We are excited to celebrate fifty years of excellence at Marian High School with you, who mean so much to our school community. As the Marian Community celebrates our golden anniversary this year, we delighted in the many opportunities to reflect on our school’s story: our humble yet steadfast beginning in 1964, the tremendous blessings the Lord has bestowed upon us along our 50 year journey, and how we have grown as a community in faith and mission. This year our students, faculty, and staff have been steeped in this spirit of reflection. Amid many celebrations and initiatives, it led us in a special way to express our gratitude to the community and to the members of the Marian family that have gone before us through the Knights Give Thanks Campaign in October. For the first time in our school’s history, all students and teachers participated in a day of community service during which we served over 50 local not-for-profit agencies. Building on the success of that day, both in the hearts of our participants and at the agencies we served, we have already selected a date for our day of service in Fall 2015 and will keep it on our annual calendar. Anniversaries also grant us a unique opportunity to look to our future, to set new goals so that we can ensure that the next 50 years are as fruitful as the first. These words from former Marian Principal, Cyril DeVligher, provide a lens through which we can look to our future with refreshed zeal to continue our mission. As the educational arm of the Church, Marian shares in the permanence promised it by Christ as long as it remains true to His teaching. It is Marian’s real and perceived adherence to the teachings of Christ that has both enabled it to survive and to look forward, to continuous growth, and expansion. As we gather tonight, know that I am so very grateful for your tremendous generosity and support of Marian’s mission to provide Catholic education for all students who seek it. Your donations of time, talent, and treasure are not just a crucial part of our annual operating budget, but also help to make a Marian education possible for families in need of financial assistance. The success of the auction would not be possible without the hard work and support of many people. Thank you to Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades for his presence here this evening, for his leadership, and for his commitment to Catholic education. Thank you to all of the past Marian Auction Chairs who have generously agreed to serve as Honorary Auction Chairs: Judy and Jerry Kearns Jan and JohnJenkins Mary Jane and Bill Stanley Mary and Joe Woodka Barb and Mike Flynn Cathy Fitzpatrick Ceci and Randy Hayes Rulan and Jay Asdell Rosemary and Sam Borrelli Katy and George Cressy Barb & Mike Williams Susan and Brian Coulter Vicki and Bob File Carol and Jim Holt Janet and Thomas Turnock Diane and Bill Killilea Kathy Malone Beeler Jan and Jim Williams Dan Fitzpatrick Janet Koucouthakis Liz and Chuck Ware Rachelle and Thad Naquin Anne and John Griffith Diane Coiro Barb and Tom Murphy 6 Nancy and Jim Olson Kathleen and Andy Klawitter Mary Ellen and David Diroll Jeannelle and Brian Brady Ann and Joe Iams Pam and Rich Mullin Janie and Don Reese Tricia and Pat Barry Jackie Hartman Niblock Kitty and Tim Fulnecky Maureen Koscielski Mary and Ken Eme continued next page continued from previous page I especially want to thank this year’s auction Co-Chairs, Bill and Evonne Corbett and David and Beth Whitfield whose dedication and leadership were vital to the success of this evening. I also wish to thank Alicia Redinger, Development Director, Colleen Ravotto ’85, Assistant Director of Development, Joanne Eichhorn, Administrative Assistant, and the dozens of committee chairs and volunteers. Their commitment, creativity and enthusiasm shine through in every detail of this evening. Finally, I am grateful for all of you, the attendees, for your generous contributions at tonight’s auction. Many thanks for your support, and enjoy Anniversary Knight! Sincerely yours in Our Lady, Mark B. Kirzeder Letter from Judy & Jerry Kearns The auction began its’ thirty-five year history in our diocese at Bishop Dwenger High School in Ft. Wayne. The very positive results of that first auction prompted Bishop McManus to ask all diocesan high schools to consider doing the same thing. It was determined, at that time, a joint auction with St. Joe High School was in the best interest of both schools. Msgr. Bill Schooler, then Chaplain at Marian, recruited us to co-chair the Marian portion. Diane Quinn was St. Joe chair. Dozens of volunteer parents and faculty labored for over a year. It was “tough sledding” to begin. There was a lot of interest and much effort with few results until Mr. and Mrs. Arthur J. Decio donated a brand new converted van. The floodgates then opened including the donation of a Paso Fino show horse. The “black-tie” optional first auction was held at Marian in March 1982. The gym was converted into an Irish Village complete with a thatch roofed hut. That auction raised about $120,000 which was divided evenly between Marian and St. Joe. Since then, auctions have provided over $ 4 million for Marian High School. Our three children graduated Marian (Meg-1985; Sean-1989 and Ann-1993) and Emma, our oldest grandchild, is now enrolled as a freshman. The influence of a Catholic curriculum, dedicated teachers and the educational purpose of a wonderful student body continues to benefit and strengthen our family. It is our pleasure to join in this auction celebration.
