Orange Regional Medical Center Purchases Potential Site for New
THE MERGER OF ARDEN HILL HOSPITAL & HORTON MEDICAL CENTER www.ormc.org Healthy Signs MAY/JUNE 2003 A Newsletter for Friends & Family of Orange Regional Medical Center Orange Regional Medical Center Purchases Potential Site for New Hospital in the Town of Wallkill A press conference was held at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, May 29, 2003 in the auditorium at ORMC’s Horton Campus where hospital officials unveiled details of a purchased property that could potentially serve as the site of a new hospital. The 53.5 acre site, which consists of several parcels, is being purchased for a total of $2.65 million. The site is located north of East Main Street and directly east of Midway Park Drive. Plans for a new hospital are currently being developed and financial feasibility studies are being updated to reflect recent cutbacks in hospital reimbursement at both the state and federal levels. Details such as the size of the new hospital are still being determined, but initial thoughts are for approximately 375 to 400 beds. It is anticipated that the new hospital will be the largest acute care facility between the Tappan Zee Bridge and Albany. President and CEO Jeffrey Hirsch said, “This purchase is the first critical step toward physically consolidating ORMC’s Goshen and Middletown campuses onto one site. For over a year, we have evaluated several dozen possible new sites and this site in Wallkill is the most suitable. Our next step is to reexamine the financial feasibility of this project, particularly given the continuing erosion of healthcare reimbursement from the state and federal governments. The possibility does exist that a totally new hospital at this location may not be affordable and we’ll have to consolidate on one of the existing campuses. We expect that decision to be made in the near future.” A total of 37 sites were evaluated. Each was subjected to a rigorous analysis of its ability to satisfy several key criteria including: Continued on page 3 Alanna Smith Appointed Board Chair of Orange Regional Medical Center Janet Rogers Retires from ORMC Board At their May meeting, the ORMC Board of Directors said a fond farewell to member, Janet Rogers, who has retired after 22 years of dedicated service. Alanna Smith, Business & Industry Coordinator for Orange-Ulster BOCES, has been appointed Chair of the Board of Directors at ORMC. Ms. Smith replaces previous Chair Woody Levitan who led the 18-member board for the past three years. Ms. Smith has been a member of the Board of Directors since 1993, originally from Alanna Smith the Board of Directors at Arden Hill Hospital, which merged in 2002 with Horton Medical Center to form ORMC. “It’s truly an honor to Chair the Board of Directors at Orange Continued on page 3 We have been privileged with Jan’s exemplary service and dedication to ORMC for over two decades. Over the years, her contributions have been many. She has been a dependable and admirable volunteer, serving on Janet Rogers the Board of Directors since 1981. Her input and vision was instrumental in the development of long-term care and the Arden Hill Life Care project. She was appointed to the joint Continued on page 3 Local Med-Surg Nursing Chapter Reaches Out In Fond Remembrance The Greater New York Chapter of the Academy for Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) recently held a fundraiser to benefit The Family Empowerment Council, Inc. of Middletown. Their donation will be used toward the purchase of a disabled accessible van. Reverend David W. Jenks, who spent almost thirty years ministering at ORMC’s Horton campus as Hospital Chaplain, passed away on May 31, 2003 at the age of 90. Before his retirement in 2001, Reverend Jenks developed and coordinated the Pastoral Care Program. Realizing that a hospital Reverend David W. Jenks stay can be a frightening, anxious and sometimes lonely experience and that spiritual care is also an important part of the healing process, Reverend Jenks expanded the Pastoral Care Program by providing spiritual and religious support for patients, families, friends, and the hospital community. He spent many hours each day helping patients and families deal with suffering, loss and celebration through active listening, presence and, when appropriate, prayer and religious rites. In November of 2002, the hospital honored Reverend Jenks by dedicating the Clergy Office at the Horton campus in his honor. Although his footsteps are no longer heard echoing through our hallways, he is remembered and sorely missed. Continuing Medical Excellence In the not too distant future medical insurance will require a documented Quality Control Program for Medical Imaging reimbursement. The QC program will be reviewed by each medical insurance company for appropriate documentation and accuracy. The American College of Radiology (ACR), requires a Quality Control Program for Accreditation and is considered the “Gold Standard” in QC programs. In fact all other QC programs are measured by the ACR Standards. Always ahead of the curve, Orange Regional Medical Center, Diagnostic Imaging Department began to accomplish this requirement in June of 2002. Choosing to utilize the “Gold Standard” for Quality Control Programs, the entire Department, Continued on page 6 Orange Regional Medical Center (ORMC) is committed to ensuring the privacy and security of patient health information. This free screening, aimed at increasing awareness in the community, is a collaborative effort between ORMC gastroenterologists, the Clinical Research Office, and the Volunteer Services Department. Participating physicians included Dhiren Patel, M.D, John Podeszwa, M.D., Alan Plumer, M.D., and Lance Siegel, M.D. Volunteers Sue Bianchi, R.N., Kathy Franklin, R.N., Jean Towle, R.N., and Adele Trenz, R.N. staffed the clinic. “If men and women over the age of 50 had regular screening tests, Americans would see a substantial reduction in colorectal cancer deaths” said Dr. Dhiren Patel. According to the National Institutes of Health, colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the U.S.; only lung cancer kills more Americans. “Risk factors for colon cancer include age, family history, and personal medical history, including inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s disease or chronic ulcerative colitis,” said Denise Serrano, Clinical Research Coordinator. “Other factors may include diet, smoking, and a sedentary lifestyle. Individuals should talk with their healthcare provider about their personal screening procedure needs.” The screening consisted of a fecal occult blood test and a digital rectal exam. Of the 42 patients screened by the physicians, 8 patients had abnormal results. Thirty-three patients were advised to follow-up with a colonoscopy. If you would like more information about ORMC’s cancer screening programs, please call the Physician Referral and Health Information Hotline at 845-342-7504 or (toll-free) 1-800-4678666. Janet Rogers Retires (from page 1) Arden Hill Hospital/Life Care Center Board in 1992. She also served on the Board of the Greater Hudson Valley Health System - a major county health initiative. She was also a member of the joint Arden Hill Hospital/Horton Medical Center Board when the two hospitals consolidated. Jan has also always been known as a strong advocate for Behavioral Health Services. Over time, she has served as Secretary to the Board, Vice President of the Board and as President of the Board. In addition, she has participated on a number of committees. Her compassion and concern for the community is only matched by her compassion and concern for employees. She knows many employees by name and many are directly aware of her kindness and thoughtfulness. She will be missed by all. Jan has made a lasting contribution to the health of our community, for which she deserves our utmost thanks. Smith Appointed Board Chair (from page 1) Regional and to be associated with the approximately 3,500 outstanding healthcare providers and community members who work or volunteer there,” said Smith. “The hospital is embarking on an exciting course that will revolutionize and upgrade the state of health care as we know it in the Hudson Valley.” Ms. Smith said, “I have always believed that volunteer service is an important part of what makes a great community and a better quality of life for us all. I live here, work here and have a vested interest in having the best healthcare possible for my family and neighbors.” She has more than 20 years of experience administering state and federally funded employment, training and economic development initiatives. Ms. Smith is a member New Hospital (from page 1) Minimum of 50 acres Location between the two existing campuses Availability of power, sewer, natural gas and water Easy access to major roadways (Route 17 and I-84) Other considerations in the site selection process included zoning status, environmental restrictions and affordability. Hirsch continued, “Based on our criteria, the Wallkill site provides a tremendous opportunity that can ultimately move us closer to a new state-of-the-art facility. Finding an appropriate and accessible site is certainly very positive for our community’s health care needs. This is a purchase that will help us advance the quality of healthcare in our area. We intend to continue to investigate new ways to provide the best care possible and offer those services right here in our community.” If plans remain on schedule, ORMC hopes to construct a new hospital within six years. In the meantime, ORMC plans to continue to serve the community at the two main campuses in Goshen and Middletown, as well as at 13 convenient satellite locations. As plans are developed for the new hospital as well as the reuse of Orange Regional’s two existing campuses, additional information will be shared with the community. The Case Management Department, along with the HIM Department, has taken on a new and exciting program. After a long, intense, yet very productive 4-week training period with experts from JA Thomas, the Compliant Documentation Management Program (CDMP) has begun. Above: Woody Levitan hands business over to Alanna Smith at the May Board meeting. of the Orange County Youth Bureau Advisory Board and the Orange County Chamber Education Committee. She was a member of the Goshen Central Board of Education from 1987 to 1992, serving as President and Vice President. She was recognized and received a Silver Medallion Award in 1994 as an Orange County Woman of Achievement from the YWCA and the Sarah Wells Girl Scout Council. Ms. Smith resides in Goshen with her husband Peter Devito. Ms. Smith is stepping into the role of Board Chair at the beginning of a new chapter in the hospital’s history. Orange Regional recently purchased over 50 acres in the Town of Wallkill that could serve as a site for a new hospital (see story on page 1). This program encourages medical documentation that presents a comprehensive clinical picture and reflects the true severity of illness of the patient both in the hospital and in an outpatient setting. The Case Management and HIM staff have been working closely with the physicians and have generated positive feedback. Congratulations to those employees for their hard work and dedication to this new program. 3 The Best of the Best At Orange Regional Medical Center, our employees are our greatest asset. Their dedication, expertise, involvement and commitment enable us to provide the highest quality healthcare and services to our consumers which include our patients, families, visitors, co-workers, volunteers and medical staff. We are proud to pay tribute to our employees and do so throughout the year in a variety of ways. Annually during National Hospital Week, the hospital’s Board of Directors and Administration host an Employee Service Dinner. This is an opportunity to recognize those employees who have completed 5 to 40 years of service to our consumers. It acknowledges those employees exceptional acts of kindness or, who by their actions, have made a positive impact on the quality of our services. At the Arden Hill campus, the STAR program recognizes the extra effort given by our employees to provide the ultimate level of service, acknowledging those who have made a positive impact on the quality of our services. The STAR of the Year is selected from among those who have been recognized by the STAR Program throughout the year. Monthly, an employee at the Horton Campus is selected as “Employee of the Month.” This employee also portrays those important attributes as noted above. One of the twelve monthly recipients is selected to represent all as the Employee of the Year (see article this page). We are proud of all our employees. Those employees, who by their selection as a STAR recipient or Employee of the Month, represent the compassion and caring, the dedication to high standards and the professionalism of all who contribute to the health and welfare of our community. 2002 Star Of The Year: Arden Hill Campus Jeannette Carbone Marsh, Chief Activity Therapist for the Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit at ORMC’s Goshen campus, has been named 2002 Star of the Year. For the past 30 years, the patients of our Behavioral Health Unit, our staff and the members of the Mental Health community have had the opportunity to attend a special Thanksgiving celebration thanks to Jeannette. She is the organizer and driving force behind this event, putting in many “extra” hours of shopping, cooking and baking. Jeannette is assisted by her staff, Patricia Seaton and Gary Mazzarulli. Weeks of preparation and planning make possible this festive occasion, allowing patients and staff to prepare a meal that is truly a holiday feast. This year’s meal (continued on page 7) 4 2002 Employee Of The Year: Horton Campus It comes as no surprise that this year’s Employee of The Year is Mary Ann Marcos, of Nutrition and Food Services. Mary Ann, an ORMC team member since 1998, is best known for her outstanding service to patients in The Tucker Center for Cancer Care, as well as having kindness and compassion toward all patients. She serves each patient, and will not hesitate to go out of her way to ensure that each one is Mary Ann Marcos satisfied. Mary Ann consistently conducts herself in a manner that reflects positively on Orange Regional Medical Center and, through her actions, she demonstrates that patients are the center of all care. She is an invaluable asset to the Medical Center. Cheers For Volunteers Every day, volunteers are on the job at Orange Regional Medical Center, giving unselfishly of their time and special talents. In 2002, we had 278 adult volunteers and 120 junior volunteers donate a combined total of 69,812 hours of service to over 60 different services and departments. The week of April 27th was National Volunteer Week and, as a way of showing our appreciation, a luncheon was held to honor the accomplishments of the over 270 adult volunteers whose dedication helps to ensure that we continue our mission of providing medical excellence close to home, available to our community. Forty-eight volunteers were recognized for the hours they have served. Combined, they were recognized for over 140,000 hours of service. Thirty-four volunteers were recognized for their years of service which, together, totaled 295 years. In addition, the following volunteers received special awards for their dedication and devotion. “Behind The Scenes” – Margie Karnas, Ginny Privitar “Going The Extra Mile” – Joan Benson, Shirley Eckerson “One Person Makes A Difference” – Marie McGuire, Francis Cawley “Help In A Heartbeat” – Robert Sanok, Phil Demetris “Professional In All They Do” – Adele Trenz, Anita Vandemark “They Walk Softly But Make a Large Impact” – Butch Dolan, Carmel Biondi Carmel Biondi The Spirit of Volunteering Awards BETTY BEAULIEU WESLEY WITTICH Betty began volunteering with us in August of 2000 and has contributed over 1,400 hours of service. Betty’s specific volunteer duties include working in the Cancer Registry and Information Desk; but she is always ready, willing and able to pitch in wherever she’s needed. Betty is a take-charge volunteer who barely Betty Beaulieu has to be asked before she jumps in to assist. She is not only diligent, reliable, dependable, and a pleasure to work with, but also does a fantastic job wherever she goes. She is bright, enthusiastic, and conscientious about her work. She is a trusted member of the cancer registry team, who feel that their workload would increase tremendously without her. Betty knows her job and goes right to work, not needing direct supervision from ORMC staff. Betty truly is a valuable asset to the Volunteer Department and to the Medical Center in general. Wes began volunteering at the Arden Hill campus in 1998 and has given over 2,300 hours of service. He is assigned to the transport/ courier department, where he volunteers two eight-hour days each week. Wes willingly covers when other volunteers are unable to come in. Continuing Medical Excellence (from page 2) under the direction of Gene Bernieri, Manager, will become American College of Radiology Accredited. This accreditation, although mandatory for Mammography, is presently voluntary for all other imaging modalities. Prior to the new QC requirement, ORMC followed New York State Department of Health QC guidelines. In the first quarter of 2003 x-ray and CT Departments, at all sites, received an outstanding score in all NYSDOH inspections. The responsibility to fulfill this directive has been given to Lynda Holyk, QA and Regulatory Compliance Supervisor for DI. Lynda is no stranger to this type of endeavor. In her previous position as Mammography Supervisor she developed a Quality Assurance program which earned 100% ACR Accreditations since 1989. Lynda is Quality Management Certified through the ARRT, one of only 1,300 in the world to achieve this Certification. Because of these extraordinary accomplishments, Lynda was a natural choice for this enormous task. SANE & Sexual Assault Awareness Month In recognition of April being Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the Mental Health Association in Orange County, Inc., ORMC, and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office held a legislative breakfast and provided a program overview of the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Program (SANE). The SANE Program provides nurses trained to deal with victims of sexual assault in a sensitive manner and to collect the physical evidence required for criminal prosecution. First implemented in May of 2000, SANE is a joint venture of the Mental Health Association in Orange County, Inc.’s Rape Crisis Services Program, the District Attorney of Orange County, and ORMC. To date there are 6 modalities and 33 imaging sites in the process of ACR Accreditation. Each imaging site location and every imaging unit at that site will be ACR accredited. The process is a long and complex, teeming with requirements, regulations, paperwork and mandatory timelines. Lynda stresses that she does not do this alone. She is in constant contact with the Medical Physicist, Tom LaRocca, department supervisors and works closely with each modality’s designee. She adds this is team work at its finest. According to sources at the ACR, less than 10% of large medical facilities attempt this massive undertaking and less than 1%, nationwide complete the entire process. To date ORMC, DI is two thirds complete. Lynda proudly announces the target date for Full Department ACR Accreditation is late Fall 2003. 6 Above, left to right: Nadia Allen, Executive Director, MHA in Orange County, Inc.; Erin Ptak, RN, Senior SANE Nurse; Catherine Bartlett, the County Attorney, Orange County; Jonnie Wesley-Krueger, ORMC Manager, Training, Education & Development, ORMC Spokesperson; and Allan Drian, Orange County Attorney’s office.
