overall rate
of care in patient satisfaction every
quarter in 2008. Additionally, the
team beat the NORMET average
in all three dimensions of care
(physical comfort, emotional
support and information/education/
communication) for the fourth
quarter of 2008. The team boasts
the highest scores for overall rate
of care among all nursing units at
Orange Regional! Congratulations
to both teams on exceeding our
patients’ expectations.

At Orange Regional, we ensure
that a comprehensive compliance
program remains in place by
establishing mandatory education
programs, compliance committees and
policies. The Board of Directors and
hospital leadership have designed a
compliance program that is responsive
to Federal and State laws and
initiatives, as well as industry “best
practices.” By continuing to work
together as a team will we maximize
our success in corporate compliance.

Moment of Truth
Maryann Marco loves her job at Orange Regional. Love
of her job breeds patient satisfaction. As a food service
employee at the Horton Campus, she interacts with
patients on a daily basis, delivering additional menu
options off of the hospital’s courtesy cart.
The courtesy is a relatively new concept at Orange
Regional and offers patients a variety of choices when it
comes to snacks in between meals. Maryann believes the
cart is a great way to stay engaged with patients and act
as an additional point of contact.

Knee replacement patients Elaine Igoe and Diane
McClure are visited by Maryann Marco while in the
rehabilitation unit at Orange Regional’s Horton Campus.
Maryann goes above and beyond the call of duty to satisfy the cravings of her patients within their
dietary limits and within the realm of their care. This is not an unusual task for her. It makes her job more
desirable, and in fact, keeps her inspired to make sure patients remain comfortable during their stay. “It’s
more than just food,” she said. “It’s the interaction, knowing that someone is waiting to see you. It’s also
knowing you can brighten someone’s day by asking one simple question: ‘how are you doing?’”
Maryann’s philosophy is to treat patients as if they are her own family members and to remember that
everyday may not be a great day for patients. “You do feel obligated. If this was my family member, I’d
want to know that each had everything they needed and felt comfortable,” Maryann said. “It only takes
one person to care about you and that will give you a glimmer of hope during a tough time.”
Elaine Igoe, a recent knee replacement patient in the rehabilitation unit, said Maryann came to her rescue
during her stay. “Because she was so conversational, she was able to fix a problem I had with my meal.
She assured me there would be no additional problems. Maryann was a great asset.”
But for Maryann, who’s been employed at Orange Regional for more than 10 years, and who was Orange
Regional’s 2005 Employee of the Year, said it’s all part of her job. She attributes her success to everyone
who works within the food service department, who often work behind the scenes to provide essential
services.
“When you give unselfishly, you provide extra care and where would we be without that?” Maryann said.
In Memory
