Welcome to the
Drexel Community Fair
2015 Letter from the President’s Desk…
HANG ON…it’s almost time for the 2015 Drexel Community Fair! This year has been one of the most challenging since I have had the privilege to serve on the fair board! The fair organization has undergone many transitions throughout this year, including becoming incorporated, following brand new state mandates, and facing some general growing pains. I am learning to HANG ON! I will always HANG ON to the love I feel for the Drexel Community Fair and all that it represents. I enjoy living in the Drexel community, very close to where I lived as a child. The fall fair was always an integral part of those formative years. I remember my father serving on the fair board when I was young, and the anticipation my family always felt as we awaited the opening of each fair. I still feel that excitement when the fair rolls into town! I will always HANG ON to the working relationship the fair has with the Town of Drexel organization. Although we had to leave the comfort of being an entity under the town this year, we have since become more independent and are subsequently successfully incorporated at this time; however, we still look forward to working with the Town of Drexel in a friendly and cordial manner. I will always HANG ON to the wonderful relationships that are built while working on the fair. My friends and partners on the fair board, and those who are associate members, put in many hours of volunteer labor each year and every person brings unique ideas and gifts to the fair. I am so appreciative of all that each one has done, and continues to do, for our fair and our community! I will always HANG ON to the fact that building, renovating and changing the physical attributes of the fairgrounds means that we are growing! The work is difficult and time consuming, and sometimes we are not able to do all of the things that we want to do, but each year there are visible and invisible improvements that have been planned and executed by the fair board in order to improve your experience while you are here. I will always HANG ON to the gratitude that I feel for the people who make this fair possible! Those who volunteer, pay for advertising, set up booths, sell tickets, operate food booths, provide security, empty trash, clean bathrooms, mow grass and plant flowers. All who work tirelessly in every aspect of the fair operation, before, during and after, I am indebted to each of you! And most of all, I will always HANG ON to those of you for whom we do all of this! The dear friends, the people of the community, the families, the young and old, the new acquaintances, the visitors from near and far; I am so humbled that you continue to come to our small community to be entertained each year! Thank you for the excitement you share with us as we begin the 2015 Drexel Community Fair! So HANG ON…it’s almost time for the 2015 Drexel Community Fair! See you there! 2015 Drexel Community Fair Dedication…
Billy and Sue Clark
Smokey Mountain Amusements
We are proud to announce that the 2015 Drexel Community Fair is dedicated to our longtime friends, Billy and Sue Clark. Billy and Sue owned and operated Smokey Mountain Amusements, which has had a long association with our fair. Earlier this year, they retired from the carnival business to enjoy travel, family and the joy of life in the mountains of North Carolina. Billy Clark started in the business at the tender age of 15, when the carnival came to his hometown. He asked his father if he could travel with them when they left town, and although his dad wanted him to finish school, he told him to go ahead if that was what he wanted. Billy’s first job with the carnival was setting up milk bottles for a game. He earned $3.00 per night, Monday thru Thursday, and a whopping $5.00 per night on Friday and Saturday! In 1961, Billy met and married Sue (they will celebrate their 54th anniversary this September!). Sue worked alongside Billy, buying their first carnival game two years after they were married. Then in 1972, Billy and Sue purchased their first carnival ride! They continued to work together in the business, buying additional rides as they were able. With 7 or 8 rides in their possession, Billy and Sue were asked to join Jon Stines, and traveled with Stine’s Amusements from 1987 through 1999. In 1999 Billy and Sue bought the show and Smokey Mountain Amusements was born! Billy and Sue worked together tirelessly; Billy running the day to day operation, while Sue became the office manager. They always worked in partnership. Billy was often in the foreground, making decisions about the carnival, working with the personnel, and meeting the public, while Sue was the strong woman behind the scenes. She managed the books, paid the help, and held things together while cooking delicious meals for fair boards and other friends who stopped by to visit. They have also had several family members join their efforts over the years. Earlier this year, Billy and Sue Clark sold their operation in order to experience a well‐deserved retirement. It is our good fortune that they sold it to Brain “Beaver” Bitner and Katie Wilson, who have been part of Smokey Mountain Amusements for many years. They are well‐equipped to own and operate their new carnival business, B & K Carnival Company. We welcome them this year as special friends of our fair! Billy and Sue Clark have enjoyed success in the carnival business. They are highly regarded by those that they have worked with and served over the years and their dedication and hard work has been recognized in many ways. Billy Clark was the recipient of the Holmes McBride Associate Award, voted on by his peers in the North Carolina Association of Agricultural Fair Associates in 2005. This year, we want to express our appreciation for the association we have had with them over the years by dedicating the 2015 Drexel Community Fair to Billy and Sue Clark. We thank them for the impact they have made in the carnival business and most especially, to the Drexel Community Fair! We wish them the very best years ahead as they enjoy their retirement! 3

Being a volunteer
fire fighter offers one
reward few other jobs
can match.
Drexel Volunteer
Fire Department
Apply at the Drexel Town Hall or
call 437-7421 for more information.
Few jobs offer you the opportunity to save a
life. But as a volunteer firefighter, you could
be called upon to do it at a moment’s notice.
That’s why we need people with a strong
desire to help others. And people with
courage and dedication to the job they do.
Because this job is so important, we make
sure all of our volunteer fire fighters are
expertly trained and properly equipped.
So if you want to do something important
for your community and are willing to take
on a challenging job, come down to the fire
station and talk to us.
And for your efforts, you may receive the
best reward any job can give.
