As always, the gala drew an overflow crowd of the entertainment world’s hottest celebrities, business moguls, and socialites. The red carpet was packed with press and onlookers vying for a glimpse of supermodel, Naomi Campbell, reality star Kim Kardashian and her “BFF” Lala Anthony, Eve, and other celebs. The unseasonable fall weather provided a beautiful setting for a night out at downtown hotspot Cipriani Wall Street, where guests included Natalie Cole, Clive Davis, Tommy & Dee Hilfiger, Solange Knowles, Kyle MacLachlan, Former New York Governor David Patterson, Nancy Rogers, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, and Russell Simmons to name only a few. Returning to host for a second year, Samantha Harris led the evening with her usual ebullience. Honorees included Vladislav Doronin, Naomi Campbell, Dr. Khalid Bin Jabor Al-Thani and Romero Britto and Lorraine Schwartz once again served as the evening’s Gala Sponsor. The show was jam packed with exciting musical performances by the winner of “The Voice” Javier Colon, CHIC featuring Nile Rodgers and NYC hipster DJ Cassidy spinning dance tunes. Kim Kardashian silenced the assemblage with a moving tribute to her father who died of cancer, immediately followed by a show stopping performance by Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation 14 Penn Plaza Suite 1704 New York, NY 10122-1790 t. 646.861.2033 f. 646.781.9355 gabriellesangels.org gabriellesangels.co.uk Patti LaBelle’s rendition of “Over the Rainbow” while photos of Gabrielle Rich beamed in tribute from the stage screens. International art maven Simon de Pury energized the evening’s Live Auction by jumping into the crowd to get the final bids with additional proceeds raised through the online auction and raffle. A major gift from the Charles Evans Foundation which will support additional research initiatives was announced by the Chairman of the Foundation’s Medical Advisory Board, Memorial Sloan-Kettering’s Dr. Stephen D. Nimer. (Related article on page 3.) A delicious dinner of rack of lamb au jus was served followed by Cipriani’s signature vanilla crème meringue cake. Wine flowed, guests crowded the dance floor, and were sent off into the night with an amazing Romero Britto gift bag chocked full of goodies. Of the $3.5 million raised, Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation will disburse an incredible $3 million directly to the nation’s leading physician-scientists whose hope is to end cancer in our lifetime. Greenberg Traurig, LLP Angel Ambassador Ethan Zohn attended the Angel Ball with his beautiful girlfriend, Jenna Morasca on his arm, but the two were keeping some recent news under wraps. The 37-year-old announced that his cancer was back—this time, in his lungs. After previously conquering non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Ethan began treatment the day after he spoke at the Foundation’s October gala. According to his doctors, Ethan responded well to the new “smart” chemotherapy regimen. Next up is another stem-cell transplant with one of Ethan’s brothers serving as his match. “Cancer isn’t going to slow me down,” Ethan told People Magazine. “I want people to know that you can still live a fulfilled life and move forward.” True to his word, Ethan completed his second New York City Marathon in 4:20 last November, ran the Walt Disney World Half Marathon in January, and continues to champion for causes like Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation, Cycle for Survival, as well as his own organization, Grassroot Soccer. Late last year, Dr. Carl June and his lab made international front page news when they went public with their incredible discovery in the treatment of leukemia. As published in The New England Journal of Medicine, June and his team at the University of Pennsylvania found a way to turn the patient’s own blood cells into attackers that kill their cancer cells. This bold, experimental Phase 1 study led to remission, both partial and complete, in its participants and offers future promise of curing cancers other than leukemia, as well. Dr. June, the Director of Translational Research at the Abramson Cancer Center and the lead researcher on this project was quoted in the New York Times on the study’s efficacy, “It worked great; we were surprised it worked as well as it did.” He went on to call their promising techniques “a harvest of the information from the molecular biology revolution over the past two decades.” Thanks to a very generous major gift, our second in 2011, Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation announces the creation of a new collaborative research project. This new grant mechanism, made public at our November symposium, is open exclusively to senior investigators previously funded by the Foundation, and presents these proven and accomplished physician-scientists with the opportunity to explore new ideas together in a collaborative setting. Applicants are encouraged to partner with other former grantees on a project which, in keeping with the mission of the Foundation, focuses on clinically relevant research in the hematologic malignancies or on some supportive aspect of the care of patients with these diseases. With this grant, Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation hopes to further accelerate the extraordinary progress being made in cancer research today. The recipients of this exciting new award will be announced this summer. “Charlie’s Angels” Donate Major Gift Longtime Foundation champion, Bonnie Pfeifer Evans along with her sister-in-law Alice Shure chose to lend their support where it was needed most. As trustees of The Charles Evans Foundation, Bonnie and Alice made an incredible donation to Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation so that two additional outstanding hematologic cancer research projects could get the green light, projects that would not otherwise have been funded. The two grantees benefiting from this generous gift are Benjamin L. Ebert, M.D., Ph.D. of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Dorothy Sipkins, M.D., Ph.D. of The University of Chicago. The Charles Evans Foundation honors the memory of Bonnie’s late husband and Alice’s brother, fashion executive and movie producer, Charles Evans. The Foundation supports a wide range of causes, from fire safety and public health initiatives to projects that assist the disadvantaged. Hailing Bonnie and Alice at the Angel Ball as “Charlie’s Angels,” Medical Advisory Board Chairman Stephen D. Nimer, M.D. remarked, “No one knows which idea in cancer research will lead to the big breakthrough, but through the generosity of The Charles Evans Foundation we will be able to expand the number of dedicated and creative individuals searching for the solution.” 3 Foundation Visits Philly The Loeb Central Park Boathouse once again served as the backdrop for the Second Annual Medical Symposium & Luncheon on Friday, November 4th. Grantees past and present flew in from around the country to discuss the latest discoveries in hematologic malignancies. Medical Advisory Board Chair, Dr. Stephen D. Nimer started the morning off by announcing the creation of a new collaborative grant for past grantees. Co-Founder and President Denise Rich received a standing ovation at the top of the afternoon session for her years of dedication to funding research. The symposium, generously sponsored by Millennium: The Takeda Oncology Company, featured a variety of talks on the exciting research being conducted by these brilliant physician-scientists. This annual event provides a much-needed forum for both doctors and donors to understand more fully the focus of the Foundation’s mission. Plans for the 2012 event are now underway. In February, we hopped the Amtrak to the City of Brotherly Love to visit grantee Jennifer Rhodes who took time out of her day to give us a full tour of Fox Chase Cancer Center’s Zebrafish Facility. The high-tech aquatic system has state-of-the-art equipment and climate-controlled rooms which house up to 15,000 zebrafish of varying ages and sizes. The Director of the facility, Dr. Rhodes’ research uses zebrafish genetics “to inform how gene mutation or abnormal activation can affect myeloid cell development and contribute to acute myelogenous leukemia.” 1 2 3 Photo: Christa Justus Second Annual Symposium a Hit 4 To take your own virtual tour of the zebrafish facility, visit: http://labs.fccc.edu/zebrafish/fishfacility.html Dr. Jennifer Rhodes 5 7 6 1) Dana-Farber’s Dr. David Frank explains his clinical trial 2) Drs. Several hundred guests packed the 58th Street club last July for drinks, dancing, and more. LAVO owner, Marc Packer generously donated his space and over $3,000 was raised for Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation’s research initiatives. The evening featured an open bar sponsored by Bocaj Vodka and Azuňia Tequila. Hosted by Emmy award winner Louie Torrellas and Founding Board Member Michèle Rella, the program included performances by comedian John Moses and magician Elliot Zimet. DJs Mysto & Pizzi kept the crowd on the dance floor and raffle prizes included a Tommy Hilfiger $250 gift certificate and dinner for two at LAVO. Guests left with gift bags full of goodies from Peacekeeper, Yes! Sailing Heals Sailing Heals, a new Boston-based non-profit is helping patients connect with the calming effects of the water. Created by longtime Foundation supporter Michele Gallagher, their mission is to give cancer patients and their caretakers a healing day on a beautiful sailing vessel to see them through the challenge of ongoing treatments, or to celebrate a healthy prognosis afterward. Sailing Heals provides two-hour sails complete with lunch on-board and a little gift bag, to boot. Featured in the Wall Street Journal in 2011, this charity hopes to expand to other coastal cities in the near future. If you know someone who might benefit from a sail or have a vessel they might care to donate, please contact Executive Director Trisha Boisvert at (978) 886-2561 or visit www.sailingheals.org for more information!
