Kay Hansen
“I WILL MISS THE KIDS”
Long time English teacher Kay Hansen lost her
battle with cancer in May. One of the last things
she said was to tell the students she will miss them.
The following is from her funeral program:
Kay Hansen began Eternal
Live on May 2, 2013, Marian
Central teacher for 29 years.
“Live simply so others may simply live.” Kay
Hansen led her life following this saying. Our hopes
are that each and every one of you who has been
touched by her will follow her legacy of love. Our
angel is now guiding, supporting, and loving us
from heaven just as she did on earth. There will be
no race in life that we can’t finish because Kay will
be cheering us on. She would say to her family:
The Lord will ask you: “How much have you
loved?” We intend to reply, “As much as our mom.”
(From Earl, Elizabeth and Michael.)
“Mrs. Hansen would always just light up a room. She was an amazing teacher,
who just always gave!” Erin McConnell Widmayer ’92, Marian Art Teacher
“I am grieving in small part for myself. For losing a woman who had a huge
impact on me, who taught me that short stories and long essays are wonderful
things too often overlooked, and who always, always had a smile. I am
grieving for myself that I’ll never be able to see her in a Marian hallway again,
or ask her advice, or invite her to my wedding one day. She would have been
the best wedding guest. You know she would have. For me and many others,
she was that teacher. The one who stuck with you long after class was over.
The one who did more than teach; she inspired.” Alexe Cooney ’07
“I really liked her in English, and as a pom coach. I always think of her when I
hear The Raven (NEVERMORE!). She will be missed.” Kris Martinez Farrell ’91
“Mrs. Hansen taught me to open up and be confident in analyzing literature
and to be kind to everyone no matter who they were.” Rachel DiPirro ’13,
Co-Valedictorian
Marian Central students out of respect for Kay Hansen wore bandanas to school
the day after her funeral. Over 500 were collected and then hung in a display on
the walls and ceilings of the English department until the end of the school year.
Transitioning
to the 20’S
Strategic
Plan
Early in the 2012-13
school year, the Council of
Administration appointed
an ad hoc committee whose
responsibility it was to develop
a new long-range plan for the
school. The Transitioning to
the 20’s strategic plan report
developed by the committee
was presented to and approved
by the Council at its April
meeting. The plan contained
21 recommendations for
meeting the demands associated
with continually updating
and improving our school
programs and facilities. We
have posted on our website a
brochure which identifies the
recommendations contained in
the plan. You can access the
plan from the front page of
our website at: www.marian.
com. During the 2013-14
school year we will begin
the implementation of those
recommendations. In accord
with the plan, certain of the
recommendations are to be
addressed in the next five years
while others, which would
require more significant funding
sources, are to be addressed over
years six to ten.
The Hurricane Alert is published twice a year by the Development Office. All
information is accurate to the best of our knowledge. All news items should
be addressed to: Marian Central Development Office, 1001 McHenry Avenue,
Woodstock, IL 60098. Information may also be sent via FAX (815) 338-8445 or
emailed to [email protected]. Thank you in advance for your efforts and
support. These issues would not be possible without your generosity.

MARIAN CENTRAL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL LAID THE FOUNDATION...
“It is with deepest gratitude and joy that I celebrate the 50th anniversary of my graduation from Marian Central.
As the school opened its doors in 1959, our class of 1963 was the first to complete four years at the school. We had
great teachers who encouraged us, taught us about faraway places, and made us think about our futures.
I became the first in my family to graduate from high school and college. My desire to become a nurse was fulfilled
and I worked in Chicago as a public health nurse. Thank you, Marian Central, for getting me off to a great start.”
Barbara Shannon Davidson ’63
Class of ’63 Celebrates 50th Reunion
The weekend of June 21-23 saw 48
members of the Class of 63 enjoy their
50th reunion. Special guests included
former faculty members Joe Gubbins,
Mary Brennan (Sr. Maria), Ed and Mary
Osada, Tom Parsley, and Pat Stilling.
The weekend ended with a tour of the
school conducted by Superintendent
Tom Landers.
In appreciation of the positive impact
Marian Central had on their lives, the
Class of ’63 gave a class gift to the school
to commemorate their 50th reunion
and, hopefully, start a tradition with
other classes. The “Class of ’63 Fiftieth
Reunion Fund” has been established
within the school’s endowment fund,
where the fund’s interest earnings will be
used to help the greatest need. Private
and/or anonymous donations can be
made at any time.
