THE AUSTIN FILM SOCIETY PRESENTS SLACKER 2011 WRITTEN & DIRECTED BY Bob Ray, Spencer Parsons, Rusty Kelley, Berndt Mader, Amy Grappell, Karen Skloss, Duane Graves & Justin Meeks, Paul Gordon, Jonny Stranger, David & Nathan Zellner, Jay Duplass, John Bryant, Sam Wainwright Douglas, Ben Steinbauer, Elisabeth Sikes, Mike Dolan, Geoff Marslett, Bradley Beesley, Bob Byington & Clay Liford, Carlyn Hudson, Miguel Alvarez, Scott R. Meyers, PJ Raval, and Chris Eska. USA, 2011, 105 MINUTES www.austinfilm.org/slacker2011 SCREENING/PUBLICITY CONTACT Bryan Poyser Director of Artist Services, Austin Film Society [email protected] or 512-322-0145 x3204 “SLACKER 2011 came off as a beautiful work of jazz, with each segment representing an instrumental solo. At times dark and tempestuous (MingusParsons) and at others lyrically rhythmic, playful and exaggerated (MonkDoubek) or rapid bursts of color (Parker-Coleman) the film showcased individual voices while still holding its center as a single work of art.” —Matthew Odam, The Austin American-Statesman SYNOPSIS Richard Linklater's SLACKER inspired a generation of American filmmakers by exploring the subculture of Austin, Texas in a loose narrative with a tapestry of quirky characters. Celebrating the 20th anniversary of that iconic movie, 24 of Austin's top filmmakers banded together to update SLACKER with their own perspectives on the city. SLACKER 2011 is a stream-of-consciousness chronicle of a day in Austin, presenting the city-dwellers, dragworms, proto-hipsters and locations that give the city its modern identity. The film showcases a transformed town next to things that never change. SLACKER 2011 is an homage to twenty years of independent filmmaking, presenting the city’s changing face and showcasing some of its most exciting talent. “SLACKER 2011 succeeds—if not, exceeds—in its mission to capture Austin 20 years after Linklaterʼs version; cleverly commenting on how many things have changed, yet so much has stayed the same. We might keep getting older, but Austin continues to stay weird.” —Don Simpson, Smells Like Screen Spirit "A charming, sometime very funny snapshot of contemporary Austin." --Kimberly Jones, The Austin Chronicle ABOUT THE PRODUCTION SLACKER 2011 was embarked on in the Spring of 2011 as a benefit for the Austin Film Society’s Texas Filmmakers’ Production Fund (TFPF), a grant program for Texas filmmakers that has given away over $1.2 million to Texas filmmakers since 1996. Many of the filmmakers who participated in SLACKER 2011 had received TFPF grants for their previous films. Each filmmaking team was given a $500 budget to pull off their scene, which they did with 24 casts and crews throughout May and June of 2011. Fundraising began in April and continued until the premiere of the film at Austin’s Paramount Theater on August 31st. Donors to TFPF could get signed DVD’s of the original film, T-shirts, posters, walk-on roles, special thanks in the credits and producer credits. It was truly a case of the community helping the community, as the production and premiere of SLACKER 2011 helped the Austin Film Society raise nearly $60,000 for the Fund. FILMMAKER BIOS MIGUEL ALVAREZ A recent graduate of the University of Texas, he was the recipient of the Robert Rodriguez/Elizabeth Avellán Award and Warren Skaaren Fellowship. He has also received awards from the Directors’ Guild of America, Panavision’s Emerging Filmmaker program, the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts, the Hamptons International Film Festival, and the Texas Filmmakers Production Fund for his previous films, TADPOLES, VETERANS, KID, and Mnemosyne Rising. A native of San Antonio, Texas, he currently resides in Austin where he teaches at the University of Texas at Austin. Miguel has also edited the Texas Film Hall of Fame Awards honoree clip reels for the last 4 years and Miguel garnered two Texas Filmmakers' Production Fund grants in 2006 for VETERANS and 2008 for MNEMOSYNE RISING. ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE CINEMAS The Alamo Team is made up of the programming office of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, who are a creative partner on this project with Austin Film Society and a long-time Legacy Sponsor of AFS.
